Here are six healthy routines that'll get you through a long winter season. Embrace the winter harvest</h2> <p>One of the best things about spring and summer is that the farmers markets come back to life with the fresh fruits and vegetables we love and crave. But don't let the winter blues hit your dinner plate. There is much to celebrate about the winter harvest, namely the incredible number of root vegetables that are satisfying, nutritious, and comforting. And they take almost no time to prep. One of my very favorite ways to put more color into my winter cooking is to chop up winter veggies that have been taking up space in my fridge or on the counter &mdash; carrots, beets, potatoes, etc. &mdash; coat with olive oil, salt, and pepper, and then pop them into a 400-degree oven for 30-45 minutes. You can also roast and mash them, or puree them into a soup. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize</h2> <p>Dry winter air saps the moisture from your body. Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated. And for your skin, feel free to use up those body lotions, body creams, and hydrating hair masks you have to treat yourself to as many at-home spa days as you want. Also, crank up the humidifer to counteract the drying effects of your heater in your home. Meditate and reflect</h2> <p>With cold winter weather, take the time to meditate, relax, and reflect in the comfort of your home. Turn on some relaxing music, close your eyes, and take a few moments every day to focus on your breath, check in with your mind and body, and think about the goodness in your life and the goodness you want to manifest. Winter is an excellent time for planning brighter, sunnier days that will be here soon, so take advantage of this down time to nourish yourself without spending a dime. Whether it's fiction or nonfiction, make sure your reading material during these darker days is uplifting to combat the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Do the same with the music or podcasts in your queue. Seek refuge in art</h2> <p>If you're going to be inside, there are few places better to be than in a museum. Surrounding yourself with beautiful images may even inspire you to create some art of your own, and that act of creation is guaranteed to boost your energy and sense of accomplishment. Going to a museum also gives you a chance to be surrounded by other art enthusiasts, and breaks that sense of isolation that you may feel during these chilly months. Many museums offer free entry, as well as free or discounted events and workshops during the winter months. Snooze</h2> <p>Do you find that this winter weather makes you feel a little sleepier than you are at other times of the year? Don't fight it. Listen to your body. Give your body and mind the rest it's asking you to take. It's completely natural for us to want more sleep with the fewer hours of daylight. Nature settles in for a long winter's nap during these months, and we should feel free and empowered to follow that lead. I just can't. My mind won't let me.&quot; The purpose of meditation is to get control of your mind, because what you think and the way you think have direct impacts on the quality of your life. You are your thoughts. Change your mind and you change everything.</p> <p>I completely understand my reluctant students, because I was one of them for most of my life. Then I did my first yoga teacher training, and I was required as part of my program to sit for 18 minutes a day. It was grueling. I never knew 18 minutes could last so long. I literally had to force myself to do it, and at first, I hated it. Over time, it changed me. That focused, disciplined practice is a staple of my life now, nearly a decade later.</p> <p>Over this decade, I've also come to realize that a sitting meditation isn't always the right method for all people all the time. Luckily, there are a number of other ways to bring that peace to our minds and bodies. (See also: <a href="http://www.wisebread.com/6-ways-meditation-can-make-you-a-money-master?ref=seealso" target="_blank">6 Ways Meditation Can Make You a Money Master</a>)</p> <h2>1. Open monitoring</h2> <p>Let's turn meditation on its head right from the start, shall we? Sit or lie down, and just let your mind do its thing. Maybe it will be a whirling dervish. Maybe you'll run through your grocery list or to-do items. Maybe every fear and anxiety you've had for the past 10 years will rush right in to take up space. Let it all happen. Take five minutes to consciously deepen your breath, and then spend the next 25 minutes just giving your mind as much rope as it needs. Many people who use this method find that they feel more empowered because they confront whatever it is that's bothering them. They also often have bursts of creativity when the 30-minute session is finished.