Not only do parents need to line up (and pay for) alternate child care for the kids during the summer months, but they also have to worry about Junior and Sis spending their allowances on Dilly bars and Star Wars sunglasses that break immediately, only to ask for more money to go to the movies every weekend.

That's why summer is a perfect opportunity to teach your kids about money management. Not only will these money moves help to improve your kids' money skills, but it will also help them to retain the math and reading skills they might not otherwise be practicing while school is out.

Here are five great money activities your kids can enjoy this summer vacation.

1. Lemonade stand

There's a reason why this classic introduction to entrepreneurship is a perennial favorite. Encouraging your kids to set up a lemonade stand gives them an opportunity to think about all the aspects of making a business successful, including venue, startup costs, pricing, advertisement, and signage.

Your kids will learn all sorts of important lessons about economics through this summer project. For instance, they can charge a higher price for homemade lemonade made from real lemons as compared to lemonade mixed from a powder — but they have to do more work to make the more expensive product. Is the increased price worth the increased work for these budding business owners?

In addition, your kids can learn that choosing a popular spot on a hot day will increase their sales, as opposed to setting up shop on a quiet street on a cooler day.

The one caveat about lemonade stands is the potential legal aspect of this kind of business. There are laws in many parts of the country that prohibit these kinds of sidewalk businesses without a permit, even when such businesses are run by adorable 10-year-olds. Help your child research the local laws before she sets up shop.

2. Investment club

Have your older kids form an investment club together. This club will invest a hypothetical $1,000 in whatever stocks the kids decide on together. Encourage them to choose stocks from companies that they already have a relationship with, like McDonald's, Facebook, Disney, Coca-Cola, Nike, Apple, or Microsoft. Remind them of what Warren Buffett says: Invest in what you understand. Their understanding of these brands will make them better investors than if they try to just pick something they are unfamiliar with.

Once they have "invested" their money, ask them to provide a weekly report on how their investments are doing. They will need to track the prices of their stocks and record those prices, which means they will learn how to look up stock information online. They can even make charts plotting the movement of their stock choices, so that they can have a good visualization of what their money is doing.

This project will help to encourage them to think of investing as something that anyone can do, even a kid, and can get them excited about potentially investing some of their real allowance money rather than spending it on Legos. (See also: 10 Investing Lessons You Must Teach Your Kids)

3. Grocery store math

When you take your child with you to the grocery store, put him in charge of keeping track of how much you have spent. For each item that you place in the cart, ask your child to write down the cost, which he will add to a running tally. Not only will this help him practice his math skills, but it will also give him an opportunity to do price comparisons, learn how pricing works for loose items like produce, and offer you a chance to talk about sales tax and how that affects your total at the cash register. (See also: 6 Fun Games That Teach Your Kids About Money)

4. Create a practice budget

One way of doing a practice budget is with a toy catalog. If you can't find one in print, check online, as many retailers upload versions of their toy catalog digitally. Tell your kids they have $50 to "spend" in the catalog, and let them go through the pages circling or noting what they are interested in. Then, ask them to add up the costs of all the items they circled to see if they stayed within their budget. Depending on the age of your kids, this can be a tough exercise, since they may be overwhelmed with how much they want.

For younger kids, another practice budget exercise is to take them to a dollar store and give them $5 each to spend. While they will be able to pick out at least a few items each, they will need to do some important thinking about which things they want most. This will help them understand opportunity cost — buying one item means you have less money available to buy a different item.

Similarly, if you have an older kid who loves video games that offer in-app purchase upgrades, ask them to list the cost of all the upgrades they want. These types of purchases tend to be low dollar amounts, but they add up quickly — and asking your kid to do the math on how much all of the character upgrades will cost can be very eye-opening. (See also: How to Help Your Kid Build Their First Budget)

5. Save up for a trip to a theme park

Going to an amusement park is a great family outing, but such day trips can be expensive. Between the price of tickets, the cost for things like ride photos and other souvenirs, extras like face painting, and the high markup on food, a family can drop quite a lot of money in a single day at a theme park.

Have your kids plan the budget for your trip to their favorite amusement park. Ask them to research how much entrance tickets cost and if there are ways to lower those costs. For instance, there are often reduced rates for purchasing tickets online as compared to at the gate, and amusement parks will often pair up with major retailers or brands to offer promo codes to reduce rates even further.

Let the kids know how much of the trip you will pay for, and ask them to cover any extras. For instance, you might offer to pay for half the cost of the admission, and will help them pack food for the trip. The kids will have to cover the rest of the admission price, as well as any extras or food purchased on site. This will help them figure out the best ways to budget, and determine whether having Dippin' Dots or a souvenir from the park is more important to them. These fun activities will ensure they go back to school in the fall with a clearer understanding of economics, budgeting, wants versus needs, and money management.

Like this article? Backpacking is a wonderful way to discover the scenery and drama that can be found within our nation's parks — with landscapes ranging from craggy peaks to remote island getaways. Here are five breathtaking multiday hikes to do in national parks this summer. (See also: 10 Most Breathtaking Day Hikes in the U.S.)

1. Teton Crest Trail in Grand Teton National Park

The Grand Teton National Park's popularity is far overshadowed by its more famous neighbor, Yellowstone National Park, which lies just a few miles north. However, the hiking routes in Grand Teton National Park, including the Teton Crest Trail, are regarded by many travel publications as the best anywhere in the country. Not only is the scenery breathtaking, but you can also expect to see a variety of wildlife, with wolves, moose, elk, black and grizzly bears all sighted frequently.

There are numerous trailheads that join the Teton Crest Trail at various points, including Granite Canyon, Cascade Canyon, or Paintbrush Canyon. This means distances and difficulty can differ, with some sections even requiring the use of an ice ax before August. Whichever route you choose, you're in for a wild ride, as the Teton Crest Trail covers many of the park's ridges. From these vantage points, you'll get spectacular panoramic views of granite peaks, vast canyons, and vibrant meadows packed full of colorful summer blossoms.

Difficulty: Medium to hard

Distance: 35-45 miles dependent on route

Days to Complete: 4-7

Permit Information: Permits are required for any overnight trip in the Grand Teton National Park and can be extremely competitive to secure. You can only apply in advance for backcountry reservations for the summer season between the first Wednesday in January and May 15 via the Recreation.gov site with a $45 processing fee. There are walk-in permits available one day before the start of a backcountry trip for $25, but these are on a first-come-first-serve basis, so it pays to have a plan B if you choose this option.

2. Wonderland Trail in Mount Rainier National Park

The incomparable Mount Rainier is truly an awesome sight. Rising up to a dizzying 14,410 feet above sea level, Mount Rainier is actually an active volcano. And the snow-capped peak of Emmons Glacier has the largest surface area than any other glacier in the 48 contiguous states. Note, however, that it may be very difficult to get a reservation for the 2018 season.

The Wonderland Trail circumnavigates the entirety of this iconic mountain, so you'll have it in your sights for the whole hike. But while there are continuous views of Mount Rainier, this is the only constant to expect along the way. The scenery changes and shifts at every turn, with the path made up of ascents up to ridges followed by descents into valleys, repeatedly revealing new backdrops. Rivers, lakes, glaciers, alpine meadows, lowland forests, and waterfalls appear as if from nowhere and the sunrises and sunsets which give the mountain and surrounding scenery a pink and red hue are simply stunning.

Difficulty: Hard

Distance: 93 miles

Days to Complete: 10-14, according to the National Park Service

Permit Required: A wilderness permit is necessary for all overnight stays in Mount Rainier National Park, and you must also book all of your campsites in advance. This means that you need to plan your route carefully according to your fitness levels and allocated time. Reservations are extremely competitive and a $20 reservation fee is charged regardless of whether your application is granted or not. Applications are open from March 15 until they are all gone. There are walk-in permits available, but these are difficult to make work due to the campsite booking requirement. (See also: 7 Best Free Treks in the World)

3. Half Dome Hike in Yosemite National Park

The Half Dome Hike is a full-on adventure that will allow you to scale well over 8,000 feet. Not only do you reach knee-knocking altitudes, but the final portion of the ascent is up the infamous Half Dome Cables, which enable you to scale the steep cliff face. As if this isn't enough excitement, the views of the park from the peak are astonishing.

The hike up Half Dome itself can be completed in a single session, so the bulk of the work will need to be done on the second day, lasting anywhere up to 14 hours. However, by turning it into a two-day hike, you get a nice walk to the Little Yosemite Valley campground on day one, which takes you past the wonderful Vernal and Nevada waterfalls.

Difficulty: Hard

Distance: 16 miles

Days to Complete: 2

Permit Required: You will need to apply for a half dome permit with your wilderness permit in order to do the two-day hike. These are in short supply, with only 300 permits in total being issued for each day and only 75 of these to overnight backpackers. Fifty of these are allotted by reservation via a lottery system which you can apply for up to 169 days in advance, with the other 25 available a day in advance on a first-come-first-serve basis. Confirmed reservations cost $5 plus $5 per person in the group. Greenstone Ridge Trail in Isle Royale National Park

The only way to reach Isle Royale is by boat or seaplane, and on the island itself there are no roads and no wheeled vehicles allowed. Located in the colossal Lake Superior, Isle Royale is truly one of the most remote national parks in the U.S., making it the perfect place to escape from it all. Generally hikers walk east to west and pick up a return ferry at the end of their journey.

