I always buy cake and brownie mixes when they are deeply discounted. You know just a few pennies per box. Then make them for parties and picnics like the 4th of July. I also keep my eye on deals for paper cups, plates and utensils. While we usually use our own dishes if throwing a party indoors, it's nice to go the is disposable route when we're outside. That stuff can really add up so it helps to buy in advance when possible.
We celebrate by eating REALLY well, but at home, or going out for lunch at our favorite places. If we do go out for dinner to celebrate, it is about once a year, we save up, and really go to a nice place. But otherwise, for 1/3 of an entree at a nice place, we can have filet mignon and all the trimmings at home!
Excellent article, it is crazy how so many of us take our local library for granted. In times of need it is the first place I go for information and entertainment. For example, when my internet reception goes out or my printer dies on me, I know I can quickly run to the library to connect to the internet or use their printers to print out whatever I need for free. It is also a great place to take kids on a rainy day and teach them to appreciate the art of reading books. I don't know a little kid who doesn't feel special the day they receive their first library card. It's the same feeling a teen gets when they finally get their first driver's license. It's like a key to a whole new world.
Yep, I agree about the staying hydrated but you can also get too hydrated. I read an article (I'll include it when can locate it) about the importance of urine color (sorry I know that's gross) but it's a good way to not get under or over hydrated. This expert said to shoot for very light yellow, clear is not good but very yellow also bad. I really think more accurately it's about having the proper electrolytes once when hospitalized for heat exhaustion the thing that was the worst was the migraine, after about 20 minutes of IV fluid, I felt better than ever. The nurse said that it contained electrolytes like magnesium, sodium and potassium. Also, someone mentioned tension headaches and I found my tension headaches went away when I switched to a latex pillow with cotton lining gives the best support and has great air flow for those who get "hot head" when they sleep.
I do agree about the aspirin. I'm bad at taking supplements and pills regularly but low dose baby aspirin really helps when taken daily (important to take with a whole glass of room temp water as problems occur when aspirin comes in direct contact with the stomach lining). I could never give up coffee either but I'm careful to drink at least a 1/2 a cup of milk with it (magnesium), drink plenty of water and include a banana for breakfast. Since doing this coffee has ceased to be an issue for me, thankfully. :)
I just had a very bad experience with GFK, I applied and they had me pay for a drug test and back ground check that cost me 30 bucks, I would get it back after doing 2 audits. I was to be paid 130.00 to audit Best Buy. It ended up taking me 15.5 hours to just do the audit and another 5 hours to input the report and pictures. The scheduler didn't tell me to use Google Chrome and so I was kicked out of the report online and had to "next" through to where I was kicked out, I was ready to quit, it was so frustrating, but the scheduler begged me to finish, offering me a 75 dollar bonus, so I did. I then was sent an email that said they are refusing to pay me because I stayed in the store a couple of hours longer than I was suppossed to, even though the store manager told me it was fine with him. There are places in their briefing notes saying that if you do such and such you wont be paid, but it never said I wouldnt be paid for staying longer, if that is the case you should be warned. I think this is just an excuse not to pay me . The company has completely cut me off from contacting them through email, but I plan on telling my story on every blog there is and by taking them to small claims court, I spent almost 3 days on that job, paid for the gas to go out there twice and they just cut me off. I am also going to write to Best Buy and let them know what kind of company they are using to do their audits!
I would not recommend that anyone work for GFK, it is way too much work for the money and there is no gaurantee that you will be paid.
#33 is a quote by Will Rogers. Just because celebrates use others quotes doesn't mean they should get credit for them. Maybe you should do a little more fact checking before posting something like this, I'm sure there are a lot more mistakes like this.
I get pain and nausea from a different source, but I second this. Just give in to that and you feel so much better. As awful as it sounds, if you do it enough, you get pretty good at it, and it's not so bad then.
