However, that's not to say you can't have a good time on the way to your next destination. On most international itineraries, you can stop in a city for up to 24 hours without it counting as a destination. That means that you typically don't have to pay more, in dollars or miles, to stay somewhere overnight. (See also: How to Add an Extra Destination to Your Next Trip for Free)

But where should you stay? The ideal layover city has several key qualities. First, it has to be an interesting city that's worth visiting. Also, you'll want to have popular attractions located relatively close to the airport. Furthermore, it always helps when the airport is accessible with public transportation. Here are seven fun cities to spend up to 24 hours in during a layover. (See also: 10 Flight Booking Hacks to Save You Hundreds)

1. Seattle, Washington

This northwestern city is now a hub for Delta as it and several other carriers offer numerous daily flights to Asia. From the Seattle-Tacoma airport, or "Sea-Tac" as the locals call it, you can take the Link light rail service to downtown in about 45 minutes. Once there, you can tour the famous Pike Place market, visit the Aquarium, or go on a whale watching cruise. Other downtown attractions include the Museum of Pop Culture, and of course, the iconic Space Needle.

2. Denver, Colorado

You might not consider this to be a major international hub, but the Mile High City now offers 26 international flights to destinations such as Tokyo, London, Munich, Paris, Zurich, and Iceland. And if you're lucky enough to have a layover here, you can to take the commuter rail straight from the airport to downtown's Union Station in just 40 minutes. There, you will arrive within a few blocks of the Elitch Gardens amusement park, Coors Field, and the REI flagship store. Hop on RTD's free 16th Street shuttle bus, and you can visit the Colorado State Capitol, the Denver Museum of Art, and the lower downtown dining and entertainment district. Better yet, the local MARTA train system offers convenient service to downtown in just about 20 minutes. Attractions there include the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca Cola, and the College Football Hall of Fame. Other notable sites include the CNN Center, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, and the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library.

5. From London's Heathrow airport, you can take the Heathrow Express train to Paddington Station in just 30 minutes. Or, you can take the standard tube to nearly any part of the city. Walking though its terminals, you feel like you could be in a mall. But if you need to see the city, feel free to take one of the free tours offered by the airport. If you have more time, visit the Gardens by the Bay, the Singapore Flyer, the S.E.A Aquarium or go shopping along Orchard Road. And volunteering abroad is a fantastic way to not only enrich your travels, but also to help others in the process. There are great volunteer programs in virtually every country, so you're sure to find something that suits your skills, experiences, and interests.

Whether you're an animal lover, a healthcare professional, a teacher, a conservationist, or just an enthusiastic traveler with a desire to lend a hand, there's a volunteering position that's right for you. And while most of these programs do have costs attached to enrolling, there are usually scholarships available to lessen the costs, and many often include food and housing. Here are six amazing places you can give back while traveling. Help marine conservation efforts in Mexico

With nearly 5,800 miles of coastline that includes the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, as well as the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans, Mexico has a huge amount of ocean surrounding it. Those waters are home to part of the second largest barrier reef system in the world, the Great Mayan Reef, as well as numerous endangered species of sea creatures.

As a result, there are lots of opportunities within Mexico to help out with marine conservation efforts. Global Vision International (GVI) offers a highly rated program in the Yucatan region that requires volunteers to earn their scuba diving qualifications before joining the team to help secure the future of the local coral reefs. Other projects focus on turtle and crocodile conservation, like this one by Projects Abroad based on the Pacific Coast.

2. Work at Thailand's elephant sanctuaries

Elephants hold a special place in Thai culture and you'll find them represented everywhere from patterned prints on clothing to works of art. Despite this, it's now widely known that many of the captive elephants in Thailand are poorly treated from birth, and activities like elephant riding are cruel and unethical.

Thankfully, there are several sanctuaries and parks where previously captive and working animals come for rehabilitation. The Wildlife Friends Foundation runs volunteer programs helping abused elephants at the Elephant Refuge and Education Center near Bangkok, which provides a chain-free environment for the elephants to roam. And this GVI program in Chiang Mai aims to assist with the rehabilitation of elephants previously used in the tourism industry.

3. Provide health tips to children in South Africa

Though it has one of the most developed economies on the continent, South Africa also suffers from extremely high rates of poverty, and the availability of basic health care is limited in some regions. Among the various health concerns, a particularly prominent problem is the shockingly high occurrence of HIV/AIDS, with UNAids stating that South Africa has the "largest HIV epidemic in the world."

Facilities provide help for the many people unable to afford private health care as well as offering information on general health topics. This GVI program involves running workshops in local communities in and around Cape Town, mainly aimed at children, and teaching them healthy habits. If you're a health care professional or student, there are lots of programs that will require your skill set, like this one run by New Hope Volunteers, placing you in hospitals and clinics. (See also: 9 Unexpected Benefits of Volunteering)

4. Teach English in Cambodia

Cambodia is still recovering from the brutal regime of the Khmer Rouge, which slaughtered millions in its state-sponsored genocide, carried out between 1975 and 1979. One of the ways they're rebuilding is through the development of its burgeoning tourism industry, and an easy way to help is by teaching English to its residents.

Kids who have English as a second language under their belts will have much greater employment prospects in the future. This Go Overseas' program gives you the opportunity to undertake teachers' training while making a difference in the lives of the children you teach. Volunteer in Cambodia is another organization offering local placements in villages throughout Cambodia for periods of three months at a time. (See also: How to Make Good Money Teaching English in China)

5. Protect plants and animals in Costa Rica

The country of Costa Rica packs a biologically diverse punch for its relatively small size. It accounts for an estimated 4 percent of the planet's species. That means it's green, lush, and has countless species of plants and animals that live and thrive within its borders. Amazingly, hundreds of these species are actually endemic to Costa Rica and not found anywhere else.

And there are huge efforts being made to protect the wildlife that exists there. GVI has numerous projects in place including jaguar conservation, biodiversity conservation, and many more. Go Abroad offers a more agriculture-focused program in which volunteers help local farming communities with their daily farming activities, but also with reforestation efforts.

6. Support women's rights in India

India is a country that's developing rapidly, and according to Nasdaq, it has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. For some, its emergence as a global financial powerhouse means it's a land of endless opportunities. But for others, particularly those who live in more rural areas, the pace of change remains painfully slow.

It's a particularly tough environment for India's women, with widespread discrimination, inequality, and physical violence still commonplace. Numerous programs like this one from Kaya have been set up to help address this and support women to bring about the necessary changes through teaching English and providing education on women's rights. GVI also provides a program focused on promoting gender equality through working with disadvantaged women to help them overcome the social issues they face.

