Should You Go on Vacation While You're in Debt?

When you're struggling to make ends meet and working to pay off debt, you may be inclined to skip the summer vacation. It just doesn't seem sensible to take a trip when you're trying to be diligent about saving.

But taking a vacation isn't impossible, even for the most debt-ridden among us. In fact, getting away may just be the thing you need. Here are some reasons why a vacation shouldn't be out of the question, even if you're working to pay off debt.

You can keep it short and close to home

A vacation doesn't have to involve a three-week European tour. While that's something you'd love to do one day, it may not be in the cards right now. And that's OK. A short trip of just a few days can often have the same positive impact on your spirit and mood. Consider a three-day drive down the coast, or a long weekend at a beach house. Maybe even just a few days backpacking will do the trick. I have found that trips of four or five days can be just long enough to disconnect and recharge, but short enough to keep costs at a minimum. You can rough it

A pup tent and a bedroll is far cheaper than a five-star hotel. Camping's not for everyone, but if you love the outdoors, you can enjoy a wonderful vacation and truly get away. There are many National Parks that offer a low or even no entry fee, with sightseeing that is second to none. And if you have kids, it gets them off the electronics. Take a hike in the Smoky Mountains. Go canoeing on the Buffalo National River. These can be enormously fun and relaxing trips that will hardly cost you a dime. You can share the cost with friends and relatives

No one likes a moocher, but you can save some serious coin by teaming up with friends and relatives. Hotels rates are based on double occupancy, so fill that room! Or consider renting out a house with a large group and splitting the cost. A weeklong rental in the Outer Banks of North Carolina may seem pricey, but not when it's split eight ways. A vacation can bring you mental clarity

One of the most important reasons to take a vacation is that it can allow you to get away from the day-to-day stresses of life and reflect on the bigger picture. If you can slow down for a few days, you may be able to think more clearly about your financial situation and your career goals. While on vacation, you may gain some understanding of why you are in debt to begin with. You might take time to re-evaluate your spending priorities. You may be able to recharge and decide to go after that higher paying job. It's hard when you are in the thick of things to make big changes to improve your life, but vacation can give you the fresh perspective you need.

A break from budgeting can be helpful

Getting out of debt requires strict financial discipline. You need to watch every penny that comes in and out, and this can be enormously stressful. It can be frustrating and depressing to constantly deny yourself things you want and to feel like you need to justify every dollar you spend. At a certain point, you just can't take it anymore, and you end up blowing through your budget or making irresponsible purchases. Taking a vacation can help. You don't need to go away for too long or spend too much, but giving yourself a break from the drudgery of saving money will make you hate it less. Vacations can motivate your debt payoff

Who among us hasn't gone on vacation and found themselves wishing they could live like that all the time? A long weekend trip to Napa Valley might leave you wishing you could chuck it all and buy a vineyard. A few days laying on a beach in Florida can have you asking your boss if you can work remotely from Fort Lauderdale. A vacation can help you dream, and inspire you to make changes to improve your life. You may come to realize that it's the debt that's holding you back from achieving your dreams. If you leave a vacation saying, "I wish we could do this more often," perhaps you'll work harder to pay off debt, save and earn more money, and make it happen.

It's better to spend money on experiences than things

Even when you're working to pay off debt, you're still going to be setting aside some money for things you enjoy. But there's a lot of evidence that paying for physical items isn't nearly as satisfying as spending money on experiences. In other words, forget the new flat-screen TV and go kite surfing instead. Experiences are more likely than possessions to contribute to your relationships, define your purpose and passions, and are generally more memorable. 1. Go outside

Nature is full of interesting new sights and sounds, plus, the fresh air and sunshine can help you to feel more at ease. 2. Call an old friend

Sometimes, the best pick-me-up is speaking with an old friend whom you haven't caught up with in quite some time. A phone call costs almost nothing, and with the extra time on your hands, this spring break is the perfect time to reconnect.

3. Exercise

Simply making time for exercise can be one of the most care-filled gifts you can give yourself. Moving your body releases endorphins, which reduce pain and improve your mood. And you don't need to spend any money to work up a sweat. There are plenty of free workout videos on YouTube that you can follow along with at home, free apps that take you through guided exercises and yoga, or you can hit the road for a brisk walk or jog. 9. Catch up on sleep

7 Times Travel Insurance Is Worth It

Traveling is one of the best things you can do for yourself, but it can also be quite costly. This cost can be exacerbated if you end up being forced to cancel or cut your trip short and are unable to get your money back.

Travel insurance can help you avoid losing money if your plans change unexpectedly, or if you encounter an emergency while on your trip. It's not always worth the added expense to purchase travel insurance, but there are a number of instances when it's wise to get it. Consider these when planning your next trip.

1. The trip is expensive

Perhaps you managed to book a pricey, customized, VIP tour of the Antarctic ice shelves, complete with a penguin encounter. Maybe you got an exclusive after-hours tour of the Vatican Museums. You saved up enough money to book these bucket list vacations. It took you a long time, and a lot of hard work. These are trips that you may never be able to book again if you are forced to cancel. Travel insurance is not necessarily going to allow you book that expensive, once-in-a-lifetime experience again, but at least you'll avoid the pain of also losing all the money you spent to book it.

2. You've had recent health issues

One of the most common reasons you may be forced to cancel a trip is an illness or injury that prevents you from traveling. If you are battling cancer, for example, you may feel good one day and not so great the next. It may also be impossible to predict when treatments or surgery may be needed. In this case, travel insurance can give you some peace of mind and allow you to go ahead and book that trip.

