It has become the one stop shop for anything you need. The Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card awards valuable rewards for not only your Amazon.com purchases, but also for gas, drugstore, and restaurant purchases. If you are an Amazon.com shopper and want to earn rewards on other everyday purchases that can decrease your balance at checkout, the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card is a great card to have on hand.

How This Card Works

The Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card awards points that can be redeemed for Amazon.com purchases or cash back. Purchases made at Amazon.com earn 3% back. Additionally, get 2% back for purchases made at gas stations, drugstores, and restaurants, and 1% back for all other purchases. Amazon Prime members can qualify for 5% back on Amazon.com purchases.

Pros

Earn up to 5% cash back. Besides the 2% you earn from everyday type purchases made at gas stations, restaurants, and drug stores, you earn 3% on Amazon.com purchases (which covers Amazon Fresh, Amazon.com gift cards, and even your Amazon prime subscription). Even better, if you are an Amazon Prime member, you can qualify for 5% cash back on your Amazon.com purchases. There are very few rewards cards which award bonuses on such a wide variety of purchases, especially without any quarterly or annual caps.

Easy redemption of rewards. You don't have to wait yearly to receive your cash back and you have a variety of options to choose from for redemption. The easiest is to use your points directly at Amazon.com checkout.

No foreign transaction fees. Not a lot of cards with no annual fees offer $0 foreign transaction fees. You can bring this card with you while you travel abroad, or make purchases on foreign websites and not get dinged with a transaction fee.

Cons

Best for Amazon.com shoppers. You will earn the most from the card if you frequently shop with Amazon.com. It you're looking for a card with rewards for restaurants, gas stations, or drug stores, there can be other cards more suitable. It is a frugal source of literature for millions of bookworms looking to stock their shelves (or Kindles) with books. For the rest of us, it's a good source for everything else, from tools to toiletries. Recent programs — such as Amazon Prime, Mom, Student, and Local — have made Amazon’s wares even more affordable to customers who fit within these demographics. Thinking of becoming a member or subscribing to one of these services? Check out the following to determine whether one of Amazon’s membership programs is right for you. (See also: Filler Strategies for Amazon's Free Super Saver Shipping)

Amazon Prime

The biggest program that Amazon offers is Amazon Prime. For $79 per year, Prime members have access to a vast array of deals and freebies. For instance, why pay extra for shipping if you can get free two day shipping on most items on the website? This is the most-raved about benefit offered to its members, and this alone makes it worth the monthly or annual cost if you purchase enough physical goods in the span of a year. And instead of paying for a video streaming service such as Netflix or Hulu, Prime offers unlimited streaming of over 25,000 television episodes and movies. Both Hulu and Netflix charge $7.99 per month for streaming, but can they claim the same added benefits as the Amazon Prime program? Clearly Amazon Prime is the winner when you factor in everything else.

Let's not forget that you can save money with the Kindle lending program, which offers Prime members one free book per month through the Kindle Owner’s Lending Library. With over 180,000 books to lend out, you’re guaranteed a steady supply of exciting digital literature at no additional cost.

Unsure if you want to take the leap with Amazon Prime? Check out the free trial offer listed on their website.

Amazon Mom

Amazon Mom started as a simple concept — give mothers more discounts for products mothers buy a lot of, such as diapers and baby wipes, as well as the benefits of Amazon Prime. It offers 20% discounts on “diapers and wipes subscriptions,” as well as exclusive, family-oriented deals sent via email. Although it sounds like a great deal, it's probably not too cost-effective for mothers of kids older than 10 or 11, as the discounts are mostly targeted at younger families.

Amazon Student

Though many companies offer small student discounts, few can compare to the Amazon Student program. Amazon is very college student-friendly in terms of discounts on school supplies and textbook offerings (they even offer a textbook buyback program). Through Amazon Student, members get partial access to Prime benefits (e-book lending and free, two-day shipping) at a lowered cost of $39 per year for four years (assuming you graduate upon the fourth year, after which the rate rises to Prime’s regular $79 per year). Only those currently enrolled in college with a valid .edu email address are eligible for Amazon Student.

Note that Amazon's textbook buyback program isn't always the best option. Sometimes you could get a better deal through other buyback programs, such as through Chegg.com or BookScouter.com.