Like this article? While some issues are unavoidable (the hotel room isn't ready, the rental car breaks down, someone gets sick), there are others that can be avoided if you pay close attention to travel advisories. These warnings are given days, or even weeks, in advance, and can save you time, money, and in extreme cases, can even mean life or death.

1. Extreme weather

Weather is one of the easiest vacation issues to predict. Advances in meteorological science mean that weather experts can predict major problems with a reliable degree of accuracy. That means hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, torrential rain, extreme heat, blizzards, and even dangerous hail are literally on the radar for meteorologists.

If they warn you of these weather conditions before you are set to travel anywhere, rethink your plans. Extreme weather shifts like this can ground planes, cause car crashes, wipe out roads and buildings, and lead to serious injury and death. Don't mess with mother nature; you'll lose. (See also: 7 Times Travel Insurance Is Worth It)

2. Civil unrest and political upheaval

Most of us are fortunate enough to live in a land of (relative) peace. It's easy to forget that in some parts of the world, citizens are in a fight for justice, and their lives, on a daily basis. If you are not up on the latest news from around the world, you could be in for a rude awakening when you get to your destination. For example, the U.S. government is currently advising you to reconsider travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Venezuela, and Sudan, among others, due primarily to crime and civil unrest in these regions.

If you must travel to these areas, perhaps for work or a family emergency, you should exercise extreme caution and take the necessary steps to stay safe when you arrive. Consider a local trusted guide or escort who can advise you on where to go and, more importantly, where to avoid. (See also: 5 of the Safest Countries to Visit in 2018)

3. Health and disease

While modern medicine safeguards us and helps us recover from all kinds of communicable diseases, you cannot take any risks when traveling abroad. That's why you should always check with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) before taking any kind of trip.

Current notices at the time of this writing include an outbreak of malaria and listeriosis in South Africa, and malaria and yellow fever in Brazil. And since June of 2017, over 2,000 cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) have been identified in multiple countries in the Arabian Peninsula. You can get additional vaccines before you travel, or if you are really concerned, change your plans to a different location. (See also: 7 Ways to Avoid Getting Seriously Sick on Vacation)

4. Terrorism

Since September 11, 2001, terror attacks have increased substantially in some parts of the world. The State Department currently has Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Mali, North Korea, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen on the Do Not Travel list, primarily due to incidents of terrorism.

Many other countries get a Reconsider Travel notice for terrorism dangers, including Pakistan, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Lebanon. These terrorism warnings are constantly updated, so if you know you may be traveling to a part of the world that has been home to terrorist activity, check the list and consider your alternatives.

5. Crime and personal safety

While the two often go hand in hand, there are some distinctions to be made here. For example, many countries have a crime rate far in excess of anything you've experienced in the United States, and as such, you will not be prepared for the dangers without first researching the area. El Salvador, Burundi, Guatemala, Nigeria, and Mauritania are all flagged right now for problems with crime. Take the following precautions in places known to have a high crime rate:

Consider hotels that offer secure parking, doormen, and a dedicated and professional security staff.

Request security escorts, available for tourist groups.

Be aware of your surroundings.

Avoid walking or driving at night.

Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.

Do not use public ATMs.

Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry.

While crime can certainly result in physical danger, there is another kind of personal safety issue you need to be aware of. It's known as "risk of arrest and detention," and happens in places that have a volatile relationship with the U.S. North Korea is a prime example, and if you do not have special validation from the Department of State to travel in, or through, North Korea, you may find yourself in deep trouble.

6. Airline issues

Perhaps one of the most obvious, but often overlooked, travel warnings come from the airlines themselves. When we think of a travel advisory, we think of weather issues, health and disease, crime, and civil unrest. But one surefire way that your vacation can come to a grinding halt is when the airline has an issue. Anything from a computer system going down, to problems with labor negotiations and strikes, or mechanical malfunctions and serious delays, can put a serious dent in your plans.

Every airline has its own alert page, so if you know which airline you plan on taking, check out that alert page regularly.

7. War

We live in turbulent political times. While some wars have been raging for decades, others could break out at the drop of a hat. If you're not following politics closely, you should take notice if the region you are traveling to is about to go to war (or is actually at war and you didn't even know it). The most infamous places right now are Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Darfur, Myanmar, Nigeria, Libya, Sudan, Yemen, and the Central African Republic.

Other danger zones closer to home are some regions of Mexico. Since 2006, the Mexican drug war has had over 106,000 casualties, with almost 15,000 of those coming in 2017 alone. The Mexican states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, and Tamaulipas are all currently on the Do Not Travel list due to crime. (See also: 4 Affordable Destinations That Are Safer Than You Think)

8. Geological disasters

This is a broad term, because you could easily put extreme weather into this category. But in this instance, it's reserved for natural disasters. For example, when Iceland's volcano Eyjafjallajökull blew in 2010, massive clouds of ash made travel impossible for millions of people. An earthquake warning, or the threat of a volcanic eruption or a landslide, should be taken very seriously. If you're planning on traveling to a place known for these kinds of natural disasters, and there's evidence that you could be caught in something horrific, change your plans.

Like this article? However, without an understanding of the differences between using an ATM at home and abroad, you could end up in serious trouble. Here are 11 common ATM mistakes to avoid while overseas.

1. Using your credit card for ATM withdrawals

Credit cards typically charge larger fees when you take out a cash advance at an overseas ATM. You’ll be charged a cash advance fee, probably an ATM fee, and possibly a foreign transaction fee (unless you have a credit card with no foreign transaction fees). Plus you’ll instantly be charged interest on the cash advance at a higher rate than your purchase APR.

Do yourself a favor: Only take out money using your debit card and save your travel rewards card for direct purchases.

2. Not getting a checking account with no ATM fees

Even if you're using the ATM of the same institution that you bank with at home, you're still likely to get hit with ATM fees just for taking money out. Avoid this by signing up for an account that promises no international ATM fees. Several U.S. banks and financial institutions offer zero ATM fees, and even if the ATM applies one, you'll likely get reimbursed at the end of the month. (See also: 11 Ways to Avoid Bank Fees While Traveling)

3. Thinking ATMs can do the same transactions as in the U.S.

If you're hoping to pay bills, transfer money between accounts, or even see an accurate account balance when you’re abroad, think again. Many foreign ATMs are relatively one dimensional, particularly when it comes to using them with nonnative cards. Be prepared to only withdraw cash from ATMs and setup online banking or use your bank's app for anything else.

