I work in an industry where you better not even think about taking a week straight of vacation, and if you do, you better have your blackberry and laptop with you and be answering calls and email everyday. If not, you are branded as "lazy", "not a team player", a "clock watcher" and a whole assortment of other unsavory things.
My industry pays salary, so they think they "own" you. They tell you that you have to put in the hours it takes to "get the job done". So if you're doing the work of 3 people and have to stay 60-80 hours a week, oh well! Also, it doesn't work in reverse. If you can "get the job done" during the work day, you're still seen as "lazy" if you leave on time. God forbid you wanted to leave on time to battle your 1 1/2 - 2 hour commute to actually have a meal with your family. Time to move to Europe.
I invested in myself, I worked to put myself through college. I now have a business degree and anything that will give you an edge in the current economy is well worth the time and money in the longrun.

We spent 3 long years living 900 miles away from each other but we bought plane tickets whenever we could but spent a lot of time talking on our phones and webcams. It has been tough but completely worth it. We are engaged to be marry on June 9th, 2012.
The best investment I ever made was to purchase land and a mobile home. Paid them off within 12 years and now we live rent and mortgage-free. We would never be able to afford to pay the current rent or mortgage rates since my husband is retired and disabled from an injury on the job. And my chances of being hired for a job is slim to none because of my age and other reasons. So I am grateful to God for helping us make that investment in the first place. So even though we are living off his Social Security payments, it is enough to meet our needs, and maybe once in a while a few 'wants', since we don't have to pay for a place to live.
