12 Preflight Tricks That Make Long Flights Bearable

Sitting still on a jet for an 11, 14, or even 16-hour flight is an endurance sport. Just like running a marathon, it's something you have to train and plan for. It's also kind of like spending the day in the desert, miles from civilization, because although there are a few things your flight attendant will bring you if needed, it's not like you can pop down to the corner store for anything you forgot to bring. You'll mostly be left to survive using your wits and your carry-on bag. So it pays to be prepared.

1. Talk to your doctor about deep vein thrombosis

DVT is a potentially fatal blood clot that sometimes forms in the legs or pelvis, and sitting still for hours on a flight can increase the chances of it happening. If you're worried about this, especially if you have risk factors such as smoking, pregnancy, or obesity, talk to your doctor about precautions. They might recommended compression stockings.

Even if you don't have risk factors, look up some in-flight stretches and exercises to get your blood flowing. And make sure to get up and walk around periodically, even if you're in a middle seat.

2. Assemble your life support system

There are lots of must-have items for your carry-on bag, but seriously, what you put in that bag is what you have to keep you comfortable, sane, and alive for the next half-day or more. You don't want to be stuck halfway through a 13-hour flight without a product or medication that you normally rely on.

Most importantly, pack extras of any prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs you might need. I always travel with ibuprofen for those cabin pressure headaches, and melatonin to help me fall asleep at an appropriate time for my destination time zone. A lot of people consider a decongestant helpful as well. The Aerospace Medical Association also recommends a nasal spray and eye drops for keeping your nose and eyes comfortable in the dry cabin air.

Then, comfort and hygiene supplies: For me, extra lip balm and a 3 oz. container of my go-to (fragrance free) hand lotion are requirements. A pack of tissues, extra sanitary products, and a couple of adhesive bandages are all clutch. Include your contact case and solution as well as glasses, in case you need to take out your contacts. The Aerospace Medical Association recommends skipping contacts in favor of glasses because of dryness.

For sleeping, include a travel pillow, an eye mask, and ear plugs. Don't forget a hair brush, toothbrush, and any makeup you plan to apply before arriving at your destination. If traveling with a baby, bring more diapers, extra clothes, formula, and pacifiers than you think you would ever need.

Throw in a change of clothes for yourself in case anything spills on you, or your checked bag gets lost. Put all this in a carry-on that comfortably fits under the seat, and — this is important — that is easy to open and reach things. If you can access your most-used items without pulling out your bag, you're winning at flying.

Oh, and don't forget a snack. This list of snacks will help. Most airlines still do serve a meal on international flights, but it might be gross. And if you get hungry in the middle of the night, it can be hard to get the flight attendants' attention to ask for a snack.

3. Make sure you have the right kind of headphones and/or adapters

If you have a late model iPhone, you probably carry lightning plug earbuds that won't work on the headphone jack in your seat, making the in-flight movie a disappointingly silent experience. Same goes for Bluetooth headphones. Some airlines still hand out headphones, but not all.

To be safe, pack a pair of earbuds with the old plug, or a Bluetooth transmitter that can plug into the plane's jack. If you're traveling with a companion, you might also want to throw a headphone splitter into your carry-on so you can watch and hear a movie together.

4. Figure out if you can get Wi-Fi

Some airlines offer free Wi-Fi, others offer it for a fee, and still others participate in the Gogo In-flight Internet program, which sells day passes for $19. If you have a high-end travel credit card, check your list of benefits to see if Gogo is included.

5. Make a work plan

If you plan to work on the flight, download any documents you might need, since you can't count on that in-flight internet. Make sure your laptop is fully charged, and bring an extra battery pack or portable charger. If you use a wireless mouse, pack extra batteries for it. If your work is confidential in nature, a laptop privacy screen may be necessary.

6. Make a backup entertainment plan

Don't just assume you'll watch movies provided by the airline. First, your plane might not even be equipped with personal screens. Second, I have been on multiple flights where the entertainment system or Wi-Fi failed. Third, the available movies might not appeal to you.

Download TV episodes or a movie onto your laptop, tablet, or phone. If you have a Netflix subscription, you can download some shows and movies there. You can also download books and audiobooks. Bring a portable battery pack for the device you'll be using for entertainment.

Always pack something analog to do as well, such as a paper book to read or knitting, or some crossword puzzles, so that you're not stuck making origami out of your in-flight magazine if your devices run out of power. Besides, your eyes will eventually get tired of looking at a screen.

7. Plan the world's most comfortable outfit

Unless you're in a premium class, you probably don't want to tie up the bathroom long enough to change into pajamas during the flight — or you might not be limber enough to perform the contortions required to change in such a tiny space. I prefer to board the plane wearing something pajama-like. In fact, I've boarded in actual (nonrevealing) pajamas without a trace of shame. But lately, my long-flight uniform is a pair of sweatpants, a T-shirt, and a sweatshirt with a large, soft hood that can supplement my travel pillow.

Make sure not to wear anything that might slip or ride up if you fall asleep. This is particularly important if you're lucky enough to be flying in a premium cabin where you can lie down. If there's anything worse than walking down the aisle and seeing a fellow passenger snoozing with her nightgown askew, it would be waking up to realize you are that passenger.

The other must for your in-flight wardrobe is layers. When you're sitting on the runway, the plane will be approximately 1 million degrees and stuffy. But once you're in the air, you may get cold.

8. Test drive anything you will use in-flight

This may seem like overkill, but trust me: When you're stuck in a tube in the sky with no urgent care for 5,000 miles, it's a terrible time to realize that a your child is allergic to the medication you just gave them, or even that you wore underwear that won't stay put.

Use any medication you're bringing for yourself or your children at least once preflight. Try sleeping overnight in the outfit you plan to wear, down to the socks and underwear. Try the travel pillow, put on the eye mask (and keep it on all night), and test drive the headphones. You won't regret it.

9. Get a good night's sleep

Most people hope to sleep at least some of the hours of a long flight, especially if you'll be arriving at your destination early in the day local time. However, it's a mistake to stay up late or skip sleeping entirely the night before takeoff. It'll put you in a fog when you need to be sharp to get through security and onto the plane without forgetting anything, and if you can't fall asleep on the plane, you'll be truly miserable by the time you arrive.

10. Scrub up — fragrance free

I don't have to tell you to take a shower before getting on a long flight. But for the sake of the passengers around you, consider using fragrance-free toiletries this time around, and definitely skip any cologne, perfume, or body spray. As the hours pass and the plane air gets stale, these odors can really wear on fellow passengers, especially those who are sensitive or allergic.

11. Eat flight-friendly foods

Avoid taking any culinary risks — say, eating at an iffy roadside stand — for 24 hours before the flight, because a jetliner is never a good place to ride out a case of food poisoning. And of course, you want to avoid eating anything that might cause indigestion or — for the sake of your fellow passengers — flatulence during the flight. But the Aerospace Medical Association has another reason to avoid gas-forming foods such as beans and cabbage before or during a flight: Any gas inside you expands on takeoff, causing discomfort even for those who could easily tolerate these foods on the ground.

12. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

There is something about the physics of air travel that sucks every molecule of moisture out of your body. I know it's tempting to not drink anything before a flight, to avoid having to get up and use the bathroom, but you've really gotta drink water — at home, at the airport, and on the plane.