Older travelers who may have certain health conditions that have the tendency to flare up may also find travel insurance useful. It is important to note, however, that many travel insurance policies do not cover trip expenses if you cancel due to a pre-existing health condition, so be sure to check the specific provisions of the policy before buying. 3. There's a chance you may be pregnant

If you and your partner have been trying to have children, you may be wary of vacationing because you don't want to cancel a trip if you do get pregnant. At the same time, it seems silly to avoid traveling if you're not expecting. Travel insurance can come in handy here, because it will allow you to book travel without worrying about losing money if you get some good news. 4. If you're cutting things close

Let's say you've booked a cruise departing from Barcelona leaving on Saturday, but your schedule only allows you to fly to Barcelona that day. To make things dicier, you have to take two connecting flights to get there. If you experience any delays or miss a flight, you may miss the cruise departure entirely. Travel insurance could reimburse you for costs you incur to catch up with your cruise.

Keep in mind, however, that travel insurance may only cover you if you're delayed due to weather or mechanical problems with the airline. Missing a flight because you overslept, for example, may not be a valid reason to seek reimbursement.

5. If you're going somewhere with unknown medical care

Getting sick or hurt on a trip can be a harrowing experience, and that's especially true if you find yourself in a place where medical care is below American standards. Even today, there are many countries that lack a robust health infrastructure, and medical staff there may not be equipped to perform surgeries or other emergency procedures. A good travel insurance plan can cover travel to better health facilities or hospitals, to ensure you have the best possible medical care even if you are far from home.

6. If you're traveling to a "high-risk" country

Adventurous travelers may find themselves in places that carry some risk to personal safety. Some nations are torn apart by civil war or unrest. Others are prone to incidents of terrorism. Even countries that have general political instability can be risky places to visit.

It's possible to buy travel insurance that covers you for a variety of things if you go to these countries. You can be covered for injuries, for example, or if you have to be evacuated. 7. If you're in the military

Those serving in our armed forces must be ready to travel anywhere at a moment's notice. If you are on active duty or a reservist, you know that any vacation could be interrupted if duty calls. Travel insurance can reimburse you for costs if you have to cancel or interrupt a trip due to military service.

Where to Do 9 Popular Bucket List Items on a Budget

Many people have a list of things that they would love to experience before they get old. Unfortunately, lots of popular bucket list ideas also cost a bucket of money to take part in.

If you do manage to find a bargain, there tends to be a catch. For instance, there are plenty of places where you can bungee jump, scuba dive, or sky-dive for really cheap, but the scenery leaves a lot to be desired. Most people are probably not thinking of bungee jumping in a parking lot when they put it on their bucket list. That's why I've compiled this list of some of the best places to try out nine of the most popular bucket list activities on a budget.

1. Bungee jumping: Monteverde Extremo Park, Costa Rica

Monteverde in Costa Rica is in one of the most picturesque regions in Central America, boasting a huge expanse of virgin cloud forest and an extremely diverse selection of wildlife. Thanks to the stunning natural beauty of the surrounding jungle, a bungee jump in Monteverde Extremo Park provides more than just the thrill of falling through the air attached to a rubber band. A breathtakingly scenic jump from the platform, which is suspended by wires 450 feet over the lush green rain forest, will cost you $73. You can find cheaper jumps in other parts of the world, but not many with this kind of view.

2. Scuba diving: Koh Tao, Thailand

Scuba diving isn't just about the actual activity. A good dive hinges on the underwater landscapes and visibility, so where you do it is equally important. Thailand has many well priced hot spots, but the island of Koh Tao is particularly well known for its diverse marine life and colorful coral reefs. A "fun dive" with a PADI certified divemaster here can cost as little as $30, including equipment.

When I was there last, I purchased a 10-dive package for just $200, making each dive just $20! In my experience, the average cost of a dive around the world is $40, so $20 is a great deal.

3. Run a major marathon: London, England

Obviously it costs absolutely nothing to lace up your running shoes and pound the sidewalk for 26.2 miles. But part of the magic of doing a marathon is running a world famous course with huge crowds and an inspiring atmosphere.

Unfortunately, the Abbott World Marathon Majors, a group of six of the largest marathons in the world, is getting more expensive. The New York Marathon now costs an astronomical $295. The London Marathon is priced at just over $104 for an overseas entry, which works out as the cheapest of all the majors.

4. See the Northern Lights: Fairbanks, Alaska

Many people make trips to Scandinavia in an attempt to get a glimpse of the greatest natural light show on earth, the ethereal Aurora Borealis. But Fairbanks, Alaska is easier for most Americans to get to, and is a reliable locale for seeing the northern lights in winter. Both Alaska Airlines and Delta offer direct flights from Seattle to Fairbanks. After the price of a night's accommodation (three-star hotels start at around $80), you can witness them for absolutely nothing. (See also: Why Timing Is Everything When Saving Money On Travel)

5. Spot a killer whale: Vancouver Island, Canada

Though it's possible to see whales in various locations around the world, the waters near Vancouver Island in Canada are among the most dependable for sighting the king of them all, the orca. That's because a killer whale sanctuary nearby is home to around 200 orcas. Seeing one of these 30-foot-long majestic creatures breach the misty waters of the Johnstone Strait, between northern Vancouver Island and the mainland, is an experience of a lifetime. Around $80 will pay for a half-day whale watching tour where you may also spot humpbacks, porpoises, and dolphins.

