Just the mention of the continent can conjure up images of unstable political landscapes, and high levels of crime and violence. But while there are some parts of South America that are blighted by problems of this nature, the vast majority is perfectly safe to visit.

Make sure you follow basic travel safety measures like not wearing flashy clothes or jewelry, only carrying small amounts of cash on you, and avoiding secluded and poorly lit areas at night. And as with any destination, it always pays to take sensible precautions, research your destination, and make plans based on this information. (See also: 4 Affordable Destinations That Are Safer Than You Think)

Here are six South American destinations that are safe to visit.

1. Buenos Aires, Argentina

Sometimes referred to as the Paris of South America, you'll immediately notice that there's a distinctly European vibe to Buenos Aires. The outdoor cafes, and Italian-, German-, and Spanish-influenced cuisine all offer a nod to the city's history of European settlers.

Learn to tango in the home of the famous sensual dance, sample the delicious wine that the country has earned a burgeoning reputation for, and don't miss out on asado (barbecue) at one of the bustling parrilla eateries. Restaurants here frequently don't even open until 11 p.m. and clubs stay open until the sun comes up. This is a city that simply does not sleep.

Argentina has no travel warnings currently issued by the Department of State.

2. Medellin, Colombia

Formerly, Colombia was the battleground for some of the most violent and feared drugs lords the world has ever seen, including the likes of Pablo Escobar. However, Medellin has worked hard to clean up its reputation in recent years, with dramatic effects clearly evident.

Colombia's third largest city has won numerous awards over the past decade in recognition of its innovations in contemporary urban design. It's one of the trendiest vacation destinations in South America, with visitors arriving to check out the "City of Eternal Spring," thanks to its year-round moderate temperature.

While Colombia has a level two travel advisory, Medellin is not mentioned as somewhere to be wary of. (See also: 8 Travel Warnings You Shouldn't Ignore)

3. Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

Uruguay is often overshadowed by its larger and more popular neighbors, and is often seen as a day trip by visitors to Argentina. But it has its very own laid-back charm that's well worth exploring, and Colonia del Sacramento is the ideal place to start.

This sleepy city is really one for fans of the quiet life, with its historical architecture, cobblestone streets, and small town feel. The perfectly preserved historic quarter is by far the biggest draw, with its mixture of Spanish and Portuguese colonial buildings making for a picturesque destination.

Crime is extremely rare here and travel advisory levels are currently at their lowest, with no warnings whatsoever. (See also: 7 Common Travel Myths That People Need to Stop Believing)

4. Santiago, Chile

Chile's capital and largest city is a contemporary, cosmopolitan, and classy metropolis. The central zone sprawls out from the vast Palacio de la Moneda, with many of the streets completely pedestrianized. In districts like Providencia, you'll find refined restaurants and high class hotels.

The fact that Santiago sits in a valley surrounded by mountains and hills means it offers plenty of opportunities to escape the city center. This diversity allows you to head out into the elevated, leafy parks and vantage points that offer spectacular views of the city.

Chile has no travel warnings and a level one safety advisory.

5. Florianopolis, Brazil

Far removed from the madness of megacities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, lies the lesser known city of Florianópolis. The majority of the city lies on an island just off Brazil's Atlantic Coast, but remains connected by two bridges. "Floripa," as it's known locally, is a laid back, artsy, surfer haven that's long been a popular vacation destinations for Brazilians in the know.

The energetic city center is packed full of international restaurants, trendy coffee shops, and lively bars. Comprising landscapes as diverse as luscious white sand beaches, areas of rich forests, lagoons, and waterfalls, Floripa is also a natural wonderland that allows you to escape the city at leisure.

While some parts of Brazil have relatively high crime rates, these are mainly concentrated in specific areas and the travel advisory levels currently stand at two, with no specific mention of Florianópolis. (See also: 7 Ways to Manage Your Travel Anxiety)

6. Copacabana, Bolivia

One of the largest lakes in the whole of the South American continent, the inimitable Titicaca is so big it straddles the borders of both Bolivia and Peru. Unusually for a lake of this size, it's also at great altitude, lying in excess of 12,500 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountain range. There are many villages and towns on the shores of the lake, but probably the most popular is the Bolivian town of Copacabana.

In truth, the town itself isn't much to behold, but everything here centers around the lake. It is an imposing body of water, stretching out as far as the eye can see. You can hike the surrounding hillsides for incredible views, head to the indigenous village on the Isla del Sol to experience the local culture, and learn about ancient Inca traditions.

