  • Selling Your Groupon Coupons   15 years 25 weeks ago

By the time you go through the refund process with groupon from filing your case to actually receiving a turnaround you will have already forgotten about wanting your money back. I personally use 3 main websites… http://www.CoupRecoup.com http://www.dealsgoround.com and http://www.Skeedka.com all three offer consumers a very easy to use and safe platform for re-selling unused deal vouchers, you can also search for great deals that you might have missed once upon a time. The only difference between the three sites above is that skeedka.com offers some added value offering its consumers a variety of options to sell their deal, you can actually make use of an auctioning platform in addition to the traditional proven conventional resale methods.

  • Ask the Readers: Desktop or Laptop?   15 years 25 weeks ago

I have both a desktop and netbook, preferring the desktop for real work, and using the netbook for web surfing and light work. In the past, I did everything on the notebook, but using a desktop seemed to increase my productivity.

Laptop for sure! I like that it is portable - whether in my house or across town or across the country; I feel like i can bring my work wherever I go and I can get out of the house and still do work at any time. I really like the freedom a laptop allows.

  • What to Know When Renting a Moving Truck   15 years 25 weeks ago

Yes, Penske and ONLY Penske. I was the worst moving experience of my life with U-Haul, and they did not give me the size of truck that I requested, as stated in your article. The truck was also filthy, infested with bugs, and they don't let you choose what location you will rent from, so I had to drive 20 miles out into the middle of nowhere (past more reputable looking dealers) and rent it from people literally living/working in a shack.

Then, long story short, someone siphoned gas out of my truck after I dropped it off in my new city, U-Haul said that it happened all the time but they couldn't prove it, so they charged me for gas.

I got a refund for the gas after contacting customer service, but I will never, ever use them again. I tell everyone I know to use Penske.

Having done two cross-country moves with Penske, I think I can answer for Doug. Penske gives you trucks in excellent condition for one-way moves. They "retire" trucks earlier than others. (Most other companies won't give you their good trucks if they know they aren't coming back to their particular location.)

They were the cheapest price for both of my moves (3 years apart). Also, they offer a 10% discount for reserving it and a 12% discount if you are a AAA member (I signed up just for this discount and it was greater than the membership fee.)

I have driven 4000 miles in a Penske towing a car carrier and all my possessions. I have never had a problem with the vehicle. Once you ask around a little about other companies you realize how rare that is. I'll only rent from Penske in the future (hopefully not needing to for awhile though).

  • Should I Take a Job That Pays Less Than Unemployment?   15 years 25 weeks ago

    Go with the heart.

  • Should I Take a Job That Pays Less Than Unemployment?   15 years 25 weeks ago

Absent motivation such as impressing a potential future employer, it doesn't make sense to do anything other than collect the unemployment. What this is saying that people are willing to hire only if you are so desperate for work that you will take such a low pay. Right now, you are not quite that desperate. You are getting some insurance coverage for insurance you have paid for. And you can use that time to make yourself more marketable.

Use a mix of white vinegar and tap water - equal parts - in a spray bottle to remove wrinkles for silk and/or cotton shirts. Hang the shirt on a hanger, spray the wrinkles until saturated, and as the shirt dries, the wrinkles fall out. No worries about the strong vinegar smell, because the smell dissappears as the shirt dries. I've used this tip successsfully with cotton/tencel blends, rayon and 100% silk.

Desktop, by far. Much more power for the same money!

  • 20 Signs That You Were Raised By TRUE Money-Savers   15 years 25 weeks ago

People say this list came out of the Depression, but it didn't. I was born in 1980 and I have done all of the above and more.

Once a year I got school clothes from money I earned myself. They were always used, and that was it. If they didn't fit, I stopped eating til they did. That's harsh it seems, but that is the truth.

At 10 I learned to hand mow a lawn, with a push mower. That's when I started to earn money. Even though my parents got plenty of monetary aid from the government, they never had enough for clothes, shoes, field trips, or even school pictures. My money went to that.

In the winter time I had no income, so at 10, I woke up at 5 am to shovel snow from the side walks in front of servicemen's homes. They were often grateful for the morning help. I made from 50 cents to a dollar a sidewalk. This often got me new socks, boots, or undies. (I never bought those used)

When I couldn't rustle up enough money for hair ties, I used any fabric I could tied neatly around my head. I called it my head band.

Before I learned to sew I used safety pins and clear finger nail polish fished from dumpsters to fix my clothing. The nail polish fixed any hose, the safety pin most small snags. From 11 to 22, I kept 1 flannel shirt, by effectively sewing it together with safety pins. Every seam was held together by various safety pins I had found and salvaged over the years. My new husband bought me a new one, on the condition I toss out the old one. It was hard to part with it.