4. Not telling your bank about your trip

As part of their fight against fraudulent activity, banks will often take the precaution of freezing your account whenever anything unexpected happens. This includes you attempting to withdraw cash in another country if you haven't made them aware of your travel plans. All it takes is a quick visit, phone call, or online update to let your bank know where you're going and for how long, and you should have no issues.

5. Not counting your money upon withdrawal

Though no one wants to be standing around in an unfamiliar country flicking through wads of cash, you also don't want to be shortchanged by the ATM. Before you head off, always discreetly check that the amount you've received matches the amount you've requested so you can sort out any issues while you're still there. It's also better to withdraw cash during the day, and from an actual bank premises while it's open so you can simply pop in if a problem arises.

6. Not setting up bank app notifications

Most banks now have apps with systems to alert you when various activities are detected on your account. The most important of these to set up is receiving a notification whenever a withdrawal is made, even if it's one that the bank doesn't suspect as fraudulent. This way you can easily keep track of everything happening on your account while overseas and quickly recognize if something is amiss. (See also: 6 Big Ways ATMs Are Changing)

7. Not keeping a copy of your ATM card somewhere

If your card gets stolen, swallowed by an ATM, or simply lost, then it's important to have backup copies of it. These will allow you to cancel the card quickly as well as order a replacement for when you get home. Rather than having paper copies, it's a better idea to create a digital backup (a photo) and store it somewhere safe. (See also: The ATM Just Ate Your Deposit. Now What?)

8. Not changing the daily withdrawal limit

Many travelers choose to lower their daily withdrawal limit when they head overseas. This means that in the event of someone getting ahold of your card and attempting to withdraw cash fraudulently, they will only gain access to a certain amount.

It's also wise to use two accounts to manage your cash. Set up the one without a connected bank card to keep the majority of your travel cash in, and use online banking to transfer money to the other account with the bank card. Your money will then be doubly protected if your card goes missing.

9. Not checking ATMs for skimmers

This is something you should be doing regardless of where in the world you're using an ATM, even if it's at home. But having your card cloned in a foreign country can be even more traumatic, and sorting everything out in the aftermath an inconvenient process.

Always take a good look at the card slot before sticking your card in to make sure there's nothing suspicious about it, and if you're in any way concerned, move onto another one. (See also: 10 Tips to Save You from an ATM Skimmer)

10. Not having a small cash backup

Despite the fact that ATMs are now easy to find in virtually any corner of the world, it always pays to have a plan B in the event of something going wrong. The best way to do this is to always have a small cash backup that you keep somewhere safe separate from the rest of your cash, just for emergencies.

11. Not having your bank's phone number readily available

Unfortunately, sometimes the worst does happen and you can be stuck with a number of problems at the ATM. When it comes to banking, time can literally mean money in an emergency situation. That's why it's vital that you have your bank's phone number on hand so you can contact them quickly in a crisis. And remember to input the international dialing code if necessary.

Like this article? But before you start packing your suitcase and heading overseas for a tax-free life, keep in mind that U.S. taxation is based on citizenship, not residency. This means that regardless of what tax haven you base yourself in, you're still subject to U.S. tax regulations. As a U.S. citizen, you are obligated to inform the U.S. government of any income and assets held or earned overseas, and you will be taxed accordingly.

It's not all bad news, though. There are many ways that you could still significantly reduce the amount of tax you pay, including heading to one of the following destinations. (See also: 5 Tax Myths That Can Be Costly for Expats)

1. The Bahamas

The Bahamas is a little slice of tropical paradise that's long been a favorite getaway for warm weather lovers, boasting over 300 days of sunshine per year. Made up of around 700 islands blessed with countless white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and incredible coral reefs perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving, it's easy to see why. Though the islands lie just north of Cuba and slightly south of Florida in the Atlantic Ocean, they are considered Caribbean.

As if living on an exotic island doesn't sound enticing enough, the Bahamas also offers zero income tax, corporate tax, capital gains tax, and wealth tax. You only have to obtain residency, rather than citizenship, to access the tax-free benefits, but the country specifically aims to attract wealthy transplants. Though there are various ways to gain residency, purchasing a property of $1.5 million gets your application fast-tracked.

2. Monaco

A tiny sovereign nation lodged into the southeast corner of France and overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Monaco is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the French Riviera. Despite its diminutive size, this principality oozes glitz and glamour. The harbor brims with impressive yachts owned by the rich and famous, luxurious cars cruise up and down the palm-lined streets, and the beach is overlooked by some of the world's most expensive real estate.

One of the main reasons for its status as a magnet for the wealthy is its policy of not levying income taxes. To become a resident of Monaco, you need to get a temporary residence card, which will allow you to live in Monaco for 12 months. But you only need to live in Monaco for three months out of that year to maintain your residency.

Thanks to its location in the heart of Europe and convenient transportation, it's been a popular base for high roller individuals for decades. Many work elsewhere while maintaining residency in Monaco, allowing them to benefit from the lax tax regs. (See also: 13 Financial Steps to Take Before Retiring Abroad)

3. United Arab Emirates

Made up of an alliance of seven individual regions, each with their own absolute monarchy, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is one of the Middle East's most wealthy economic hubs. The country enjoys an opulent reputation for luxury shopping, seven-star hotels, fine dining, and extravagant night life options. Probably the best known state is Dubai, which has a magnificent skyline packed with skyscrapers, including the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest structure.

There are over three times as many expats living in the UAE as there are citizens, which highlights just how attractive life here is for outsiders. The main reason for this is the lack of income tax, in addition to high wages and good job opportunities. The UAE has, however, recently implemented excise tax and it launched a value added tax (VAT) at the beginning of 2018, meaning the cost of living will rise, if only slightly.

4. Bermuda

Another slice of Caribbean paradise, Bermuda is known for its pink sand beaches, incredible scuba diving sites, and for sharing its name with the mysterious and contentious Bermuda Triangle. Though it's a British island territory, it displays diverse and vibrant influences from the U.S., Africa, and European countries such as Portugal. This little island has many natural wonders to discover and an active calendar of arts and entertainment to enjoy.

As an established offshore financial center, Bermuda has a thriving financial industry that attracts many expats. It doesn't have any income tax, but there is a payroll tax in place, of which companies can pass up to 6 percent onto the employee.