Because of low humidity in the cabin, the Aerospace Medical Association recommends 8 oz. for every hour you'll be in the air in order to stay comfortable. And avoid sugary, caffeinated, or alcoholic beverages. I never board a plane without a bottle of water filled up in the terminal, because, ew, airplane water.

21 Unexpected Items You Should Always Pack in Your Carry-On

This is not your first trip down the jetway. You've got your eye mask, your noise-cancelling headphones, your laptop or tablet, your multi-item charger for the airport, your backup power source, and even your actual paper book in case all your technology runs out of battery. But what did you not think to put in your carry-on that could make your flight better? Here are a few I never fly without, and a few more I can't wait to try. Domestic

Maybe you're only going to be stuck in that hamster cage they call a seat for a few hours, but that doesn't mean you should show up without any provisions for your comfort.

1. A pencil and notebook

Unlike a laptop, which will run out of power, or a pen, which might refuse to write at altitude, this little piece of technology won't let you down when you are bored enough to write poetry or fill in the in-flight magazine's crossword puzzle.

2. A headphone splitter

While it's obvious you'll be bringing headphones, do you really want to sit there, laughing at the movie on your laptop, while your companion sits there and seethes? Share!

3. A medicine bag

Include painkillers, because, ouch: altitude. Antihistamines and decongestants are also good calls. Some of us like to carry something that will make us sleepy or calm our nerves. If you need an inhaler or insulin, it's obviously important to bring plenty for your own safety, but also because if you ever ask a flight attendant if they have a spare inhaler, you'll probably be denied boarding for medical reasons. They don't want to take the risk of anyone having a health emergency in the sky.

4. A change of clothes

Because you never know if or when your checked bag will make it to your destination, and what if the person next to you spills his coffee all over you?

5. A tennis ball

Huh? Travel & Leisure swears you should bring this piece of sports equipment on board, and use it to massage your back, legs, and feet to keep the blood flowing during the flight.

6. Business cards, or a copy of your manuscript

Because you never know when you'll be seated next to the one business contact you always dreamed of meeting.

7. Sanitizing wipes

Because did you know people change their babies' diapers on those tray tables? Wipe it down the moment you take your seat.

8. Another bag, like one of those shopping bags that pack down tiny

Because you might not be able to quickly stuff everything you used on the flight back into your carry-on when it's time to go.

9. A pacifier

Not traveling with a baby? Imagine what a hero you might become to the whole flight if you whip out a new, in-the-package bippy for a family that has lost theirs. Back when I traveled with infants in tow, I once had another mom offer me $10 for a single pacifier. (I gave it to her for free.)

10. Slipper socks

Because if you're like me, you wore slip-on sandals through security, and now your feet are cold.

11. An empty water bottle

12. A USB or Apple lightning cable

Some planes now have ports in the seat, so you can charge your phone! Make sure you buy the rapid charging kind.

13. Your rights

Print out the US Department of Transportation's rules on delays, bumping passengers, and compensation. Why? Because crews may take advantage of the fact that most people don't know off the top of their heads that they're entitled to 400% of the original fare, up to $1,350, in cash, if they're bumped and arrive at their destination more than two hours late on a domestic flight, or four hours on an international flight. Having these guidelines on hand will allow you to make an informed decision if you're asked to get off the plane, and to ask for what you're owed while you're still at the airport.

14. A comfort item or hypnotherapy recording

Do you get scared, especially during takeoff? Don't be ashamed to bring a stuffy from home that you can squeeze until its eyes bug out. Personally, I like to use self-hypnosis to talk myself down, and if you're new to that type of thing, you could download a recorded hypnosis session to your phone. The side benefit of using hypnosis to fight fear of flying is that it might actually help you fall asleep.

International

On an overseas flight, you will almost certainly try to sleep at some point, making your carry-on arsenal especially important. It's also more important to make friends, since you'll be stuck with everyone you see while boarding for the next 12 hours or more.

15. Treats for the crew

I never would have thought of this myself, but when I read about professional air passenger Ben Schlappig bringing designer chocolates to the flight attendants, I realized how much sense it makes. These are the people who will be responsible for, yes, making sure you make it to the emergency exit in a water landing, but also for whether you get a Jameson refill when you can't sleep with nine hours of flight time to go. Will they accept your goodies? Maybe, maybe not — I can imagine accepting edibles from unknown passengers being considered a security risk — but just the offer will mark you as a super nice passenger who deserves to be treated like one.

16. More than one kind of travel pillow

It may seem like a waste of space, but there are a lot of differently shaped travel pillows on the market now, and if you are trying for a solid six hours (let's not wish for the moon and say eight), you are going to want to change positions. On a recent trip to Australia, I alternated between a Turtl, which is like a scarf with a stiff support to let you sleep with your head leaning to the side, and one with a flat back so that I could recline straight back.

17. Something cozy to snuggle up and hide in

I like to wear a Chicago Cubs sweatshirt with pockets and hood so large I can pull it down over my eyes, but others swear by scarves or Turkish towels. In all cases, you're packing something you can use as a blanket or as a barrier between you and a questionably clean airline blanket, but it's also something you can put to other uses.

18. Melatonin

Sleep scientist Matthew Walker confirmed during a recent interview that this hormone in pill from can help you adjust to a new time zone. I take it about an hour before I want to fall asleep on a flight.

19. A cord for your glasses

On my last long-haul flight, I dropped my glasses in my sleep. The flight attendants let me crawl on the floor under my seat for an hour without mentioning that someone had turned in a lost pair of glasses.

20. The address of where you're staying, on paper

Before you land, the crew will pass out immigration forms, and you'll be expected to have that info at your fingertips. Don't leave it on an electronic device that might be out of power by now.

21. A truly delicious snack

When I traveled with little kids, I always tried to bring a toy or book they'd never seen before to keep them occupied. You can do this for yourself, too, by skipping your typical snacks and stashing something you love, like a high-end chocolate bar or some gourmet wasabi popcorn, into your bag. If you have the willpower, save it for midflight, when the flight attendants are sick of you and you feel like the journey will never end. Then eat your treat as slowly as possible.

How to Sign Up for Global Entry

If you travel a lot, you probably also stand in line a lot. You can rest your weary feet and make the whole travel process a lot more streamlined by signing up for the Global Entry program, especially if you plan on traveling abroad.

Applying for Global Entry isn't rocket science, but it does take some work on your part before you travel. Here's how to do it.

What is the Global Entry program?

You might be familiar with the TSA Precheck program. It's run by the Transportation Security Administration and allows approved applicants to speed through domestic security checkpoints without removing their shoes, laptops, liquids, belts, or light jackets.

The Global Entry program is the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's version of an expedited traveler program. If you have Global Entry status, you're entitled to all of the benefits of the TSA Precheck program, but you'll also get expedited entry through customs when traveling abroad. No more waiting in long U.S. customs lines, which means you can be on your way even sooner.

Why choose Global Entry over the TSA Precheck program?

On the surface, the TSA Precheck program seems like a better deal. It costs $85 to apply, whereas the Global Entry program is $100.

However, for that extra $15, you can get access to all of the TSA Precheck benefits plus the extra Global Entry benefits, like being able to travel through customs much easier. Your approval for either program lasts for five years, so even if you don't have any plans to travel abroad right now, you may still be able to use these benefits in the future

How to get Global Entry for free

The $100 application fee for Global Entry may seem steep. But you can get it for free by using certain travel rewards credit cards. All you have to do is charge the $100 fee to the credit card, and the charge will be wiped away through a statement credit. I paid for my application fee with an eligible credit card, and I received an automatic $100 statement credit right after making the purchase. How do you apply for the Global Entry program?