</p> <h2>2. Focused physical activity</h2> <p>Pick any physical activity &mdash; walking, running, swimming, biking, jumping rope &mdash; and focus on your actions. How's your breath? What does each part of your body feel like as you move, all the way from the tips of your toes to the very top of your head. Concentrate on each area of the body, one at a time, as you're remaining active. Once you finish, consciously sit for a few moments and just observe how you feel, physically, mentally, and emotionally. That heightened awareness of your body and mind, and how they work together, can help you find your way to peace. Legs up the wall</h2> <p>Marita La Monica runs the online group The Mindful Rebels. She's bringing new ideas to yoga, meditation, and overall health through her writing, teaching, and activities. All of her posts are filled with inspiring ways to help us find our way to physical and mental health, no matter what starting point we're at. One of her recent posts reminded me of the great benefits of <a href="http://themindfulrebels.com/the-truth-about-shoulder-stand-why-its-not-the-queen-of-asana/" target="_blank">putting our legs up a wall</a>. Lie down on the floor, couch, or bed, and put your legs up the wall while your torso lies flat, effectively making an L-shape with your body with the help and support of the wall. Physically, this posture calms the nervous system, which over time helps to calm the mind. Conscious eating</h2> <p>How many times have you made or bought a quick dinner and sat down in front of the television while eating it? I'm as guilty of this as anyone, and still do this on occasion. (No one's perfect.) What I try to do as often as I can, though, is sit down with my meal wherever I am and focus on the food with no distractions. How does it taste? What's the texture? How do I feel as I eat it? How do I feel when I'm done? And during the meal, I also actively practice gratitude for the food I'm eating. Like the focused physical activity, this practice helps me become aware of the connection between my mind and my body.</p> <h2>5. A point of focus</h2> <p>Closing the eyes during meditation can trigger many emotional responses. My take is that if you feel uncomfortable closing your eyes, then don't do it. Instead, choose something to visually focus your attention. Some people like gazing into the flame of a candle. Others prefer looking at a piece of art, or even just a block of color. Even gazing at the floor or ceiling works for some people. The idea is to keep the gaze soft. You don't want to squint or intensely focus the eye muscles. You just want to give them something to look at that helps the mind settle.</p> <h2>6. Go outside</h2> <p>Nature is a very powerful moderator for our minds. I'm immensely fortunate that I live near Central Park in New York City. I'm there every day exploring its nooks and crannies. Sometimes I'm alone. Often, I'm with my dog or friends. That connection to the natural world, be it in your local park, the mountains, the woods, or on a lake, has a euphoric effect. Whenever I need to bring a sense of calm to my mind and body, I get as deep into nature as I can, breathe, and remind myself that we are all in this world together to make it the best place it can be for all living beings. Many people might consider that a worthwhile price to pay for a pain-free life. But according to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, only 5 percent of back pain patients are good candidates for surgery. And even among those who are, surgery doesn't always work.</p> <p>Another approach to easing a chronically aching back is opioid painkillers. But they come with their own risks, namely, the chance that the patient becomes dependent on, and later addicted to them. Drug overdose is now the leading cause of accidental deaths for adults in America, with more than 20,000 people dying in 2015 alone from overdoses of prescription painkillers.</p> <p>In her book, <a href="http://amzn.to/2lYntTo" target="_blank">Crooked: Outwitting the Back Pain Industry and Getting on the Road to Recovery</a>, investigative journalist Cathryn Jakobson Ramin chronicles her six-year investigation seeking answers for her persistent back pain. She started out believing she needed surgery, then ended up trying a controversial, heavily-advertised laser treatment, which didn't provide lasting relief.</p> <p>Through her research, she learned that the patients who achieve the most relief are usually those who take an active part in their own recovery, easing pain through various exercise protocols or through rehab programs that combine psychological treatment with intensive exercise.</p> <p>One surprising thing that Ramin learned is that it's often necessary to push through pain, ideally under the watchful eye of a qualified trainer or therapist. In fact, one cause of disability for many patients is not the pain itself, but the fear that too much movement will cause more pain, she learned. One renowned rehab expert, Ramin wrote, made his patients do &quot;exercises that were performed under supervision, at a prescribed dose, without dwelling on associated discomfort.