Be warned, however: the cost of living in Bermuda is exorbitantly high, with rent for a 900-square-foot apartment topping $4,500, according to Expatistan. That could offset any benefits gained by low taxes. British Virgin Islands

Located in the Caribbean, the British Virgin Islands are made up of four main islands and around 50 smaller cays and islands that include some of the most exclusive in the region. Thanks to its geographical makeup, it's extremely popular among sailors, who, with members of a large yachting community, drop their anchors near the largely uninhabited islands they come across.

There are virtually no taxes levied on the British Virgin Islands, meaning there is zero capital gains tax, inheritance tax, estate duty, and corporation tax. Though there is technically an income tax, rates are set at zero, effectively making it null.

Gaining residency for the British Virgin Islands is not an easy process, though. You need to have already lived within the territory for 20 years. You are also only permitted to leave the territory for a maximum of 90 days per year unless it's for education or due to illness.

Like this article? (See also: 7 Ways to Avoid Getting Seriously Sick on Vacation)

People get sick while traveling all the time, and it's important to have a plan in place for if and when that happens. Falling ill in general can be an inconvenience, but if you fall seriously ill while abroad, it can be downright frightening.

Take measures to prepare yourself now by doing these six things when traveling abroad.

1. Research before you go

It's a good idea to do some research about your medical options while abroad. Some questions you will need to answer are:

Does your insurance company cover you while abroad?

Do you need to purchase temporary travel insurance?

What's the number for your insurance company?

Who is your emergency contact while abroad?

If your current health insurance policy does not provide coverage while abroad, you should consider purchasing a short-term travel policy. It's best to purchase travel medical insurance before your departure, but you may still have options after, as well. Take special note of all medical information and keep it on you while traveling. You never know when you might need it. (See also: Everything You Need to Know About Buying Travel Insurance)

2. Keep a first aid kit on hand

Most minor medical issues can be fixed easily with a first aid kit. Many travelers, however, don't keep a kit handy. A small injury can easily become more serious if you are having to track down appropriate medicine or treatment at the last minute in a foreign country. It's also helpful to keep cold and flu medication on hand in case you need it.

Keep a small kit stocked with Band-Aids, ibuprofen, antibiotic ointment, and backups of any medication you take. (See also: The 5 Best First Aid Kits)

3. Contact the embassy or consulate

In a serious medical situation, you should contact the local U.S. embassy. The embassy can arrange for immediate medical care, should you need it. They can also wire over money as needed and inform your family and friends at home. Keep in mind, while the embassy can help to arrange all medical care, the bill will still be your responsibility to pay.

4. Keep your insurance card and ID available

In the event that you become injured or ill, make it easy for those around you. Keep your insurance card, emergency contact, and ID available at all times. If you are traveling with children, be sure to keep their information on you as well so you can provide it in the event of an emergency.

5. Seek local care

Once, while at the beach in Italy, one of my travel companions was stung by a jellyfish. We had no idea what to do, so we went to a local pharmacy. The pharmacist on duty knew exactly what we needed, even though we didn't speak the same language.

The point is, the local doctors and pharmacists are experts at treating common injuries sustained where they live. They know the common threats to visitors, whether it's a sunburn, a trip or fall, or altitude sickness, and can treat it accordingly.

6. Take preventative measures

Illnesses abroad often happen because travelers are on a different routine. You can prevent many sicknesses abroad by taking extra care of yourself and those you are traveling with. Be sure to drink plenty of clean water, take time to rest, use sunscreen, and avoid eating too much or too little food. The reasons for retiring abroad are plenty: adventure, lower cost of living, higher standard of living, and better weather, to name a few. But lists of the most affordable places to retire overseas are often dominated by Latin American and Asian countries.

What if you've had your heart set on moving to Europe, though? While a luxury French villa or a vineyard in Tuscany may be out of reach for many people, there are still history-steeped places in Europe where you can experience old-world charm on a limited budget. Here are some of the cheapest cities you can settle down in across various European countries. (See also: How to Choose the Perfect Country to Retire in)

1. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest has long been known for its spire-topped skyline, cultural flair, and thermal baths. The city is an easy place to explore or just relax and do nothing, with plenty to see and do, but a laid-back vibe that's perfect for retirement.

Budapest is also known for its affordability, with the cost of living running similar to some medium-priced cities in the U.S., according to the cost-tracking website Expatisan. Rent for a 900-square-foot furnished apartment ranges from $675 to about $1,000 per month. Utilities should cost around $117, and internet around $15. Dinner for two at a neighborhood pub will run you around $22, and a three-course Italian meal for two with wine will set you back $43. (See also: 13 Financial Steps to Take Before Retiring Abroad)

2. Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is another European city whose cultural profile has become well-known. Tourists flock to this interesting hub for its fairy tale architecture, cobblestone streets, outdoor cafes, and world famous beer. The picturesque Vltava River, spanned by more than 30 bridges, forms the soul of the city, with gardens, public squares, and castles rounding out the romantic cityscape.

But Prague has more going for it than its stunning views and cheap, free-flowing beer. The city has also remained affordable despite its popularity, making it a smart stop for expat retirees.

According to Expatisan, the average cost to rent a furnished 900-square-foot apartment in Prague is only $888 for an average place, or $1,260 per month in the most expensive areas. A liter of milk costs less than $1, two pounds of tomatoes will set you back around $2, and a beer in the supermarket costs only 88 cents.

Heck, a bottle of red table wine only costs around $7. If that doesn't bode well for an affordable retirement, we don't know what does. (See also: How to Get the Most Out of Your Overseas Retirement)

3. Algarve, Portugal

Tourists flock to the Algarve region of Portugal for its scenic ocean cliffs, famous beaches, and many museums. The region is also brimming with historical sites, including old town centers, medieval fortresses, castles, and ancient forts.

Living in Algarve is surprisingly affordable, and that's despite the region's proximity to the water. According to cost of living website Numbeo, rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center could cost as little as $346, while a three-bedroom apartment in a central location costs an average of $614 per month. Basic utilities (heat, air conditioning, electricity) will add another $87 to your housing costs, on average, they note.

Food can also be insanely affordable. A pound of bananas may only cost 54 cents, for example, while a three-course dinner for two in a midrange restaurant may cost as little as $36. (See also: Avoid These 5 Mistakes When Retiring Abroad)

4. Pescara, Italy

Pescara, Italy is ideally located along the country's eastern coast, a few hours from Rome and Naples. Here, you can enjoy a slow Italian lifestyle with some of Italy's most gorgeous waterfronts, and all within a day's reach of some of the world's most important historical sites.