You'll need to meet a few criteria to apply for the program. You must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident, and you can't be convicted of or under investigation for a criminal offense.

If you meet those qualifications, the next step is to apply for the Global Entry program. To do this you'll need to create an account with the Global Online Enrollment System (GOES). This will be your portal for all Global Entry-related communications throughout the application process and into the future.

Once you create a GOES account, you can log in and complete an application for the Global Entry program. You'll need to have some information on hand: your passport, driver's license, and employment and residence history for the past five years. Be patient; the website still looks like it's from 1995. It took me about 38 minutes to complete my application. Finally, you'll need to pay a nonrefundable $100 application fee.

Assuming everything checks out, you'll be granted a conditional acceptance into the program. The final step is actually going in to an enrollment center for an in-person interview. These enrollment centers are often located at major airports, so check beforehand to see if you will actually be able to easily get to one for your interview.

Apply far in advance of your next international trip. In busy areas, it can take weeks or even months to get an interview appointment. The good news is, a new program called Enrollment on Arrival is available at a select number of airports and allows you to do your interview as you arrive and clear U.S. Customs. However you arrange it, make sure to bring your passport and driver's license for the interview.

What happens if you're approved?

Congratulations! You'll be issued two things: a known traveler number, and a Global Entry card. Make sure you activate your Global Entry card through your GOES account within 30 days of receiving it.

Then enter in your known traveler number when making airline reservations so you can take advantage of the program's features. You can use the TSA Precheck line to zip through security, and you can take advantage of Global Entry kiosks at eligible international airports to bypass the laborious customs re-entry procedures.

If you're traveling by land, you can use your Global Entry card when coming back into the United States from Canada or Mexico, in conjunction with the NEXUS and SENTRI programs. SENTRI allows expedited clearance for preapproved travelers arriving in the U.S. from Mexico, and NEXUS does the same thing for travelers from Canada. Simply pop into the NEXUS lanes if you're coming back from Canada, or the SENTRI lanes if you're coming back from Mexico.

What are the limits of the Global Entry program?

Although the Global Entry program works very similarly to the TSA Precheck and NEXUS programs, there are some differences that could trip you up if you're not careful.

TSA Precheck allows minors under 13 to accompany you without applying for the program themselves. Not so with Global Entry: If you have kids, each one will need to go through the whole application and interview process before they can use the Global Entry benefits

If you renew your passport within the five-year Global Entry membership timeline, you'll need to remember to update your passport in your GOES account or you can't use the program.

The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol is mute on whether your passengers need Global Entry cards or not if riding with you back into the U.S. through a NEXUS or SENTRI lane. However, to be on the safe side, it's best to assume they do need it, and to avoid these lanes if you're with non-Global Entry passengers.

Applying for the Global Entry program sounds intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. All it takes is a little bit of time now so that you can save oodles of time later. After all, you've got better things to be doing than waiting around in lines all day.

9 Ways to Avoid or Mitigate Flight Delays

If you fly even a few times a year, chances are at some point you'll have your flight delayed or canceled. About one in five flights by the major U.S. airlines have been canceled or delayed this year, according to the Department of Transportation.

Either event can mean missed connections or disruptions to your schedule at your destination. A cancellation can mean being stuck in an airport for hours or days while you wait for another flight. When it comes to shorter itineraries with a quick turnaround, you could even be delayed so long you miss your event. (See also: Your Flight Was Canceled. Now What?)

Worried about getting to your destination on time? Consider these strategies.

1. Fly morning routes

If you book the last flight of the night and it's canceled, you can guess what will happen. You and every one of your fellow passengers will try their hardest to get on the next flight out the following morning. And yes, an overnight stay is imminent.

If you fly morning flights, on the other hand, you'll have a good chance of squeezing onto another flight later in the day. This is especially true with popular routes that feature several flights departing from your home airport on a daily basis.

2. Book nonstop flights whenever you can

The more stops or layovers on your itinerary, the more opportunities for delays or cancellations you'll face. This is especially true if some of your stops are in areas where inclement weather is common, or if you're traveling to an airport with a poor on-time flight record. If you have an extremely tight connection time (less than 60 minutes), a delay on the first leg of your flight increases your chances of missing the second leg. 3. Fly on off-peak days

According to a recent study from CheapAir.com, the cheapest days to fly this summer are Tuesdays and Wednesdays. You'll save $62 per person on average if you avoid Sundays (the most expensive day to fly). You can also save if you avoid the month of July altogether and travel instead during late summer or fall, when airports are less crowded.

This is the simple result of supply and demand. Since weekends and certain months are busier times to travel, airfare costs more.

But there's another reason to avoid those busy times. The more flights that are scheduled and in the air, the more chances of something going wrong. If you want to reduce your chances of having a flight canceled or delayed and perhaps save some money in the process, avoid flying on busy weekends and choose off-peak days instead.

4. Consider flying out of smaller airports

Another way to reduce the chance of delays or cancellations is to avoid congested airports. The more flights coming in and out, the more schedule changes may take place. By choosing an airport with fewer flights, you may reduce your chances of having your travel plans spoiled by a cancellation or delay. If you live in an area with more than one airport, consider flights from the smaller of the two.

5. Avoid airports with a bad reputation for delays

Some airports are more prone to cancellations and delays than others, for various reasons. MileCards recently profiled the best and worst airports in the country in terms of on-time departures during the summer.

According to its study, Newark has the worst 10-year record for summer travel, with only a 66.5 percent on-time rate. New York's LaGuardia and Kennedy airports, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago O'Hare, Philadelphia, Miami, Washington Reagan, and Columbus round out the top 10 worst airports.

If it's feasible to avoid these airports, you can add this strategy to your delay-avoiding arsenal.

On the other hand, Kahului, Honolulu, Salt Lake City, Orange County, Phoenix, Seattle, San Jose, Minneapolis, and Las Vegas are the best for on-time summer travel, according to the report.

6. Avoid holidays and other peak travel times

This tip goes without saying. Whenever you travel over a holiday or peak travel time, there's more chance of something — anything — going wrong. Peak travel times can include entire seasons like "summer," but they can also include peak travel weeks like spring break and winter break.

It also depends where you're traveling. While "peak" travel time to Europe is summer, winter is the most popular time to travel to the Caribbean.

You can't always avoid traveling during peak times, but it helps to keep the fact that delays and cancellations are more likely during these times in mind. If you're going to travel during peak travel season, using some of the other strategies on this list could lessen the impact of a delay or help you avoid one.

7. Have alternative flights picked out and ready

Here's another smart tip: If you are paranoid about cancellations, try choosing your alternative flights and having the information about them written down and easily accessible. That way, if your flight is indeed canceled, you'll be ready to let the airline know a solution to your issue. By having flights picked out, you can beat the masses who aren't prepared and have no idea what to do next.

8. Check your credit card

The agents at the gate not being helpful? Does your credit card have a concierge service you can call? Does it give you access to an airport lounge (where you cannot only sit out the delay in quiet and comfort, but where there are available agents that are not as harried as the ones at the gate facing a long line of angry and irritable customers)? Can you book a new flight with your points so you don't feel the sting of the extra charges as much? Some may even provide a refund for your delayed or canceled flight, as well as for charges incurred because of it, if it includes the right travel insurance.