Bolivia has a travel advisory level of one and Copacabana and is generally considered extremely safe.

Like this article? The site analyzes available data from different sources — mostly statistics from the U.S. Census and figures released through the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program. It also takes into account the results of over 100 million survey responses and reviews based on people's own perceptions of how safe they feel within their own city. After interpreting all of this data, it then creates a ranked listing of the safest cities in the U.S.

1. One of the main reasons is that tourist hubs like Playa Del Carmen and Cancun have largely been protected from the worst of the unrest.

Recently, this has started to change and there have been gruesome and shocking incidents occurring in areas once thought unaffected. A bomb recently detonated on a passenger ferry from Playa Del Carmen that injured over 20 people. Cancun has seen various incidents of gun violence, including multiple murders on its white sand beaches and even a gunman firing at the beach from a jet ski. Another popular tourist area, Los Cabos in Baja California, has also felt the effects after a spate of grisly murders over the past year.

Despite the fact that it does have a serious crime problem, with more than 29,000 murders in 2017, Mexico is still generally very safe for visitors. There are other amazing destinations throughout Mexico that have not been hit by the same problems, and would make an excellent choice for a vacation. Here are five destinations in Mexico that are safer than Playa Del Carmen and Cancun at the moment. (See also: 8 Most Affordable Beach Towns in Mexico)

1. Guanajuato

The picturesque city of Guanajuato, which lies right in the center of Mexico, is still famed for its silver production in particular. At one point during the 18th century, it was one of the biggest producers of silver in the world, which meant it was flooded with wealth. This is clearly visible in the colonial mansions and ornate churches that you'll come across when wandering the narrow streets, many of which are so tight that cars can't navigate them.

The city meanders its way right up into the surrounding mountains, which are dotted with a mish mash of vibrantly colored buildings. Among them you'll discover museums, theaters, plazas surrounded by outdoor cafes, and various interesting marketplaces. The atmosphere in Guanajuato is laid back, making it the perfect relaxing city break with a cultural leaning.

2. San Cristóbal de las Casas

Tucked away in the mountains of Chiapas in southern Mexico, San Cristóbal is relatively cold due to the altitude, and far away from either coast, so you won't be getting any beach time. However, what San Cristóbal does have in abundance is character, culture, and colorful colonial architecture, which combined with its rich history, make it one of the most fascinating towns in the country.

The local population here has a uniquely high proportion of indigenous people from two main groups, the Tzotzil and the Tzelta. In the center, pastel colored buildings with red tile roofs line narrow cobbled streets, making it a picturesque place to explore. The mix of traditional and modern provides an interesting dynamic, with lively markets and street sellers offering handmade crafts. Those sit alongside bustling contemporary bars, cafes, and restaurants.

3. Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico and has a sizable expat population, thanks to its modern amenities, lovely beaches, and a lively night life. But despite the similarities it shares with the likes of Cancun and Playa Del Carmen, it's actually got a completely different feel to it. There are two faces to Puerto Vallarta, the old and the new, with one boasting vast resorts and visitor-oriented attractions, the other filled with cobbled streets and the feel of a long-established Puebla.

A wide and busy boardwalk runs from the heart of the old "Romantic Zone" along the seafront out toward the newer part of the city. Along its edges you'll find restaurants, bars, and shops selling everything from craft tequilas to souvenirs usually found in popular beach towns. Oaxaca City

Oaxaca City is currently enjoying something of a moment, having been billed by those in the know as Mexico's culinary epicenter. Regional delicacies hailing from this part of the country include the complicated and rich mole sauce; Tlayudas, which has been likened to a Mexican version of pizza; and chapulines (aka grasshoppers), which are widely used in various dishes. But there's more to Oaxaca than top notch noshes.

The entire historic center of Oaxaca city has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to the historic monuments found within its meticulously planned boundaries. Despite the historic buildings, it's a modern city with cool cafes, trendy bars, and boutique hotels belying their antiquated facades. There are colorful markets filled with locally crafted goods, smoky food halls serving up delicious treats, and numerous festivals throughout the year during which the city explodes into colorful parties. Tulum

This laid-back former hippy haven on the Yucatán Peninsula is actually in Quintana Roo, the same state where both Playa Del Carmen and Cancun are located. However, it couldn't be more different. It's a beach town that isn't actually located on the edge of the coast, and lies a couple of miles inland with a large, green national park separating the two.