You can also save a bundle in the process. Rent in Pescara is surprisingly affordable, with a furnished, 900-square-foot apartment in one of the city's most expensive areas costing just $936, on average, according to Expatistan. Rent in a "normal" area, not necessarily considered to be an expat neighborhood, could cost as little as $679. Add $130 for utilities to the bill and your total housing costs could easily stay below $1,000 per month year-round.

Eating out in Pescara can be expensive, but buying your own staples will save you money. Two pounds of potatoes cost about $1.65, bread for two people for a day runs $1.25, and a bottle of table wine will set you back about $7. (See also: What You Need to Semi-Retire Abroad Right Now)

5. Bucharest, Romania

Bucharest is a great destination if your goal is learning about history, including communism and its role in Romania. Attractions include a long list of gorgeous historical buildings and monuments, a communism-themed walking tour, a Holocaust memorial, and even a Romanian kitsch museum.

If you're looking for an affordable place to retire, put Bucharest on your list. A 900-square-foot furnished apartment in the expensive parts of Bucharest will only set you back $723, while an apartment in more middle-class areas could cost as little as $451 per month. Average utility bills only cost around $100 as well, making your overall housing costs affordable.

Food can also be downright cheap. A three-course Italian meal for two, including wine, in an expat area costs around $43, a loaf of bread is around 62 cents, and a pound of potatoes is around 30 cents. Pula, Croatia

If you're looking to retire somewhere off the beaten path, Croatia should be on your radar. The seaside city of Pula is of interest specifically due to its low cost of living and amazing history. The harbor town is dotted with well-preserved Roman ruins, including an intact amphitheater and its own Temple of Augustus. Museums here house ancient artifacts, as well as contemporary art.

Pula is considered one of the most affordable spots in Europe, with a 900-square-foot furnished apartment in an expat area costing about $580 per month and a similar flat in an average area running $445. Utilities add another $120 per month on average, but a monthly transportation pass costs just $35.

You can have a great time dining out in retirement, too, in Pula. A basic dinner for two at a neighborhood pub runs $23, and a beer just $2.50.

Like this article? Organizing flights, accommodations, packing, getting to the airport, and making sure everything at home is sorted for while you're away can easily frazzle the nerves. Because of this, the last thing you want to have on your mind is whether or not your destination is a safe place to visit.

What constitutes a safe country is clearly a contentious and subjective question, and there's no definitive way to determine it. Different countries have their own methods to measure crime, and of course, threat levels are constantly changing. Currently, there are 45 countries that the U.S. Department of State has issued travel warnings for and there's even a Worldwide Caution in place.

The good news is that by many measures, the U.S. actually ranks quite poorly, meaning that by leaving the country, you're likely to be heading somewhere already considered safer. However, choosing a destination that's considered "safe" can still be tricky. Here are five of the safest countries to travel to in 2018, based on current crime rates and existing security alerts.

*All statistics are taken from the U.S. Department of State and the Institute for Economics and Peace's 2017 Global Peace Index report's Societal Safety And Security Domain section.

1. Iceland

Iceland's popularity has skyrocketed over the past decade with visitor levels rising from around 422,000 annually in 2006 to over 1.7 million in 2016. This is thanks largely to a concerted effort by tourism authorities to increase visitor numbers, as well as Icelandic airlines offering affordable transatlantic stopover options. As a result, the gorgeous landscapes, giant volcanoes, natural hot springs, spurting geysers, and vast glaciers, plus the likelihood of witnessing the magical Northern Lights have made Iceland extremely popular.

Iceland is also one of the safest countries on earth, coming in at the number one spot on the Global Peace Index, as it has done continuously since 2008. It has extremely low crime rates, and has no current alerts or warnings issued by the Department of State. The Overseas Security Advisory Council report 2017 report for Iceland states "crime continues to be lower than in most developed countries and countries of similar size and demographics." (See also: How to Wisely Choose Your Next Travel Destination)

2. Sweden

This stunning Scandinavian country nestled in between Norway and Finland celebrates the outdoors in a big way. Its vast natural landscapes are decorated with huge lakes, fast-flowing rivers, and gigantic glaciers, as well as forests, sandy beaches, and hundreds of coastal islets. The country's wide reaching Freedom to Roam laws mean that every citizen has the opportunity to take full advantage of them. It also has a number of charming, colorful cities packed with culture and history such as Stockholm, Malmo, and Gothenburg.

Sweden is rated fifth on the Global Peace Index table, making it one of the safest countries to visit. Though it has extremely low levels of crime, OSAC's 2017 Sweden report claims that the national averages are bolstered by low rates outside of the urban areas. It does, however, concede that, "The general crime rate in Sweden is below the U.S. national average," and there are no Department of State warnings at this current time.

3. New Zealand

Spread across two main land masses known as the North and the South islands, New Zealand, and more specifically Queenstown, is often referred to as the "adventure capital of the world." It's where the first commercial bungee jump was born, is a popular site for paragliding, sky diving, and hang gliding, and you can also enjoy extreme water sports like jet boating. But it's not all pulse-raising activities; New Zealand is also considered a place to escape into nature and enjoy the widespread wildlife.

This country of two halves lands at number two on the Global Peace Index report as the first of only two countries outside Europe to appear in the top 10. There are no Department of State warnings on New Zealand and the OSAC 2017 New Zealand report says, "In general, crime is less prevalent in New Zealand than in major cities in the U.S."

4. Japan

Made up of hundreds of volcanic islands, Japan is well known for its diverse natural landscapes and its modern cities. Deeply rooted, centuries-old tradition sits seamlessly alongside contemporary cutting edge technology, and this unique combination of ancient and current can be seen in everything from the culinary scene to the architecture. Futuristic robot shows are as popular as wilderness hikes in national parks, and up-to-the-minute technology is as revered as the many temples and shrines.

As the other non-European entrant on the Global Peace Index, Japan appears at number 10 on the list. For a country of its size and stature, the crime rates are remarkably low, particularly for murder and gun crime, which some reports suggest has been virtually eradicated. With no travel alerts or warnings, it's certainly one of the safest options for 2018.

5. Portugal

Located in the southeast corner of Europe, Portugal has long been a popular tourist destination, thanks to its warm climate and diverse culture. In its role as one of the most prominent sea faring nations, Portugal built up a vast global empire. Historic cities, bountiful beaches, and fine food and wine are what attract the majority of visitors to this fascinating country.