9. Never check a bag

This tip may sound crazy, but if you're worried about flight delays and cancellations, never check a bag. Once your bag is on a flight, you could experience severe hardship tracking it down if you wind up on another flight leaving later that day or the next day. By sticking to carry-on only, on the other hand, you can ensure your bag is always nearby — and never in luggage purgatory.

Your Flight Was Canceled. Now What?

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 23,221 flights by 12 major U.S. based airline carriers were canceled altogether in 2016, and that's on top of the 215,131 arrival delays reported last year. Some 82 percent of flights arrived on time.

While the bulk of delays and cancellations are due to inclement weather and entirely out of the control of airlines, some flights are delayed or canceled for reasons airlines can control.

Occasionally, a flight isn't canceled but oversold, in which case you may be booted off while everyone else departs. Other times, staffing issues and mechanical breakdowns are at fault. Again, these issues are rarely optimal for airlines, and more of the Murphy's Law of travel.

What should you do if your flight is completely canceled or delayed so long it becomes a hardship? Here are some tips that can help you avoid this issue and deal with the outcome.

Get in line, and call the airline while you wait

If you're already at the gate when you learn your flight is canceled, you'll quickly find yourself in the midst of an angry crowd. The best thing you can do is get in line, and do it quickly. Then, while you wait, search for alternative flights on your smartphone so you're ready with alternatives once you reach the desk.

If you're way back in a slow-moving line, don't be afraid to call the airline while you wait. If you're able to connect over the phone before you get to the gate agent, you may get an answer and be offered an alternative right away.

Ask to be rebooked on the next available flight, pronto

The ideal situation is one where you're rebooked on the next available flight. Unfortunately, this is the scenario everyone else on your canceled flight is hoping for.

By searching for flight alternatives and calling the airline while you wait, you can hopefully beat the crowds and score a seat. And if you can't get on the next flight out, you can ask for access to the following flight or even a flight with a partner airline traveling to the same destination.

Request food and lodging vouchers

While an airline might not offer assistance if the delay or cancellation is caused by a situation beyond their control (e.g. weather, civil unrest, acts of terrorism, etc.), they will normally pony up something if the flight is canceled due to reasons within their control. In the U.S., you may be entitled to a room voucher for a stay at a local hotel in the case you can fly out the next morning. You may also be eligible for dining vouchers to pay for your next few meals.

For flights within the European Union or arriving to the EU on an EU airline, your rights are typically more robust. According to EU air passenger rights rules, "you have the right to reimbursement, rerouting or return, as well as the right to assistance and a right to compensation. Compensation is due if you were informed less than 14 days before the scheduled departure date." The air carrier has the obligation to prove if and when you were personally informed that the flight was canceled.

Make sure you know your rights so you can ask for what you're eligible for.

Get a refund

While a refund may not get you where you were going, it's an option to consider when others won't work. With an instant refund, you may be able to book a flight to your destination with another airline, after all.

Fortunately, airlines are equipped to dish out refunds for the unused portion of your ticket for flights canceled by the airline, regardless of circumstances. If that's the best case scenario for this particular canceled trip, make sure to ask for your money back right away.

Lean on travel insurance for help

Some of the best rewards and travel credit cards offer coverage that can help in the event of a delayed or canceled flight. Often called trip cancellation or interruption insurance, you might be able to get a refund for your expenses, as well as reimbursement for additional expenses such as meals or lodging if your common carrier (airline, bus, cruise ship, train) travel is delayed by 12+ hours or you require an overnight stay. Beware These Sneaky Fees on Discount Airfare

Discount airlines have broadened the base of those who can afford to fly. These no-frills carriers slash prices by limiting benefits and offering an a la carte airline experience. But sometimes, flying a discount airline isn't nearly as cheap as you think.

If you've ever priced airfare, you've probably wondered why discount carriers offer lower prices and how they do it. How can Allegiant Air afford to let you fly from Cincinnati to Fort Lauderdale for $122 or less? And how can an international airline like WOW Air stay afloat when a round-trip flight from Boston to Reykjavik, Iceland costs less than $320? (See also: Best Travel Rewards Credit Cards)

The answer is "unbundling," an industry practice that's been growing for the past decade. Back in the day, when you bought an airline ticket, you automatically got an advance seat assignment, checked bags, carry-ons, and even meals (it's true — ask your grandparents).

Then came deregulation and rising fuel costs, and multiple airlines went bankrupt. Those that survived sought to boost profits by unbundling all those included services, meaning you had to start paying for many things that were once baked into the airfare. Airlines pitched this as a consumer benefit — why pay for checked bags if you're just bringing a carry-on? And it is a good deal for some passengers, but it's also a way for the airlines to make money — more than they made before unbundling.

Hidden fees on discount airlines

Discount airlines have taken the unbundling concept to the extreme, making them the most beloved airlines by some, and the most despised by others.

Not only will you be charged for checking a suitcase, you'll also pay extra to carry on a bag too big to fit under your seat (in fact, Frontier Airline charges more for a carry-on than a checked bag). Usually, the earlier you pay for bags, the cheaper it will be. Wait until you get to the gate and you could pay as much as $100 for a carry-on.

Then there are fees for choosing a seat, which goes up the more legroom you ask for. And you'll have to cough up extra for printing your boarding pass at the airport, for booking using a credit card, and even for water onboard (Spirit Airlines is notorious for charging $3 for water unless you need it to take medicine).

Sometimes these fees can cost as much as the fare itself. Take Allegiant Air, for example. Round-trip airfare from Cincinnati to Fort Lauderdale rang in at around $122 for random dates in May, which is downright cheap. But if you dig a little deeper, you'll find the base fare includes almost nothing.

Want an assigned seat near a window or an aisle? There's a fee for that (at least $10 each way). Need extra leg room? Roomier seats on this particular Allegiant flight start at $21, each way. You can bring one "personal item" on the plane for free (think: a purse), but you'll have to pay another $30 round-trip to bring a standard carry-on.

If you want to check a bag, that's another $40 round-trip. And if you need an agent to print your boarding pass at the airport, that's another five buckaroos each way. Pay with a credit card? Tack on $8 each way.

All of a sudden, your $122 flight surges to $238. While that's still affordable as far as airfare goes, it's nearly twice as much as the base price you were tempted with.

The same thing is almost always true when you fly an international discount airline. That $320 WOW Air flight to Iceland? It's actually $523.92 when you add on taxes, a carry-on ($81.98 round-trip), a checked bag ($101.98 round-trip), and an assigned seat ($19.98 round-trip). Flying international for $524 is still pretty sweet, but the price is over $200 more than the $320 "teaser price."

How to win the discount airline game

When you're shopping with a discount airline, make sure you know what is — and what isn't — included. Once you're abreast of which services and add-ons are charged on top of your base fare, you can compare prices with other airlines on an apples to apples basis.

Here's a good example.

Let's say you want to fly round-trip from El Paso, Texas to San Diego, California on May 5 returning May 12th of this year. As of this writing, the total cost for your base fare is just under $80 with Allegiant Air. Score!

When you add on taxes ($60.37), basic seat selections ($18), a carry-on ($30), a checked bag ($40), and a printed boarding passes ($10), however, the price tag goes up to $228. Plus, it's an extra $16 if you pay with a credit card, so let's call it $244.