The wide beaches nearby are fringed with boutique hotels, spa retreats, and easy going restaurants, so you can comfortably spend the day without heading into town. There are also some extremely well-preserved Mayan ruins inside the national park that provide spectacular views of the sea. The town itself is centered around a single main road that’s populated by traditional restaurants and bars.

A bit further out, there are also spectacular cenotes, natural sinkholes formed when limestone bedrock collapses, exposing the ground water beneath. They’re a little slice of Eden. Gran Cenote is the most impressive, with turtles and colorful fish surrounding you as you snorkel. You're not alone.

Seeing the world sounds glamorous, but fear and anxiety can put a major damper on your travel plans. In fact, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, over 31 percent of adults in the U.S. experience anxiety disorders at some point in their lifetime. Traveling forces you to leave the comforts of home and your daily routines and exposes you to many new situations, which can trigger anxiety.

But traveling can also be good for your mind, body, and soul, and though it won't cure your anxiety, there are many ways to prevent your anxiety from ruining your travel goals. (See also: 7 Common Travel Myths That People Need to Stop Believing)

1. Do your homework

Research is key to lessening your travel fears. The more you can learn about a place before you go, the more comfortable you'll feel once you arrive.

Before you depart, check out the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs for information regarding your destination. They outline exactly what you need in order to enter each country and any travel advisories that are currently in effect. Further, they provide detailed instructions in the event of an emergency while abroad. While no one likes to plan for emergencies, they can happen. Ease some of your concerns by preparing yourself in advance.

Continue your research by checking out travel guides from your local library. These books, such as travel guides by Rick Steves (American author and travel expert), provide up-to-date travel information. In fact, many books will tell you which sites to see and what to avoid. And make sure you check out some travel blogs, as travel bloggers outline their trips in great detail, which can be helpful while you plan your own vacation. (See also: 5 of the Safest Countries to Visit in 2018)

2. Arm yourself with helpful apps

Nothing is worse than feeling unprepared in an unfamiliar place. For instance, maybe a local asks you a question in a different language, and you aren't sure how to respond. You can prepare yourself by bringing a pocket-size dictionary, or download a free language translator app that you can refer to in a pinch. You can also download a currency exchange app to help you when you need to make a purchase. (See also: 7 Apps for the Tech-Challenged Traveler)

3. Create a detailed plan

Traveling without a plan is anxiety inducing for many. Without a detailed plan, you have to figure out what to do with your time while you're there, and that can become stressful. To ease concerns, create a detailed outline of your trip. Include your itinerary for each day, where you will be staying, phone numbers and addresses of locations, and what time you plan to arrive back home.

By outlining the details, you can anticipate exactly what you will be doing on any given day. You essentially remove most of the big unknowns and hopefully lessen your fears.

4. Be aware of crime

Try not to focus on preventing every bad thing from happening, because ultimately, that's impossible. Instead, take time to prepare yourself in the event that something unfavorable does take place.

Minor crimes against tourists include stolen money or lost luggage. Both of these events can leave you penniless if you aren't prepared. Don't keep cash in easily packable pockets. Never put all of your travel cash in one place. Avoid going to the ATM late at night. And have a list of emergency numbers you can call in case you need help. (See also: How to Avoid Theft While Traveling)

5. Establish a routine

Routines can create a sense of control, which, for people who struggle with anxiety, can also provide comfort. While it's harder to maintain your regular routine while on the road, it is possible. Set your alarm for the same time each morning. Take time to read the newspaper, drink coffee, and whatever other morning activities you regularly do. By keeping the small things constant, you can continue to feel like you are in control, even if you are somewhere completely new.

6. Prepare for the flight

Transportation, whether driving or flying, can be stressful on its own. Many times, people dislike this part of travel because they feel like they are not in control. Talk to your travel companions about your fear. While they won't be able to necessarily lessen your fear, their support can help you feel more at ease.

Make yourself as comfortable as possible by packing plenty of books, work, or entertainment to keep you occupied while traveling. (See also: 21 Unexpected Items You Should Always Pack in Your Carry-On)

You may also want to discuss your anxiety with your doctor. They can work with you to establish a plan to counter your anxiety and put you on medication if needed.

