  • "Cash for clunkers" bill passed by Congress - what does it mean for consumers?   16 years 45 weeks ago

So let me get this straight. since the economy is bad, the government is using tax dollars to junk perfectly good running cars that could be sold to needy people who cant afford new hybrids, so "wealthy" people (anyone who can afford a new hybrid) get part of their new car paid for with my tax dollars?

    as for being green....
how is forcing the (unclean) melting of these mixed materials (cars) green? a couple MPG increase isn't "green" enough to offset the carbon footprint of manufacturing a new car! This isn't about being green, it's about control as usual. all of the cars this program applys to already have to pass emissions test proving they run clean every 2 years. I will not be trading in my (very reliable) '93 explorer. (new similar sized vehicles only get marginally if any better mileage anyway!)

Commenter 1: This was the meanest article I have ever read! I am so upset that I need to go lie down. Why would you write this and publish it? It's so mean and horrible.

Commenter 2: What are you, Commenter 1, an idiot? This is meant to be funny.

Commenter 1: No, YOU are an idiot for writing a comment about how I am an idiot. If you don't like something, then you don't have to read it, just like you didn't have to read my comment about how mean this article is. But you did read my comment, and then you commented on how you didn't like what I wrote, which is mean and dumb of you. You are a horrible person and I hope you die, so that you don't hurt nice, wonderful people like me.

Christ, cognitive dissonance, anyone? Why can't frugal people be funny, too?

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   16 years 45 weeks ago

Thank you Kelly for you useable advise on prepaid cards. I just received an unsolicited netSpend card in mail. The bank fees are unreasonable and so are the netSpend fees. I do online shopping and I send money to "young" relatives in other states via prepaid cards but stopped because of the fees...I will check out the WalMart and the GreenDot prepaid cards you mentioned.
Thank you again for useable information.

  • 47 Simple Ways To Waste Money   16 years 45 weeks ago

I love anti-advice! I linked to a post written in the same style last week that had me chuckling. The internet is a funny place - half of the people are so mean that I can barely believe what they'll type, and another 40% is so sensitive that a cheeky article makes them weep into their milk.

That leaves 10% of the internet users/readers to keep the thing afloat. I, of course, fall into the mean category, so I'm not one of the 10%.

  • Good Debt, Bad Debt   16 years 45 weeks ago

Great article! This is a very interesting approach in communicating the idea on how one should think about debt. I do believe that any kind of debt should be avoided. There are always ways in which one can cut down the amount of debt or accumulation the of it.

  • How to save BIG   16 years 45 weeks ago

I completely agree with your point. Tackling the large expenses first can help a great deal in saving up big for the future. People tend to get frugal on small things but forget about the large recurring expenses that pile on huge amounts of debt which becomes difficult to handle over time.

  • Suze Orman Tells Us To Pay ONLY The Minimum On Credit Cards. Wait, What?!   16 years 45 weeks ago

I totally agree. Suze Orman is not a financial advisor in any sense of the term. Her life's work is writing and selling books. If you are intelligent enough to read your CC bill, you will quickly and easily see the interest rate and how much you are charged each month for carrying a balance and what a miniscule portion actually goes to principle if you make only the minimum payment. Stashing that 8 month savings will mean very little when you find yourself having to also pay a CC out of it. You cannot just pay your "usual bills" from the savings and ignore the CC companies. They will come after you and making your house and car payments will mean very little if the CC companies force you into bankruptcy and take away your home and cars. I have read a lot of things by Suze Orman and often wonder if "orman" isn't just a typo and it should read "moron."

  • Look Out Consumers: Debt Collections Get Scarier   16 years 45 weeks ago

Last year my mom started getting phone calls from a collection agency (I'd moved out, but I use my parents' address and phone numbers as a permanent contact info, since I tend to move a lot) about a $400+ bill from the university hospital which was connected to the university I was studying at, at the time.

I called them back, asking them for peculiars: what was done? When did I go? I would've automatically pegged this as a scam but for the fact that the red tape at the university is more like red cement--thick and impossible to get through. Plus I'd been getting treatment through the student health center, but that was supposed to be covered under the "fees" category of my tuition. The guy on the phone couldn't tell me. Smelling "scam" I then called the hospital, and, true to my recollection, the hospital did not have me listed anywhere, and certainly did not have me owing $400. So we ignored the guy, and as far as I know he's never called back.