&quot;</p> <p>Ramin isn't alone. Many medical authorities, alarmed by the opioid crisis and disheartened by the limits of invasive surgery, are recommending conservative treatments for lower back pain. Fortunately, many of these treatments are quite affordable, especially when compared to a $100,000 surgery.</p> <h2>1. A heating pad</h2> <p>This may seem old fashioned, but &quot;superficial heat&quot; is the first item on the American College of Physicians' (ACP) 2017 list of recommendations for treating low back pain. It's not that applying heat is expected to cure what's wrong with your back. It's that, as the guidelines state, &quot;most patients with acute or subacute low back pain improve over time regardless of treatment.&quot;</p> <p>Using a <a href="http://amzn.to/2lYqenI" target="_blank">heating pad</a> is mostly about feeling more comfortable while your body heals itself. For a one-time investment of just $10 to $50, it's worth a try.</p> <h2>2. Massage</h2> <p>Often back pain is caused by a muscle strain or muscle spasm, which may be eased by a visit to a massage therapist. At a cost of $50 to $150 a session, it's worth trying even if it doesn't work, because it usually feels good and helps you relax.</p> <h2>3. Acupuncture</h2> <p>Although the ACP calls the currently available evidence &quot;low to moderate quality,&quot; according to National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), results from a number of studies suggest that acupuncture may help ease chronic low-back pain. Routine visits cost $50 to $100, and Consumer Reports found that the average back pain patient spends $200 for a full course of treatment.</p> <h2>4. Chiropractic care</h2> <p>The most familiar chiropractic treatment is spinal manipulation. Although the ACP says the evidence that it works is &quot;low quality,&quot; spinal manipulation is nevertheless among the top recommendations for back pain by the physicians' group.</p> <p>However, one spine surgeon told me he recommends that instead of getting a spinal manipulation, you ask the chiropractor for soft tissue therapy such as active release &mdash; which is similar to a deep tissue massage.</p> <p>Consumer Reports pegs the cost of seeing a chiropractor as similar to acupuncture &mdash; about $200 for a course of treatment. However, unlike acupuncture, many health plans cover a portion of the cost for chiropractic care.</p> <h2>5. Ibuprofen</h2> <p>The ACP recommends &quot;nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs&quot; such as Advil. Doctors say it's important not to just pop an <a href="http://amzn.to/2AwsF64" target="_blank">ibuprofen</a> now and then, when the pain flares up, but to follow a regular regimen for the prescribed time, in order to quell the inflammation that may be causing the pain. At about $10 per bottle of 200 mg pills, this is a very affordable treatment.</p> <h2>6. Muscle relaxants</h2> <p>Some doctors prescribe a muscle relaxant for a short period, if your back pain is caused by muscle spasms. If so, the cost is generally limited to your insurance copay. If you have to pay full price, most prescriptions run from $10 to $200.</p> <h2>7. Rehabilitation programs</h2> <p>In <em>Crooked</em>, Ramin tried several programs that lasted for several weeks, with five sessions each week packed with supervised strengthening exercises, group therapy, and more. Working with highly trained professionals for weeks on end is not exactly cheap, though. The cost of a chronic pain rehab program can run you tens of thousands of dollars. But it costs significantly less than most back surgeries.</p> <p>Unfortunately, it may be more difficult to get insurance companies to cover the full cost of the pain program than it would be to get them to cover surgery. And taking weeks off work to go through the program would be a financial strain for many people as well.</p> <h2>8. Tai chi</h2> <p>One study found that 75 percent of back pain patients showed improvement after a 10-week tai chi program. Considering that many tai chi groups are free to join, and that organized classes are available for as little as $10 a session, this is a very affordable treatment option.</p> <h2>9. Yoga</h2> <p>Not just any yoga class is recommended for back pain patients. In fact, some of the experts interviewed in Ramin's book warned that certain yoga positions can make back problems worse and should be avoided. She learned that <em>Iyengar</em>, a style that requires lengthy teacher training, has been shown to help people with back problems. Such yoga classes are advertised for as little as $14 a session, and <a href="http://amzn.to/2Cud2xN" target="_blank">yoga DVDs</a> and online videos are also available. Osteopathy</h2> <p>Some patients report relief after visiting an osteopath, who performs manual adjustments similar to &mdash; but not identical to &mdash; what chiropractors do. One doctor of osteopathy explained to me that her discipline often blames an out-of-place or frozen sacrum (bottom vertebra) for back pain. She said she has been able to eliminate pain for most patients by gently repositioning this bone. Visits with an osteopath may be covered by insurance.