7. Remind yourself why you are traveling

What experiences are you hoping to gain? What sites are you dying to see? What is prompting you to leave your comfort zone? Take time to really consider why you are traveling and why it's important to you. Documenting your thoughts in a travel journal or blog cannot only help you process your emotions, but it serves as a reminder of why you chose to step out of your bubble and see the world. While some issues are unavoidable (the hotel room isn't ready, the rental car breaks down, someone gets sick), there are others that can be avoided if you pay close attention to travel advisories. These warnings are given days, or even weeks, in advance, and can save you time, money, and in extreme cases, can even mean life or death.

1. Extreme weather

Weather is one of the easiest vacation issues to predict. Advances in meteorological science mean that weather experts can predict major problems with a reliable degree of accuracy. That means hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, torrential rain, extreme heat, blizzards, and even dangerous hail are literally on the radar for meteorologists.

If they warn you of these weather conditions before you are set to travel anywhere, rethink your plans. Extreme weather shifts like this can ground planes, cause car crashes, wipe out roads and buildings, and lead to serious injury and death. Don't mess with mother nature; you'll lose. (See also: 7 Times Travel Insurance Is Worth It)

2. Civil unrest and political upheaval

Most of us are fortunate enough to live in a land of (relative) peace. It's easy to forget that in some parts of the world, citizens are in a fight for justice, and their lives, on a daily basis. If you are not up on the latest news from around the world, you could be in for a rude awakening when you get to your destination. For example, the U.S. government is currently advising you to reconsider travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Venezuela, and Sudan, among others, due primarily to crime and civil unrest in these regions.

If you must travel to these areas, perhaps for work or a family emergency, you should exercise extreme caution and take the necessary steps to stay safe when you arrive. Consider a local trusted guide or escort who can advise you on where to go and, more importantly, where to avoid. (See also: 5 of the Safest Countries to Visit in 2018)

3. Health and disease

While modern medicine safeguards us and helps us recover from all kinds of communicable diseases, you cannot take any risks when traveling abroad. That's why you should always check with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) before taking any kind of trip.

Current notices at the time of this writing include an outbreak of malaria and listeriosis in South Africa, and malaria and yellow fever in Brazil. And since June of 2017, over 2,000 cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) have been identified in multiple countries in the Arabian Peninsula. You can get additional vaccines before you travel, or if you are really concerned, change your plans to a different location. (See also: 7 Ways to Avoid Getting Seriously Sick on Vacation)

4. Terrorism

Since September 11, 2001, terror attacks have increased substantially in some parts of the world. The State Department currently has Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Mali, North Korea, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen on the Do Not Travel list, primarily due to incidents of terrorism.

Many other countries get a Reconsider Travel notice for terrorism dangers, including Pakistan, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Lebanon. These terrorism warnings are constantly updated, so if you know you may be traveling to a part of the world that has been home to terrorist activity, check the list and consider your alternatives.

5. Crime and personal safety

While the two often go hand in hand, there are some distinctions to be made here. For example, many countries have a crime rate far in excess of anything you've experienced in the United States, and as such, you will not be prepared for the dangers without first researching the area. El Salvador, Burundi, Guatemala, Nigeria, and Mauritania are all flagged right now for problems with crime. Take the following precautions in places known to have a high crime rate:

Consider hotels that offer secure parking, doormen, and a dedicated and professional security staff.

Request security escorts, available for tourist groups.

Be aware of your surroundings.

Avoid walking or driving at night.

Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.

Do not use public ATMs.

Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry.

While crime can certainly result in physical danger, there is another kind of personal safety issue you need to be aware of. It's known as "risk of arrest and detention," and happens in places that have a volatile relationship with the U.S. North Korea is a prime example, and if you do not have special validation from the Department of State to travel in, or through, North Korea, you may find yourself in deep trouble.

6. Airline issues

Perhaps one of the most obvious, but often overlooked, travel warnings come from the airlines themselves. When we think of a travel advisory, we think of weather issues, health and disease, crime, and civil unrest. But one surefire way that your vacation can come to a grinding halt is when the airline has an issue. Anything from a computer system going down, to problems with labor negotiations and strikes, or mechanical malfunctions and serious delays, can put a serious dent in your plans.

Every airline has its own alert page, so if you know which airline you plan on taking, check out that alert page regularly.

7. War

We live in turbulent political times. While some wars have been raging for decades, others could break out at the drop of a hat. If you're not following politics closely, you should take notice if the region you are traveling to is about to go to war (or is actually at war and you didn't even know it). The most infamous places right now are Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Darfur, Myanmar, Nigeria, Libya, Sudan, Yemen, and the Central African Republic.