If you search for the same flight with other airlines on Expedia, you'll find prices start at around $388 on American Airlines. Your seat selection and a carry-on are included in your fare, but you'll likely need to pay for $25 for a checked bag. All things considered, the Allegiant flight is still an awesome deal, it's just not quite as awesome as the upfront pricing makes it seem.

The best way to navigate the total costs of your airfare is to run the numbers on every flight you book. You may have to go through a bunch of prompts and fine print to see how much more you'll pay for assigned seats, carry-on luggage, checked bags, and boarding passes. Make sure you understand whether each add-on price is for one way or round trip. Once you have a new price that includes the services you need, you can compare that price to what you'd pay on other airlines. Sometime, it's actually cheaper to just go with a legacy airline. If you really want to save money with a discount airline, you can always consider purchasing the bare-bones option. Make do with whatever seat they give you, carry only a small bag with you, and print your boarding pass at home. Also remember that at least one discount airline is known for "transfarency" — a term Southwest Airlines uses to describe its notable lack of fees. Southwest offers cut-rate airfare with no additional fees for seat selections, checked baggage, boarding passes, carry-ons, and even trip changes or cancellations. At the end of the day, it's up to you to figure out what's included and find the best deal. Sometimes discount airlines really do offer the best pricing in the friendly skies. Other times, their prices are no more than gimmicks.

The Caribbean via Florida

The Caribbean is a common destination for people living in North America. It's close enough to be convenient and far enough away to feel like a different world. With a balmy, tropical climate, the region boasts numerous island destinations that attract millions of tourists every year.

Flying there directly can be expensive. But you can often save a few hundred dollars by flying through Florida (Ft. Lauderdale or Miami, especially). Airfare to Florida is usually reasonable, and from there it's easy to book a cheap flight to your destination in the Caribbean.

This is especially useful if you're traveling to Aruba, but also check prices for St. Thomas, Antigua, and the Cayman Islands.

Australia via Singapore

Flights to Australia are notoriously expensive. It's not unusual to see prices of $1,000 each way for a ticket from U.S. cities. However, you can drastically reduce the cost of your airfare by flying through the international hub of Singapore.

Singapore is a strategic place because there are lots of outbound flights to Australia, and if you happen to be coming from Europe, you'll find lots of flights on those routes, too.

Flying from Singapore to Australia can cost as little as $77 one way. Flying to Singapore can be cheap as well, with deals from the U.S. West Coast starting at around $250. A trip to Australia for less than $350 each way is a huge savings when compared to paying more than $1,000 for a one-way ticket.

Hawaii via California

Many airlines have great sales and competitive prices on short-haul flights to Hawaii from California. You can increase your search criteria to include other cities on the West Coast as well.

Cities to watch are San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle. If you're interested in this destination, you can also subscribe to alerts from airlines that fly there, such as Alaska Airlines, to keep an eye on special sale fares.

Bangkok as a gateway to Southeast Asia

Bangkok is a major hub in Southeast Asia and many budget airlines fly from there to other places in the region for low prices. The Thai capital is interesting in itself, so you may want to consider spending a few days there to explore the city and recover from jet lag before heading on to your final destination in Southeast Asia.

Some major budget airlines you can use in this region are Singapore's Tigerair and Jetstar Asia, Japan's Skymark, and — my personal favorites — Malaysia-headquartered AirAsia for short-haul flights and AirAsia X for long-haul flights.

Iceland as a gateway to Europe

To increase tourism to Iceland and to boost sales, Icelandair has been offering great rates to other parts of Europe. Some flights also give you the option to schedule a layover in Iceland.

Take a look at the Icelandair website for the latest deals. At the time of writing, it was offering a great rate from Boston to Amsterdam for about $500 round-trip.

General international booking tips

If the airfare to your final destination seems outrageous, it probably is. Do a bit of research to figure out what the local budget airlines are. Then you can work backward from there to connect the dots that will get you where you want to go.

For instance, if you are traveling in Europe, look for cheap airfare on airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet. If you find a great deal from the U.S. to a European hub, you can then take a local flight on one of these airlines to your final destination and potentially save big.

In the U.S., look to discount carriers such as Spirit Airlines for potential savings. Just be aware that the price of the ticket includes the bare minimum. That means you'll have to pay extra for checking a bag and even for having overhead bin space.

Justifying the inconvenience

Always be aware that booking through multiple airlines can be an extra inconvenience. It may mean you'll need to schedule extra time during your layover so you have time to claim any checked bags and check in again with a different airline. If you've got the flexibility, you may want to make your layover a few days, so you can check out the place you're flying through. It could be a way to get two trips in one!

On the downside, if you have to check your bags twice, you may also have to pay checked-bag fees twice as well. Factor in all prices before you book two flights, so you can be sure it is actually cheaper than flying one airline. If you can, travel with just a carry-on to make the process easier and cheaper.

If you do decide to book yourself two discounted tickets instead of one direct flight, try to consider it an added value that you get to discover two destinations for less than the price of one.

After years of traveling and countless hours in transit, I've put together this practical guide to help you avoid the pitfalls of air travel and enjoy your trip. 1. Bring your own food and tea bags

Food at airports and onboard domestic flights is expensive — often double the cost you'd normally pay. And though meals are usually free on international flights, the quality is notoriously hit or miss. It's always best to err on the side of caution. Bring your own healthy snacks, like nuts, and dried and fresh fruit. Sandwiches made with bagels are also easily packable and won't squish easily in your bag.

Consider, too, bringing some herbal tea bags. Most coffee shops and flight attendants will give you hot water for free if you ask. This can save you on pricey airport lattes and help you stay calmer than drinking caffeinated beverages. Herbal tea is an especially good choice if you want to snooze while you're on the plane.

2. Bring your own water bottle

Bring an empty water bottle to get through security, and then fill up at the water fountains around the airport. If you're in a country where drinking from the fountain isn't always safe, consider heading to a coffee shop or restaurant and asking them to fill up your bottle with water from the soda dispenser. You can often get ice this way, too!

3. Choose the right credit card

Booking your flight through an airline credit card gives you extra perks while flying. You'll usually get priority boarding, allowing you to get on the plane before all of the overhead bins are filled up with carry-ons. You may also get discounts on in-flight purchases, and travel protections in case your flight is canceled or your baggage doesn't show up.

4. Pack for success

Think strategically before you leave home about how you will spend your time while in transit. If you're checking a bag, be sure to put the items you want to use during the flight in your carry-on. It's frustrating to have packed your earbuds in your checked bag when you need them on the plane!

In-flight entertainment can be a good distraction from long hours of discomfort and boredom. But some airlines don't offer any entertainment, or at least not any that you're interested in. Bring your own to be sure you can stay occupied during the flight.

If you start your trip equipped with the right reading material, some good music, and a few favorite TV shows or movies, you may be surprised how fast your airport and flying time goes by. Amazon Prime allows you to download free books, movies, and music to take with you, and other services such as Netflix and the premium version of Spotify have similar services. You can also save free podcasts to your phone, or pay for audiobooks. With Audible's audiobook service, your first book is free.

Make sure your electronics are charged and ready to go. Some flights offer outlets but you don't want to take the chance that your seat doesn't have it or is not working.

5. Set yourself up for sleep

Sleeping on a plane is another way to make the time pass quickly, but it's admittedly tricky business.

Bring along the items you need for slumber, including an eye mask, ear plugs, sleeping medications, and a neck pillow to get comfortable. A jacket can double as a pillow or blanket if need be. Try to get these items in advance. A neck pillow at the airport can cost twice as much as at a regular store.