6. Eat at a Michelin-starred restaurant: Singapore

The Michelin star system is the world renowned standard for consistently high quality food cooked by the best chefs in the world. While a meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant will often set you back hundreds of dollars, it's not necessary to spend that much. You can eat for a bargain $3 at Liao Fan Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle in Singapore. (See also: The World's Most Affordable Michelin Starred Restaurants)

7. Swim with great white sharks: Gansbaai, South Africa

Coming face to face with the ocean's most fearsome predator is the stuff of nightmares for most of us, but some adrenaline junkies take a different view. There are numerous varieties of shark, but cage diving with great whites is the ultimate in underwater adventure.

Though you can see great whites in other locations, the waters off Gansbaai, South Africa are often said to be the best location in the world to do it. That's because there's a population of more than 60,000 seals here, providing a constant source of food. Not only will you see sharks up close from the cage, but you may see them leap clean out of the water attempting to catch their prey.

Gansbaai is one of the cheaper locales for shark-diving, too. Just $119 will pay for an exhilarating expedition of a lifetime. That's a bargain, considering you could pay $775 for a day trip to the Farallon Islands in California, or $3,000 plus for the necessary five to six day expedition to Isla Guadalupe in Mexico.

8. Own an island: Canada

Everyone dreams of owning their own private island that they can escape to whenever they want, but few people realize that it could be a more realistic proposition than they imagine. Surprisingly, Canada has many islands on the market that come in way cheaper than the average sales price of a new house in the U.S.

9. Raft a Class V rapid: Kaituna River, New Zealand

Not all white water rafting is created equal, and while you may find cheaper deals for tamer runs, for the ultimate thrill you need to take on a Class V rapid. Where better to do this than the home of adventure sports: New Zealand.

Throw yourself in at the deep end by attempting the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world, located on the Kaituna river, which is in the Bay of Plenty region on New Zealand's North Island. At 23 feet high it's certainly no joke, but at about $76, the price will definitely leave you smiling.

Beyond Disney: 8 Affordable Family Destinations in the US

While some kids have a unique bucket list of travel dreams and goals, nearly every child dreams of going to Disney World one day. For many kids — and many families — Disney is a box that must be checked off no matter the cost or the inconvenience involved.

But, with Disney World tickets approaching $100 per person, per day, many families can't justify the cost. This is especially true if you need to fly to the park, since even domestic airfare can add an extra $300–$500 per person to the cost of your trip.

Fortunately, there is an array of other family-friendly destinations just waiting to be discovered all over the United States. If you're planning a fun trip with your kids but want to spend less than you would at Disney World, consider these affordable vacation spots all over the country.

1. Orlando, Florida

Sure, Orlando is home to Disney World, but that's not all. This southern city is actually bursting with affordable things to do and see that have little to do with Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck.

For starters, you'll find plenty of non-Disney parks, including Fun Spot America Theme Park and Aquatica Orlando Water Park, both of which are less than $50 per person, per day to visit. Also keep in mind that the Disney Springs district (formerly Downtown Disney), which features plenty of Disney stores and attractions, is free to visit even if you're not going to one of the parks. You'll also find numerous non-park attractions in Orlando, including a wax museum, the Orlando Science Center, and Ripley's Believe It Or Not.

The best part about Orlando is that there is a nearly endless supply of affordable hotel and condo options. Not only can you book a three-bedroom Orlando condo for less than $99 per night, but three-star hotel properties around the city start at just $50 per night. 2. Santa Claus, Indiana

While Santa Claus, Indiana probably sounds obscure (and it kind of is!), this tiny town is actually home to Holiday World & Splashin' Safari — a theme park/water park that was recently named number four in the nation and number 13 in the world. The big difference is, instead of Disney's $100 per person ticket price, a day at Holiday World starts at just $27.99 per person. You also get free sunscreen, soft drinks, parking, and Wi-Fi, making it easy to save even more.

But, there's other stuff to do in Santa Claus, including Santa's Candy Castle (a sweets shop), Santa's Stables (horseback riding), golf courses, and a berry farm. You can also pitch a tent affordably at Lake Rudolph Campground & RV Resort, or book a local two-star or three-star hotel for as little as $56 per night in October. 3. San Diego, California

San Diego is well-known for its year-round perfect weather, its beautiful beaches, and its endless bounty of things to do. You can visit the famous San Diego Zoo, check out the USS Midway Museum, explore Balboa Park, or enjoy a beach day in nearby (and famous) La Jolla.

While California is an expensive state to visit overall, San Diego can be surprisingly affordable. For example, you can book an overnight at a downtown hotel this October for as little as $70 per night. 4. Branson, Missouri

Branson is known for its honky-tonk music and over-the-top shows, but that's not all. The city is also home to a range of family-friendly activities to please kids (and parents) of all ages. You can check out an inexpensive country or Broadway-style show, visit the famed Titanic Museum, or ride rides at Silver Dollar City theme park or take on the Runaway roller coaster at Branson Mountain Adventure Park.

5. Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is a natural wonderland with jaw-dropping scenery and ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. Depending on where you stay near the Grand Canyon, you can find hiking, white-water rafting, and waterfalls to explore.

The Grand Canyon Skywalk allows your family to walk over the expansive canyon without fear, while the historic Grand Canyon Railway offers a fun way to see the area without too much work.

Amazingly, you can book a four-star hotel in Flagstaff for as little as $120 per night this fall, or a simple room at Country Inn & Suites for as little as $99.

6. South Dakota

South Dakota is constantly overlooked as a top travel destination, which is a shame. Taking your kids to South Dakota is both a walk through time and a celebration of our country's natural beauty. Not only is the state home to historic Mt. Rushmore, but it offers the scenic Badlands National Park, Black Hills National Forest, and quirky spots like the Corn Palace and Wall Drug Store.

