I'm definitely going to try out Supercook. I'm too often guilty of staring at a smattering of random ingredients, shrugging my shoulders, and going shopping. Hopefully it will help me get better at cooking from what I have.

  • 10 Important Signs That Your Job Sucks   14 years 39 weeks ago

I haven't slept with a coworker, but everything else applies. I have worked the same job that I hate for 23 years, for a boss who hates my guts and tells me so on a daily basis. A good day is when I cry less than three times. I haven't had a raise since 2003, or a vacation since 2001. I haven't even had a three day weekend in over two years. The nature of the work is dull, repetitive, and tedious, and I'm not even good at it. Every time I take one of those career-counselor type quizzes, it returns my actual job title as the worst possible job for my personality type and skill set.

Unfortunately, this is a family business, and I am stuck for life. Any suggestions?

I have two boys under 2, so I have several small-earning streams of income. Every little bit helps!
My husband has a full-time job, we also do the following for money:
    -Collect and recycle cans
    -Mystery shopping
    -Online surveys
    -Piano lessons

My husband and I both have full time jobs plus we both work part-time as ushers at the arena in town. The checks from the second jobs go into an account designated for vacations so we can afford a couple of nice vacations each year.

  • Living Without Air-Conditioning Can Save Big Bucks This Summer   14 years 39 weeks ago

No thanks. I would not want to be without air conditioning. The way houses are built anymore it is way too hard to get air circulating and cross-ventilation. I would rather not go back to the stone ages, if we did we might as well live in a mud hut, burn buffalo dung and die at the age of 40.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have Multiple Sources of Income?   14 years 40 weeks ago

We have four main sources of income: 1. Main job, 2. residual income from home business, 3. wife's music teaching business, 4. Military reserve pay, 4. Rental property income.

I have a full time job as a bookkeeper, which I work 4 days a week and consider my "bread and butter". On weeknights/weekends I write personal finance and tax articles for my own blog, and guest spots for other websites.

During tax season (Jan - April) I am a Tax Specialist for a prominent tax office.
My unearned income includes oil & gas royalty, and some interest income from CD's and other investments.

We have rental income, cell tower income, farm income and investments, plus my husband has a job. But we're by no means rich. It's almost to the point that we're "property rich and cash poor."

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have Multiple Sources of Income?   14 years 40 weeks ago

I have several side hustles, in addition to my regular job: I fill out surveys; I do business and medical research; I sell stuff on Amazon, eBay and Craigslist; and I have a big yard sale every year. Am trying to monetize my blog, too.

It feels safer to have lots of sources!

  • Netflix Pricing Changes: What Now?   14 years 40 weeks ago

You've mentioned some concerns from a business perspective that I think may eventually affect the Netflix service: 1) Does the company have an infrastructure that it can't support? (Making two price changes so quickly makes me think that they don't have a good handle on operating costs or customer patterns; or maybe Netflix was testing resistance to price increases with the dollar increase in November, before the big announcement later); 2) Did the company realize that the pricing went from basic services at a nominal cost to pricing that people have to consider more carefully? (not being able to anticipate or sort through that issue before initiating a price change makes me wonder about the management's thought processes makes me wonder also).

Anyway, figuring out costs for movies, etc. is a moving target, as charges and deal structures change. It is good to think about multiple options, as you mentioned. Thanks for your comments.

  • Netflix Pricing Changes: What Now?   14 years 40 weeks ago

I agree that the pricing itself is not necessarily a deal-breaker. But it may prompt many people to consider other options, depending on how much they use the service.

What makes me concerned is that there were 2 price increases (small, then large) in less than a year, making me wonder if future price increases may be in store or service cut-backs.

  • Ask The Readers: Do You Have Multiple Sources of Income?   14 years 40 weeks ago

I am retired, but had a good salary that allowed me to pay off several houses when I worked. have a rental house in OKC (inherited); I have another rental house in SLC (purchased). I have interest income from CDs and fixed-rate accounts. I have money in stocks that I hope will give income in future, but for now it is all reinvested. I could draw a pension from Oklahoma State, but will wait until I'm older as it will be more income then. I will draw also from Utah State and social security (theoretically), also from the NHS and from the UK state pension, but that is in the future also. None of these are large sources of income, but together they make for a good lifestyle. For now, my husband draws an NHS pension and gives me the 'housekeeping' and I pull across rental income as and when necessary. There have been times in the past when I worked waitress jobs at the weekend in addition to my full time secretarial job, but most of the time I went to university at night school to get qualifications that allowed me to get better paid jobs. Now days we garden, buy second hand, walk & cycle and generally live frugally so that we can remain debt free and still travel.

  • How to Make Moonshine   14 years 40 weeks ago

    Guest,
Another bad side effect to holding it that long, the yeast imparts odd flavours after a while. Since most moonshine is made from wild yeast (floating in the air) you have a tendency to have more flavour from them. The longer you sit on the trubs, the worse it gets. Since it is so easy to make, just make it as you need it. I had read that the old time rum makers would make rum in the summer and hold it till the season came to drinking it, winter. Good thing we can just drink it when we want!!!

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   14 years 40 weeks ago

I received a card yesterday. As someone who is very guarded with her credit, I was worried my information was submitted to an unauthorized company as a result of my recent home purchase.

After reading these comments, I realize it was a solitication request and my personal information was not compromised. However, it still rubbed me the wrong way. I simply chose to permanently opt out of preapproved/prescreened requests by completing the online form located at https://www.optoutprescreen.com. If choosing to permanently remove yourself from lists, you must also submit a signed copy of the form via snail mail.

  • Buy Your Groceries European-Style   14 years 40 weeks ago

I'm in college right now without a car, so I shop very much like this. I make sure to always have the staples (I often have a 3 item list of things like "flour, yeast, butter" so that I don't forget them) and then I pick up a few vegetables a few times a week. Fridge space is at a premium, and being a college student, money wasted on uneaten food is positively painful. This allows me to make some sort of vegetable and pasta dish or soup with ease. It probably helps that I find grocery shopping relaxing and stress relieving.

  • How to Make Moonshine   14 years 40 weeks ago

It's possible, but it's not trivially easy.

There are bacteria (called acetobacters) that consume alcohol, turning it into acetic acid. They're what turn wine into vinegar.

Wine makers do essentially what you're talking about. (That is, they save the fermentation product. They don't distill it, of course. They just age it before bottling.)

The trick is to keep acetobacters away from the fermentation product. But that's pretty tough—acetobacters are everywhere, including floating in the air. So, you have to keep air away from your fermentation product. And you have to do it right from the start. That's complex, because the yeast produce carbon dioxide, so you can't just seal up your fermentation container—it'd explode.

Wine makers use a device called an air lock, that will allow the carbon dioxide to escape without letting the acetobacters get in the fermenter. Any book on wine making will describe what that is and how it's used.

  • Not Rich Enough and Not Poor Enough   14 years 40 weeks ago

You could do all of that stuff, or... you could become an Australian citizen, join the defence force and study at the best Aussie universities at zero cost to you - they even pay for your accommodation and food, as well as giving you $25,000 annual salary, minimum (our cost of living is high and this is considered a low income, but your basics, including top health cover for you and your family, are covered by the Defence Dept, so this is play money). Best of all, you graduate totally debt-free.

The only down side is that you are in the defence force. And you have to live in Canberra...