Other danger zones closer to home are some regions of Mexico. Since 2006, the Mexican drug war has had over 106,000 casualties, with almost 15,000 of those coming in 2017 alone. The Mexican states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, and Tamaulipas are all currently on the Do Not Travel list due to crime. (See also: 4 Affordable Destinations That Are Safer Than You Think)

8. Geological disasters

This is a broad term, because you could easily put extreme weather into this category. But in this instance, it's reserved for natural disasters. For example, when Iceland's volcano Eyjafjallajökull blew in 2010, massive clouds of ash made travel impossible for millions of people. An earthquake warning, or the threat of a volcanic eruption or a landslide, should be taken very seriously. Violence, wars, terrorism, and drugs can all destroy a country's image and leave lasting negative consequences for its tourism industry.

But if you're looking for a budget vacation that's a little out of the ordinary, then consider exploring countries that for one reason or another haven't always enjoyed the best of reputations. Here are four affordable destinations that are actually less dangerous than you might think. (See also: 5 of the Safest Countries to Visit in 2018)

*All cost estimates are taken from Numbeo.com, a trusted source of user contributed data for the cost of living in countries, and leading hotel site Booking.com.

Rwanda

Rwanda's recent history has been deeply shaped by the brutal civil war that was waged here in the early 1990s, and in so many ways it's still struggling to overcome the devastating aftermath. Up to a million people are estimated to have been killed during the unrest and the genocide that followed. Though this war ended over 20 years ago, for many it's still the first thing that springs to mind when Rwanda is mentioned, deterring some potential visitors.

Today, the landscape in Rwanda is very different, and though the scars remain, it's beginning to build a reputation as one of the continent's finest tourist destinations. It's now widely regarded as one of the safest and most politically stable countries in Africa. At the time of publishing, the U.S. State Department rates it as having the lowest possible travel advisory level, with no current security alerts.

Despite its diminutive size, it packs a punch far above its weight in terms of attractions. Known as "The Land of a Thousand Hills," its undulating terrain is home to some incredible scenery and rare animals. This includes the famous National Volcanoes Park where you'll find some of the world's last remaining mountain gorillas.

Rwanda is also rated as one of the most affordable countries to visit in the region. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant will set you back just $2.88, and a room in a budget hotel will start at around $30 depending on which area you're in.

Morocco

North Africa has developed a less than stellar reputation in recent years having been blighted by numerous acts of horrific terrorism. Morocco has also experienced terrorist-related incidents in the past, and it should be pointed out that the U.S. State Department says that "the potential for terrorist violence against U.S. interests and citizens exists."

However, the State Department’s travel advisory level for Morocco is currently at level 1, the lowest possible level, and there have not been any terrorist attacks in Morocco since 2011. It's widely considered one of the safest countries in the region and its continued high levels of tourism bear testament to this.

Exquisite architecture intricately decorated with tiled mosaics, bustling marketplaces full of vibrantly colored spices and fabrics, and swathes of sand dunes stretching out for miles on end are just some of the reasons to visit Morocco. The cuisine is also a huge draw, with richly spiced dishes mixing sweet and savory to mouth watering effect.

Thanks in part to the large numbers of tourists it receives, Morocco is one of the most reasonably priced countries in the region. Budget rooms are available starting at around $30 and a meal at an inexpensive restaurant will cost a little more than $3.

Colombia

The shadow cast by drug kingpins like the notorious Pablo Escobar still lingers over Colombia, and these associations have proved difficult for the South American country to eliminate. Potential visitors still sometimes fear accidentally getting caught up in the drug trade, being kidnapped by guerrilla fighters, and becoming the victim of organized gang violence. This hasn't been helped by the recent release of popular movies and TV series on the subject.

While these fears would have been well founded in the '80s and '90s, Colombia has worked hard to free itself from the clutches of organized crime. In the process, it's begun reinventing itself as a favored tourist destination for travelers wanting a taste of this previously unexplored South American country.

Colombia has an attractive mixture of cutting edge modernity and a diverse range of breathtaking, untouched landscapes. This is showcased in cities like Medellin, whose stunning scenery includes swathes of lush jungle and a Caribbean coastline filled with pristine beaches.