South Dakota is perfect for a family RV or camping trip, or as part of an extensive road trip across the northern states. Hotels in Wall start at about $70 per night, while lodging in cities like Keystone starts at just $50 per night.

Even some of the pricier hotels in the state are rather affordable. A night's stay at the three-star Black Forest Inn Bed & Breakfast, for example, will set you back just $160 per night this fall.

7. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is beautiful indeed, but it doesn't get enough credit as an affordable beach destination. Believe it or not, you can book an oceanfront condo for as little as $700 per week this fall. Oceanfront hotels like Bar Harbor start at just $44 per night. If you want something fancier, even the Embassy Suites on the Myrtle Beach oceanfront can be booked for as little as $219 per night.

While the beach will keep everyone in your group busy, there is plenty of other stuff to do when you tire of the sand and surf. 8. Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Gatlinburg, Tennessee sits in a beautiful setting among the gorgeous Great Smoky Mountains. The area is known for its mountain scenery, outdoor recreation like hiking and climbing, and a family-friendly atmosphere with plenty to do and see.

For example, you'll find the Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies, which features over 10,000 exotic sea creatures from all over the world. 3. Snowbird, Utah

You won't have to drive far from the airport to get to this playground resort, located just six miles from Salt Lake City. Choose from amusement-park style activities built right into the mountain, including a vertical drop, alpine slide, and roller coaster, all open until October 8. If you get hungry in between all of the adventures, dip into one of the resort's 16 different eateries, ranging from a simple deli, to French, Mexican, and steakhouse cuisine.

9 Ways to Protect Your Luggage on Your Next Trip

Think your last air travel experience was rough? Just imagine what your luggage went through. According to a 2017 report by SITA, a multinational company that provides IT support to the air transport industry, airlines mishandled (i.e., lost) approximately 21.6 million bags in 2016. And while that figure actually represents a record low for airlines, it doesn't reflect theft, damage, or all the other things that can sack your bags. So before you and your luggage enter the fray, take some common sense precautions. Here are nine ways to protect your luggage on your next trip. (See also: The Airline Lost Your Luggage. Now What?)

1. Choose the right bag

Protecting your luggage starts by selecting the right luggage. Hard-shell cases are less adaptable to pressure and can crack or break from rough handling and overstuffed baggage hulls. Soft-sided or nylon bags can handle impacts better.

If you're worried about distinguishing your suitcase from all the others on the baggage carousel, customize it with a piece of bright ribbon, a scarf, or unique luggage tag.

2. Keep it simple

When it comes to luggage, don't worry about keeping up with the Joneses. Obviously high-end luggage is more likely to be noticed by thieves; not only because the bags themselves are valuable, but because expensive bags suggest expensive contents.

3. Wrap it up

Encasing your luggage in plastic cling wrap not only protects it from scrapes and scratches, it's a slight deterrent for the wide range of folks who'll be handling your bag on its journey. Keep in mind, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has the right to cut through any wrapping if an agent needs to inspect the contents.

4. Buy bag protectors

A bag protector is the commercial (and reusable!) version of plastic wrap. Made of durable PVC, these clear protectors fit over suitcases of various sizes and are secured in place with Velcro. They're designed to allow for free wheel movement and feature cutouts for easy access to handles.

5. Put your photo on it

The UK-based online retailer, Firebox, distributes a product called Head Case, a line of stretchable Spandex sleeves that fit over suitcases. Similar to the bag protectors mentioned above, the sleeves offer a distinct advantage: They can be customized with a photo of your choice. By choosing a giant selfie, you can protect your luggage from theft while shielding it from damage (if you don't mind a few chuckles at baggage claim, that is).

6. Take a photo of it

Snap a photo of your luggage before the first leg of any journey — especially international trips. Photos can help airport staff identify lost bags and facilitate communication between personnel in different nations.

7. Use a luggage tag outside and inside

Even the most secure luggage tags can get torn off in transit. Put a duplicate tag inside your bag in case it gets lost at the airport and you need to prove ownership. Oh, and for personal security, don't list your home address or landline phone number on luggage tags; use an email address and cellphone number instead.

8. Zip up toiletries

9. Travel light

What's the best way to protect your luggage from loss or damage? Use less of it. By traveling with a carry-on only, you can keep essentials close at hand, adapt to last-minute flight changes easily, and hop off the baggage carousel once and for all. There's something that every vacation has, and it's something we cannot avoid: an end. After all the planning, the shopping, the traveling, the fun nights out, the wonderful weather, and the incredible food, it's time to come home. And for many, the first step back into the house can bring some serious post-vacation depression. But it doesn't have to be that way. Follow these tips and you can avoid that vacation letdown for good.

1. Plan extra days off before you return to work

Before you even go on vacation, make sure you give yourself at least a couple of days at home before you have to go back to the office. It's hard to fault people squeezing every last drop of vacation time at a resort or holiday destination, but if you don't plan ahead and give yourself downtime when you return, you will really feel the blues. So if you're planning a week off to a sunny destination, add a couple of extra days to your vacation request. You may think you're wasting it by being at home. However, going back to work after getting back to the house the night before is a surefire way to feel the night-and-day of vacation versus work.

2. Tackle as many to-do items as you can before leaving

Make sure you have as much done as possible at work before leaving the office for your vacation. That means finishing up projects, delegating to co-workers, and reminding people well ahead of time that you will be gone. Set up out-of-office messages on your phone and email accounts, and tell people that issues will be addressed as soon as possible after you return. The last thing you want to do is come back from a lazy vacation to a bunch a fires that need to be put out. The same goes for your home life, too. Don't leave anything until your return that can be dealt with before you leave. From chores to bills, the less you have to deal with, the smoother your transition will be. 3. Organize your home for the return

Before you leave, you're excited, energetic, and ready to take on the world. You have that pre-vacation buzz. But coming back home, that person is gone. In their place, is someone worn out from travel. Do your tired self a favor before you leave, and get the house ready. Clean as much as you can. Do the laundry. Make the beds. Get all the dishes cleaned and put away. Coming home to a disorganized home will just add to your stress. Coming home to something clean and tidy, with a pristine bed ready to be slept in will make you feel so much better.