The 42-mile Greenstone Ridge Trail runs the entire length of the island, allowing you to get the full effect of the tranquillity this hideaway provides. The forested ridge runs like a backbone through the heart of the island, with the elevation giving you great views along the way of the island as well as the surrounding lake. There are significant populations of gray wolves and moose, and while sightings aren't extremely common, it's a brilliant place to look out for them.

Difficulty: Easy to medium

Distance: 42 miles

Days to Complete: 3 to 5

Permit Required: Entrance to the park costs $7 per person per day, and permits are necessary for all multiday hikes, though they are free of charge. The parkrun ferry to the island costs $70 per person one-way during the peak summer months and should be reserved in advance.

5. Redwood Creek Trail in Redwood National Park

Redwood National Park is most noted for containing the tallest trees on the planet, so the appeal to walking among these ancient giants is clear.

The full out and back hike from the Redwood Creek trailhead runs along a number of moderate ridges that skirt the creek. Though there are few old redwoods along this particular trail, you will get to gaze upon miles of untouched forest. There's dispersed camping allowed along the six miles of the creekbed.

The typical second day activity is to search for the world's tallest tree, the 379-foot Hyperion in the Tall Trees Grove, although your chances of finding it are probably slim. The tree is not officially marked for protection reasons and any available information is contradictory at best. However, the rest of the remarkable forest should help to counter any lingering disappointment on your route back.

Difficulty: Easy

Distance: 16 miles

Days to Complete: 2

Permit Required: Redwood National Park is free to visit, but even though it’s free, permits are still required for any overnight stays in backcountry camps. Campsites have a fee of $35 per night and should be booked in advance, particularly during the peak summer months.

Like this article? Here are the best cheap experiences to have in national parks this summer. Wild hot tubbing in Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone is famous for being the world's first national park, but is perhaps best known for its enormous spouting geysers and vast, colorful hot springs. While these features are incredible to look at, they are, in fact, extremely dangerous, with unwitting visitors regularly suffering burns or worse from underestimating their boiling temperatures — which can top 250 degrees.

There are, however, some spots within the park where you're able to safely experience this geothermal phenomenon by taking a dip in the warm waters. Yellowstone's "Boiling River" is formed by the flow from a hot spring merging with the cool waters of the Gardner River. Despite its name, the balmy temperatures are perfect for swimming and relaxing while taking in the scenic surroundings.

It's relatively easy to reach each one by car with a short walk from the designated parking area with detailed directions included on Yellowstone’s website. There's no specific date when Boiling River opens to bathers, as it depends on the levels of the river, but it's generally accessible during daylight hours in the winter, fall, and late summer. While Yellowstone National Park charges an entrance fee, a plunge in Boiling River has no cost attached, so get your swimsuit ready for a unique hot-tubbing adventure. Snorkel Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas National Park in the Florida Keys is one of the most interesting national parks in the U.S. Despite its name, it only contains seven small islands, with the majority of the Dry Tortugas — the islands — being made up of water. The area is well known for its abundance of colorful coral and varied marine life, as well as numerous shipwrecks, making it a world class destination for snorkeling and kayaking.

One of the best locations for snorkeling is around the unfinished Fort Jefferson. The military fortress was built to protect a strategic deepwater anchorage and a lucrative shipping lane in the Gulf of Mexico. Over time, the fort was used as a prison and a coaling station for warships, but it is now abandoned and part of the Dry Tortugas National Park.

Entrance to the park is $15 per person, however there are only three ways to reach it. The first is by private boat, the second by seaplane, and the third and most popular, via the official partner ferry Yankee Freedom III. The ferry prices are $180 per adult, and $125 per child (ages 4-16) however, included in the cost are breakfast and lunch, guided tours of the fort, as well as complimentary snorkeling equipment. To get even more value out of the trip, you can also camp for $15 per night, but keep in mind you will need to take everything you require with you. Stargazing at Great Basin National Park

The Great Basin National Park lies between two mountain ranges, the Sierra Nevada and the Wasatch, occupying a dry and craggy region of pure, unadulterated wilderness. Though it's just a few hours north of the bright lights of Las Vegas, this area boasts one of the darkest skies in the U.S. In fact, they're so dark that the park has been designated an International Dark Sky Park, recognizing this characteristic.

Thanks to these extraordinarily dark skies, the potential for stargazing is virtually unrivaled. At night it's possible to see thousands of stars and star clusters, meteors, satellites, and even five out of the eight planets in our solar system.

The Great Basin National Park runs numerous astronomy-related activities, many of which are free, including an astronomy program, full moon hikes, and solar telescope viewings. There's also an annual Astronomy Festival which takes place in September consisting of talks, viewings, and many more fun activities suitable for all ages. The Great Basin National Park has no entrance fee, making it a fabulous choice to enjoy a bargain outing over the summer. Sandboarding in Great Sand Dunes National Park

Named after the vast sand mountains that punctuate its landscape, the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado is one of a kind. Some of the dunes reach over 750 feet and the dune field totals over 30 square miles, but thanks to the winds, it's a continually changing landscape, so it will be different each time you visit.

If you love being active and trying your hand at recreational sports, then why not grab a board and head to the dunes? There are several areas in the dunefields that are suitable for sandboarding or sledding, and they include both steep and long routes as well as shorter and gentle slopes suitable for all abilities.

Be sure to take the right equipment, as sandboarding can be a dangerous activity without the proper gear. This should include a board or sled specifically designed for the sand, and it's also smart to wear safety gear like a helmet and goggles. The national park does not rent or sell gear, but there are three retailers in the San Luis Valley recommended on their site that do. A seven-day pass to the park for a noncommercial vehicle and its occupants costs $20, and sandboard or sled rentals cost around $18 per day.

5. Caving in Mammoth Cave National Park

Kentucky's Mammoth Cave National Park is home to an extensive network of caves, subterranean passages, and chambers that make up the longest known cave system in the world. This labyrinth of underground passages has over 300 miles of mapped routes, with many more miles currently uncharted.

If you want to discover a slice of the world beneath your feet and learn to tell your stalagmites from your stalactites, then caving in Mammoth Cave National Park is the perfect place to do it. Over the summer they have a dedicated summer program that includes ranger-guided cave tours starting at just $14 that last up to six hours. They tend to sell out quite far in advance, so it's wise to book before going.

There's plenty more to do above ground as well, with picturesque river valleys and stunning forest trails being just some of the features found on the surface. Entrance to the park is free so all you'll need to pay for is your chosen tours and activities.

Like this article? Instead of wasting electricity, though, why not take a short break from the heat and head to one of these cool-weather summertime destinations?

Whether you're in for the adventure of a lifetime or a relaxing vacation on cool breezy beaches, we've got just the spot for you.

1. Newport, Oregon

If you love the ocean, you'll love Newport, Oregon. There are eight public beaches to explore, and you can even try your hand at catching your own dinner by renting or buying inexpensive crabbing or clamming equipment (you'll need to pay $19 for a three-day nonresident shellfish license, however). See sea otters and giant Pacific octopuses up-close at the Oregon Coast Aquarium ($22.50 admission fee for adults).

After a day exploring the ocean, you can check out one of the town's breweries (including Rogue Brewing, which is headquartered in Newport) and stay in a beachfront Airbnb for under $100. (See also: Best Travel Rewards Credit Cards)

2. Glacier National Park, Montana

What sounds better in the heat of the summer than visiting a glacier? You can do that in Glacier National Park, where it's all about the jaw-dropping views. Hiking is the best way to see these sights, and the park boasts over 700 miles of trails. You can also see the park from horseback, by taking a rafting tour, or via one of the historic red buses (the oldest touring buses in the world, in fact). The park also hosts dozens of Native American educational programs throughout the summer, and you can even ride a free shuttle along the park's famous Going-to-the-Sun Road.

There are several cities near Glacier National Park such as Whitefish and Kalispell where you can stay, but they start at around $200. Surprisingly, however, some of the lodges within the park itself are quite affordable, starting at $99 a night. Of course, since it's a national park, there are also plenty of cheap camping options ($10 to $23 per night) as well. (See also: 10 Most Breathtaking Day Hikes in the U.S.)

3. Muskoka Lakes, Ontario

Muskoka Lakes is a hidden gem with breathtaking waterways nestled among Ontario's dense northern forests. You can cool off on the water by renting a canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard, taking a pleasure cruise, or just going for a dip in the icy water itself. For foodies and art lovers, the town has a burgeoning craft brewery and arts scene. If you need to burn off some of those calories, you can do it by hiking through Muskoka Lakes' extensive trail network, which covers about 1,500 square miles.

The best part of all? A stay in a three-star hotel can cost as little as $85, and there are plenty of options for waterfront Airbnb cabins for $100 or less per night. (See also: 7 Affordable Destinations for Nature Lovers)

4. Finger Lakes, New York

This network of 11 long, spindly-shaped glacial lakes is another waterfront cottage lover's delight. For wine lovers, even better: There are around 130 wineries throughout this region. There's still plenty here for kids, as well: Seneca Lake State Park ($7 entrance fee per car) offers a sprayground with 100 jets of water, Bristol Mountain Aerial Adventures offers a kids park for $25, and Ganondagan State Park offers a full replica village of a Seneca Native American village ($8 for adults, up to $4 for kids).