Coming in at number three on the Global Peace Index, Portugal "has a relatively low rate of violent crime" and "is a generally safe country" according to the 2017 OSAC Portugal Report. It's worth noting, however, that petty thefts and muggings are said to be higher in tourist areas around peak times. Often it's because of the fantastic and unique locations available, but sometimes even Hollywood producers are after a deal, and filming in a cheaper country can drastically slash a budget. Here are five famous film settings that just happen to be in affordable countries.

Tomb Raider — Angkor Archaeological Park, Cambodia

Angelina Jolie's Tomb Raider series famously features the breathtaking backdrop of the world's largest religious monument, the Angkor temple complex. The majestic ruins of this vast 12th century complex, and specifically the Angkor Thom temple, are an integral part of the film's plot and helped to cause a huge explosion in visitors to the site. The intricate religious carvings, the trees whose tangled roots seamlessly entwine the temple walls, and the sheer size of the complex defy belief.

A day ticket to the UNESCO designated park will cost you $37, but the relatively high entrance price is offset by the good value you'll get for your dollar elsewhere. Numbeo puts the cost of living in Cambodia at almost 37 percent lower than in the United States. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant is priced at just $2.65, and a double room in a midrange hotel can be found for as little as $10.

I've traveled in Cambodia extensively and I find it to be one of the best value destinations in the world. (See also: Amazing Destinations You Can Go to With Rewards Points and Miles)

Eat, Pray, Love — Bali, Indonesia

Though the film Eat, Pray, Love wasn't a critical success, it captured audiences' hearts and minds and went on to become a box office smash. This was in part thanks to the depictions of the various locations Julia Roberts' character finds herself in. Filming took place in Italy, India, and Bali, Indonesia, where protagonist Liz Gilbert finally finds true love and the inner peace she's been searching for. You can satisfy your own wanderlust by visiting some of the key locations in Bali such as the gorgeous Padang Padang beach, and the town of Ubud.

Bali (and Indonesia as a whole) is an extremely cheap place to visit, with the cost of living 45 percent lower than in the U.S., according to Numbeo. I've stayed in some lovely places in Indonesia and in my experience, for a room in a hotel that looks similar to the villa where Roberts stays in the film, you'll pay around $20 per night. Entrance to the Ubud Monkey Forest featured in the movie is around $3.75 and a meal at an inexpensive restaurant in Indonesia will cost you less than $2. (See also: 5 International Destinations Anyone Can Afford)

Slumdog Millionaire — India

This colorful extravaganza, which won multiple Oscar awards, was set and filmed on location in Mumbai, India. For many, it managed to truly capture the magic and drama of this chaotic city. From the slums where the lead character Jamal was raised, to the scenes of the stunning Taj Mahal, the movie is beautifully shot. The closing scene where Jamal is finally reunited with Latika before they dance along with hundreds of extras was filmed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, one of India's busiest train stations.

Entrance as a foreigner to the Taj Mahal will cost you around $15, but many of the filming locations are public places so they won't cost anything to visit. Numbeo shows the cost of living in India at almost 65 percent below that of the U.S., with an inexpensive meal coming in at around $2.30. Midrange hotel rooms are priced around $30. You can also go on a walking tour around one of Mumbai's slums for around $13, where much of the profits go back into the local community. (See also: 25 Incredible Places You Must Visit Before You Die)

Frida — Mexico City, Mexico

Based on the life of the popular Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, the movie Frida won wide critical acclaim and eventually went on to win two Oscars. Kahlo spent the majority of her life living on the outskirts of Mexico City, so it's only natural that this is where much of the shooting took place. The famous Casa Azul, where she lived with husband Diego Rivera and eventually died at age 47, is a museum you can visit for around $12.

A day trip to the awe inspiring Aztec pyramids of Teotihuacan, where Kahlo and Leon Trotsky get to know each other in the movie, will cost you around $40 for an organized tour. It's also possible to reach them by public, and the entrance fee is just $4.

Numbeo puts the cost of living in Mexico at over 50 percent lower than in the U.S., with a meal at an inexpensive restaurant coming in at around $5. A midrange hotel room will cost around $30 per night.

The Beach — Koh Phi Phi Leh, Thailand

The Beach is credited with driving a huge amount of tourism Thailand's way, as it introduced the wider world to the secluded and unspoiled magnificence of the country's islands. The island of Koh Phi Phi Leh, where most of the movie was set and filmed, is now one of the most popular places to visit in Thailand. It's no longer the deserted lagoon that's portrayed in the movie, but it's still as charming as ever. Visitors flock to enjoy the warm turquoise waters that lap the golden beaches, as well as the renowned island night life.

Koh Phi Phi Leh isn't actually an inhabited island, but is part of the Koh Phi Phi archipelago, which includes Koh Phi Phi Don, where most visitors stay. From here you can book a day trip to Koh Phi Phi Leh, which is a half-hour boat ride away. A sunset cruise, where you'll encounter fewer tourists and get to witness the bioluminescent plankton in the waters once it's dark, costs around $50 per person.

The cost of living in Thailand is more than 36 percent lower than in the U.S., with an inexpensive meal costing less than $2, according to Numbeo. For a double room at a midrange hotel or guesthouse on Koh Phi Phi Don, you'll pay about $30.

Like this article? Though it may sound like a fantasy, there are some indicators that would suggest you could be enjoying this lifestyle right now. You don’t have to meet every criteria below, but if you already meet some of them, then there’s potential you could make it happen. Here’s what you need to make semiretirement a reality.

No debt

Consumer debt is one of the biggest enemies of semiretirement. If you’ve got outstanding balances left, right, and center, a large chunk of your income will likely be going toward paying off the interest on these debts. Paying off credit card debt is the first thing to address before you can make this big lifestyle change.

However, if you’re not lining the pockets of American financial institutions month after month, then this is the perfect starting point to planning your new life. You’re already in a position of financial independence that allows you far more control over what you do with your finances.

Willingness to strip down your lifestyle

One of the keys to making your money stretch further is being able to strip down your lifestyle and live within your means. Though it might seem daunting at first, it will become easier with a proper plan in place and an appreciation for the goals you've set.

The idea behind semiretirement is not to make you live on the breadline, but unless you have a huge stash of dollars saved up, you will probably need to make adjustments to your budget. These should be offset by the benefits of living in a country you love with potentially better weather than home. The extra time that you have to do things you’re passionate about helps as well.