</p> <h2>11. Exercise with a trainer</h2> <p>Of all the treatments she tried, the one Ramin found the most relief from was regular workouts with coaches recommended by back pain experts. A large portion of back pain is caused by weak muscles in the core area, such as abdominals and back muscles, and these trainers can help pinpoint which muscles need strengthening, and teach the exercises needed to get the job done.</p> <p>Working with an expert trainer can help a patient maintain good form, because, Ramin learned, it's all too easy to let muscle groups that are already strong do the movement and let the weaker muscles continue to loaf. You might pay $100 or more an hour for an expert trainer, making it not exactly inexpensive &mdash; but many find the relief worth the cost.</p> <h2>12. The program here allows for plenty of free time to make use of the excellent amenities. You'll also have time to take trips into the local village of Bakong, where there's a small market and a temple that's part of the Angkor Wat complex.</p> <p>Retreats last for six days and have a dedicated schedule of yoga, meditation, and chanting, as well as numerous seminars delivered by guest speakers in various related fields. Costs range from $260 for a place in a dormitory to up to $330 for a private bamboo hut, and include all of your meals. The food served here is a buffet style assortment of vegan dishes and is considered to be a key part of the holistic health approach taken at Hariharalaya.</p> <h2>2. Goa is one of the main yoga hubs and, as a result, has a great selection of retreats to choose from to suit all budgets. Swan Yoga caters to beginners right through to experienced yogis, and has a philosophy of Gurukula-style teaching. This is where students are welcomed to live side-by-side with teachers as part of their family, with the learning process becoming a natural byproduct.</p> <p>From October through May, Swan Yoga runs its signature Yoga Holiday, a one-week journey through meditation, chanting, and detox. It also offers a two-week Yoga Intensive Retreat package, which enables students to delve a little deeper. The Swan Yoga Holiday prices start at $400, while the Intensive Retreat runs from $775. On site there is a &quot;fake beach&quot; to relax on, and a jungle garden where many of the fresh fruit and vegetables are grown for the buffet-style meals that are included in the price. Accommodation comes in the form of budget, standard, and deluxe cottages, which are simple but very comfortable.</p> <h2>3. Serenity Eco Guesthouse &mdash; Bali, Indonesia</h2> <p><img src="https://www.wisebread.com/files/fruganomics/u5197/sunset_at_tanah_lot_in_bali_indonesia.jpg" width="605" height="340" alt="" /></p> <p>On the enchanting Indonesian island of Bali, in a tranquil fishing village called Canggu, you'll find the Serenity Eco Guesthouse. Though, as the name suggests, it is primarily a guesthouse, the vast majority of its visitors aren't just there for somewhere to lay their heads for the night. The main attraction is the comprehensive yoga schedule, which features up to 12 classes a day and includes various forms of yoga. They also have packages that encompass surfing, meditation, and life coaching for those who want a little extra.</p> <p>Seven-day yoga packages, which include six nights of accommodation, unlimited yoga classes, and a free breakfast, start at just $147 for shared dormitories. For the same package but with a private, air-conditioned room and private bathroom, prices start at $242. Though food beyond breakfast isn't included in the cost, the on-site Alkaline Restaurant serves vegetarian and vegan food with prices for a main dish ranging from about $2.25 to $3.75. On-site facilities include a 14-meter pool and a Vipassana meditation room. The retreat is also close to many of Bali's best known attractions.</p> <h2>4. Suan Sati &mdash; Chiang Mai, Thailand</h2> <p><img src="https://www.wisebread.com/files/fruganomics/u5197/buddha_image_thailand.jpg" width="605" height="340" alt="" /></p> <p>Though it's one of Thailand's largest cities, Chiang Mai has a laid back feel to it, completely removed from the mayhem of Bangkok. Slightly to the north is the small village of Ban Si Bunreuang where Suan Sati Yoga Retreat is based, surrounded by lakes, rice fields, and forests, and overlooked by picturesque mountains. The retreat considers itself a community, and encourages guests to integrate in the town by interacting with the locals and attending the Buddhist temple for ceremonies. You'll get a taste of traditional rural Thai life as well as becoming part of the Suan Sati family.