There are dozens of cute lakeside and wooded Airbnb cottages to find here priced under $100 per night. (See also: 9 Travel Destinations for Introverts)

5. Mackinac Island, Michigan

Mackinac Island (pronounced "mack-in-aw") is a blast from the past. The entire island (which costs $24 per person to get to if you buy tickets online) is entirely nonmotorized, meaning that the only way to get anywhere is by walking, biking, or taking a horse-drawn carriage (even the taxis are pulled by horses). Make sure to check out the historic sites while there, like Fort Mackinac and Fort Holmes.

While there are a lot of expensive lodging options on the island (like the famous Grand Hotel; starting at $329 per person, per night), the Bogan Lane Inn, a historic 18th-century B&B, offers rooms from $105 per night.

6. Boundary Waters, Minnesota

Visiting the Boundary Waters is a different sort of summertime adventure. This remote wilderness area perched at the far northeastern end of Minnesota has no buildings, no motorized boats, and even planes don't fly over it. It's a true wilderness experience.

The way to get around the Boundary Waters is by canoe, and there are dozens of outfitters in the area that will rent you full packages, including a canoe, camping equipment, and all the food you need for less than $100 per person, per night. All you have to do is show up with strong arms for paddling, and strong legs for portaging a canoe overland as you hop between lakes. Camping is free at any of 2,200 individual campsites throughout the wilderness area, but you will need to pay a $10 reservation fee and purchase an entry permit ($16 per adult per trip).

Summertime temperatures in the Boundary Waters typically reach into the 70s (can you say, "cool?"), but remember to bring bug spray — the mosquitoes are legendary. San Juan Islands, Washington

Another cool-weather Canadian border-straddler, the San Juan Islands is an archipelago made up of 172 individual islands at the top of the Puget Sound. Yet, only four islands actually have ferry service ($19.85 per person for a ferry ride from Anacortes to the main San Juan Island).

Once you're there, there's plenty to do. Take a whale-watching boat tour (from $99 per person), visit a working shellfish farm, rent a sea kayak to hop between islands, or visit one of the island's many breweries, wineries, and artisanal farms. If you can't spot one of the island's many orcas, you can still learn about them in the island's Whale Museum ($9 admission).

The island offers several budget options for lodging. Stay on a working farm on a glamping vacation from $60 per night, go camping in one of the local parks starting from $21 per night, or stay in a small inn for around $125 —$160 per night. In fact, the United States is brimming with plenty of historical sites just waiting to be explored.

Many famous historical sites are in expensive places to visit, like Washington D.C. or New York. But there are plenty of amazing historical destinations that can fit anyone's budget. So break out your history books and let's go. (See also: Best Credit Cards for a Road Trip)

1. Williamsburg, Virginia

Williamsburg is without a doubt one of the best budget-friendly locations to get the most history bang for your buck. There's a bevy of various historical attractions to explore in the area, and you can find three-star hotel rooms for as low as $103 per night.

Historic Jamestown is the actual site of America's first English settlement, and costs $14 to visit. Jamestown Settlement admission is $17 and is a re-enactment of the actual colony, complete with three working full-size English sailing ships. A short 15-minute drive away leads you to the 18th-century recreation of Colonial Williamsburg (admission is quite a bit pricier at $40.99), while another 22-minute drive leads you to the Yorktown Battlefield, where America won the war for independence from Britain (a reasonable $7 admission). Mount Rushmore, South Dakota

When George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln became presidents of the United States, it's unlikely they ever thought their faces would be carved as giant sculptures in the side of a mountain in rural South Dakota. Yet, that's exactly what happened, and you can visit it today for free (although there is a $10 parking fee). The attraction also offers a wide range of free ranger-led programs, or you can rent an audio guide for $5.

Although you can't stay at Mount Rushmore itself, you do have several options for lodging. Nearby South Dakota cities you can stay at include Keystone (three miles away), Hill City (13 miles away), Custer (20 miles away), and Rapid City (24 miles away). You can expect to spend around $140 per night for a three-star hotel, although nearby Black Hills National Forest offers almost 700 campsites for $26 per night or less. You can also try dispersed camping in the National Forest for free as well. San Antonio, Texas

"Remember the Alamo!" is the famous battle cry that everyone can instantly recall, even if they don't exactly know why. Why not take the time to learn about the Alamo by visiting the very site of the influential battle for Texas. You can visit for free, but tickets to a guided tour are a reasonable $15. And because the Alamo is located in the heart of San Antonio, you'll be sure to find plenty of other attractions to visit while you're there.

Lodging in San Antonio is also very reasonable. You can expect to pay a mere $100 per night for three-star lodging. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

The famous Battle of Gettysburg is one of the most important points in the Civil War. It was when the Union soldiers finally turned back the Confederate soldiers, eventually winning the war and reunifying the country. Today, you can see the battlefield itself for free, although you do have the option of taking a two-hour bus tour with a guide for $35.

Lodging near Gettysburg can be expensive (around $150 per night or more). A more budget-friendly option is to book a spot at one of several campgrounds near the Gettysburg battlefield. If tenting and RVing isn't your thing, rest assured that you can still book cabins with solid walls for as little as around $100 per night. (See also: 7 Travel Hacks for an Affordable Summer Road Trip)

5. Oregon City, Oregon

If you grew up playing the cherished Oregon Trail computer game (or if you're even just a fan of Western history), you need to check out Oregon City. It's here where the first official Federal land office west of the Rocky Mountains was set up, attracting droves of settlers wishing to make a claim in what is now known as Oregon, Washington, Idaho, western Montana, and western Wyoming.

Admission to the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center is $13. There aren't a whole lot of options for lodging in the tiny city (it hasn't grown much since the days of the settlers), but you can stay at the Clackamas River House B&B for as little as $80, or one of several county-operated campgrounds for as little as $21.

6. Mackinaw City, Michigan

Mackinaw City is a beautiful town perched right on the Straits of Mackinac (still pronounced "Mack-in-aw," oddly enough) between Michigan's upper and lower peninsula. But what makes this tiny town really special is its proximity to several historic sites from the northern United State's colonial and frontier trapping days.

From here, you can visit historic Fort Mackinac (admission is $12 if purchased online). It's a former key military outpost on nearby Mackinac Island, and you'll need to purchase a ferry ticket ($24 if purchased online) to get here. Colonial Michilimackinac (pronounced "mish-il-uh-mack-in-aw"), located just across the straits from Mackinac Island on the mainland, is also full of interesting history and costs just $11.25 to visit if you buy your tickets online.

7. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Yellowstone National Park is a jaw-dropping place to visit in its own right. But did you know that this park also has a lot of historical significance in U.S. history? In fact, it's the first national park in the entire world, and it's credited with helping to launch the National Park Service as we know it today.

The best way to stay in Yellowstone is — you guessed it — by camping. (There are lodges in the park, but they are definitely not budget-friendly options, especially during the peak summer visiting season.) The park operates 12 different campgrounds with over 2,000 sites available for around $30 per night. Entrance into the park itself is $35 for a seven-day pass per vehicle. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is a true mélange of American history. From its roots as a French colony, to Spanish rule, to modern-day American influences, you can find tons of interesting historical tidbits hiding behind every corner in this city, and a small tour industry catering to history buffs.

Visit a historical plantation to learn about America's often-dark past, go on any one of several ghost tours, or learn about the pirates of the city's yesteryear. Hotel lodging is also not cheap in New Orleans, although you can find many private Airbnb rentals for under $50 if you book out far enough in advance.

Like this article? But before you head out for your trip, you need to pack the right clothing and the right gear. Beyond the basic necessities, you can make your summer vacation more enjoyable by packing these 12 cool travel items. (See also: 8 Credit Card Perks That'll Make Your Summer Travels Easier)

1. Portable power bank

Tech devices have become an essential part of travel gear for most of us. We often use them even more while we're away from home — whether it's following a GPS map on a phone, watching movies on tablets, or reading books on e-readers. Don't run the risk of your devices running out of juice while you're on vacation. Get yourself a portable power bank so you can charge your gadgets on the go. You charge it up before you head out the door, then when you need it you can plug your device in.

2. Filtered water bottle

Often on vacation, and particularly in foreign countries, tap water doesn't meet the same quality standards you're used to. This can mean you end up buying a lot of bottled water. Filtered water bottles are great from both an environmental perspective as they reduce the amount of plastic you use, and also because they save you a significant amount of money. You can fill up from virtually any water source and drink with confidence, knowing that the water you’re drinking is safe. Selfie stick

A selfie stick is a must-have accessory for any vacationer these days. They're inexpensive and extremely useful for conveniently snapping great vacation photos. No more pictures with one of the family members missing or having to trust strangers with your camera or smartphone. (See also: The 5 Best Selfie Sticks)

4. Electronic accessories organizer

Why is it that whenever you put a bunch of wires in a bag, they always come out intertwined in an impossibly tangled mess? There's no need to worry about that happening with an electronic organizer. There are separate compartments for all of your cables, chargers, headphones, memory cards and whatever other accessories you have. The organizer will keep all of the wires untangled and give you one easy place to find everything electronics-related.