AmazonLocal

Created to compete with daily deal giants such as LivingSocial and Groupon, AmazonLocal lists a variety of restaurant, entertainment, and product deals as well as getaways. By entering your zipcode, you may browse deals based in your region (or on a national level, if your state isn’t listed). Discounts generally range between 20-75% off the retail or actual value of the item, vacation package, or event. It’s as easy as subscribing to AmazonLocal, browsing through the updated selections, and purchasing vouchers when you find something you like. They even offer a 24/7 customer service hotline for those who are new to AmazonLocal or have questions. The only downside is that, due to its newness, AmazonLocal does not operate on as great a scale as its competitors, and it's advised that you always compare deals through other outlets before finalizing your decision to purchase a deal. Getting AmazonLocal's deals does not require paying a fee.

What about you? What’s your favorite Amazon money-saving tip? Sales taxes are about a third of total state tax collections, second only to personal income taxes as the largest source of state revenue. But the Internet Tax Nondiscrimination Act (P.L. 108-435) means states don't collect taxes on any out-of-state online transactions.

If you have a business in California, your website shopping cart is only required to collect taxes from people who use a California address. Or, seen from the other side of the process, if you live in California and buy from an online retailer in Vermont, you don't have to pay sales tax on your purchase.

Technically, customers in other states who buy from you are supposed to pay use taxes (and you're supposed to pay them when you buy out of state), but trying to enforce that is complicated and virtually impossible, pun intended. The reason is something called "nexus," or physical presence, a concept that originated with the very first use taxes 80 years ago during the Depression.

New York State decided to apply the idea to the Internet with what has become known as the Amazon Law. New York claimed that commissions Amazon paid to Empire State affiliates meant it had nexus in the state, and thus was required to collect sales tax. The state legislature passed a law supporting the claim. Amazon challenged in court and lost, but it is appealing on the basis that the affiliate relationships were simply is a means of advertising.

When North Carolina and Rhode Island passed laws similar to New York's Amazon law, Overstock.com (and Amazon) canceled affiliate programs in those states, putting some online retailers out of business. Fortunately, California, Hawaii, Colorado, and Virginia have defeated proposals to tax Internet sales. But other states, including Oklahoma, are going ahead with Internet tax measures based on nexus.

States such as Nevada, Florida, and Washington rely on sales taxes in lieu of a state income tax, so they have a keen interest in the issue and are working to broaden the definition of nexus.

Still, the lack of sales-tax and use-tax enforcement is attractive to online shoppers, proven by the 20% annual increase in online sales. With that kind of growth it's no surprise that there's a push for new tax legislation through the Main Street Fairness Act. The Act calls for an online sales tax to ensure online stores have the same tax regulations as retailers.

How this all plays out, we can only hope, will be based on business realities, not just legislative avarice.

With something like 7,500 unique tax jurisdictions in the United States, keeping track of changing tax rates will be a job that only a central service or software provider will be able to handle. But the problem is more complicated than that. Some states, for example, don't tax software and other digital products while others do, but they have lower tax rates for prescription drugs, clothing, and food.

Unless special Internet sales exemptions are provided, a seller would have to register in every state where it sells its products or services. For that matter, as it stands, sellers would have to register their businesses in every county, borough, parish, city, or town where they have customers. They’ll have to keep tax records for each jurisdiction too, of course, and make them available in the event of an audit...from any one of 7,500 regimes.

But Internet transactions aren’t the only ones under scrutiny. Catalog sales and interactive-TV sales raise nexus issues too. Even postcards inside magazines that a purchaser mails in to order a product raise nexus issues because the cards have codes that track sales back to the magazine.

In any event, unless a solution is found, your business could find itself in the unfortunate position of selling competitive products that cost your customers as much 8.25% more than other online retailers, simply because you have to collect state tax and they don't. Your choice, of course, is to reduce your price, but that means narrower margins.

One approach to solving this problem was the Streamlined Sales Tax Project (SSTP), created by the National Governor’s Association and the National Conference of State Legislatures in the fall of 1999 to simplify sales tax collection. The leaders of those two organizations were concerned that the 1930s sales-tax approach is just not relevant to 21st century e-commerce. So far, 44 states and the District of Columbia have adopted the approach which encourages "remote sellers" selling over the Internet and by mail order to collect tax on sales to customers living in the streamlined states. It levels the playing field so that local "brick-and-mortar" stores and remote sellers operate under the same rules.