</p> <p>Rather than offering set retreats, visitors are able to book as many days as they require. It is suggested, however, you spend at least a week here, and booking preference and discounts are given to guests who check in for longer durations. A week in a traditionally decorated bamboo dorm room will cost you around $250 and includes three plant-based, Thai-inspired meals a day. Additionally, you'll have full access to the daily schedule of yoga and meditation. Suan Sati's classes accommodate beginners and practiced yogis alike.</p> <h2>5. Casa Zen Guesthouse and Yoga Center &mdash; Santa Teresa, Costa Rica</h2> <p><img src="https://www.wisebread.com/files/fruganomics/u5197/dream_beach_nicoya_costa_rica.jpg" width="605" height="340" alt="" /></p> <p>Costa Rica has built a reputation as Central America's yoga capital over recent years, and people come from all over the world to study and practice here. Casa Zen Guesthouse and Yoga Center is located on the Nicoya Peninsula on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, and is just a stone's throw away from the sea. Located between two major surf breaks, Casa Zen welcomes both yoga lovers and surf fanatics in equal measure.</p> <p>There are two retreat options available, four nights or seven nights, which start at $106 and $168, respectively, in low season, or $110 and $175 in high season. This is for a dorm bed. Prices increase for private accommodations. Retreats include unlimited yoga classes, with a minimum of two scheduled per day, as well as a tropical breakfast. Other meals aren't included, but there is a professional kitchen for guests' use and there are also restaurants nearby (according to Numbeo, an inexpensive meal in Costa Rica is around $7). However, you may have plenty of money and still feel significant stress. That's because the <a href="http://view.ceros.com/ubs/investor-watch-treadmill/p/3" target="_blank">underlying cause of financial stress</a>, even for millionaires, is fear: either fear of not having enough money, or of doing the wrong thing with the money you do have and losing it all. Fear affects all of us, which means that no one is immune to financial stress.</p> <h2>What is stress doing to you?</h2> <p>While stress can have some <a href="https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/11/161114115346.htm" target="_blank">unexpected positive effects</a>, such as motivating you to save more money, the overall impact is negative. Get off social media</h3> <p>Social media isn't a cause of stress for everyone; however, for some people, it can be. Research shows that when social media leads to an increased awareness of stress or crisis in the lives of others, that awareness can trigger more stress in some people. It's referred to as &quot;<a href="http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/07421656.2016.1166832" target="_blank">the cost of caring</a>;&quot; it's as if stress becomes contagious and is transferred through these social media connections. If you find yourself feeling more worried and upset after being on social media, try taking a break. Piling other people's stress on top of your own isn't healthy. If your love of fitness rivals your love of animals, check out these ways to integrate your two passions for a healthier and happier lifestyle.</p> <h2>1. Goat yoga</h2> <p>Goats are frickin' adorable, that we knew already. But they've probably never been more adorable than when they're acting as therapy animals in the hot new exercise trend sweeping the nation that combines goats and yoga. Lainey Morse, who created the <a href="http://www.goatyoga.net/" target="_blank">Goat Yoga concept</a> on her farm in western Oregon, has people clamoring to get into her classes, which are starting to expand across the country.</p> <p>These classes progress as you might expect &mdash; humans move through yoga positions while the goats do whatever the heck they want, like jump on your back while you're in child's pose. Morse says the classes are helping people with anxiety and depression, but there are other mental and physical health benefits associated with this type of animal-assisted therapy, such as: reducing loneliness, lowering blood pressure, and diminishing overall pain. Horseback riding</h2> <p>If your fitness goals include abs of steel, hop on a horse. Riding equines requires a decent amount of core strength to stay balanced, and continued riding can improve posture in day-to-day activities. You'll develop better coordination, enhance muscle tone and flexibility (your inner thighs and pelvis get the biggest workout on a horse), and you'll also enjoy the meditative effects that come with focusing on the ride and staying on the horse. Giddy-up!</p> <h2>3. Tending to horses</h2> <p>If <em>riding </em>horses isn't your thing, then <em>tending </em>to horses can satisfy your urge to interact with the animals while staying fit. London-based Pilates educator Julie Driver &mdash; who uses the exercise system to enhance riders' skills &mdash; says that there are plenty of other ways to tone up in the company of mares and stallions.