SmartyPig is giving one lucky Wise Bread reader a $100 gift card for starting a savings account with them. To enter the contest, simply leave a comment in our SmartyPig thread in the forum. Drawing will close on Sunday 3/30 at 11:59pm PDT.

(By the way, our sister blog Parenting Squad is running an identical contest. If you want an extra chance to win, stop by Parenting Squad and enter Parenting Squad's version of the contest.)

What is SmartyPig

SmartyPig is a new online savings account with a social networking twist.

  • When you open a savings account with SmartyPig, your money is deposited at West Bank, an FDIC insured bank with $1.3 billion in assets, where it will earn *4.30% (APY) interest.
  • You can set up "savings goals" for various projects (e.g. a trip to New York or a new Wii), and activate automatic monthly ACH transfers until the goal is met.
  • Here's the twist: You can make your account public and invite friends and family to help you achieve your goal.
  • SmartyPig also offers incentive boosts from top retailers who sell exactly what you’re saving for.

Here's a video intro:

To be honest, I haven't tried out this service myself. But it does sound like a very neat concept.

If you would like more info, you can check out this review from Netbanker, visit SmartyPig's FAQ or call their customer service at 1-888-567-6278.

*Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective as of 3/16/2008. Rates may change at any time without prior notice.
