In her own words:
Iâm New York mama Jenn from Frugal Upstate. Since 2006, Iâve been writing about simple ways to save money doing simple things youâve never even considered. One hint: itâs not all about clipping coupons and buying on sale!
My motto is use what youâve got, get creative and save. I started by stretching what I had for longer, reusing stuff and making do without all the little needless extras. Along the way, I figured out that frugality is funâlike the way you feel when you find a designer dress at a yard sale for $5.
Frugality isnât scary, itâs a gradual process that Iâm still learning myself. I try different frugal skills, some of which stick, and some that donât. I have fabulous successes and ridiculous failures. I possess no special skills except tenacity and the belief that I can figure it out. And my favorite part is sharing and learning from my readers.
My kids inspired me to take up the frugal cause. I was a career Army officer working with guns and tanks, about a world away from my blissfully domestic life today. After the birth of my first child, I decided to stay home full time. A typical New Yorker, I wanted it all: a good life, happy kiddos and a fat wallet on one less paycheck. I was determined to prove to the world that we donât need more money to keep up our quality of life.
Iâm also a suburban subversive, plotting to reinvent the way we stay-at-home-moms think about keeping up with the Joneses. Hereâs an example: last year I instituted a $10 gift limit at my daughterâs birthday party. No one complained, and gift limits started popping up on Christmas parties and friendsâ invites. Quietly, we frugalites will take over the world!
Remember, every frugal tip isnât for everyone. Try one new frugal skill and see if it works. Even just a few can and will make a difference in your lifestyle (and your bank account).

Welcome! I can't wait to hear more :)
Jenn writes a great blog with important tips on how to stretch a buck during dark times.....
Thanks Kate & Frank. I hope that you both (along with everyone else) head on over to the forums and give me some great questions to answer.
Looking forward to "talking" with you both :)
Wow, when I read "upstate" I thought, "as in upstate NY"? It really turned out to be NY! I'll definitely be checking this blog out. I'm sure I'll be picking up tips. Will check out the forums after I read a bit about the blog.
Yes, Upstate NY! When I named the blog I wanted to differentiate from the city because NYC is what EVERYONE thinks of if you say you are from NY, and, well, living in the country where I do is totally different!
Looking forward to hearing from you, and putting your blog in my reader. If you tweet, look for me as frugalupstate.
I can't wait to read this. Imagine an accountant that likes to save a buck. Makes your head spin I know. Welcome and I am anxiously awaiting!
Dave-well of COURSE an acct wants to save money. AFter all, isn't that what folks hire you to do, keep their finances in order and save them as much money as possible on taxes etc? Makes sense to me.
Looking forward to getting questions from you over at the forums.