But, according to Scott Peterson, executive director of the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board, "people have lost their enthusiasm and patience for the Streamlined Sales Tax project." Why? Pre-Kindle, I got most of my reading material from the library, borrowed books from others, or at least bought them used. Since most Kindle books are priced around $9.99, I thought I might be tempted to add an extra $10 a month to my entertainment budget.

I was delighted to learn that there are lots of free things to do with my Kindle. So far the only actual cash I have spent on the thing? $27 for a cute case from Etsy. Here are 10 free things I discovered I could do with my Kindle.

1. Browse books on Amazon.

One of my favorite activities in the world is to linger in a bookstore, picking up new and old titles and reading a few pages here, a few pages there. Now that I have three kids, it's something I almost never get to do. One thing that I realized shortly after getting my Kindle was that this thing is a bookstore — one I can step into at any time of the day or night. The Kindle can download a free sample of any book on offer, and these samples are usually one or more chapters in length! I absolutely adore sitting down to breastfeed my son and checking out a new book I heard about on NPR that day — without paying a cent and without even using two hands!

2. Download and read public domain works.

There are multiple places to download free books formatted for the Kindle, but the easiest place to start is Amazon.com. Simply go to the Kindle books page and sort prices from low to high. You'll find a hodgepodge of classics (so far I've downloaded and read Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness) and oddities like ancient issues of the Atlantic Monthly. I think these have been converted to Kindle format by volunteers. So far I have no complaints about the formatting and had no trouble reading them. There are also millions of free books available from sites other than Amazon.

3. Check your email.

Free access to email and the Web is actually the top reason I wanted a Kindle. Kindles access wireless networks wherever you are, just like an iPhone or Blackberry. But unlike those devices, you don't have to pay any data fees when checking your email on your Kindle. The downside is that my Yahoo Mail and Gmail look pretty crappy on Kindle, the speed is low and navigating is cumbersome. To try it on your own Kindle, simply hit the Menu button, select Experimental from the menu, then select Basic Web. You'll find a Web browser into which you can type the URL of your Web-based email.

4. Read blogs.

You can pay to subscribe to blogs on Kindle, but why? The Web browser makes it quite easy to type in the address of your blog, and while the format doesn't look perfect, it's not bad either.

5. Get directions and do everything else that one does with mobile Internet.

You can access Google Maps to get turn-by-turn directions, or really look up anything on the entire Internet. You get the idea.

6. Look words up in the dictionary.

Kindle has a built-in New Oxford American Dictionary. To search it even when you're not reading, hit Menu, then select "Search." You'll be given a text window and the options of looking up what you type in the dictionary, Wikipedia, the books on your Kindle, the Amazon store, or just Google.

7. Listen to your mp3s.

OK, the Kindle makes for a dorky-looking music player, but what the heck? It's the word nerd's iPod. The mp3 function is also under the "Experimental" menu option. (Also, this is not free but you can subscribe to Audible.com and listen to audiobooks on Kindle as well.)

8. Read your own files.

This site has instructions for transferring PDFs to your Kindle — you can have them converted to Kindle format or just transfer them as PDFs.

9. Buy and read new releases — with Swagbucks.

Recently, I wrote about how I used the Swagbucks site to earn Amazon gift certificates for my Christmas shopping. Many of you signed up — and thanks to you I am getting so many points called SB each day that I can afford to cash some in for Amazon gift cards, which I then spend on Kindle books — and still have plenty left over to save for next Christmas. Once gift cards are applied to your Amazon account, they will automatically be used to pay for any books you order through your Kindle. It takes about 900 SB (they recently multiplied all SB by 100) to pay for one $9.99 Kindle book, and I'd guess that most people who use Swagbucks for search the Web every day could probably earn enough to buy one book per month.

10. Listen to a story.

Once you have books on your Kindle, you can listen to them as audiobooks for no& additional charge with the text-to-speech function. I found the robot voice surprisingly listenable. I also downloaded a free fairy tale book in case I ever need Kindle to read my kids a story in a pinch.

This article is from Carrie Kirby of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. You need to speak to a customer service rep as soon as possible, so you pop onto the website and start searching. And continue searching. And search some more. You'll notice that a lot of companies have buried that information, or don't even have it on the website at all. What now? Well, you can do an online search for the phone number, or you can keep two handy sites bookmarked.