Colombia is also one of the most affordable countries in South America. That’s one reason it's currently enjoying a wave of popularity among young backpackers. Even in the bigger cities, budget rooms are available for less than $25 per night and a meal at an inexpensive restaurant will cost less than $4.

Jordan

The Middle East is widely regarded as a no-go zone by many people who view the entire region as dangerous. This opinion is fueled by the political instability and well-publicized conflicts that are still ongoing in countries like Syria, Iraq, and Palestine. Because of this, the Middle East in general is not considered your typical vacation destination, and there's a lot of fear around visiting.

The tiny country of Jordan, however, is trying its hardest to buck the trend and has become something of an "it" destination in recent years. Though there are safety warnings for the areas close to the borders it shares with some of its neighboring countries, it's stable politically and generally safe to visit.

The main reason that people come to Jordan is to visit the famous archaeological wonder and UNESCO World Heritage site, Petra. This ancient city is made up of buildings that were meticulously carved into the red sandstone rock face over 2,000 years ago, when it was the epicenter of a vast empire.

But that's not all there is to Jordan. Modern cities like Amman and exciting adventure activities available make it a diverse location. An inexpensive meal will cost around $7.

Like this article? Organizing flights, accommodations, packing, getting to the airport, and making sure everything at home is sorted for while you're away can easily frazzle the nerves. Because of this, the last thing you want to have on your mind is whether or not your destination is a safe place to visit.

What constitutes a safe country is clearly a contentious and subjective question, and there's no definitive way to determine it. Different countries have their own methods to measure crime, and of course, threat levels are constantly changing. Currently, there are 45 countries that the U.S. Department of State has issued travel warnings for and there's even a Worldwide Caution in place.

The good news is that by many measures, the U.S. actually ranks quite poorly, meaning that by leaving the country, you're likely to be heading somewhere already considered safer. However, choosing a destination that's considered "safe" can still be tricky. Here are five of the safest countries to travel to in 2018, based on current crime rates and existing security alerts.

*All statistics are taken from the U.S. Department of State and the Institute for Economics and Peace's 2017 Global Peace Index report's Societal Safety And Security Domain section.

1. Iceland

Iceland's popularity has skyrocketed over the past decade with visitor levels rising from around 422,000 annually in 2006 to over 1.7 million in 2016. This is thanks largely to a concerted effort by tourism authorities to increase visitor numbers, as well as Icelandic airlines offering affordable transatlantic stopover options. As a result, the gorgeous landscapes, giant volcanoes, natural hot springs, spurting geysers, and vast glaciers, plus the likelihood of witnessing the magical Northern Lights have made Iceland extremely popular.

Iceland is also one of the safest countries on earth, coming in at the number one spot on the Global Peace Index, as it has done continuously since 2008. It has extremely low crime rates, and has no current alerts or warnings issued by the Department of State. The Overseas Security Advisory Council report 2017 report for Iceland states "crime continues to be lower than in most developed countries and countries of similar size and demographics." (See also: How to Wisely Choose Your Next Travel Destination)

2. Sweden

This stunning Scandinavian country nestled in between Norway and Finland celebrates the outdoors in a big way. Its vast natural landscapes are decorated with huge lakes, fast-flowing rivers, and gigantic glaciers, as well as forests, sandy beaches, and hundreds of coastal islets. The country's wide reaching Freedom to Roam laws mean that every citizen has the opportunity to take full advantage of them. It also has a number of charming, colorful cities packed with culture and history such as Stockholm, Malmo, and Gothenburg.

Sweden is rated fifth on the Global Peace Index table, making it one of the safest countries to visit. Though it has extremely low levels of crime, OSAC's 2017 Sweden report claims that the national averages are bolstered by low rates outside of the urban areas. It does, however, concede that, "The general crime rate in Sweden is below the U.S. national average," and there are no Department of State warnings at this current time.

3. New Zealand

Spread across two main land masses known as the North and the South islands, New Zealand, and more specifically Queenstown, is often referred to as the "adventure capital of the world." It's where the first commercial bungee jump was born, is a popular site for paragliding, sky diving, and hang gliding, and you can also enjoy extreme water sports like jet boating. But it's not all pulse-raising activities; New Zealand is also considered a place to escape into nature and enjoy the widespread wildlife.

This country of two halves lands at number two on the Global Peace Index report as the first of only two countries outside Europe to appear in the top 10. There are no Department of State warnings on New Zealand and the OSAC 2017 New Zealand report says, "In general, crime is less prevalent in New Zealand than in major cities in the U.S."

