How to Safely Test Makeup Before You Buy

How many times have you bought new lipstick, only to find the color is less than flattering on you? Or maybe you accidentally purchased the wrong shade of blush, making it look like you stepped right out of a bad '80s movie. We've all been there.

Makeup can be quite expensive, and you'd hate to purchase something that doesn't work for you. Testing makeup before you buy can solve many of your beauty woes, but it can lead to a slew of other problems. When everyone uses the same samples, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and other icky germs, which can lead to rashes, breakouts, or even worse: infections.

The good news is it's possible to safely test makeup before you splurge. With these five tips, you can rest easy knowing you're reducing the risk of contracting any scary diseases when testing makeup. (See also: 12 Makeup Hacks From the Pros)

1. Ask for a prepped tester

The first order of business is to ensure the tester is freshly prepped. You can do this by asking a sales associate for assistance. This step is integral because most samples contain some level of contamination. In fact, in a 2004 study conducted by Rowan University, researchers found that after testing makeup samples taken from different companies over the span of two years, 67 to 100 percent of makeup samples contained bacteria. Yuck!

To ensure that you're getting a safe and prepped tester, watch the sales associate as they prep the sample. Every type of makeup is prepped slightly differently. For lipsticks, the salesperson should scrape off the top layer of product, then spray or dip it in alcohol, and wipe it off with a tissue. To apply, use a fresh, disposable applicator or brush provided by the salesperson. Don't use your finger or unsanitary brushes to apply a lipstick sample, as you will just contaminate the product further.

Since the contamination is just on the outside, lip liners and eyeliner pencils are easy to prep. You simply have to sharpen them. (See also: Here's How Long Your Beauty Products Really Last)

2. Test on your wrist

Even with a prepped tester, you should proceed with caution. With many beauty products, contamination can run deeper than just the surface layer, and it's just not worth the risk.

Avoid putting any product directly on your eyes or lips since that is where you are most susceptible to contracting diseases. Instead of testing a product on your eyes or lips, try it out on your wrist or the back of your hand. You'll get an idea of what the product will look like on your face while sidestepping the risk.

Generally, it's safe to test products on your cheek or neck, since the worst thing that could happen is a rash or breakout. Neither are exactly pleasant, but they aren't potentially life-threatening either. To be extra cautious, wash your face thoroughly when you go home. 3. What to avoid entirely

While testing out products before you buy is certainly helpful, there are some products you should avoid testing altogether.

Mascara

Mascara is nearly impossible to prep safely. Bacteria can stick to the wand fibers, making it dangerous to put near your eyes. You can ask for a tester wand, but that doesn't mean someone before you didn't double dip. Plus, if you use a tester wand, you won't have the opportunity to test the wand that belongs to the mascara, which is part of the product.

Eyeliner

Eyeliner, although generally safe if you sharpen it, can also be dangerous to put near your eyes. Instead of testing out eyeliner on your eyes, try drawing with it on your hand or wrist. This will give you an idea of how the product may look.

Powder products

Any powder makeup, or makeup in pots or small jars should be avoided entirely. Any bit of contamination can affect the whole product by going beneath the surface layer or sticking to the edges of the container, so it's risky even if it's properly prepped.

4. Ask for a fresh sample

While not every store does this, many are happy to provide you a fresh sample upon request. From my experience, stores like Ulta and Sephora keep small samples on hand in the event that customers want a clean test product. Of course, out of courtesy for the store, try to limit the number of fresh samples you are requesting to one or two.

5. Order samples online

Instead of using potentially germy samples in the store, have fresh samples delivered to your door. Many cosmetic stores, like MAC and Sephora, allow you to choose free samples with every online purchase. These mini-makeup products are packaged for individual use, so you can trust that they have not been touched by anyone else.

Here's How Long Your Beauty Products Really Last

Do you know when your beauty products expire? It's important to keep track, because using spoiled cosmetics and skin care products can cause skin or eye problems.

Some items are worse than others. For instance, using expired mascara can lead to staph infections, pinkeye, or eye irritations that can even affect your vision in rare cases. Expired items also lose their efficiency. Many professionals agree that you have to use about 50 percent more of an old or expired product for the same effect of a new one. They can become more difficult to apply, too, so it's best to just replace your beauty products once they have expired.

Where to find the expiration date

In order to keep track of when your items expire, you need to know exactly where to look for the expiration date.