Keep everything in a clothing pocket or a bag under your seat so it's easy to access when you feel drowsy. Getting up to rummage through a bag in the overhead bin is a sure way to wake yourself back up.

6. Try to have a sense of humor

Airports can be great spots for people watching. You get to see humanity in action in its many colorful renditions. Of course, it's annoying to be restricted in your movements and trapped in stale air for a long time, but keep things in perspective.

You're getting to experience one of the most freeing things of all, the ability to jet somewhere far away. Having a good attitude will only make the ride that much better.

1. Revealing Your Browsing History

If you haven't been searching for flights in incognito mode, or at the very least clearing your Internet browser's cache, you may be spending more on flights than you should. That's because flight booking sites often use technology that tracks what its customers (you) have been browsing.

That means they know when you've looked at a flight multiple times. Rather than lowering the price to lure you to a final sale, they may raise the price to encourage you to buy before the price goes any higher. Next time, don't get tricked into buying a ticket that's too expensive. Clear your cache first and buy your ticket second.

2. Buying Your Ticket From a Booking Site

Search engines that aggregate flights from a variety of airlines can be a great resource when you're trying to find the cheapest flight (see tip number eight for a great search engine). However, you need to be aware that some third party bookers will charge you an extra booking fee — which you can avoid by booking your flight directly through the airline's website.

Some small and more obscure airlines may not have a website, in which case you can either call or shop around for a third party booker that doesn't have these fees.

Even if the booking engine doesn't list a fee separately in the price breakdown, it may still be jacking the price up. It's always a good idea to refer back to the airline's listing of the flight and make sure that you're buying it from the least expensive website. 3. Booking to Fly on a More Expensive Day

Another common mistake that people make is forgetting to check flexible dates. Different days of the week usually offer different fares. For example, flights leaving the U.S. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays are the least expensive days to fly, according a study by Fare Compare.

If your schedule is adjustable and you're not checking flexible dates, you're probably paying more than you should for your ticket. Prices can vary wildly from day to day for the exact same flight.

4. Flying Into a More Expensive Airport

Some airports cost more to fly into than others, depending on taxes and airport fees. If you're flying into the most expensive airport, you're going to be spending more money on your plane ticket than you have to, and the same is true with respect to the airport you're flying out of.

For example, the United Kingdom has an Air Passenger Duty (APD) of $90 for one adult economy traveler to fly out on a long haul flight. If you have the time, it's cheaper to book a short haul flight (with an APD of $16) to a place like Dublin or Paris, then book your long haul from there.

In general, it pays to be aware of what your departure and destination airports are charging you to take off or land there. It may require some digging around to find these fees, but doing so could save you money on fees associated with your departure and destination airports, and even those where you have a layover.

5. Forgetting Your Airline Rewards Points

If you travel infrequently, or are a member of a lot of airline rewards programs, it may be easy to forget those piles of frequent flyer miles you've accumulated through flights or credit card airline rewards programs. The last thing you want to do is let a hefty rewards stash expire simply because you forgot about it. Whether you use a rewards-tracking website or an old-fashioned spreadsheet, it pays to keep track of your rewards points and expiration dates. 6. Missing Out on the Best Sales

How can you find out about the best deals on airfare? Airlines almost always have an email newsletter where they will announce their sales, but if you're not subscribed, you're likely missing out on these deals.

It doesn't cost you anything to subscribe to airline emails, and it could save you a lot the next time you're ready to book a ticket.

7. Buying Your Ticket Too Early or Too Late

How early or late you buy your ticket can affect how much you pay as well. According to studies by CheapAir, the best time to book domestic airfare in the U.S. is about eight weeks in advance of your trip. If you can't be that exact, at least try to book within a window of 21–112 days before your flight, which is when tickets will be at their lowest prices.

There's some hype about being able to grab last-minute cheap tickets, but this usually has to do with a quirky sale — so it's nothing you should count on if you've been planning your trip for a while.

8. Using the Wrong Search Engine

When it comes to paying less for a flight, using the right search engine is a must to ensure you're getting the best prices. You can use the free ITA Matrix, which has been rebuilt on Google technology, to take advantage of the same software that travel agents often use to book you a flight. We all love going away on vacation, but we don't love the costs associated with it. Usually, the big costs are taken into account before leaving the house — the hotel, the flight, the attractions, even the rental car. But what we often forget about are the little costs that can eat into the budget before your plane even takes off. Here are 10 of the biggest offenders, with a little advice on cutting down these last-minute expenses.

1. Check-In Fees

Most of us check-in way ahead of time to avoid lines at the airport. However, more airlines are starting to charge for different aspects of this service, knowing that you would rather pay a fee than leave it to the last minute. In some instances, you will be charged for the convenience of checking-in online. Amazingly, there may even be a cost for printing a boarding pass (currently Spirit charges $10 if you have one printed at the check-in counter), so look for options that are free (like printing yours at home, or using an app). 2. Checked or Carry-On Luggage Fees

If you've flown anywhere in the last few years, you probably noticed how insanely full the overhead luggage compartments were. That's because people got wise to the checked baggage fees, and started bringing even more carry-on luggage instead. In fact, you'd often see flight attendants asking for carry-on bags to be checked free, due to space issues. However, recent carry-on fees (which are usually more than checked baggage fees) have reversed that trend. Now, there's plenty of room in the cabin, because once again, people are looking for the cheapest option. So, even if you have a bag that's carry-on-sized, look at the prices. It may be cheaper to check it.

3. Overweight Luggage Charges

This one can really bite you at the last minute. If your bag weighs more than 50 pounds, you will pay a penalty, and this can vary depending on the airline. For instance, Frontier will charge you $75, whereas American Airlines tacks on a whopping $200! Sometimes, you can do some quick swapping between bags to get them all under 50 pounds, but if that's not an option, you may find it cheaper to leave some items at the airport (give them away, trash them) rather than pay the hefty fee.

A good way to avoid this is to buy a luggage scale and weigh your luggage before you ever get to the airport. Bring it with you, too. You may also want to pack a light extra bag that you can use in an emergency. Usually, the additional bag fee is cheaper than the overweight bag charge. Or, try Luggage Forward, which ships your bags to and from your destination.

4. Seat Selection

If you're happy with any old seat on the plane, you usually don't have to worry. But if you would like to choose your seat (and if you're not traveling alone, you will most likely want to sit next to the person you're flying with), you'll be faced with a variety of costs. These costs get much higher as you move toward the front of the plane, where there is extra legroom, or if you want to sit in an exit row. Some airlines, like Spirit, will charge you for an advanced seat assignment, no matter where it is on the plane, so you may want to wait until you get to the check-in counter.

5. Food

When you're on vacation, you don't think much about food on the way to your destination. But remember, you're a captive audience in an airport. And when you're hungry or thirsty, you'll pay big bucks. Airport food is always more expensive than it is elsewhere, and when you're traveling as a family, those costs add up quickly. On the plane, it's even worse, with in-flight meals now costing upward of $10 for something quite meager. So before you leave, try and eat a good meal to keep you going through the airport and flight.

6. Parking

If you park at the airport, you won't be paying for this until you return. But make sure you budget for it, because it can really add up (especially at a garage parking, which can run over $20 a day). Instead, look at off-airport parking, which is cheaper and can be paid for in advance. These places offer valet, and covered and uncovered parking, with free shuttles to and from the airport. Most offer coupons and discounts as well, so do a little research before you book. You can get your parking down to $5 a day if you're smart.