4. Japan

Made up of hundreds of volcanic islands, Japan is well known for its diverse natural landscapes and its modern cities. Deeply rooted, centuries-old tradition sits seamlessly alongside contemporary cutting edge technology, and this unique combination of ancient and current can be seen in everything from the culinary scene to the architecture. Futuristic robot shows are as popular as wilderness hikes in national parks, and up-to-the-minute technology is as revered as the many temples and shrines.

As the other non-European entrant on the Global Peace Index, Japan appears at number 10 on the list. For a country of its size and stature, the crime rates are remarkably low, particularly for murder and gun crime, which some reports suggest has been virtually eradicated. With no travel alerts or warnings, it's certainly one of the safest options for 2018.

5. Portugal

Located in the southeast corner of Europe, Portugal has long been a popular tourist destination, thanks to its warm climate and diverse culture. In its role as one of the most prominent sea faring nations, Portugal built up a vast global empire. Historic cities, bountiful beaches, and fine food and wine are what attract the majority of visitors to this fascinating country.

Coming in at number three on the Global Peace Index, Portugal "has a relatively low rate of violent crime" and "is a generally safe country" according to the 2017 OSAC Portugal Report. It's worth noting, however, that petty thefts and muggings are said to be higher in tourist areas around peak times. They also happen to be a cheap way to eat well. It pays to be cautious, but there's no need to miss out on street food altogether if you follow a few basic rules. One way to do this is to observe the areas that serve street food and make a mental note of when they get busy. You can also ask a local resident for the inside scoop. Once you're armed with the local mealtimes, stick to them rigidly and make sure that the stall you choose is bustling before you start to order.

If you arrive before or after peak times, you won't know how long the food ingredients have been sitting around. You want a stall with a high turnover, constantly refreshing their ingredients and swapping out utensils and containers. When it comes to street food, it's always best to follow the crowd.

Look closely at the queue

In almost every other aspect of life, queues are looked at as a tedious and unnecessary waste of time. But if there is not a line of people waiting to order at the stall and you've followed the point above, then you should be questioning why.

Put simply, queues mean quality, because people don't stand in line unless they know they're going to get something that's worth waiting for. Consider queues your best friend. They don't just mean that the food will be tasty, but they virtually guarantee that it will be fresh and safe to eat.

In areas where competition for street food vendors is high, this applies even more so. Quite often, street food stalls that sell exactly the same dishes will group together in one place. Though it seems counterintuitive, the economies of agglomeration mean that it's actually beneficial for vendors to do this, as a higher volume of similar stalls attracts a higher number of buyers. Don't go rogue and be the person that chooses to save time by heading to the place with no queue. Watching chefs elaborately toss ingredients in the air with their wok, or chop fresh produce at lightning speed can be as entertaining an experience as eating the food itself. But more important than the open air performance is the fact that watching the preparation means you can plainly see how hygienic their methods are.

Take a look at the preparation surfaces that are in use: Are they clean as a whistle or covered in flies? Does the stall owner look like they have decent standards of personal hygiene? Where is the raw food being kept? Is it out in the sun or carefully packed away in a cooler or refrigerator? Watch closely for a few minutes before you make your choice, and if you're not happy with how the food is being prepared, move on. (See also: 14 Best Ways to Cut Food Costs While Traveling)

If it doesn't taste right, don't continue

When it comes to food, using the sniff and poke test to determine whether something is safe to eat is not a good idea. Just because it smells fine, that doesn't necessarily mean it's not going to be harmful. Food could appear on the surface to be perfectly fine and still be riddled with illness-causing bacteria. That said, if a dish smells or tastes terrible, then you should definitely err on the side of caution and take it as a sign that something is potentially off or rotten.

A solid rule of thumb to follow is that if it doesn't seem right, then just don't continue eating it. There's no need to be rude, but you should let the cooks know that something doesn't seem quite right, so they don't pass on contaminated food to other customers. You may have paid for it already, but it's really not worth the risk. You should, quite literally, go with your gut in this instance.

Eat cooked food or peelable food

If it's not cooked, or not peelable, then don't let it pass your lips. In many countries, there are delicacies that are made from raw eggs, raw vegetables, and even raw meat. Though they may be lovely and perfectly safe for those who are used to eating them, don't play Russian roulette with your digestive system. If you are desperate to try one of these dishes, then it's far better to go to a restaurant that you have reference-checked thoroughly beforehand than to take a gamble on the street.