Check the whole container: Expiration dates can be hard to find, so look all around the bottle, including on the bottom and sides of the container.
If you don't see an expiration date, look for the little tub image, usually located on the back of the container toward the bottom. For certain cosmetics, the image may be on the exterior packaging that you usually throw away once you open the product. The tub has a number followed by an "M", which shows the number of months until the product expires. For instance, 12M means that the product will expire in 12 months.
If you're not sure when your items are expected to expire, look for changes in smell, color, consistency, or effectiveness as a good determination that they may have spoiled.

Standard expiration guidelines

The following guidelines can provide a good estimate of when certain cosmetics will expire. Some beauty experts recommend tossing items more quickly than others, so these guidelines follow the general consensus. They stray toward later expiration dates so you don't have to waste any product unnecessarily.

Lipstick and lip gloss

Some experts say lipstick can last one to two years, others say up to four years. What everyone agrees on is that once it starts to smells rancid, it's time to throw it out. If your lipstick has become dry or your lip gloss is extra sticky, it may also be time to throw it out.

Brushes

Makeup brushes can last forever if maintained well (see below for tips on how to care for them). If the little hairs start getting crunchy or falling out, it's time to replace the brush.

Nail Polish

Nail polish can last up to three years. If it starts to separate and won't fully mix up when you shake the bottle or if it gets gunky and doesn't provide a clean, smooth finish, it needs to be thrown out.

Perfume

Some experts say perfume is kaput after one to two, others say it can last as long as 10 years. The general consensus is that if it has thickened, changed color, or the scent starts to change or takes on the smell of alcohol, it's time to toss it.

Powder vs. liquid cosmetics

Cream-based or oil-based foundation, eye shadow, and blush is typically only good for 12–18 months. They tend to break down faster than powder-based cosmetics due to the moisture and oil content. Water-based foundation also expires quickly (six to 12 months) because water encourages bacteria growth. Conversely, powder makeup can be kept for two to three years because the dry texture inhibits bacterial growth.

How to keep track

Permanent markers or small labels are your friend here. Mark each product with the date you bought it and the expiration date, if it’s not already printed on the product itself. Keep a monthly list of what is expiring for at least the current month and next month, so you know what needs to be used up soon. By keeping track of these "expiring-soon" products, you can try to use them up quickly, so you don't waste money on unused product.

How to get more out of your products

To prolong the useful life of your cosmetics, follow these tips:

Don't share your makeup with others to avoid contamination
Keep makeup pencils sharpened often and leave the cap on
Use brushes and sponges instead of your fingers to apply makeup to avoid contamination
Store your makeup in a cool, dry, dark place
Avoid using products on infected or inflamed skin or eyes
Invest in a beauty spatula so you can get every last drop out of the bottle
Wipe your brushes daily and deep clean them every week or so with a good makeup brush cleaner

What can be kept past the date?

If you really can’t part with your favorite beauty product, there might be hope for it yet. Some items can be kept past the expiration date (such as powder makeup) because bacteria can’t grow as quickly on the dry texture. Items such as perfume, nail polish, lipstick, and blush commonly last past the expiration date, but the performance and results might not be the same.

Expiration dates for any item that touches your eyes or is made with a cream or oil base should be strictly adhered to in order to prevent skin or eye infections. If your skin is reacting badly to an item or the color, smell, or consistency has changed, it’s a good indication that the item is past its useful life.

7 Things Not to Buy on Black Friday

If I had to choose one word to describe Black Friday, it would be pande-frickin'-monium. Consumers go berserk for doorbusters, big deals, and deep discounts, but all may not be as it seems. Take a look at these typical Black Friday "best buys" that are anything but to help stretch your budget and keep your sanity in check.

1. Virtual Reality Headsets

Primitive virtual reality headsets have been around for a few years now, but they're just starting to enter mainstream technology now that major tech players, like Sony, are designing their own devices. The main problem here, however, is that the tech still isn't where it needs to be to justify the high cost of these coveted Christmas-list items.

"Though it's tempting to get your hands on a virtual reality headset, we recommend sitting it out for one more year," suggests BuyVia, a website and mobile app that combines in-store and online shopping across smartphones, tablets, and laptops. "In order for the headset to be worthwhile, you need a high-end fast PC, which can be pricey without giving you great results. For instance, The Core i5 processor will run you at least $800, plus the Nvidia GTX 970 video card. The PlayStation VR costs $400 but is still pretty slow, and has limited software selection and tracking problems."