  • Writing for Money on the Interwebs   16 years 45 weeks ago

Hi, just started reading this website, although I've heard a lot about it on msn money, and really enjoying yours and others' articles. I don't know if this fits here since it seems like you're detailing more writing contests then just getting paid to write. But I thought I'd go ahead and mention this to you and your readers.

There is a place called reviewstream.com. I've been writing for it only a few days now, but I like how it's set up. You don't have to do any complicated registering...they really only ask that you have a gmail account and a paypal account...you can review ANYTHING you want: books, cosmetics, travel, pets, casino, ect...and if they like what you write, as in it's informative and not vague and so forth, they'll pay you 2 dollars an article at this moment in time. I'm sure they will raise or lower it as time goes by, but right now, it's 2 dollars an article for the ones they'll accept, and if they refuse for any reason, they have another option called 'the bulk rate' which they'll pay 1/5th of the 2 bucks (40 cents), for the article.

People can also read it and if they like it, they can vote YES to it, and you'll get an additional 10 cents per vote. So if you have a small fan base already, it can quickly add up. You need to have a total of 50 bucks to cash out of the account, but from what I read from other writers, it's done very quickly once you are ready to request payment. I'm still only at 20 bucks or so, but have submitted a lot of reviews which hopefully will be only a few more days before I can cash out.

Anyhoo, thought you guys might be interested in checking it out and getting paid for your opinion on kitty litter and trashbags (which I have also reviewed, lol)

    By the bye, great article!

  • Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro webcam: why doesn't 4 stars tell the full story?   16 years 45 weeks ago

I have to believe sometimes 2 machines just arent meant to compliment one another.

For example the DiNovo edge, LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. Had 2 friends buy cheaper keyboards, one has a roller ball mouse that floats the other doesnt even keep up with the keys as you type both blew $100 and resorted back to the old keyboards. Neither would spend the $200 today for the DiNovo (whose price remained firm almost 3 yrs after being released).

Now I love my DiNovo, I surf the internet on my 42" widescreen Olevia TV. I picked it up used on Craigslist for $350. Of course in hindsight I love my setup, I could never sit at a desk to surf the web but using a huge widescreen TV poses some problems. The resoloution is never right, what the TV needs to be set at to keep the picture focused always conflicts with the recomended display websites suggest you use........biggest offender yahoo mail always switches automatically to classic veiw and I dont know why the problem? Next is displaying the yahoo homespage makes the fonts and content pretty tiny and I prefer to sit halfway across the room on the couch so I have learned to enlarge the display down in the right corner but never fails I have to eenlarge and decrease most pages and now my windows open in half sizes and so on.

In the end, I have somehow with no idea what I was doing set up a to die for homes theater PC. In 6 months the PC crashed and I learned Sony no longer made towers so replacing mine was n ot an option. I dont care how cheap systems are or how mmany new bells and whistles they offer I took my vaio tower to get fixed for $100 at best buy. The last thing I was going to try was a new computer with my current setup. Sometimes unless you have to buy the newer better product you should stick with the one thats been dependable and save time and money.

oh yeah can you believe the DiNOvo is selling under $100 on ebay....................was worth the price no matter what

  • 6 Options if You're Underwater on Your Mortgage   16 years 45 weeks ago

Here's the thing that people like Kelja do not understand.

There are those who bought a home hoping to flip it and get rich.

And then there are those, with a family, who did everything they could to get their family into a home - to do the right thing.

It is not my fault or doing that the banking industry made what amounts to fraudulent loans, running up the prices while Wall Street partied on the profits. To me this is no different than insider trading.

Where my family is concerned we survived a house fire with a home we were renting. Given what rentals were going for in our town we couldn't justify paying that - we felt we had to make the move to buying or to leave.

The point here is simply that not *everyone* sought to make a quick buck and now we're looking to get bailed out. My feeling - especially after receiving a letter today from our HELOC that our line of credit is frozen AFTER we've paid off $40,000 of that in the last 3 months - is we've been screwed and the banks will screw anyone they can. The banks, the investors and everyone involved in the big money party profited - now I'm supposed to foot that bill because the cat's out of the bag?

To hell with that Kelja. If you gambled your money in the stock market, that's one thing. This ain't the same - not at all.

  • Not driving your less-frugal friends crazy   16 years 45 weeks ago

Yes, there are people who freeload. I won't let it change my offers of service and sharing. It is pretty easy to determine who does and does not get the concept of mutual mooching that must exist for both parties to get the benefits of sharing.