4. Prepare yourself before you come home

This is important. A lot of people have this attitude of "I'm not even thinking about that until I'm back from vacation." To be fair, a vacation is time away from the stresses and strains of everyday life, so bringing them with you may seem futile. But if you work out daily, and have been giving yourself a break, get in a workout at the hotel. If you were putting off thinking about grocery shopping, or bills that need paying, start to prepare a list on the flight home. 5. Ease into the daily grind gradually

When you get back home, you can be tempted to dive right back into the chores and routines that you wanted to leave behind for a week or two. Instead, make a list of the items you need to address, and which ones are important versus which ones can wait. Do you really have to do three loads of laundry on the first night home? Why not just unpack a few essentials, order some takeout, and relax with a movie or TV show for the night? Don't put undue pressure on yourself to stop the vacation the second you open the front door. A few days of gentle transition will really help.

6. Take some time to go over photos and memories

It used to take hours, or days, to get the photos of your trip developed at the local photo kiosk. These days, you have your entire collection of photographs instantly on hand, and ready to be screened on the 50-inch TV in the family room. The day after you get back, make a point of going through the great memories of your vacation. Prepare a few snacks and drinks, and flip through your photos leisurely. Don't rush it. If there are friends and family around, share your experiences. What was funny? What sucked in the moment, but can be laughed about now? This is all part of the process of truly enjoying the vacation after the fact.

7. Bring some of the vacation back with you

Just because you're no longer on vacation doesn't mean you can't do some of the things you did while you were away. Did you visit a place that served up wonderful local cuisine? Try to recreate it at home. If there was a certain kind of music that you listened to on your adventures, look it up and make a playlist. Smells are important, too. You can find candles and oils in thousands of different scents. When you're in the bathtub, sipping the same wine or beer you had on vacation, listening to the same sounds, smelling the same smells … it's like a transporter beam back to the holiday you just had.

8. Don't forget the souvenirs

Just like photographs, souvenirs can be wonderful reminders of the good times you had on your vacation. Most of the time, we buy goodies for our family and friends, but don't think about ourselves. Make a point of bringing something small, but meaningful, home from your vacation just for you. It doesn't have to cost a lot; it could even be a shell from the beach, or a trinket from a tourist shop. Put it on display on your desk at work, or on the nightstand. Every time you see it, it will bring back great memories for you.

9. Start planning your next vacation soon

After a few days, start looking forward to your next vacation. It may be a few months away, or the same time next year, but beginning the planning process now can take the sting out of returning from a well-earned break. Do you want to go back to the same place again? Do you want to venture to a different place? Or do something really out of the box? Just by thinking about it, you get back into that excited state you were in before your vacation started. And it also gives you plenty of time to save for the vacation.

Cruising has long been considered an affordable vacation option for couples, groups, and families. With cruise ports dotted across the country, if you live near a coastline, you could probably drive to your departure port and save money on airfare. And with your food and entertainment included in the cruise fare itself, the bulk of your vacation expenditures are paid for upfront.

Once you pay for your cruise, plus applicable taxes and port fees, you'll have little else to cover other than transportation, tips, alcohol, and cruise stop excursions.

Of course, creative cruisers have been saving in other ways for years. With some out-of-the-box thinking, there are numerous ways to save on common cruise "extras" or avoid them completely.

1. Book when "kids cruise free"

With onboard kids' clubs, pools, water parks, and endless family-friendly activities to choose from, most cruises are ideal for families with kids.

Still, you may be able to save even more if you book a cruise where "kids cruise free." Believe it or not, some of the most affordable cruise lines for families waive cruise fare for kids on at least some sailings. For example, MSC Cruises has the most enticing offer, which is year-round. On many of their Caribbean cruises, children ages 11 and under cruise free with paid adults.

Keep in mind, however, that even "free" kid cruises require the payment of government-mandated taxes and port fees for your stowaways.

2. Save up to 82 percent on last-minute cruises

While many people plan their cruise vacations far ahead of time, you can save a bundle if you wait until the last minute. A website called VacationstoGo.com promises up to 82 percent off unsold cruises that depart within 90 days.

At the moment, you can score a six-night Alaskan cruise on Norwegian for as little as $449, or a four-night Caribbean cruise on Carnival for as little as $224 per person. A seven-night French Polynesia cruise on Paul Gauguin that retails for $7,000 per person can be had for $2,499 per head on certain dates.

Keep in mind, however, that the lowest discount fares usually apply to interior rooms and may not include taxes and port fees.

3. Save with cruise-friendly rewards credit cards

An array of rewards credit cards let you earn points redeemable for any cruise of your choosing. Most of the best travel credit cards offer this option, especially flexible cards.

Carnival and several other cruise lines offer their own co-branded credit card with a sign-up bonus and ongoing earning potential, as well. If you want to save money, it helps to check out the best credit cards for cruises ahead of time.

4. Bring your own booze

While cruises include food, snacks, entertainment, and some drinks, most don't include alcohol in their regular cruise fares. Unfortunately, onboard drinks are notoriously expensive, and they can really add up if you don't watch it.