</p> <p>Alongside the benefits of riding itself, Driver suggests these other activities to break a sweat.</p> <h3>Mucking out soiled bedding in the stables</h3> <p>You'll feel the burn in your biceps and forearms after wielding that pitchfork for a period of time.</p> <h3>Carrying straw bales</h3> <p>The average straw bale weighs between 35 and 55 pounds, so replacing the soiled straw that you removed while mucking out the stall will have you burning calories and using your upper body as you move the bales around.</p> <h3>Grooming your horse</h3> <p>Drive suggests using long sweeping strokes to really clean your horse and move your shoulders.</p> <h3>Filling and carrying water buckets</h3> <p>Bend your knees and pick up those buckets. Preferably one in each hand to make sure you're balanced.</p> <p>&quot;All these chores involve an increase in heart rate and aerobic activity with the added benefit of being in the fresh air and outside of a gym environment,&quot; adds Driver. They can all be done as an alternative to the gym, and you could even time yourself!&quot;</p> <h2>4. Dog walking</h2> <p>If you want to keep things moving but not overexert yourself, dog walking may be the gig for you. It's easier than ever to pick up this side hustle that allows you to trot somebody else's pup around the neighborhood while getting paid for it. I offer my services on Rover.com (probably the most popular peer-to-peer pet service out there), which is primarily a dog-sitting service, but there is a walking component to it. Dog agility training</h2> <p>Plenty of dog moms and dads send their pups away to be professionally trained, but now there are programs available, like Thank Dog! Bootcamp, that offers integrated human and canine personal fitness so you and your pooch can get physically and mentally fit together. This particular program is only available in Tennessee and Ohio at the moment, but you may be able to find something similar in your area with a quick online search. Cat hiking</h2> <p>Mallory Crusta is the owner of Wildernesscat Natural Pet Care, a site dedicated to &quot;providing natural health solutions for adventurous cats.&quot; She's also a supporter of &quot;adventure cats,&quot; a social media-fueled phenomenon that has cats stepping outside of the home and exploring the great outdoors. While kayaking, sailing, camping, and even skiing with cats are all activities growing in popularity, hiking is one with real potential for improving your fitness.</p> <p>&quot;Of course, it's crucial that your cat is comfortable with a leash and harness long before you start exploring the local state park,&quot; Crusta adds. &quot;Take a few test walks, first through your house, then in the backyard, to gradually acclimate your cat to the experience. It's also critical that your hiking cat is trained to come when called. Treats are often the key to training: use them to teach your cat to follow you.&quot;</p> <h2>7. Weightlifting for livestock</h2> <p>I have friends who raise chickens on their property and they can attest to the strength-training they receive by hauling around feed bags and maintaining the coops. &quot;The Critter Lady&quot; Kelly Meister-Yetter also told me about her three flightless domestic ducks living in her backyard, and just about every facet of their care involves weightlifting.</p> <p>&quot;Their bags of feed weigh 50 lbs, and the bales of straw I use in their pen weigh over 20 lbs &mdash; all of which must be moved from the back of my car to the shed in the backyard,&quot; she says.</p> <h2>8. Birding</h2> <p>Novice and veteran ornithologists (and just regular Joes who like watching birds) will reap the benefits of birding through improved cardiovascular health. Bird watchers sometimes walk many miles in search of their flighty subjects. The practice of yoga has become popular enough that most people know how yoga is done and how to do the basic poses.</p> <p>What you may not know is that you can learn a lot about life in general while holding a pose like downward dog or happy baby. When you practice, you study not only the yogic postures, but also things like balance, flexibility, and mindfulness. And you can apply all of these concepts outside of the studio, too.</p> <p>Here's how I've come to apply things I've learned from yoga to my personal financial life. I hope these ideas help you think about your money a little differently, maybe with a little more Zen! Balance Is Central</h2> <p>My favorite yoga teacher will tell us to center ourselves not just over the left foot, but over the toes, or the heel. Slowly, I've come to realize that how I balance myself changes the posture subtly, often bringing in more of a stretch or making it more challenging.