5. Multitool

A multitool is an unquestionably handy item to take on vacation, as there will always come a time when you need to open a bottle, tighten some sunglasses, or fix something else in a pinch. There are many that are now TSA-approved if you're heading somewhere by plane, and most are small enough to fit in your pocket. (See Also: 13 Essentials Every Emergency Bag Should Have)

6. Portable espresso machine

If you're a coffee enthusiast whose brain doesn't function until you've had your morning cup of joe, this one's for you. You'll never need to worry about finding a decent cup of coffee again. Portable espresso machines are compact, lightweight, and hand-powered so all you need to add is ground coffee beans for the perfect brew. I personally use the Handpresso and it works very well.

7. Flexible tripod

Unlike a traditional, bulky, extendible tripod, a flexible tripod can be configured on pretty much any surface, and they're so small they'll fit in your carry-on bag. Wrap it around a pole, secure it to a tree, or set it up on an uneven surface. They're the best way to achieve a stable base for your smartphone or camera, and can be used with a self timer for when the selfie stick just won't do.

I personally use the JOBY Gorillapod, and it seems to last longer than other similar products on the market. In my experience, many cheaper brands break down with use.

8. Portable backrest chair

Folding seats with backs are ingenious inventions that are little more than a padded mat with two straps attached to keep the seat at a 90-degree angle to the back. But they provide a great backrest for when you're relaxing at the beach, having a picnic in the park, or out camping in the wild. They're also extremely lightweight, and you can carry them anywhere in your backpack or suitcase.

9. Inflatable lounger

These inflatable loungers can be blown up in minutes without an air pump. The compartments are designed to catch the air, so all it takes is a few waves and they fill up, then you fold down the end and secure it in place. These loungers can be used on the beach, in the park, or even in the pool or sea. They pack down to the size of a very small backpack, so it's like being able to carry your sofa with you wherever you go.

10. Sand-free beach mat

If you've ever spent a day at the beach, only to get home with what seems like half of it folded into your beach blanket, then you'll appreciate a sand-free beach mat. These mats have a one-way mesh design, allowing sand to filter out through the microscopic holes rather than staying on top. It's not just for the beach, either. Dirt and water also pass through the mesh, so the mat is great for camping or picnics. It's easy to clean and can be used anywhere outdoors.

11. Camera drone

If you want to snap some super cool shots of your vacation and have a bit of fun while getting them, then a camera drone is the way to do it. The thrill of flying your own mini, unmanned quadcopter is endlessly entertaining.

For ultimate portability, I use the DJI Spark, which takes beautiful cinematic videos and photos that put the iPhone to shame. And you may even be able to make a few dollars from the amazing aerial footage that you capture from it as well. (See also: How to Earn Extra Income With a Drone)

12. Clip-on phone camera lenses

Smartphone cameras are so advanced these days that it's often unnecessary to take a separate camera with you on vacation. But you may still want a bit more from your holiday snaps than your phone alone can provide. Clip-on camera lenses are great for producing different results like wide angle, fisheye, and macro, and can take your smartphone photography to the next level.

Like this article? I've also learned a thing or two about how to make the most of my budget while visiting them.

Budget travel isn't about always seeking the cheapest option. For me, it's more about getting the most for my money, whether that be accommodation, activities, or an evening out. Some destinations are downright cheap, while others provide unbeatable value for the kind of unique experience you can have there.

When it comes to getting a good deal, timing counts for a lot, as prices in most popular destinations fluctuate wildly depending on what time of year you visit. Even though summer can be the worst time financially to visit most places, for others, it's going to provide you with the best opportunity to keep your costs down. Here are my favorite budget summer destinations for 2018. (See also: 5 of the Safest Countries to Visit in 2018)

1. Grenada

Out of the 10 years that I've been traveling the world, two of them have been spent living in Grenada. Somehow I keep being pulled back to this tiny island in the West Indies. It's a hugely popular destination for cruise ships stopping to tour some of the nearby islands, but there's far more here to discover than could possibly be achieved in a few hours. From the stunning beaches and lush green landscapes, to the delicious food and lively nightlife, I can't get enough of this place. It's amazing that, despite its small size (the island is just 21 miles long), there are so many things to do in Grenada.

As with the rest of the Caribbean, late summer is actually a slow period with very few visitors due to it being the wet season. However, a little known secret is that Grenada lies just outside of the hurricane belt, meaning it tends not to get hit directly by the worst category five storms. You can expect around an hour of torrential rain each day, but other than that, it's blue skies and sunshine all the way. The only difference is, you have fewer tourists to share it with.

The Caribbean isn't your quintessential budget destination, and Grenada doesn't necessarily buck the trend in that respect, with some activities and daily costs on the expensive side. But it is possible to visit without draining your bank account by eating at locally run food outlets, and staying away from high-end resorts. I've found listings for rooms in mid-range hotels available for as little as $100 per night. (See also: 9 Simple Ways to Save on Hotel Stays)

2. Colombia

Just the mention of name Colombia strikes fear into the hearts of many people, thanks to its long association with the brutal drug trafficking cartels and guerrilla insurgencies that once brought the country to its knees. But Colombia has been working hard over the last couple of decades to shed that image, and it's finally beginning to see the results of all of that effort. In general, Colombia is now an extremely safe place to visit and it's cleaned up its act on multiple fronts, from toppling the most powerful drug cartels, to signing a peace deal with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in 2016. (See also: 4 Affordable Destinations That Are Safer Than You Think)

I recently fell in love with this country. Highlights include the many beautiful landscapes that encompass modern cities like Medellin and Bogota, the Caribbean coastline in popular destinations such as the colorful Cartagena, and swathes of untouched rainforest including a section of the Amazon.

The climate varies throughout Colombia depending on where you are, but it's always possible to enjoy sunshine and reasonable temperatures regardless of the time of year. Visiting outside of the peak months (between December and February) will mean cheaper prices and fewer crowds. If you can, skip the wet season in May, June, and July, and head there in late summer.

Round-trip flights to Medellin are available for around $300–$400 in the summer months with Miami, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale being the cheapest departure destinations. For less than $70 per night I've found mid-range rooms on Booking.com, with high-end rooms available for a little over $100 per night. (See also: 10 Flight Booking Hacks to Save You Hundreds)

3. Thailand

Thailand's tourist numbers have continued to soar as it has advanced from being a backpacker's haven into a full-blown behemoth of a tourist destination. In 2017, it attracted over 35 million travelers, and one of the reasons behind this success is that it caters to everyone, from those wanting five-star luxury to the more budget-conscious. It's one of only a few places that I've visited on numerous occasions, and somewhere I love each time I go, knowing I can live extremely well without spending a fortune.

July to October isn't the most popular time to visit because it's the rainy season, but coming at this time of year actually has its advantages. It's relatively easy to plan around the rain, and temperatures are still warm and welcoming. The lower visitor numbers also enable you to find cheaper prices on everything from hotel rooms to meals out, and there are far fewer crowds at even the biggest attractions.

In many ways, Thailand is the ultimate budget destination because basic living costs are extremely low, and even luxurious touches like spa days or cocktails in rooftop bars remain cheap. You can even enjoy a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant for $20, so good living is guaranteed even on a budget.

Flights to Thailand's capital Bangkok from Los Angeles with a stop are around $500 in summer. A room in a mid-level hotel will set you back around $60 per night with plenty of options available on Booking.com. (See also: 7 Countries Where You Can Travel on $30 a Day or Less)

4. Bulgaria

When the rest of Europe is flooded with tourists and hotel prices begin to soar during the summer months, Bulgaria remains delightfully affordable. This is still the country's busiest season; hotels and tours do book up, so it's worth planning ahead. But Bulgaria offers such excellent value that even in peak season you can travel on less than $50 a day. (See also: 5 European Cities You Can Visit for $50 a Day)

The ancient city of Sofia has plenty to offer visitors. The city's relics give visitors a glimpse at over 2,000 years of history, and the 1.2 million residents provide a thriving metropolis complete with a thumping nightlife, a great restaurant scene, and plenty of accommodation options.

For a bit of nature, head out to the Seven Rila Lakes area where there are countless hiking trails. The best time to visit this part of Bulgaria is in the middle of summer (July and August), when high temperatures hover around 75 degrees.

No trip to Bulgaria would be complete without a visit to Plovdiv, the nation's second largest city and arguably its most charming. Here you can head out to the stunning vineyards that pepper the surrounding landscapes, enjoy summertime wine festivals and concerts, and get lost in the labyrinth of ancient cobblestone streets. There are so many things to do in Plovdiv that you may find yourself extending your visit.

5. South Africa

South Africa is enjoyable at any time of the year. And while flights there are not cheap (round-trip airfare between New York and Cape Town starts at around $1,200 in July), once you get there, it's one of the cheapest destinations to visit thanks to a strong U.S. dollar.

Peak tourist season in this southern hemisphere nation tends to be during the summer months of December to March. June through August in South Africa is the dry season and winter. Prices are slightly lower during this period, but there's no shortage of things to do.

My wife and I visited in June and July, and while the Southern Cape region was a bit chilly, we had spectacular weather. June is the start of the whale watching season along the Cape south coast. This is when southern right whales can be best viewed by land from Hermanus as they come close to the rocky shorelines to give birth. When we were there, we were just a few hundred feet away from dozens of breaching whales and baby calves.

The drier climate means that July and August are the best months for viewing wildlife in South Africa's many national parks as they tend to congregate around diminishing waterholes.