The good news is, you may be able to bring your own booze on board — specifically wine. Each cruise line has its own policy. For example, Carnival lets you bring up to one bottle of wine per person in your luggage on embarkation day.

5. Book your own excursions

Cruises are interesting because they let you visit multiple destinations with a diverse offering of activities. On the flip side, "excursions" are not generally included in cruise fare and can be expensive on their own. Sometimes excursions can cost as much as the cruise itself!

Most of the time, you can avoid cruise ship markup by booking excursions yourself. Imagine your Carnival cruise stops in Aruba and you want to go snorkeling in the crystal clear waters. You could book Aruba's Dushi Sail & Snorkel excursion with lunch through Carnival for $89.99 per adult, or you could book directly with the operator for $61 per adult.

Websites like Viator.com are especially helpful when it comes to booking shore excursions at a discount.

6. Skip the excursions

Most cruise stops offer free stuff to do in addition to paid shore excursions. If you're creative and flexible, you can enjoy each port without paying an arm and a leg.

Most beach destinations have free public beaches, and other stops let you sightsee or visit parks for free. Cruise critic forums are a great place to get ideas for free stuff to do. You can also gain insights on local bus routes that will take you away from the port and off the beaten path for cheap.

7. Get your status matched

Cruise "status" works a lot like hotel or airline status. If you cruise with the same cruise line often enough, you can eventually earn status upgrades good for cruise discounts, room upgrades, early boarding, and additional perks.

But, what if you're tired of cruising with the same company over and over? While it's not well known, cruise lines will occasionally "match" your status to earn your business. MSC Cruises does this all year long, and will match your cruise or even your hotel status to earn your business.

8. Book a repositioning cruise

When cruise lines need to move their ships from one place to another during seasonal changes, rather than sending an empty cruise ship, they will often offer a repositioning cruise at a steep discount. These one-way journeys — say, from Alaska to Hawaii — may offer a few stops in the early part of the trip, but otherwise, you are at sea for much of the time. You can still enjoy the sea views and take advantage of onboard activities.

You can shop for repositioning cruises on any cruise website, and on discount travel websites like Expedia and Travelocity. You can also scoop even lower fares on repositioning cruises through VacationtoGo.com.

9. Get a credit card with no foreign transaction fees

Cruising to multiple international destinations sounds like a lot of fun, and using your credit card is usually the best way to get around without exchanging currency. Unfortunately, many cards charge a foreign transaction fee that tacks an extra 3 percent onto everything you buy.

You can get around these extra charges by signing up for a credit card with no foreign transaction fees before your cruise. Some cards that fall into this category have rewards programs that make them even more valuable, and/or come without annual fees, too.

10. Turn cruise gift cards into discounts

If you're into credit card rewards and have your heart set on a specific cruise, it can pay to combine both goals into one. By purchasing gift cards for your favorite cruise line with your rewards card, you can earn more rewards over time, even using them to offset the cost of your cruise if you want. Check your credit card rewards portal to see if it offers cruise gift cards as redemption options for your points. Otherwise, use your favorite rewards credit card to purchase them.

8 Money Lessons I Learned From Three Weeks in Europe

In early June, my husband and I took a bucket list trip to Europe with our kids. While we've visited countless countries worldwide as a couple, this was our first "big trip" with our daughters, ages six and eight. In addition to the four of us, we took a family caregiver to help with the kids and give Mom and Dad a break. Over the course of 19 days, we spent time in Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. The entire ordeal was exhausting, but it was an absolute blast!

Fortunately, we planned far enough ahead that we didn't spend too much out of pocket while we were there. By leveraging travel rewards credit cards and setting a daily spending budget, we were able to get the entire trip, which would normally cost $20,000 retail, for around $3,500. In addition to the virtues of planning ahead as a savings strategy, we learned numerous financial lessons during our travels. While we were aware of most of these lessons already, seeing the world through our children's eyes served as the perfect reminder of the reasons behind some of our most important financial decisions.

Here are a few lessons we relearned thanks to our trip abroad.

1. Failing to plan means planning to fail

One of the most expensive components of our trip was dining, mostly because there were five people in our group. No matter how cheaply you try to eat, feeding five people three meals a day means your food budget adds up quickly.

While we tried to minimize our food costs by eating breakfast in our condo and searching for budget options, there were times where we didn't plan ahead and paid a steep price for our lack of preparation.

One meal in particular stands out. We traveled by train to Rome in the morning and arrived in early afternoon without researching restaurants or stores in the immediate area. In a tired and hungry daze, we entered the first restaurant we walked past near Piazza Navona.

Unfortunately, we paid big time for this oversight. Not only was the food overly touristy (pictures on the menu — blech), but our lunch set us back nearly $90. If we had searched ahead of time, we would have known we could have found much cheaper (and probably tastier) options had we walked a block in the other direction. 2. Expensive does not equal better

That meal also served as a reminder that expensive isn't always better. We paid $90 for a lunch that was mediocre at best on that particular day, but at other times we enjoyed meals that were absolutely delicious and downright cheap.

One that comes to mind was a meal we had in nearby Florence, Italy. In order to keep our food budget under control, we started researching local restaurants once we arrived. Eventually, we stumbled upon a sandwich shop — Panini Toscani — that was uber-cheap but was also the third highest rated restaurant in Florence.

We wound up eating there twice. The food was delicious and convenient, and our total meal for five people was less than $20 both times.

3. Even budget trips can be fun

By the time we got to Switzerland (our last stop), I was pretty tired of spending money in general. So, when we had our final "free day" in the country, I spent some time looking for something fun and affordable to do. (See also: 7 Countries Where You Can Travel on $30 a Day or Less)

Eventually, I remembered a town we drove by that had the most beautiful, clear-green lake I had ever seen. After looking up the details, I found that the tiny village of Lungern had a public beach and a few waterslides with a daily admission cost of about $5.25 per adult.