A portable, good-paying job

The term semiretirement suggests that you’re still going to have to work for a living, but it also points toward working fewer hours. There are plenty of jobs that you can do from anywhere in the world, and if you already have one of these, then you’re a step ahead. (See Also: 8 $100K Jobs You Can Do Online)

But even if you do currently clock in to your cubicle every day, don’t worry, there’s still hope. It’s never too late to become location independent, and moving abroad could actually open up opportunities for you rather than close them down. Teaching English, freelance writing, editing, translating, travel blogging, and working as a divemaster are just a few of the many jobs you can choose from. (See also: 4 Creative Remote Jobs That Can Supplement Your Retirement Income)

Some passive income

Pocketing some passive income is the perfect way to supplement a life of semiretirement as it essentially allows you to earn while you’re not actually working. Though keeping the dollars coming in even while you sleep sounds too good to be true, earning a passive income is actually well within reach for lots of people. (See also: 5 Ways to Make Passive Income Online)

Starting a blog, selling an ebook, and creating an online course are just a few ways it’s possible to begin earning passive income. The money could then be used to supplement your other earnings, or it could even work to become your only source of income. Though it’s a lot of effort upfront, once established it only requires a small amount of upkeep, so it will allow you far more free time.

A cheap country

By moving to a cheaper country, you can drastically reduce your living costs overnight without making drastic changes to your quality of life. Because the U.S. is relatively expensive compared to the majority of the rest of the world, you’re not short on options to find somewhere you can live for less.

There are plenty of countries where you can have an extremely comfortable existence for less than $1,000 per month, which fits virtually any semiretirement budget. Another option is to travel between cheap countries rather than staying in one place, and if you’re a travel lover, this may be even more appealing. (See also: 5 Countries Where You Can Retire for $1,000 a Month)

Savings for a rainy day

Having savings in place is the most important part of any kind of early retirement, but it’s particularly important if you’re living abroad. It’s absolutely essential that you have the funds to cover emergencies as it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to fall back on any kind of state aid.

These savings should be on top of your regular retirement fund, as you don’t want your retirement account to take a big hit if something does go wrong. It doesn’t need to be a fortune, but you need enough extra to get you back to the U.S. on short notice if necessary.

Possessions you can sell

If you have possessions that you no longer need and can sell before you leave, this could boost your semiretirement fund quite significantly. Things like a vehicle, furniture, or even old clothes can bring in an extra injection of dollars and make the transition easier.

Doing this might speed up the time frame you’ve put in place for moving abroad, and selling off a few unwanted belongings is also a great way to build your rainy day fund. Depending on the value of the stuff you’re selling, it might even be enough to create one straight away.

A house you could rent out

Owning property can be a great bonus if you’re able to rent it out for a profit when you move abroad. If you own the property outright, or the rental income is enough to cover your mortgage and maintenance, plus provide you with extra income on top of that, then you’ve got another form of passive income.

Though you could feasibly sell the property to give you a chunk of cash, in many cases, it makes more sense to hold onto the income-generating asset. The more sources of income that you have, the easier it will be to make the move into semiretirement.

Like this article? You've surely done everything to avoid this outcome, and now all there is to do is take the practical steps to set everything right.

This Is Not the Time to Panic

Panicking will not help the situation, and may put you in more harm. The best thing you can do now is to take a deep breath and prepare to handle the logistics required, calmly and pragmatically.

Make a Report With the Local Police

This is important, not because the police will necessarily be able to find the thief and return your belongings to you, but because this will give you a written record of the items that have been stolen. The police report will come in handy if you need to make any claims with your insurance, and it will also be important to get replacement travel documents.

Many countries require you to have some form of ID on you, so if you ever get questioned, you can show the authorities this police report and avoid getting yourself into further trouble.

Cancel Credit and Debit Cards

You'll need to make a call to your bank to cancel any credit cards that have been stolen. If you happened to have made a photocopy of your cards (or a smartphone image), you will find that very helpful right now, since they have the right toll free number printed on them for international calls. Plus, you'll be able to provide customer service with your account information seamlessly.

If you don't have this information conveniently copied, that's okay, too. You can find the phone number for your bank or credit card provider online. Even without your card number, they will be able to identify you and find your account information based on a series of security questions. (The exact questions will depend entirely on your particular bank's security system.)

At this point you, can decide if it makes sense to have a card mailed to you internationally. They will probably have an express service and should be able to get a card to you within a few days.

While you're on the phone, make sure to copy down your account information so that you have it on hand in case you need to call them again to further sort things out.

Call Your Travel Insurance Agent

Of course, not everyone has the foresight to buy travel insurance, but if this is something you purchased before your trip, now is the time to take advantage of it. If you do have a comprehensive travel insurance plan, you can call them and they may be able to set you up with someone who will help you with accepting money as well as offer support in other ways.

Depending on your plan, they may even cover the cost for you to fly home. There may be some fees associated with this, so it may not be the most cost-effective way to do it, but it is a safety net that you can rely on if needed.

Get Cash

If your bank has international locations, you can go into a branch to get access to your money. If you need an emergency transfer, you can often get one through Western Union.

Keep in mind that Western Union will require some sort of identification for you to be able to accept a transfer, so if you have no form of ID, you will have to have a trustworthy friend help you accept the money. Sometimes hotels offer money wire services for their guests, too.

Get a Replacement Passport

If your passport was stolen, you're going to need to go to the local embassy to get a replacement travel document. You'll have a choice of getting a temporary travel passport — which takes minimal processing time — or you can wait a little bit longer for another permanent passport. You will have to pay for the passport though, so make sure you have cash or your new credit card when you apply.

Take a Step Back and Put Things in Perspective

Getting material things stolen is not ideal, but your health and safety are really the most important. There is always something to be grateful for and positive thinking is one of the best things you can do to cope with an experience like this. There's no use getting paranoid or ruining the rest of your trip — just learn from what has happened, and try not to make the same mistakes again. There are always things that are out of your control, so don't beat yourself up about it either.

Has this happened to you? There are so many great international cities that are beautiful — and actually affordable.

Here are five great cities based on a high quality of life for a very low-cost of living, taking into consideration good nightlife, great restaurants, a buzzing atmosphere, large grocery stores, and fast Wi-Fi.They're not rural, rustic, or lacking in amenities, either. (See also: 5 International Destinations You Can Visit for $50 a Day)

Note: Cost comparisons were found at Numbeo.com and Internet speeds are from InternetSociety.org.