September is the start of spring in South Africa. This is the time when flowers start to bloom across the Western and Northern Cape. And Namaqualand in the Northern Cape becomes carpeted in colorful flowers.

I recommend renting a car in South Africa and driving up and down the coast. There's really no better way to explore this naturally blessed nation!

Like this article? If you'll be vacationing in the next few months, you can bet that there'll be millions of other people traveling as well. It can be a hectic time, but there's one surprising thing you might already be holding in your wallet that can make your travels way easier — your credit card.

It can pay off (literally) to take a few minutes to look up your credit card's Terms and Conditions (T&C) online. Keep an eye out for these eight travel perks. Your T&C will tell you exactly how to take advantage of them.

And if you don't have a card that offers these travel perks yet? Now's a great time to see if any travel rewards credit cards might be a good fit for you, while keeping an eye out for these perks.

1. Car rental and trip insurance

Just because you might not be traveling through treacherous winter weather doesn't mean that there isn't a potential for something to go wrong. Many travel credit cards offer insurance to protect you in these cases, such as:

Car rental insurance

Trip cancellation insurance

Travel accident insurance

Emergency evacuation insurance

Again, your credit card's T&C is the best place to get the full scoop on which programs you might be eligible for, and if so, what the details are. (See also: 12 Travel Perks You Didn't Know Your Credit Card Had)

2. Global Entry/TSA Precheck fee credits

Few things are worse at the airport than standing in line for what seems like hours and then frantically shedding and then redonning all of your possessions. Global Entry and TSA Precheck allow you to bypass most of this hassle, but they come with a hefty fee: $100 for Global Entry, and $85 for TSA Precheck.

Many travel rewards cards offer you Global Entry and TSA Precheck credits, however. Usually all you have to do is make the purchase with the card, and you'll receive an automatic credit on your statement. But check your card's T&C to be sure.

3. Airport lounge access

When the airport mobs are tight, there's no better place than an exclusive airport lounge. These lounges are usually affiliated with a particular airline or credit card. Priority Pass is one program that gives members access to a number of different types of lounges around the world.

Lounge amenities vary based on which individual lounge you go to, but at a bare minimum you can expect to find a less-crowded, more comfortable atmosphere full of free Wi-Fi connections and outlets to charge your electronics while you wait.

Many lounges offer free drinks and snacks. Some even offer creative conveniences, such as showers, spas, and sleeping pods. It's a good idea to check ahead to see what lounges are along your travel route and what, if any, requirements there are (smart casual dress is required with some lounges, for example). (See also: Best Credit Cards with Free Airport Lounge Access)

4. Roadside assistance

Maybe you get locked out of your car, your tire goes flat, or you hear a sharp crack while you're driving down the road. Any way you slice it, car problems are a summer road trippers' worst fear. More than that, they can be dangerous. You definitely don't want to be stranded out in three-digit summer heat with no help.

That's why having roadside assistance can be a huge safety net for you while you're driving around this summer. They can help you with services like towing, a tire change, a jump-start, a locksmith, or gas. Make sure to print a copy of your roadside assistance details from your card's T&Cs so you have the phone number handy and know the program's limitations. Some roadside assistance programs, for instance, will only cover a certain dollar amount worth of services.

5. Uber credits

Unless you plan on staying at the airport for your entire trip, chances are you'll need to find a mode of transportation to take you to your final destination. Some credit cards allow you to earn points that can be redeemed for Uber rides, while others give you Uber credits every month as a perk. To use the latter, you simply link up your credit card in the Uber app. Then, when you're getting ready to take a ride, you simply select the credits as payment for your ride.

6. Concierge service

Sure, you can use your phone to Google a lot of things these days. But if you're out adventuring in the sticks or camping somewhere remote, sometimes you'll find yourself with an internet signal that's frustratingly slow. In this case, it might be easier to just call up someone who can answer your questions or help guide you over the phone, such as a phone-in concierge service.

Believe it or not, many travel rewards credit cards come with such a perk. Depending on your credit card's concierge program, you can call them up and ask them to help you with things like finding the nearest mechanic; booking tickets or making reservations at hotels, restaurants, or events; or even to helping you plan your trip.

7. Boingo Wi-Fi membership

Speaking of internet connections, it can be frustrating to find them when you're en route between destinations. Boingo Wi-Fi is one product that can help you stay connected while you travel. They've got more than 200,000 hot spots around the country and over one million spots around the world where you can connect securely. Normally this service costs $10 per month, but with some travel rewards credit cards, you can get a complimentary membership.

8. Status upgrades

One of the most common travel perks on credit cards is a status upgrade. Some cards automatically give you status upgrades at hotels, airlines, or with rental car companies. Depending on the program, these can add just a nice little touch, or they can be travel lifesavers.

For example, if you're a tall person and you're trying to save a buck by renting a car that's the size equivalent of a golf cart, having an automatic upgrade to a full-size rental car can be a game-changer. If you're on the road a lot or you're trying to enjoy an all-too-infrequent vacation, being automatically upgraded to a nicer room with a breathtaking ocean view and a soft-as-silk bed can turn your mere travel experience into a luxury vacation you'll never forget.

Like this article? I'm keen to see the whole wide world, but more often than not I opt to stay local(ish) and set off on an adventure around our own beautiful country. America has many world-class destinations, for sure — New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Vegas — but I've always had an expectation-exceeding time in smaller cities that are frequently overlooked when people are planning their vacations.

This summer, skip the major metro areas and pop into a city with a more down-to-earth and affordable appeal. Here are a few suggestions to get your wheels turning, each with a dynamic draw all their own. (See also: How to Avoid These 12 Summer Travel Mistakes)

Detroit, Michigan

When I visited Detroit on my birthday last spring to catch a Tigers game, I expected to see an economically challenged city (as it is often portrayed), but what I experienced was an epicenter ripe with activity and promise. Millennials took advantage of the pleasant weather to exercise outside; business people moved in and out of shiny new restaurants; and construction crews worked diligently on projects, including commercial refurbs and new condo developments.

I found so many things to love about Detroit — like the Tigers' stunning Comerica Park, one of the best burgers I've ever eaten at the casually upscale Town house restaurant, and the quality selection of vinyl record stores (where I picked up a few Motown albums, of course) — but what really piqued my interest was the undercover real estate opportunities in the area. Has anybody told the Millennials that they could have their avocado toast (and eat it, too) from the inside their newly constructed or renovated homes at seriously affordable prices? And with the median home value in Detroit being $138,700 with a forecast appreciation of 3.2%, you might want to consider relocating altogether. (See also: The 5 Best Mid-Sized Cities for Millennials)

Columbus, Ohio

Recently I was invited by Experience Columbus to visit its fine capital city so I could meet local entrepreneurs, dine in the city's diverse restaurants, and participate in activities that featured hands-on, take-home projects that anyone can enjoy. I had never been before, and I enjoyed all parts of the trip, but it was the latter focus that deserves attention here. I just love little craft projects!

The activities in which I participated included: metal stamping keychains and necklaces in a jewelry-making class at The Smithery, designing my own scented candle at The Candle Lab (my signature scent is ginger ale, cilantro, and grapefruit, if you're interested in recreating it), and felting an alpaca- and sheep-fleece scarf after an afternoon excursion to a farm to meet the animals. All these activities are included on the Made in Cbus trail created by Experience Columbus.

If you're dedicated to shopping local, it's also worth noting that Columbus's entrepreneur and maker community is extremely tight-knit. Like, thick as thieves. There's an uncommon amount of cross-branding and -marketing along with a palpable feeling of support for each other's work. It's the kind of thing that'll make you feel proud to spend your money there.

Memphis, Tennessee

I was drawn to Memphis, Tennessee for two reasons: The flight was cheaper than the one to Nashville, and Memphis is the native home of my musical fave Justin Timberlake. Don't judge.

I enjoyed plenty of music while I was in town, along with delicious food and a minor league baseball game courtesy of the Memphis Redbirds. I also discovered, to my surprise, a working community dedicated to helping each other while improving the environment. I spent my birthday volunteering on a farm that grows and harvests food specifically to feed those in need. If you'd like to get your hands dirty in Memphis, browse the available opportunities on VolunteerMatch.org.

Asbury Park, New Jersey

I bought a home in Asbury Park four years ago because I saw the property-value growth potential, but it was also a nice place to kick back and relax when my life in Manhattan got too hectic. Two years ago, I gave up life in the big city to live in this quirky little city by the sea full-time. I'm glad I did.

Asbury Park has a long and legendary history — from its heyday in the early 1900s up to the Great Depression to its association with Bruce Springsteen to its full-steam-ahead comeback that's been mounting for the past five years following the economic decline.

Today, the city, which spans just 1.6 squares miles of the Jersey Shore, is home to an assortment of can't-go-wrong restaurants, a destination-worthy music and art scene, hotels the press can't stop talking about, retail shops with interesting and often handmade merch, a thriving night life and LGBT scene, and, of course, the sand and surf.

Best of all, this "Brooklyn by the beach," as it's been dubbed by locals is just a short car or train ride (less than two hours) from NYC, Philly, Atlantic City, the Poconos, and more. Come for a visit. You'll be impressed, I promise.

Like this article? You found the best hotel rate. You've got activities and meals in mind that won't eat up your savings. But what about the expense of the actual travel? From snacks to fuel to entertainment to handling the unexpected, these tips will help you keep costs low while you're on the road.