I stumbled across ContactHelp.com recently after an order I placed at Buy.com went very wrong. (See also: How to Get a Refund When Something Is Non-Refundable)

First, the product they sent was faulty. So, I was prompted to go into my account and process my own return to get a refund. Great, except my account showed no record of the purchase. I trawled the internet for a while and found a number, which I called to get an RMA# and a UPS label. I was expecting a refund, but guess what...today, I got a replacement. I didn't want it so I had to repeat the process all over again. Luckily, ContactHelp.com got me the contact info immediately.

Not unlike the original GetHuman.com, ContactHelp.com gets you the information you need to get to a customer service rep immediately. Both sites have a search engine and instructions on how to reach an actual human, but ContactHelp.com has the advantage of a more user-friendly interface and extended information, incuding email addresses, hours of operation, Top 50 lists for easier access, and a very handy User Comments section. This is a place where you can recount your own experience with the company and see how other people have faired. However, if you prefer your sites with the raw simplicity of Craigslist, GetHuman.com is for you.

Now, the reason these sites are even necessary is down to pure cost-cutting. Even though many US companies have farmed out their customer service operations to India, they still want to keep the call volume down to an absolute minimum. So, first they'll put measures in place for you to try and solve the problem on your own. Next will be a customer service email form. Only after all these roadblocks have failed will the option of a phone call be offered up. And as you know, finding that phone number on a website is more tricky than finding Waldo.

So, keep ContactHelp.com and GetHuman.com in your bookmarks. When you do encounter a problem (and you will...sorry) these are invaluable resources for you.

This article is from Paul Michael of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. One of the key points is: you've already bought an item and it's been shipped in a box, so enforcing plastic armor as an anti-theft deterrent is absolutely stupid.

I'm sad to announce that as of this writing, only 19 products are certified "frustration-free". Granted, Amazon has declared FFP to be a multi-year project, but the current list basically boils down to 8 kinds of toys, 7 of the same Microsoft mouse in different colors, and 3 SDHC memory cards. I love keeping you apprised of continuity, so you may remember that in "How to find the sweet spot when buying electronics", I cited the 16GB SDHC from Transcend as a sweet spot. Shortly after writing the article, I purchased 2 of them, and thanks to Amazon Prime, they arrived a couple days later.

Both cards came in a bigger cardboard box, not much deeper than the plastic cases needed to hold the cards. It's basically just a way to figure out how to get to the bargains more quickly, and involves finding the codes for the different departments on Amazon and matching them to a sale percentage. And I'm boring myself just taling about it! Isn't there an easier way?

Well, you can use sites like junglecrazy.com, as I also mentioned in another post. But there, you are limited to what the junglecrazy folks find interesting. You don't get to see the whole ball of wax. So, I did a little digging and found out that a very nice guy has generated a URL hacking script just for amazon. It can be found right here , and it makes the whole process stupidly simple.

As you can see, it's just a simple search engine. Use the pulldown menu to choose your category, select the clearance price (I always go high first, and then work down) and then hit the button. You'll be taken to an Amazon search page with all your results sorted by price. Sweet.

UPDATE!
The Consumerist has just announced yet another version of this bargain finder. You can find it right here .

This article is from Paul Michael of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. It's called Jungle Crazy and it's brought to you by those nice folks who also gave you RetailMeNot and BugMeNot.

What is it? Well, it's a very cool visual search engine of all the Mega Bargain Clearance items available at Amazon.com, all in one place. They're all at least 70% off, some as much as 90% off, and it's about to save me some serious time and money finding gifts for the multitide of folks in my extended family.

Here's a list of some of the cool things I found in just the last few minutes.

Energizer AA rechargeable batteries - $3.98, down from $14.99

2GB Kingston flash drive - $23.62, down from $79.99

Cingular PDA - $99.99, down from $599.99

1GB SanDisk Compact Flash Card - $17.99, down from $59.99

I could go on, but you get the idea. This isn't a bunch of clearance junk. It's quality name-brand items at silly prices. There are two ways to search the site. A floating database at the top of Jungle Crazy lets you browse by your particular shopping interest. Or you can use the search engine box (make sure your search is 3 letters or more). Either way, the results are displayed visually, with the savings, so it's very very easy to browse and buy.

When you find something you want, a link takes you straight through to the item on Amazon.com, which is of course a trusted site. Overall this is my best find of the last few months. Go for it bargain hunters.

This article is from Paul Michael of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website.