7. Car Transportation

If you decide to take a taxi to the airport, you will save on parking fees, but you'll replace them with cab fares. An airport run is often a standard fee for most cab companies, and usually comes with the "airport access fee" tacked on. Depending on where you live in relation to the airport, you can easily spend $75 on a one-way trip, and that does not include the tip. Services like Lyft and Uber are cheaper (although watch out for the surge pricing with Uber), and you can also find car services that specialize in airport runs.

8. Currency Exchange

If you're traveling out of the country, you'll want to turn your dollars into cash you can use when you arrive. And that costs money. Depending where and when you do it, the service fee and poor exchange rate could really cost you. Do not exchange your money at the airport. It's the worst place to do it because it's the most convenient. Instead, order the cash from your own bank way ahead of time, or use a reputable online service. If you can, bring a credit card with no foreign transaction fees with you. It'll really help.

9. Visa Fees

Depending on your destination, you will have to purchase visas to enter the country. For instance, right now U.S. passport holders are required to pay a $140 fee per visa to enter China. That's almost $600 for a family of four, which really adds a lot onto the cost of the vacation. You could choose to visit a country that does not require a visa. There are currently 38 countries in the Visa Waiver Program, so if you pick one of those, you don't have to worry about this fee.

10. Carry-On Friendly Items

If you're planning to bring toiletries and similar personal items on the plane with you, get ready to go shopping. The restrictions are quite clear: You can bring a quart-sized bag of essentials, but each liquid, aerosol or gel is restricted to just 3.4 ounces. If you bring expensive perfume or cologne, and it's bigger than 3.4 ounces, it will be confiscated.

The Current State of Airline Credit Cards

It wasn't that long ago that frequent flyer miles were like gold. Airlines published award charts, and travelers simply had to accumulate enough miles and then redeem them for the flights they wanted. And when miles were redeemed for expensive flights in business class, or reservations with little advance notice, it was possible to receive tremendous value from these miles.

But now, airlines have devalued their miles by raising the number of miles needed for award seats, and by reducing the number of award seats available. These benefits include a free checked bag, priority boarding, in-flight discounts, access to airport lounges, and more.

These cards make sense for travelers who are committed to flying a single airline, are flexible with travel times, and can use the additional benefits. Flying frequently with that airline will rack up miles faster than using another credit card because of the extra bonus points.

The Case for General Travel Reward Cards

For those who travel infrequently, or like to have flexibility in which airline they fly, the more general travel rewards cards will work better. Whether it's a card that can transfer points to various airline partners, or a card that simply offers a statement credit for any travel purchase, users won't get stuck with sold-out award seats or overpriced ones.

Finally, these general travel reward cards are more likely to offer bonus points or miles for non-travel categories, so infrequent travelers can still rack up points for everyday purchases.

5 Airlines With the Best Customer Service

Flying is not the customer-focused experience it was back in the 60s and 70s. In fact, talk about flying to many people today and a grimace will make its way onto their faces. Some say that a plane has become nothing more than a Greyhound bus with wings, and the airlines seem to charge for every little thing. From fees for both checked and carry-on bags, fees for online check-in, charges for movies and meals, and even paying to rent headsets, you get very little for your money these days.

So, when AirlineQualityRating.com releases the findings of its annual customer service study, everyone who flies should take note. If you are going to be in the air, it may as well be with one of the top five airlines that excel at customer service. Here they are.

1. Virgin America

The airline owned by Sir Richard Branson continues to have an incredibly positive impact on those who fly the Virgin skies. It all starts when you enter the aircraft and are greeted by a sumptuous glow of purple in the main cabin (and when you get to Select and First Class, you're in a completely different world). Seats in the main cabin are soft black leather, and of course, there is the vast array of on-demand entertainment, Wi-Fi, personal outlets, and snacks including jerky sausage and veggie chips.

However, where Virgin America really steps it up is the customer service, and the overall passenger experience. Virgin recently introduced "Seat-to-Seat delivery + Chat," and it's the kind of innovation that Sir Branson is known to embrace. If you're on a flight and fancy striking up a conversation with someone, be it a friend, a co-worker, or a complete stranger, the on-board touch screen system lets you break the ice by sending a drink or a snack to another seat. You can also mingle in a chat room, or flirt with someone you saw as you were getting on board. Suddenly, the prospect of a long flight can be turned on its head, and you are now entering an experience similar to a bar or club that uses social media. What's more, the flight attendants are known to be some of the most friendly (and funny) flying today.

It was recently reported that Alaska Airlines plans to purchase Virgin America for $2.6 billion. No doubt the continued excellence in customer service, and on board innovation, was a big part of that purchasing decision. Let's hope it doesn't negatively affect the Virgin America experience.

2. JetBlue

The JetBlue experience is certainly different from most carriers these days. Take a quick look at their "Experience JetBlue" page and the first thing you'll see is the word free.

Yes. Free. And this is from a low-cost carrier.

Once you're onboard a JetBlue flight, you are treated to unlimited free brand name snacks and drinks, including Cheez-Its, Craisins, Terra Blues, and an array of cold Coke and Seagrams beverages. Dunkin' Donuts provides the tea and coffee. JetBlue also boasts the most legroom in coach of any airlines, and you can boost that to an Even More Space seat if you feel like treating yourself.

And then, of course, there's the customer service. It's award-winning, ensuring your travel is the very best. To this end, JetBlue introduced the Customer Bill of Rights, and it guarantees that you get the very best flight your money can buy — or, you get your money back.

Want more? Well, if your flight is delayed by between 90 minutes and two hours, you'll get a $25 credit for future JetBlue travel. If that hits six hours or more, you get a $200 credit. If it's an onboard ground delay, you'll get the same $200 after five hours.

What does this mean? Well, if you're JetBlue, you have quite the financial incentive to keep the planes running on time. 3. Delta

While not quite matching the performance of the top two on the list, Delta comes in at an impressive third place, beating out two airlines that are renowned for customer care. Perhaps part of that was Delta's on-time percentage for 2015, which was a remarkable 85.9%, with only two bags per 1,000 passengers mishandled.

Delta does free snacks, including Biscoff cookies Starbucks coffee, and the usual array of beverages (although as is usual these days, you have to purchase larger snacks and alcoholic drinks).

If you choose Delta to fly international, you'll get uninterrupted sleep courtesy of a sleep kit featuring eyeshades and earplugs (also handy for those screaming kids that can really put a dent in your good humor). See also: Which Delta SkyMiles Credit Card has the Best Value?

4. Hawaiian

Last year Hawaiian were in the number two spot, so they have dropped a few places. But don't let this convince you that their customer service has dropped, or that they are not making the effort. Rather, other airlines have upped their game based on some of the stories that have been told about Hawaiian.

For a start, Hawaiian flights are more likely to be on time than any other airlines. In 2015, 88.4% of the flights operated by Hawaiian were on time and ready to go, which is a huge achievement.

Hawaiian recently took a leaf out of Priceline.com's "What's it worth to you?" strategy, and introduced the Bud Up system. Basically, you book regular tickets and then enter a bid to upgrade those seats to First Class. If the bid is accepted (presumable based on availability, popularity, and route), you will get your seats bumped to First Class at the price you dictated. Could this be as little as $1 each? Doubtful…but who knows!