</p> <p>Just as how you balance is key in the yoga studio, it's helpful when you're thinking about money, too. Most of us want more money, but what if we were to focus somewhere else? For instance, is there enough to pay the bills? Are we spending more thoughtfully than we did last year? And what would making more money actually add to our lives?</p> <p>These questions, and more, can help us think in a more balanced way about our money. This, in turn, will free us to change spending or saving habits that might be harming us.</p> <h2>2. Proper Preparation Is Key</h2> <p>A good yoga teacher will prepare you for what is coming, both in the current class and in the future. There's a reason that harder poses often come near the end of a yoga class &mdash; it's because you wouldn't be ready for them before that. You have to open your hips, your hamstrings, your shoulders, and whatever else is needed for that final, challenging pose of the flow. If you don't prepare, you'll hurt yourself and hamper your ability to progress in the long term.</p> <p>Money works the same way. What are your long-term financial goals? And your short-term goals? These aren't just going to happen. They require planning and preparation ahead of time. Just like in yoga, you need to do specific things now so you can reach your goals later. Want to travel around the world? Start saving. Need a specific kind of of mortgage, come spring? Look at starting the application now. Proper planning will help ensure your long-term financial health, just like a proper flow will help ensure that you stay healthy enough to continue practicing yoga.</p> <h2>3. Flexibility Is Crucial</h2> <p>Most people who practice regularly see an increase in their flexibility. And people like me &mdash; who just thought they weren't flexible at all &mdash; begin to see how this rise in flexibility influences their entire lives.</p> <p>Similarly, the more flexible you can be with your money, the better prepared you'll be financially. Financial flexibility has to do with your ability to change how you spend based on your current circumstances. If you empty your emergency fund because your car breaks down, can you flex for a few months until the fund is replenished? And if you realize you need more than you'd anticipated for a down payment, can you find the funds and flex on a few things until you've made up the difference?</p> <p>Financial flexibility pertains to small things, like how much coffee you buy and how often you dine out. But it also pertains to bigger things, like when you decide to buy a house, how you structure your investments, and more. Just as flexibility and strength are tied in yoga, they often come together financially, too. And you want your money to be as strong as it can be.</p> <h2>4. Self-Care Is Always Worth It</h2> <p>People start yoga for all different sorts of reasons, but they often continue because of self-care. Doing yoga feels good. It makes your body feel better, even alleviating long-term aches and pains. And it's often meditative, offering quiet and space that most of us don't have in our daily lives. So, in learning yoga, we often stumble onto self-care, too.</p> <p>Learning self-care through yoga often helps people take better care of themselves financially. This can mean spending money on things &mdash; even little things &mdash; that make you feel good. A sweet smelling candle, a good book, or a cup of coffee can all be acts of self-care. It can also mean using more discretion about how you spend your money, so that you aren't always worrying about debt, overdraft fees, and how to pay the bills. Once people get started on a path to self-care, it often spills into their entire lives.</p> <h2>5. Mindfulness Will Help You Reach Your Goals</h2> <p>Mindfulness means staying aware in the present, and is often stressed in the yoga studio. Living in the now, paying attention to how your body is moving, what you need to do, and how to stay in a pose, can all help you learn to remain present &mdash; even when so many things pressure you to think about them, instead.</p> <p>More than anything else, mindfulness is a path to self-mastery. It teaches us to choose where we focus, rather than letting the mind run willy nilly wherever it wants. And when we learn to focus in yoga, we learn a skill that can help us financially, too.</p> <p>Being mindful &mdash; and therefore a master of ourselves &mdash; can help us stick to a budget. It can help us save up for something we really want. It can help us get through a frugal season without taking on debt. And it can even help us buy Christmas presents, because it will help us focus on the recipient and what they want, rather on everything we might like to buy for them. In the end, being mindful will help us save more, invest better, and be happier with what we have.</p> <p>When we are open, willing learners, yoga can improve not only our physical health, but our financial health as well.</p> <p><em>How does your yoga practice tie to your financial life?