At 14 I was given a pair of jungle boots. I kept them until I was 29. They were still in good condition when I gave them to a boy that had messed up sneakers. The insides were awful on your feet if you wore socks, so I ran around sock-less in them.

My awful childhood prepared me well for poverty in adulthood. To make ends meet, I have had to do a lot of strange things.

I have sewn by hand clothing, from adult clothes. I even patched together blankets, to make a sort of crazy quilt.

I have sewn leather shoes back together, oiled, and re-buckled them. They looked brand new after.

I learned to bulk buy food, OTC, toilet paper, trash bags, shampoo, etc... as a matter of survival.

We glean trees from our yard and our neighbors yard. There are some beautiful plums around here. I did plan to preserve them but, the children got to them too fast.

We garden every year. We save seeds. We raise chickens. We compost. We catch rain water. We are looking at going into solar.

I mend all the children's clothes, with most garment outlasting my children and being able to be passed on to cousins. I usually have to mend a garment once a year.

We save bacon grease if we can afford bacon.

Our diet consists of a lot of homemade food.

I can make muffins about 20 different ways, with or without eggs or milk. The same could be said about spaghetti, and soup.

We don't do the mayo sandwich with a family our size and finance level, it's too expensive. Usually our brad is biscuits, that cost about 5 cents each as compared to the 8 cent piece of cheap bread.

We don't even have a phone hook up, we use google voice.

Also, we use a wood stove. Can't beat free fuel. Yes, my kids get...put another layer on, alot.

Apple Cider Vinegar is the one that works on reflux. The others just hurt.

  • Ask the Readers: Desktop or Laptop?   15 years 25 weeks ago

I currently have an aging media-monster laptop. Essentially it was the worst of both worlds: not powerful enough to (effectively) run my engineering software, and not (pleasantly) portable due to being both heavy and lacking good battery life. And it was pricey to boot.

Lesson learned. Now, for the price of another laptop, I'm building a desktop with the specs I need, and getting a netbook. I end up with more power AND more portability.

It's also worth noting that while a desktop can be upgraded, a laptop MUST be replaced if it fails or falls short. To those who need to 'replace' your desktop, consider adding more ram, another hard drive, or upgrading the video card. It's really not as scary as you think. It's actually not scary at all.

  • Ask the Readers: Desktop or Laptop?   15 years 25 weeks ago

Our home office is in the corner of the dining room. It's compact and organized, but I've never liked having people over for dinner with that big gray computer lurking in the background. (Think Thanksgiving family photos with a 19-inch monitor behind your head.)

When it started dying, I started shopping! We replaced it with a laptop and wireless mouse that can easily be hidden on the desk's slide-out keyboard tray, or tucked in with the place mats in a buffet drawer. It looks much more clutter-free without all those desktop components in plain sight.

We now have three laptops - one for the family, and one for each parent's work. And, come to think of it, we rarely use them at that desk - love the portability. Never again will we buy a desktop!

    @ Wayward
Pods are a good way to go as well as Door to Door. Just remember that you're responsible for loading them and it is worth it to hire professionals. While you don't have to worry about them accidentally offloading your belongings at someone else's home they also will not be responsible if things break because it's not secured properly.

  • 5 Low-Cost, Low-Maintenance Alternatives to the Family Dog   15 years 25 weeks ago

I have 2 small corrections to this list, from my personal ownership experience,Hermit crabs are actually very high maintenance.Hermit crabs can die very easily due to a need for a very specialized hand made diet and the fact that they have gills but can also drown,so I would not place them on this list.

  • 6 Options if You're Underwater on Your Mortgage   15 years 25 weeks ago

    kelja,
first of all, not everyone that has to "bailout" bought a house that they can't afford! For many, other circumstances have come into play. Being that the economy sucks, people have lost their jobs, taken paycuts, been furloughed ect. So before you so quickly condemn them for bailing out, learn the facts.

I have done so before, and will continue calling bullshit on the acid reflux tip - I'm thrilled if it works for some people, but it doesn't work for many. It is great for setting dye on cheap blue jeans, though. Also, hell, I just like it in my food!

I soak the shower head in vinegar when hard water deposits build up. Soak for one hour, then wipe. Goodbye calcium deposits!!

  • 10 Weird and Wonderful Ways to Use Vinegar   15 years 25 weeks ago

As well as being great on fish'n chips, vinegar cleans aluminum wheels. It'll make your alloys sparkle, bling bling.

My kidswill tell you that vinegar is awesome for volcano science experiments too.

    Thanks.