Be strategic with fuel

There's not much you can do to control the cost of fuel, but you can make sure your vehicle is as fuel-efficient as possible. The best way to do that is to keep your car well maintained. Keep up with regular oil changes and tire alignment, and your car will run cleaner, cooler, and have less drag.

Also, don't wait until your tank is on empty and you're forced to use the nearest gas station. Instead, use a service like GasBuddy to find nearby gas stations with the best fuel prices. Plan your stops accordingly; if you're traveling with young kids, chances are one of them will need to use the restroom, anyway. (See also: Best Credit Cards for Road Trips)

Pack snacks and beverages

The most cost-efficient way to have plenty of snacks on a road trip is to bring your own. You can't be sure what fast food joint or gas station offers will be available. And how much beef jerky can you eat before you start to regret it? Buy or make your family's favorite snack foods in bulk before you leave, then package into single servings. Choose snacks that make the least possible mess. It's much easier to vacuum up crumbs than it is to clean gummy, sticky stains from car upholstery.

Water is the best beverage for road trips. Take a cooler with ice and a couple of one-gallon jugs filled with fresh water. Refill individual bottles as needed. Juice, tea, or soda will lead to endless needs for bathroom breaks. Coffee, of course, fuels many drivers, as well. I prefer to start the journey with my own home-brewed coffee in my travel mug. You can also pick up coffee to go from any restaurant or gas station for very little. As with food, bringing your own entertainment options from home saves time and money.

You don't need special items for road trip entertainment; you just need portable options. Mess-free art materials are great: colored pencils, washable markers, and sketchbooks. Download a selection of audiobooks before you go; Librivox offers hundreds for free. Update your music playlists, and download movies for them to watch on tablets you bring along. (See also: 9 Things You Must Do If You're Traveling With Kids)

Travel based on time of day

The best time of day to travel depends on time of the year, personal preference, destination, and the length of the trip. Many parents of young children find it easier to travel at night, when the kids will sleep for most of the way. That's a great option if the driver can stay awake.

During the summer, driving at night can also keep the temperature lower, meaning less stress on the engine and better fuel efficiency. The calculable savings is minimal, so compare it to the increased coffee you'll require to drive all night before you make a decision.

The other factor to consider is traffic. If your timing will have you entering a major city at rush hour, change it. Leave earlier, leave later, or plan an extended rest stop along the way. Sitting in traffic is uncomfortable and stressful, and the stop-and-go movement is hard on your car and fuel efficiency.

Prep for travel emergencies

Take baby wipes. I cannot stress enough how handy, no, how essential a pack of baby wipes is in any car. Don't have a baby? Doesn't matter. Baby wipes will save the day in so many ways.

Coffee spill? Baby wipe. Messy face? Baby wipe. No napkins from the takeout place? Baby wipes. Smelling a little less-than-fresh after eight hours on the road? Baby wipes.

A first aid kit is essential, too. Buy a pre-packed one, or make your own and keep it in the car. You can include the essential items you know you'll use the most, as well as any specialized care items you might need.

The other item that can save you from excess stress and cost is a car emergency kit. You should have the supplies to change a tire as well as a spare tire, flares, and jumper cables. It's helpful to have a flashlight and basic tools on hand, as well. I've found it's also helpful to have someone who's adept at changing tires. (See also: The 5 Best Jump Starter Kits)

Regardless of your skill level, though, preparation can save you in many ways. When you're prepared with snacks, entertainment, and emergency supplies you'll spend less and be more relaxed. That makes for a much better road trip.

Like this article? Looking to explore new destinations without leaving the U-S of A? Shake things up this summer by stepping out of your comfort zone and see the country with these exciting summer travel ideas.

1. Set off on a surprise excursion

Recently I met the owners of travel company Pack Up + Go, and I was immediately intrigued when they explained what set it apart from other tourism outfits. The gist of their operation is that they plan three-day surprise getaways for their customers based on a few criteria — like travel budget, travel dates, preferences, and personal information — so they can book all your transportation and accommodations for you.

A week before you leave, you'll receive an email with the weather forecast for your secret destination, recommended items to pack (like bathing suits or down parkas), any luggage restrictions, and when and where to catch your transportation. A few days before your trip, an envelope arrives, and you are not allowed to open it, lest you ruin the fun. Inside the envelope that you shouldn't even peek in until you arrive at your transportation hub are directions to your accommodations and a curated list of recommendations for everything from cafes, to restaurants and night life, to rainy day activities.

While this may not be the ideal option for hot- or cold-weather adverse travelers — you get no say in where you end up (though the planners do take into consideration where you've already been) — Pack Up + Go is a fresh, fun option to explore a new area you may never have chosen to visit yourself.

2. Sleep over with Airbnb-style camping

I love Airbnb and camping, which is why I'm an early adopter of Tentrr, a new app-based travel service that helps connect would-be campers to property owners who have erected high-quality campsites on their properties with the help of the Tentrr crew. Currently there are 55 sites available, mostly in New York, which will certainly expand outside the state and across the country as the service gains popularity and continues to grow.

Adhering to the standard setup guidelines provided by Tentrr, each site includes a large canvas tent, generally equipped to fit five or six campers (though some sites allow up to eight campers); a fire pit, picnic table, five-gallon water container, outdoor camp toilet, queen size cot, metal grill, two lounge chairs, dry food storage, and an outdoor sun shower. All you have to do is bring the food, drinks, games, and whatever else you need to stay comfortable for a couple days in the great outdoors.

There are properties available to please every type of traveler, including those close to beaches, forests, meadows, ponds and lakes, rivers and streams, and breathtaking views of the surroundings. I personally booked a trip later this summer at a mountain hideaway with a private pond. Activities in the area included canoeing/kayaking, hiking, road biking, white water rafting, fishing, golf, wineries and distilleries, a local flea market, and more. Most sites are available for between $120 and $150 total per night. The price doesn't increase based on the number of campers; instead it remains a flat rate that you can split with your friends to make your trip an incredibly low-cost, but memorable getaway. Hit the road on a rental motorcycle

You'll never get me on a motorcycle (I can barely operate an electric can opener without hurting myself), but if you're a dedicated biker EagleRider, the world's largest motorcycle tourism company, can help you achieve your sightseeing goals. With your monthly membership in Club EagleRider ($29/month, plus a $29 sign-up fee), you receive one free rental day and free or discounted rates on additional rental days.

4. Cross the country via train

I had almost given up on rail travel because of the increasing prices — trips from my home in Manhattan to visit my family in Baltimore were sometimes over $300 round-trip, compared to below $50 for a round-trip bus ride — but when I heard about supersaver Derek Low's four-day $429 cross-country rail trip, starting in San Francisco and ending in New York City — the idea was worth revisiting. Thanks to his 15-day, eight-ride Amtrak rail pass, Low efficiently traveled from coast to coast in less than 96 hours — and enjoyed sightseeing at a few cities in between, like Denver, Salt Lake City, and Chicago — while still having several trips remaining on his pass to visit a few more quick destinations on his way back out West.

If you don't plan to make any stops, however, and just want to observe nature from the comfort of your train car, you can shave a couple hundred dollars off what he spent to bring it down to about $213, according to Low's account of his adventure. If you don't think you're savvy enough to score these deals on your own, Low offers to arrange your entire trip for you for a fee of $49. (See also: 5 Fun, Affordable Train Trips)

5. Deliver cars, campers, and RVs to their owners

Did you know that you can save a ton of money and subsidize your road-based vacation transportation costs by renting RVs, campervans, motor homes, and cars for as low as $1 day? Rental site imoova.com works with traditional rental companies to offer its customers one-way travel opportunities to desired locations. How can that be, you ask? Simple. You're not just embarking on your own travels; you're also helping the rental companies save money on hiring expensive drivers to return the vehicles back to their home bases by doing it for them.

If you're considering a road trip this year, check imoova to see what you can come up with. The hundreds of dollars you could save will leave you with more money for better dinners, a couple more drinks, and more exciting activities along the way.

6. Self-tour a new area on foot

If you like to investigate new cities and neighborhoods on foot, download the Sidewalk app to tap into a free library of city walks that you can do on your own time. These insider-curated walks provide a local's perspective on your surroundings (they're created by the very people who live there) giving you the money-saving freedom to be your own tour guide. The app just launched this spring, but it already contains 60 walks you can enjoy in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle, with more cities coming soon.

7. Follow the beaten paths

When you prefer the seclusion and meditative opportunities of nature, enlist AllTrails as your travel companion. The free web- and app-based service gives you access to 50,000-plus trail maps (hiking and running) along with directions directly to the trailhead from wherever you are. You also can filter trails by difficulty, distance, rating, amenities (like waterfalls), and identify kid- and dog-friendly trails. When you're done, leave a review and share photos of your experience to enhance the experience for others.

8. Challenge your mental and physical abilities

Unlike many other fitness challenges, which last a few hours or less, Cotopaxi Questival is a 24-hour adventure series that turns this sometimes-hardcore genre into a community-driven social event.

Teams of two to six are tasked with hundreds of challenges over the 24-hour period, from Foodie (eat a taco with no hands), to Community (send a postcard to a veteran, or pick up trash at a local beach), to Adventurous (camp under the stars, run a mile in fancy dress), and more.