Always be sure to check that food is piping hot throughout, as partial heating is a surefire way to encourage bacterial growth. You can always ask for something to be cooked longer if you're unsure. When it comes to fruit, stick to the stuff that's peelable. A removable skin is nature's promise of sterility within.

What to do if the worst does happen

If you do end up getting sick, the first and most important thing to do is remain hydrated by drinking lots of water, because it's essential to replace any fluids you lose when you're sick. Get lots of rest, as it will help your body recover quickly. Remember, most bouts of food poisoning won't last longer than three days. It's not usually necessary to take any medication for sickness or diarrhea and it will ordinarily just run its course naturally.

If your symptoms are severe, or they haven't improved after three days, then you should get in touch with a medical professional to seek further help.

Like this article? This Travel and Money series discusses various ways to address money and security issues while you are abroad.

Today we’ll address getting and carrying cash safely and securely while you’re actively traveling on the road. Depending on where you go, it’s easy to be labeled as a tourist, which automatically makes you a target for theft and robbery. And in some countries, pick-pocketing is a finely attuned art form. In other places, full-on muggings are common occurrences. So it pays to be judicious about how you carry your cash so you aren’t left stranded.

Where to Get Cash

You have a few options for where to get your cash if you are in a country with a different currency:

You can convert funds at your home bank and bring foreign currency abroad with you. If the currency conversion rates are fairly stable or at a particularly favorable rate before you leave, this could be a good plan. But think hard about how much cash you want to convert and carry at the onset; if you covert all your spending money right away and carry it with you throughout your trip, you have no recourse if the cash is lost or stolen.

You could carry home currency and convert it periodically while abroad. However again you leave yourself at the risk of loss or theft of all your coffers.

Lastly is my preferred method, which is to use ATMs abroad. You may be subject to a few different fees, but they’re not exorbitant and are often comparable to what you would pay to exchange money along the way. You also have the added protection of not having to carry all your cash with you all the time. For some tips on how to manage fees and make effective cash withdrawals, check out this article on using your debit card on the road.

Cash Conversion Tips

If you bring cash from home and plan to convert it along the way (or if you are visiting multiple countries and need to convert as you cross borders), take heed of the following tips:

Don’t convert your cash at the airport. The currency exchange booths have clued in to how easy it is for us lazy tourists to simply convert our funds at the airport (or other transportation hub), so they jack up the conversion rates and commission fees. Instead, wait until you get into town and find a bank or exchange booth there. If you need money right away (to pay for an airport bus for example), consider using an ATM instead (see tips above), or charging the expense to your credit card.

Beware of friendly locals offering to exchange money for you. There’s a reason they’re offering up this service, and it isn’t sheer benevolence. Even if it’s not a full-on scam, they’re getting something for playing the middle-man, and it’s coming out of your pocket.

How to Carry Your Cash Securely: Diversify!

Carrying all your cash in one place (usually a wallet) puts you at the biggest risk of losing the whole enchilada if somebody lifts (or if you lose) your wallet. In addition, when you whip out your wallet to pay for something and are sifting through large amounts of money, you will immediately become a formidable target for theft.

So carry your cash in a few different places. Put the day’s spending money in your wallet (this can also be an effective budgeting technique), and then stash some cash in a few other places which you don’t access in public; maybe a money belt, lock some in your luggage (an unlikely place like with your dirty clothes is good), and/or put a few emergency bills in your shoe (underneath the insole is great).

I tend to carry emergency cash in a special pocket underneath my clothing, so if I lose everything, I still have some cash to get me out of whatever bind I may have found myself in.

Using Cash to Your Advantage while Traveling

Although it’s no secret that I am a fan of using credit cards on the road, there are some instances when you can use cash to your advantage. When you are looking at making a purchase (regardless of whether you are in a country where haggling is the norm), ask the vendor if they will give you a discount if you pay with cash. Vendors often have to pay a premium for customers who use credit and debit cards, so if they know you're paying with cash, they could cut you a deal. I’ve had great luck with this at home too; especially with service providers like auto mechanics.

Stay tuned for many more articles in this Travel and Money series, helping you to travel safely, securely, and effectively.

Other articles in this Travel and Money Series:

Using your Debit Card on the Road

Using Your Credit Card on the Road

Like this article?