Of course, given VR's popularity right now, you do run the risk of crushing someone's holiday hopes, like, big time, if you opt out on this item — but, eh, whatever. There's always next year.

2. Winter Apparel

It's not that you won't find great deals on winter apparel this time of year, but Black Friday may not be the best day to go on a shopping spree for the long johns and wool socks that your nephews are totally dreading. (Seriously — eeeevery year, lady?)

"While you're sure to see deals on select clothing items during Black Friday, it's better to hold off until Cyber Monday when sitewide savings of 60% plus free shipping give you more options," says savings expert Kendal Perez of Coupon Sherpa. "Black Friday clothing deals are often limited to one brand or style — a crew-neck cashmere sweater, for example. What's more, discounts on winter clothing and boots are deeper in January, when these garments go on clearance to make room for spring styles, which typically debut on showroom floors in February."

3. Health and Beauty Items

Like clothing, wait until Cyber Monday and deeper-in-December sales. Prices on individual items and sets, as well as discounts for brands and subcategories, will be much better.

"You may find a few spectacular doorbuster-like deals on makeup, polish, and fragrances, but waiting until the traditional storewide discounts we see on Cyber Monday will bring you a bigger selection of items to choose from," FatWallet.com's Brent Shelton says.

Or you can do what I do: Wait until after the holidays to pick up grooming sets, from brands like Axe and Old Spice, at slashed prices and stash them away until next year. Just make sure the products won't expire within a year or two. Which is important — unless you like the idea of giving your brother a holiday rash.

4. Tools

You may be getting fooled on tools on Black Friday, according to Mike Catania, founder of thesaving community PromotionCode.org.

"While there are plenty of Black Friday 'sales' for tools, the reality is that they're marked up more for the holidays than any other time of the year," he says. The offers look good on paper — up to 30% off — but the original price is 40% higher than it was at the end of summer. This is particularly true for tools in the quality range beneath 'pro-sumer.'"

This doesn't mean that hubby can't get the new table saw that he'll use once before he starts using it as a storage surface. Just do your research and compare prices before purchasing.

5. 1080p HDTVs

Flat-screen TVs have long been a staple of Black Friday doorbusters — many shoppers have the trample marks to prove it. But this year, 1080p versions are hitting the skids for higher-end (but still affordable) 4K HDTVs.

"4K is definitely the future of TV, and the price has dropped significantly over the last year; a 50-inch 4K HDTV is about $400," writes BuyVia in a recent blog post about Black Friday. "4Ks are optimized for Blu-ray, Netflix, Amazon, DirectTV, and YouTube, and you can add Smart TV functionality with an inexpensive $40 Roku box. Plus, if you want to spend a little more money, you can find a 4K TV with HDR imaging for incredible image quality."

The one and only issue I have with this trend — and full disclosure, I own 4K TVs myself — is that cable technology hasn't caught up with TV tech. It may be another year or two until you'll get the full experience of 4K, but you can at least take advantage of the Internet-connected "smart" part of the sets in the meantime.

6. Home Furnishings

The general consensus here is that you should avoid buying new furniture this time of year, not just specifically on Black Friday. Perez explains why.

"Black Friday is all about doorbuster deals on TVs, gaming consoles, tablets, and other electronics," she says. "Rarely do we see an epic deal on love seats and recliners, and Black Friday deals for national chains like Crate & Barrel, West Elm, Pottery Barn, and the like are minimal, often limited 15% to 20% off select items and deals on holiday accessories which don't compete with post-holiday sales. Furniture deals are better in January and July/August, when new styles debut and clearance prices offer better savings compared to Black Friday discounts."

7. Gift Cards

Boy, do I love a good gift card — mostly so I can exchange all the long johns and wool socks my aunt gave me yet again and get what I want. Deal-wise, though, you're better off waiting until December to stock up on these precious pieces of plastic, says Perez.

"Gift cards are a better buy in December when restaurants and select retailers offer bonus cards with gift card purchases. In the past, we've seen free $5 to $25 bonus gift cards with purchase of restaurant gift cards $25 to $50 from Chili's, Benihana, Olive Garden, and more. Retailers like LL Bean, DSW, The Children's Place, and Toys 'R Us also offered free gift cards ranging from $5 to $25 last December with select purchases."