why should pressure points be bizarre, they work very well. also calcium-magnesium, as supplements for headaches. there are so many other non-toxic ways to get ride of headaches. to me, the real bizarre, is people taking over the counter drugs that are toxic to the body, especially the liver,at the first sign of discomfort.
I am a fan of credit unions but my husband is not. He wants to stick with his bank because he and his family have banked there forever... Don't really see the logic in that and I think banks are evil too!
Because the difference is that a car might be under a couple thousand dollars, but homes are underwater by 10s if not 100s of thousands of dollars. Quite the difference.
I'm a 30 yo veteran of OIF #1 and I was going to school and drawing GI bill money to keep ourselves housed (wife and 4 kids) I'll take any kind of job even for Mr. Orilley if it means KEEPing my house and not becomeing a homeless veteran... SERVICEMEMBER0123433 got it right.. freedom is NOT free by a long shot..
That is why I always try to tell people to never put all their trust in the computers, They just are not the kind of thing you want to put too much confidence! There are always problems with them!
Money Pit-what a classic! And Enron is one of the best documentaries out there, hands down. Friends with Money is another one to check out: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0436331/
I didn't like Jennifer Aniston before I saw this flick, but I have to say Nicole Holofcener never makes a mistake with her casting choices.
It's pretty depressing when you find a charity that you love and then they turn around and ruin it by being super-aggressive in their fundraising. Especially when it happens right away - "You just sent us $50 - please feel free to write another check right now!".
Some of my favorite charities are guilty of this. Well, formerly favorite.
The overstuffed overhead bin thing definitely makes me crazy. Half the time I've been on a flight in the last year, they've had to check carry-ons because space ran out in the bins.
I'd love to hear other ways consumer could help fix air travel -- any ideas, readers?
Very good recommendations. I've moved over 30 times, both long and short distances, and have a few additional ideas to ease moving stress.
1. Eliminate "stuff" no longer used: from make-up and bathroom items to books and CDs/DVDs, not too mention kitchen gadgetry.
2. Box up by room, then by furniture contents; i.e., entertainment center, bookshelf, etc. Then mark each box stating entertainment center, bookshelf, etc. I've gone as far as indicating on the box which side of the entertainment center, LOL. This really helps in unpacking.
3. Mark your final box as "last box". This box holds all the last items; flatware, plates, cups, and any other last used items such as box cutters, moving tapes, etc. So when you get to your new place that "last box" becomes your "first box" to unpack.
4. When unloading the truck, place the boxes in the appropriate room; i.e., bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room, etc. No need to move a box 3 or 4 times before it gets to the correct room. Save yourself time and energy by doing this.
5. If you are moving pets, please don't leave them behind for the last trip. I only did this once and when I saw how frightened they were, it broke my heart. They think they'll be left behind. Now the pets and their "things"move on the first trip. Place them in a closed room with their "things" and food/water and they'll hear the activity in the other rooms so they will be comforted when they hear your voice. The results will be a happier pet and less stress for you.
I really like the reminder about charities. I once donated a small amount -- $25 -- to a charity, and I'm pretty convinced that they spent at least half of it sending me mail for the next three years! It was so frustrating to feel like I paid them to waste paper on me, not to further their cause.

We do "potluck" style BBQ's so each person ends up only having to bring one item.

I think its time for a remake of Brewsters Millions.
Call me crazy, but Pretty Woman would round out this list nicely.
I think War of the Roses could have been added to this list.

you have not had a life for food was scarce. some days i would have no food at all. i rather have more than nothings.

You can trade coupons through forums, local trading clubs, or with friends and family. It is not legal to sell them, not even "for a handling fee".

Struggling in Michigan....
I like "Confesions of a Shopaholic" and "The Other Guys."
Confessions does a great job of dealing (pretty realistically) with the ramifications of overspending and having too much debt.
The Other Guys doesn't seem like it would be a movie about money, or anything other than a stupid Will Ferrell comedy, but it's actually quite good.
Don't watch Michael Moore's money...unless you want to become dumber.

Oh good call Meg. I love that movie, shameful I let that one slide. "I don't care about losing all the money. It's losing all the stuff."