Of course, being Hawaiian, the airline prides itself on the more laid-back customer service approach you would expect from the island paradise it is named after. Big smiles, great food, and if you like, you can purchase a Lei Greeting and have a garland of fresh flowers draped over you on your arrival at your destination.

5. Alaska

As mentioned in the top spot, Alaska recently put in a huge bid for Virgin America, so perhaps next year they will take the number one slot. For now, Alaska is sitting pretty in fifth place, and this is largely due to the low number of complaints it received in 2015; just 0.5 complaints for every 100,000 passengers. Or, five complaints for every one million passengers.

When you consider how much people hate flying today, finding only five people in a million who had something negative to say about their trip is mind-boggling. So, what is Alaska doing right?

According to J.D. Power, a lot. They have awarded Alaska "Highest in Customer Satisfaction Among Traditional Carriers in North America" nine years running.

Alaska's Customer Service Commitment plays a big part in this rating. It includes a promise of the lowest available fare, flexibility in the first 24 hours of booking, special treatment during extended delays, a guarantee of a clean and comfortable aircraft, and seamless partnerships with partners including Delta and Peninsula.

5 Smart Travel Hacks Only Frequent Flyers Know

Airports can be a drag. Long lines, grumpy staff, crowded waiting areas, and poorly automated climate control can really put a damper on your travel day. But layovers, delays, and airport lobbies don't have to be uncomfortable. Using these expert tips, you can hack your way into a more enjoyable flying experience.

1. Skip the Lines

"Oops! Am I in the wrong line?" Most of the time, these simple words will allow you to get checked in at the priority desk without any issue. If you are at the airport and you see a painfully long check-in line and an empty priority line, consider "accidentally" walking up to the latter. You might be surprised at how often your mistake can save you time.

You may also want to apply for TSA Pre-Check or get a Global Entry card which allows travelers to go through security faster and get expedited clearance through customs. 2. Get Upgraded

The check-in agents at the airport have more power than you know. If there is space in the first class cabin, they can upgrade you free of charge. Be extremely nice to the staff at the check-in counter and ask if there's food on the plane. Maybe you can't go a long time without food? Tell them this and vaguely hint that you'd like to get upgraded.

You could also try the "I've never flown first class and I've always wondered what it's like" line in a last-ditch effort to join the more comfortable business passengers.

3. Piggyback to the First Class Lounge

Every passenger in the first class lounge is allowed to have a guest. You could be that guest! Just hang out outside of the first class lounge and make a new friend just before they go through the doors. Ask them if you can be their guest and you can enjoy a wide variety of drinks and food... for free. If only you could piggyback your way into the first class cabin on the plane!

4. Use the My TSA App

Wait times can vary greatly depending on which airport you're flying out of and what time of day you're scheduled to depart. Check out the My TSA app on Apple and Android to search current wait times at many airports around the world. There's no point in showing up at the airport three hours early if the security check lines will only take you 10 minutes. Conversely, you better be there extra early if the lines are going to take forever. This app can save you a lot of time and worry.

5. Fly Private

I know what you're thinking. Private flights are only for celebrities and rewards point hoarders, but these days that just isn't true. There's a new app called JetSmarter and it's being called the Uber of air travel. Some of the flights found on the app will still be way too expensive for the average traveler, but some are much cheaper than you might expect — like a flight from Houston to Arlington on a private jet with only seven other people for $365 per person. Talk about living large on a small budget!

Fly Smarter

Recent polls have shown that people tend to hate the TSA as much as the IRS, while other polls show that passengers would be willing to pay more for their ticket just to have a more enjoyable airport experience. (See also: Get Exclusive Travel Perks with These Credit Cards)

This is all to say that most people are not satisfied with the challenges associated with air travel. But now you're not most people! You can utilize these tips to make your flying experience as enjoyable as possible.

You'll never fully avoid the hassle and annoyance of the TSA, security checks, and airport line-ups, but at least you can minimize their negative effects now. Enjoy!

6 Little-Known Ways to Save When Booking Spring Travel

As the warmer weather finally starts to creep in, it's hard to not get excited about traveling this spring or summer. With the cheaper gas prices and lower overall airfare, it just might be a good year to finally book that family vacation you've been considering. Here are a few insider tips that'll help you stretch your travel dollar as far as possible. (See also: 7 Ways That Anyone Can Travel for Free)

1. Book Airfare on a Tuesday

According to FareCompare.com, which helps travelers compare airfares to find the best deals, Tuesday around 3 p.m. EST is the best time to book a flight. They found that this is when many airlines release the majority of their sales, which then encourages other airlines to lower their fares to stay competitive. In contrast, try not to book airfare on a Friday morning as you'll end up paying 3% more for fares on average.

2. Fly Out on a Tuesday or Wednesday

If you can be flexible in terms of the day you fly out, you can definitely save some money. According to Airfarewatchdog.com, if you can fly out on a Tuesday or Wednesday you'll find lower overall airfares. While not a perfect science, these two days usually yield lower airfares. For example, CheapAir.com found the difference between a Sunday round-trip flight and a Tuesday round-trip flight to be $58 on average. Also, when booking air travel for a week-long vacation, book Tuesday-Tuesday or Wednesday-Wednesday, as it is by far the cheapest way to fly.

3. Book Hotels Directly This Year

Online travel sites like Expedia and Hotels.com charge hotel chains a hefty 15% fee for an online booking. As a result, many hotels are trying to avoid this booking fee and are willing to negotiate a deal with potential travelers who call them directly. For example, if the Expedia rate is $100 a night, call the hotel and ask politely if they can beat that rate. Since the hotel has to pay around $15 to Expedia, they'll often give you the room for $90/night. It's an extra $5 in their pocket and they've made you a happy camper in the process.

4. Vacation Where the Best Deals Are

Clark Howard is one of my favorite frugal gurus. Every year he takes his staff on a big trip, and how he selects the destination is pure genius. He goes online and figures out what destination currently has the best travel deals, and that's where he takes everyone. By booking travel this way, he has visited every continent except Antarctica and every state except North Dakota. I love his perspective on this travel tip: "I don't pick a destination that I have to go to. I wait for a deal somewhere, buy the deal, and then figure out why I want to go there." To make it happen, Howard suggest using Kayak Explore as it lets you find the best airfare deals for your specific budget.

5. VRBO and Airbnb "Last-Minute" Hack

It's pretty obvious that vacation homeowners using VRBO and Airbnb to rent their place don't make a cent if their place lies empty for the weekend. Because of this, many owners are willing to lower their rate a little bit for last-minute travelers. By last-minute, I'm talking about those trying to book a place within a week of arrival. So the next time you attempt to plan a last-minute getaway, consider politely asking for a 15%–20% discount when using either website. You stand a great chance of negotiating a deal.

6. Hotel Check-In Trick

Have you ever wondered if it's still possible to get a room upgrade when checking into a hotel? According to many hotel employees, you can absolutely still do it, and slipping the front desk attendant a $20 bill is still highly acceptable. There's almost always a better room available, or cool upgrades like free movies, free room service, or late checkout — and sending an Andrew Jackson across the counter is a great way to make it happen.

Also, the same hotel employees share that online booking sites like Expedia, Hotwire, and Orbitz are often going to get you the worst rooms available. The reason is because hotels see these guest as "non-loyal" travelers simply looking for a really low rate. They're not going to give you the rooms with the best views and overall features.