There are 50 locations all over the country from which to choose that are held individually throughout the year. Challenges can change to suit the location, too, so you won't know what's coming your way until 24 hours before your own event.

Like this article? Whether you’re going to the beach, the lake, the mountains, or “The Happiest Place on Earth” (at least from the kids’ perspective), summer vacation can be expensive. It also can put you at risk for theft — both of your personal belongings and your identity.

According to Experian, the average per-person cost of a vacation is $2,275, and half of this expense is put on a credit card. Planning ahead, setting a budget, and saving money in advance are essential for a debt-free vacation. Even after putting in the time and effort to start a vacation fund at the bank, using credit can be a smart financial choice. Here are seven ways using credit as a financial tool during your summer travel can help you have a safer, less-expensive vacation without taking on debt.

1. Convenience

Figuring out foreign currency can be like Harry Potter counting Muggle money. Using a credit card can eliminate uncomfortable stares from the locals, who you know are thinking, Yup, they’re tourists, while you and yours hold up the line deciding whether the gold coin with the lady on it or the silver coin with the man is the right change. A credit card can also automate the calculation of exchange rates. Look for cards that don’t charge a foreign transaction fee. Finally, credit cards hold up much better than cash when you drop your wallet in the pool.

2. Travel insurance

Some credit card agreements provide travel insurance when you book flights or hotels. You’ll be glad you didn’t reserve those nonrefundable tickets with cash when the hurricane blows through two weeks before departure and takes your hotel with it.

3. Purchase discounts

Branded credit cards may offer discounts for purchases on the resort property or in stores and restaurants in the area. The right logo or cute cartoon character on the card can leave you with a little extra cash in the bank back home.

4. Rewards and incentives

Airline miles, hotel points, and cash back can add up quickly on a cross-country road trip or overseas vacation. Using a credit card could put a bit of money back in your savings account, get you a free room for a night, or earn a seat upgrade on a long overnight flight.

5. Identity theft protection

Your identity may be your most valuable possession. Using a credit card for vacation purchases will protect you when your identity is compromised. Because losses due to fraud are limited to $50, if your identity is stolen while on the road, you won’t lose any cash. In most cases, even the $50 is waived by the credit card company.

6. Theft deterrence

Want to put a bullseye on your back? Pull out a big wad of cash in a crowded vacation spot. Flashing loads of lucre can make you a prime target for thieves and pickpockets. Eliminate bulging pockets and use a credit card instead of cash. If you do have your pocket picked, simply call the credit card company to have the account blocked and a replacement card delivered to you.

7. Expense tracking

Using a single credit card for all your vacation purchases can be a good financial management tool. Designating a single card will give you a complete record of your expenses when you get home — in the form of your monthly statement.

You might also consider applying for a new card expressly for your summer vacation. That makes expense tracking even easier — any spending on the card is automatically "vacation spending." If you choose your vacation card carefully, you may be able to boost your rewards and savings, too. Before applying, check your Experian credit report and score. Knowing what’s in the report will ensure there aren’t any surprises when you apply.

Of course, you can’t just charge it and forget it. You still have to monitor your spending along the way, stick to your budget, and use your vacation savings to pay the balance in full when you get home. It's already summer, and you have yet to save for a summer vacation. No worries. There are many ways you can still enjoy a family getaway on the cheap. If you get creative, adjust your expectations, and put in a little extra effort, you can get some much needed rest and relaxation without going into debt.

1. Gather last-minute funds

Maybe you haven't done your big spring clean-out. You can host a yard sale this weekend and get some cash for your old treasures. Check out local resale shops for clothing, children's items, and more. I've made a couple hundred dollars after a big clear out of toys and baby clothes to put toward time away. My husband is a teacher and has taken on summer gigs (like being a camp counselor) to make money to put toward travel.

Sit down and write up a list of any and all the ways you think you might be able to make some quick cash. Other ideas include selling clothing on sites like Poshmark, finally rolling all that loose change, selling your unwanted event tickets on StubHub, and more. (See also: 25 Ways to Make Money Today)

2. Adjust your expectations

Consider approaching your usual vacation in a new way. Why not skip going out to eat and save a ton by trying to cook your way through each day? If you reserve a room or suite with a kitchen, this will be much easier. Try spending no more than you would on a normal week of groceries at home. Also, don't get sucked in by high-priced tourist attractions — many beaches and parks you'll find at your destination are free.

There are many ways to cut dollars along your journey. If your hotel offers a free breakfast, take advantage. Call ahead to see if there are any perks included in your reservation, like free transportation, reduced ticket prices to local attractions, or special nightly events. If you have yet to secure your room, try staying a little farther away from the most alluring towns and attractions. Even driving 10 to 15 minutes can save you hundreds.

3. Check out your state

I recently researched everything the great state of New York has to offer in the way of travel. And I found plenty. Fresh water beaches on Lake Ontario. Majestic lake and mountain views in the Adirondacks. Romantic castles in the Thousand Islands region. Wineries and waterfalls in the Finger Lakes. There's so much to do within a couple hours of my front door, and I didn't even know it.

Skip the pricey plane ticket and check out your state. You could plan a road trip visiting different regions, spending just a day or so in each area. Or you could choose the coolest thing you find and spend a couple days there. If you're not going to the more traditional vacation hot spots — the beach, for example — you may save a good chunk on hotels and eats.

4. Scope out campgrounds

If you have yet to try camping, you're missing out on an extremely inexpensive way to see the world. Try camping out at some of our country's National Parks. In fact, you can stay for an entire week at some of them for less than $200. Can't afford to go far? Check out state or even county parks. One of my favorites is in the Finger Lakes. Camping is dirt cheap, yet the setting gives you million dollar views and free swimming to boot.

If you're not the outdoorsy type, some campgrounds offer glamping, aka glamorous camping, in cabins, yurts, and other accommodations that will feel more indoors than tent camping. (See also: 5 Ways to Save on Your Next Glamping Trip)

5. Go in with a friend (or two)

My family is actually taking a trip with another family this summer. We're both on a limited budget. Our kids are the same ages, and we like doing a lot of the same things. So, we hunted around to find a house rental to split in the Catskills. One of our shared interests is cooking, so we've already planned our homemade meals for the week. The house is close to the municipal pool, so that will be great for cooling off and it only costs a few dollars for a weekly pass.

What do we plan to do for entertainment? Mostly just hang out. If you are close enough to certain friends or even family, sharing space can be a huge money-saver. And you'll have so much fun being together that you won't need to spend money to find things to do. If you're really strapped, your friends may even offer to let you come visit them for free. We've also done that in the past, and it was so much fun.

6. Consider day tripping

Who says you have to spend the night to get away? There are tons of places you can pack up and go for the day and get some much-needed R&R. I like to go the old fashioned way and look at a physical map of my area. I have drawn a radius that gets us places in two or three hours (or less). In my circle, I can hit up gorgeous gorges and wineries in Ithaca, NY. Spend the day trekking around Philadelphia or New York City. We can even jaunt down to the Crayola Factory or Hershey Park for the kids.

One of my close friends cannot afford to go on a full vacation in the summer. So, she takes her family on an incredible day trip most weekends. She packs lunch and snacks, too. Her kids absolutely love the adventures they find, and it keeps the fun going all summer long.

7. Research housesitting

Another friend of mine recently offered us her apartment near the Flatiron district of NYC because she needs a house- and cat-sitter while she backpacks around Europe. Unfortunately, we're not able to go. But seriously! What an amazing opportunity to spend a week in the heart of the City for basically nothing.

Did you know that people post house-sitting gigs online? It's a great way to get a super awesome vacation, and fast. Try searching around on Craigslist or targeted sites like House Sitting America or Care.com. You can even put out a call on your Facebook to see if any friends are in need of this service. Gigs vary from place to place, but many will let you bring your pets and family. Some even pay you for your caretaking services. Conserve your cash on general expenses so you can spend more on the things you'd like to do. Some pricey travel hiccups are unavoidable, but most of them you can definitely sidestep with a little bit of planning. Here are 12 tips on how to avoid costly travel mistakes.

1. Booking your entire hotel stay with one reservation

Like the stock market, nightly hotel rates fluctuate based on demand, time of year, and other factors, which means that you may not be getting the very best deal if you book the entire length of your stay in one reservation.

In fact, you could save up to 40 percent off your entire stay by playing with your booking dates within the reservation system before you commit. For example, a five-night reservation at a popular hotel may book for $190 per night, but if you book the transaction as a one-night and a four-night reservation, the nightly rate drops to $127 the first night and $126 per night for the additional four nights. A great site to help you master this technique is FindOptimal.com, which will use its patent-pending technology to optimize your saving potential by providing cost-cutting solutions over two reservations instead of a single booking.

2. Overbooking your activity itinerary

I'm a planner through and through. My vacation days are jam-packed the moment I arrive at my destination, sometimes to the dismay of my travel partners who prefer a more leisurely approach to new-area exploration. While staying busy and active on vacation is my idea of a good time, I can admit that my tight schedule has hit a few snags in the past. Things don't always go according to plan and I've lost money on activity reservations because I was just too tired to do one more thing that day. Avoid this mistake by creating a loose itinerary ahead of time — do your research but don't lock down everything hour by hour unless it's something that's only offered on specific dates and times, or is in danger of being sold out. Once you have what you'd like to do on paper, fill in when you'd like to do them once you've arrived and are settled.