This relatively cheap day was probably the most fun we had. All of us swam and rode waterslides the entire day, stopping only to have a low-cost lunch.

It just goes to show that budget travel can absolutely be fun, and that you don't have to spend a ton of money to enjoy yourself.

4. There's more than one "right way" to do things

One of the most rewarding components of travel is watching my kids react to the many ways other countries handle things differently. My kids were obsessed with euros, for example. They couldn't understand why anyone would choose to offer two euros in the form of a coin.

I also had to explain why we didn't tip as much as we normally do. Since workers in Europe are paid higher wages, you don't have to tip 15–20 percent like you do in the states.

While we could argue all day over which way is better, I told my kids there is more than one "right way" to do things sometimes. (See also: 7 Countries Where You Don't Have to Tip at Restaurants)

5. We actually need very little

While I wasn't sure we could pull it off, we made it through the entire trip with just carry-on luggage and two school-sized backpacks of stuff. It helped that one of our condos had a washing machine, but I was still amazed we enjoyed ourselves without many comforts from home.

This just goes to show that most of us don't need a lot to be happy. We need clothes, food, and shelter, but everything else is optional. We can be happy and content without having a bunch of stuff to bog us down.

6. Most people are honest, but not everyone

Most of the people we dealt with abroad were both kind and honest — except for a couple of small incidences. First, we encountered a taxi driver who tried to charge us $28 (instead of running his meter) to take us four blocks in Rome. Not only was this outrageous since we'd paid $7 for the same ride earlier that day, but it was illegal for him to do this since the city of Rome regulates official taxis.

Second, when we got home from the trip, we received a fraud alert from Chase. Apparently, someone had swiped our card information and tried to make a purchase in Peru.

This kind of stuff happens no matter where you are, so it's important to always stay vigilant. (See also: 7 Ways to Protect Yourself From Theft While Traveling)

7. Exchange rates matter

Whenever I travel abroad, I almost always struggle to keep track of the currency exchange rate and how it affects everything we buy. But, since a single U.S. dollar is currently worth just .87 euros, this is an important detail to keep in mind. If something costs 10 euros, for example, you're actually paying $11.55.

While I used a credit card with no foreign transaction fees to pay most of our expenses, I tried hard to impart this lesson on our kids. No matter where you are in the world, chances are good the money isn't worth the same as at home. And, if you don't pay attention, you could wind up spending a lot more than you think!

8. Some experiences are worth the money, even if they're expensive

While we definitely saved a bundle on this trip due to the way we leveraged credit card rewards, we still spent $3,500 of our hard-earned dollars. On top of that, I probably spent 30–50 hours planning not only our credit card rewards strategy, but our hotels, flights, and trains.

The thing is, I don't regret a single cent — or a single second. Over my lifetime, I've learned that some experiences are worth the money and the time, even if it seems like a lot.

It's hard to put a price tag on a fun family trip that exposed us to cultures in a completely different part of the world. I believe it was priceless. Some memories are worth saving up to splurge on. (See also: How to Build Your Best Travel Budget)

5 Times Splurging on Experiences Is a Bad Idea

If you're a regular reader of Wise Bread, you know that we encourage you to spend your money on experiences rather than material things. You will be happier if you make great memories, rather than stockpiling great electronics, clothes, shoes, watches, and jewelry. But there are two sides to every story. And sometimes, these experiences are just not worth the splurge.

1. Exotic destination weddings

We've all received those wedding invitations that, at first, seem like a dream come true. We picture ourselves tanning on a beach in Hawaii or Jamaica with a cocktail and a smile. But that's usually not the case. Destination weddings don't give you a lot of time to yourself. You are there for the bride and groom. It's their big day, they've spent a lot of money on it. You'll be expected to go to rehearsals, receptions, and other parties. You may well have to hang out with a bunch of people you don't know or even like all that much. And to top it all off, you're paying through the nose to go on this trip. It will likely cost thousands. You might make some good memories from it, but this isn't the same as a vacation on your own terms. (See also: 6 Ways to Resist a Splurge)

2. Tickets to the Super Bowl

Blasphemy, right?! Well, not really. When it comes down to it, a trip to the Super Bowl is a great experience if you can get it for the right price. But if you're buying the tickets through the secondary market, or even worse, getting an "On Location Experience," you are going to be spending a small fortune. SeatGeek.com states that the average price of a Super Bowl 52 ticket will be between $2,500 and $3,000. For those On Location Experiences, you're looking at between $6,000 to $12,000. Up to $12,000 to see a football game. Now, think about the experience you're going to have for that money. You're there, in the stadium, but most of the time you're actually watching the action on the big screen projection. You're paying an arm and a leg for food and drinks. You also had to pay to get to the Super Bowl and stay in a hotel, unless you're lucky enough to live in that city. (See also: How One Man Used Credit Card Rewards to Go to the Last 11 Super Bowls)

What else could you do with that money? How about two weeks in Europe? Or Japan? Or paying down debt? Wouldn't that be a better use of your money? Forget the Super Bowl experience, and watch it on a big screen at home with your friends and family.