1. Guanajuato, Mexico

Population: 174,000

Language: Spanish

Apartment Rent: $400+ per month

Cost Comparison: $1,364 per month in Guanajuato would go as far as $7,200 per month in New York. (Guanajuato is 5x cheaper.)

Average Internet Speed: Download = 11 mb/s, Upload = 5.5 mb/s

Possibly the most romantic historical town on Earth, Guanajuato really has it all. Excellent cafes, beautiful parks and plazas, a buzzing and young nightlife, and a captivating history that can be seen and felt on countless cobblestone streets.

Most people who plan to visit Guanajuato for a day end up staying a week, and those who plan to stay for a week, end up buying an apartment and staying for a lifetime. Such is the undeniable pull that this colonial town has on first-time visitors.

You can find apartments here for under $400/month, a meal in a restaurant will cost you around $8 and you can eat delicious gorditas and sopes on the street for around $2.

There is Wi-Fi in pretty much every restaurant and even in a few of the city parks, plus there are some good grocery stores, supermarkets, and pharmacies as well as a few quality hospitals nearby.

If you get bored of the small old town of Guanajuato, you can venture into some nearby villages like San Miguel de Allende or the city of Guadalajara. A five- hour bus ride (or three-hour drive) will get you to Mexico City where you have excellent flight connections to pretty much anywhere in the world.

2. Plovdiv, Bulgaria

Population: 338,000

Language: Bulgarian

Apartment Rent: $200+ per month

Cost Comparison: $1,496 per month in Plovdiv would go as far as $7,200 per month in New York. (Plovdiv is 5x cheaper.)

Internet Speed: Download = 33 mb/s, Upload = 22 mb/s (18th fastest on Earth)

Perhaps you've never heard of Plovdiv, and you've never considered living in Bulgaria. But once you step foot in the enchanting old town, or walk along the mile-long pedestrian street — the longest in Europe — you'll wonder why nobody has told you about this place.

Plovdiv sits at the center of Bulgaria and it is surrounded by beautiful vineyards and a vast, green countryside. A scattering of villages can be found within a 50-mile radius and each one seems to have its own winery.

The town itself is under renovation with many "up-and-coming" neighborhoods being revived in time for the city being named the 2019 European Capital of Culture.

Kapana (aka "The Trap") is one such neighborhood that has seen a boom in recent years with new shops, restaurants, craft bars, and nightclubs popping up almost every day.

A nice apartment in Plovdiv can cost as little as $200 per month, while a meal in a nice restaurant will only set you back around $4. A bottle of wine in a restaurant will not likely cost you more than $6, and a beer will be under $2.

The city has excellent and inexpensive shopping, a few good grocery stores, and a reputable hospital nearby.

Living in Plovdiv is never dull, with shows and concerts playing in a 1,000-year-old Roman amphitheatre, live music played nightly at many bars, and numerous festivals and events going on throughout the summer.

The city is a two-hour drive from the nation's capital of Sofia — where there are flight connections to the rest of Europe and onward to other parts of the world.

3. Ohrid, Macedonia (FYROM)

Population: 55,000

Language: Macedonian

Apartment Rent: $200+ a month

Cost Comparison: $1,260 a month in Ohrid would go as far as $7,200 per month in New York. (Ohrid is 5x cheaper.)

Internet Speed: Download = 13 mb/s, Upload = 6.6 mb/s

Imagine renting an apartment with a lake view for less than $200 a month. Lake Ohrid is simply one of the most stunning places to live on Earth, and while summers can be busy with tourists (both local and foreign), somehow this place hasn't been fully discovered yet.

The cost of living in Ohrid (and all of Macedonia) is extremely low when compared to western countries, and the entire country boasts dramatic landscapes, from snowcapped mountains to pristine waterfalls and beautiful forests. Plus there are countless old churches, monasteries, and villages.

A meal in a restaurant will rarely cost you more than $8 ($3 at a cheap restaurant), beer will cost you less than $1.50, and a bottle of wine won't cost you more than $12 in a restaurant.

Macedonia is such a small country that you can spend a weekend anywhere within it's borders. When the temperature drops below zero for a couple of months in the winter, consider driving two hours north to the stunning Mavrovo National Park and Ski Resort for some great skiing and spa treatments.

The capital of Skopje is only a three-hour drive away and has flight connections to parts of Europe, from where you can travel onward to anywhere you wish to go.

There are some great shops and restaurants in Skopje, as well as some excellent hospitals.

4. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Population: 1.6 Million

Language: Bahasa Malaysian

Apartment Rent: $400+ per month

Cost Comparison: $2,322 per month in Kuala Lumpur would go as far as $7,200 per month in New York. (Kuala Lumpur is 3x cheaper.)

Average Internet Speed: Download = 6.6 mb/s, Upload = 5.1 mb/s

The cost of living in Kuala Lumpur isn't quite as low as the other cities listed above, the Internet isn't as fast, and the population is much higher, but this bustling Asian capital has everything you might need from a life abroad.

World-class shopping, great hospitals, well-stocked grocery stores, and cheap flight connections to almost anywhere, KL is without a doubt one of the best places for city-loving expats to relocate to.

If you tire from the buzz of the city, you can retreat to one of the region's luxurious and pristine beach destinations — which are all just a short (and extremely cheap) flight away.

5. Ubud, Bali

Population: 30,000

Language: Bahasa Indonesian

Apartment Rent: $300+ per month

Cost Comparison: $1,766 per month in Ubud would go as far as $7,200 per month in New York. (Ubud is 4x cheaper.)

Average Internet Speed: Download = 5 mb/s, Upload = 3 mb/s

You definitely wouldn't be the first person who decided to pack up their things and move to Ubud, but there's a reason this peaceful, green, yoga and meditation oasis has become so popular.

The town is a quiet spiritual hot spot, and yet it has many amenities and comforts that one might look for in a larger city center.

There are great restaurants, plenty of biking trails, and loads of accommodation options to choose from. One bedroom apartments usually start at $300 a month and there are a lot of street meals that you can have for under $2.

You can drive to the main city of Kuta for any major shopping needs and for flights to elsewhere in Indonesia — from where you can find lots of international flights.

Do a Test Run First

If you're seriously considering packing up all of your things and moving to a new city, you should always consider doing a test run. I love these five places and I would (and have) live there in a second. But everyone's different.

Book a holiday, and try each one out to decide which one is best for you. If you're looking to live a better life for a fraction of the price, these wonderful cities might just be your answer.

Did You Enjoy This Post?