3. Over-packing things you don't need

Over-packing can present several dilemmas over the course of your trip, starting with the cost of exceeding the 50-pound checked bag limit before boarding your flight. If you're unable to transfer the overage to other bags you may be carrying, you will be required to pay up. Not a great start to your vacation. Then you have to lug that luggage around with you wherever you go, and you'll curse the day you bought that extra pair of shoes when you're hunched over like Quasimodo because you've carried the equivalent of a well-fed preteen on your back for miles.

Let's not forget the trip home either. Now you have to buy an additional bag or leave clothing and accessories behind to make room for the items you've acquired during your travels. You can avoid all this hassle by editing your bag before you ever leave your house. Pack it, let it sit for a day so you can think about everything thing that's in it, then revisit it and pare down to only the essentials. (See also: 8 Things You Should Always Pack in Your Carry-On)

4. Racking up international transaction fees

While abroad, you could get slammed with international fees for both your credit and debit cards. Call your card providers to understand their international fees, and consider getting a new card if your current ones don't have good rates for overseas purchases. (See also: Best Credit Cards with Zero Foreign Transaction Fees)

"Be sure to set a travel notice for your credit card so that your provider doesn't lock your account on suspicion of fraud," adds Benjamin Glaser, features editor for shopping-comparison site DealNews. "For debit cards, find your bank's international ATM partners. You will still get charged a fee every time you withdraw money, but you will avoid an additional fee for going out of network."

It's also a good idea to keep at least $100 cash on you at all times during vacation for emergency situations. You don't want to be S.O.L. if your card is declined or if it gets lost or stolen. (See also: 12 Travel Perks You Didn't Know Your Credit Card Had)

5. Traveling solo

I thoroughly enjoy dining alone and going shopping or to see a movie by myself, but when I travel I prefer to have a partner. For starters, how spectacular will my trip be if I don't have anyone with whom to share my experiences? Secondly, traveling with a companion cuts almost all expenses in half, including lodging, grocery bills, ground transport fares, and more. The buddy system is always a more economical option if you practice good personal finance, in my opinion.

6. Waiting to book ground transportation at your destination

A few years ago I traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, for my birthday and decided to book the car at the destination airport. It's Memphis, I thought to myself, how many people are renting cars here? Big mistake. Murphy's Law dictates then when I think something stupid like that, all the cars are sold out when I arrive. As such, I had to pay a premium for the car they were able to find me, which was a major letdown and an expensive annoyance.

Booking ahead also applies to chauffeured transportation to avoid higher-than-standard rates on the ground.

"In many cases you can order a shared or private transfer at a lower cost than taking a taxi," says Isar Meitis, president of travel-booking site Last Minute Travel. "Plus, you can have a designated driver waiting with your name, saving you a lot of time, and, in many cases, money. Also, many tourist attractions are cheaper if you book them prior, compared to a 'walk-in.' For a family with kids, these savings add up very quickly. In addition, these tickets can usually be picked up from a will-call kiosk or booth, which also means you don't have to wait in lines."

7. Dining out for most meals

One of the most budget-draining parts of your vacation is food, especially if you're eating out for most of your meals. You already know this. But you can cut the fat — literally and figuratively — by taking advantage of the complimentary breakfast that may be included with your hotel stay, locating free happy hour snacks and deals in the area (many hotels are now offering a free wine reception in the afternoons for guests); and buying groceries locally that you can make in the kitchen at your accommodations. And I always consult Groupon and Restaurant.com for discounts before choosing where I'll eat. (See also: 4 Secrets to Eating Great Food for Cheap While Traveling)

8. Leaving the hotel fridge stocked

Minibars are problematic if you have self-control issues, or children. It's easy to ravage these goodies when you're famished, and eventually you'll give in to your kids begging to get at the gummy bears in the bear-shaped bottle. Your resistance is futile, in fact.

"Hotel fridges can come in handy, but they can also be expensive — especially with hungry little ones looking for a drink or snack," says Lissa Poirot, editor-in-chief of travel-review site Family Vacation Critic. "Many times, the cost of a single in-room water bottle is the same cost as what you'd spend on a full case of water — so take advantage of that. Ask your hotel to clear out the in-room fridge — they can do that — and then fill it with your own supplies."

9. Assuming you're locked into your original reservations

Airlines and travel-booking sites have given us cause to pause before canceling our reservations, because they hit us straight in the pocket if we want to make an amendment to our itineraries. But that's not always the case, and it's worth investigating the fine print of your reservations if you've since found a way to save additional cash.

"Most hotel bookings today are refundable, up to almost the very last minute," Meitis says. "Even after a booking was made, if a traveler can find a better deal, they can make the same reservation for less, and then cancel the original reservation. Obviously, the traveler needs to first verify he or she is not within penalty at the time of cancellation." (See also: 9 Simple Ways to Save on Hotel Stays)

10. Traveling to popular summer destinations during peak season

The term "peak season" is enough to keep me away, and you should avoid the high time at popular destinations, too. Not only will you pay far and above for just about everything you would during the offseason — from transportation to lodging to gas — but you'll have a heck of a time getting around and staying sane. If traffic and hourslong waits in line at amusements don't drive you crazy, your restless companions will. Do yourself a favor a book the road less traveled.

11. Failing to budget for extra costs on cruises and at resorts

While you might have snagged a great cruise or resort fare, it's important to keep in mind additional costs when budgeting for your trip. You never want to be caught off-guard when you're just about broke at the end of your journey. Avoid sticker shock by familiarizing yourself with all additional costs on a cruise or at the resort in advance.

"Gratuities are one of the top costs that can catch travelers by surprise," explains Colleen McDaniel, senior executive editor of CruiseCritic.com. "While it can be quite convenient not worrying about tipping while onboard, remember that gratuities are automatically added to your final bill, generally on a per person, per day basis. The total cost can add up to hundreds, maybe more, depending on the number of guests in your party and the number of days you're sailing."

Take that cost into account when budgeting for your trip to be sure that deal really is as great as it seems. Other added costs to consider include beverages, internet, shore excursions, and alternative dining. (See also: 9 Travel Expenses You Forgot to Budget For)

12. Overreliance on your mapping apps

I traveled to Costa Rica once where my husband and I rented a car to drive from our first stop at a resort below the Arenal Volcano to a beach resort a few hours away in Guanacaste. We decided to follow new friends on their newly planned scenic route, but when it turned out to be much longer than anticipated, we broke off from the group to get back on an easier path. We plugged the destination into Google Maps, which we assumed would choose the most efficient route, but our choice was ill-advised. The service cut us across the country through about 30 miles of very rocky and mountainous rural terrain that, frankly, scared us half to death.

Asad Raza, co-founder of the travel blog Off the Beaten Trails, offers a similar warning against relying too heavily on mapping services when you're in foreign territory.

"We planned to go to Hoota Cave in Oman and decided to check the route on Google Maps and follow it," he recalls. "Unfortunately, the route given was only accessible with a four-wheel drive and we just had a saloon car [that's a sedan in the U.S.]. It wasn't until we consulted with a local that we found the right route to follow. As a parent, I understand that reality can be terrifying. After all, what are you going to do with the kids all summer? Will they spend another summer break playing video games and watching TV?

I don't know about you, but my kids do better when they are active and entertained, and I aim to keep them busy. Here are some ways I'll be keeping my kids moving a little more this summer, and how you can, too. (See also: How to Save Money on Child Care This Summer)

1. Throw a water party

Kids of all ages like to play with water. I'm planning a couple of days when my kiddos can each invite a few friends over and go water-crazy for an afternoon. We'll have water guns, water balloons, the sprinklers will be going, an old school Slip 'N Slide, and more. It will be a blast, won't cost too much, and they will run around all afternoon.

2. Show them how to grow veggies

Having a garden takes some work, and I plan to put my kids in charge of (at least part of) mine. Digging, weeding, and watering are all active tasks and, even better, they get the kids out of the house. I'll give them each a small plot in the garden and put them in charge of picking what to grow and the actual planting, watering, weeding, etc. (See also: 13 Simple Gardening Skills Anybody Can Master)

3. Have them create a funny video

Rather than have my kids watch videos, they'll be making their own. I'll encourage them to write the script, come up with costumes and props, and even shoot as much of it as they can themselves. It's cheap, it will keep them busy, and they'll have to exercise both their brains and their bodies to get it done.

4. Cook together

Most kids don't know how to cook, but I've found that they usually like to learn. As long as they don't feel like it's a chore and they aren't left entirely to their own devices, most kids are surprised to learn just how easy and satisfying it can be to throw a meal together. Plus, you'll finally have help with meal planning and preparation!

5. Teach them a new sport

Learning doesn't have to take place inside the confines of school, and kids can remember this over the summer. Take the time to learn some new activity with your kids. Try stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking if you want to do something outside. Not only will you and your kids get out of the house and move, but you'll learn a new skill that will keep you active.

6. Wash the car

Going back to the idea that everyone loves to play in the water, put your kids to work washing cars, bikes, scooters, etc. The job has to be done anyway, so you might as well use it as an excuse to get your kids moving. They may resist at first, but after the hose comes on, most kids are more than happy to do these particular chores.

Like this article?