3. Extremely high-priced restaurants

There are some restaurant experiences that balance good food with a reasonable check at the end of the meal. And there are others that just blow the budget completely out of the water. You may be thinking that once, just once, you want to spend a whole lot of money on an amazing meal … just to experience it. Well, honestly, you will not be getting your money's worth. For example, Sublimotion in Spain charges over $2,000 per person for a series of 15-20 small courses. It gets exceptional reviews of course, but $2,000 for a meal is just an absurd waste of your cash, and you will find stunning food in your area for way, way less money. 4. A trip on the Orient Express

I mean, it's a train. It may be the most famous train the world, but is it worth the cost to ride? If you were to book a cabin suite from Paris to Istanbul, the cost is almost $16,000! If you instead opt for a double or single room, it's still up there at around $8,000! And what do you get for that? Honestly, not all that much. Some nice food, some fancy service, and nice views.

However, if you purchase a First Class InterRail ticket for the same journey, with the same views, you will only be out of pocket around $400 per person. Don't bother with the Orient Express. It's overpriced and underwhelming, and includes a lot of wood paneling and polished brass.

5. The big fight

Despite the phenomenal rise in popularity of UFC, world-class boxing matches still command massive audiences. And it seems massively inflated ticket prices, too. In 2015, Forbes reported that the Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Manny Pacquiao fight had ticket prices so incredible they broke records. As hard as it is to believe, some tickets went on sale for upward of $350,000! That's right, over a quarter of a million dollars, for a fight that many thought did not come close to living up to the title of "Fight of the Century." If you're thinking, Well, yeah, but most tickets didn't cost anywhere near that price, then you're right. The worst seats in the house were being sold for over $3,500 per ticket. And that would have gotten you on the upper level with a view that left a lot to be desired. People were spending upward of $150 to attend the weigh-in for that fight! And these fights will continue to garner a lot of attention, and ask for grossly-inflated sums of money. Watch it on Pay-Per-View if you really want to see it, and split the cost with your friends.

Why Timing Is Everything When Saving Money on Travel

Nearly half of Americans say they won't be taking a vacation this summer, according to a poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The top reason: cost, named by 49 percent of those who'll be staying home.

Traveling in low season may just be the answer to this nation without vacation conundrum. By traveling outside of summer and public holidays, or by going abroad during the less popular times of year, you can save a considerable amount of money on your total travel bill. Here's how.

First of all, what is peak season?

Typically peak season refers to the time of year when the most tourists (foreign or local or both), descend upon a popular travel destination. In many countries, peak season falls around Christmas, New Year's, Easter, and over some summer holidays.

The exact dates of peak season will depend on where you're traveling to, what festivals are on, and what the majority religion is in the country. For example, Easter is extremely busy in the Philippines, while there isn't much rise in tourism in Muslim countries during the Christian holiday.

Similarly, Brazil is extremely busy during Carnival in February, but the date of Carnival is different in many South American countries and it's different on Caribbean islands as well. It's best to do a bit of research to find out exactly when "offseason" happens in your selected destination.

Pros and cons of offseason travel

Of course, there are a few cons to offseason travel or everyone would travel then, so it's important to cover those here. While many people might worry that they'd be constantly drenched if they travel during rainy season, that's often not the case. In many places, heavy rainfall does occur in the off-peak months, but typically it falls for an hour or so and then goes away.

If you're really worried about weather, you may consider traveling in the "shoulder season," which is a good middle ground between high season and low season. (See also: Best Times of Year to Travel Anywhere)

Pros of low-season travel:

Cheaper prices.
Fewer travelers.
Some great local festivals happen in the offseason.

Cons:

May not be optimal weather.
Some sights and hotels may be closed.

How to save on accommodations

Hotels, hostels, B&Bs, and vacation rental apartments all tend to jack up their prices during the most desirable travel periods. Take, for example, a three-bedroom home listed on Airbnb in Manzanillo, Mexico. If you book this particular apartment in July, when it's not peak season, it's only $166 a night, while the same apartment booked over Christmas this year will run you $330 a night!

This isn't just on Airbnb, either. I've personally been traveling over the Christmas season for nearly eight years straight and I've always had a hard time finding accommodation deals for that time period. Typically I end up spending at least 50 percent more, simply because I'm getting close to Christmas. (See also: 10 Surprising Ways to Save Money on Hotels)

How to save on flights

We all know that hotels aren't the only ones jacking up their prices during the holiday and peak seasons. Airlines have been doing this for years. According to a study by CheapAir.com:

"Over the course of the entire holiday booking period, travelers paid an average 50 percent more for a flight during the holidays than for the same flight during a non-holiday time. That means a $300 ticket during off-peak time cost $450 during the holidays."

That's no joke! I've personally paid as much as 60 percent more on my airfare, simply because I was flying during a public holiday or during a festival. Traveling in the offseason could save you a lot of money on your airfare. (See also: 10 Flight Booking Hacks to Save You Hundreds)

How to save on food

Believe it or not, even restaurants give discounts in the offseason. I have been in some towns where nearly every restaurant offers a "local discount" during the offseason because there are so few tourists that it is the only way they can make money during the slower months.

During a trip to Thailand in 2014, I watched many restaurants on Railay Beach change their menus over to get ready for the peak season. All of the prices I had come to know (and love) suddenly went up by as much as 20 percent. As peak season starts, many restaurants will hike up their prices, so traveling off-peak can save you money on food as well! (See also: How to Eat Street Food Safely While Traveling)

Offseason is a fine season for travel

When I first started traveling frequently back in 2008, I was always checking the weather to make sure that I was planning my trip for the perfect time of the year. The only problem with that theory was that everyone and their dog had the same idea and my trips cost me a lot more than they had to.

Today I use the offseason or the shoulder season as much as I can and I'm able to travel for far less. So can you. Next time you plan a holiday, consider going when fewer others do. The amount you save could mean that you can go on a longer trip, or maybe budget in another holiday throughout the year.
