  • I Finally Canceled Comcast Cable…Before It Hurt More Than My Wallet   16 years 7 weeks ago

The sign my late husband had made says, "No matter what you are selling, including your religion, GO AWAY!!" It's worked like a charm for years now.

My husband generally tries to fix things. We live in a rural area and do not have a lot of choices of repair persons to call. Often times when we have called someone out to fix a problem my husband has discovered he could have done a better job himself.

  • Kick that Cell Phone Contract: Save with a Prepaid Plan   16 years 7 weeks ago

If you are looking for a prepaid plan to save you money on your cell phone then I would suggest trying out Net10. I switched about a year ago and have saved a lot of money. They offer plans for only 10 cents a minute for nationwide coverage and a good selection of phones.

Or just get an aquarium heater from your local petshop. They're cheap enough to buy. iIt'll ferment anyway; just not at night, so it will take a lot longer.

    Warman

Get a chest freezer or beer fridge. You will need to add an external control system to regulate the temps to the fermenting ones. There are as many ways to build this as there are people who need one. You could insulate a large wooden box or plastic storage bin and put a window AC unit on it, too.

We kind of, sort of cheat because we rent, so when an appliance breaks, we call our landlord. And my husband is a PC tech, so we often barter his services for other things we need. Really, if we can't find someone who knows how to do what we need (which is unlikely) who is willing to trade it for a nice dinner in our home (our friends value time together over money) or a modest fee, then we think about calling a professional. Actually, we just tend to not buy things that require maintenance we can't do ourselves. That way, we don't have the frustrating 2 days of attempting to solve problems that someone else could fix in half an hour. It's better for our marriage AND our budget. :)

  • Are You Saving For Your Child's College Education?   16 years 7 weeks ago

I have to agree with you Ben, paying out right for college is expensive. Student loans area also expensive because of the interest, iphone cover

The best way is to actually start saving from the day your kid is born. That way you will have the money by then and not have to worry about saving up or borrowing extra from you home loan, etc.

  • Cheap and Simple Sunburn Remedies That Really Work   16 years 7 weeks ago

my friend tried the vinegar solution, and said the burn worsened. She then applied egg whites to the burn. your suppose to seperate the egg whites then apply to the burn, and when the egg whites start to try on you go and wash it off. I've never tried this, but she said it worked for her

  • Are You Saving For Your Child's College Education?   16 years 7 weeks ago

Saving money for your kids education is more important than everyone things. You should just open up a long term deposit account and dump money in there when you kid is born once your child is ready for university, you should have saved up more than enough

  • 5 International Cities to Boost Your Standard of Living for Less   16 years 7 weeks ago

I've lived in Thailand for most of the past six years. Bangkok is still a great city to live in, especially if you don't mind the steamy hot weather. You'll need to keep yourself updated on the political situation for certain but hopefully once the situation is fully resolved, the city will return to its previous heights.
The trick with BKK is to wake up early and enjoy the parks and cafes, get a little work in and then have a nice siesta during the middle of the day. The evenings can be balmy but the nightlife and dining options more than make up for it.

  • Moments in the "Garden of Eatin"   16 years 7 weeks ago

You simply can't go wrong by going either organic, or by subbing fresh fruits and veggies for meat in your life.

Both from a health standpoint and a cost standpoint.

    Kudos to the author!

  • Moments in the "Garden of Eatin"   16 years 7 weeks ago

Thanks for the clarification. It's definitely not an exact science but the data, plugged in with an estimated 270 million consumers of age, paring down into Memorial Day in the aggregate, gave me that ballpark figure, still a guestimate. As you know 100 to 400 is a huge variance when you're talking about 270 million to $300 consumers. Also thanks for the caution on Nitpicking as the resident Kunta whippnig boy by commenters on Wisebread over the years, I've developed a polymer-grade skin LOL:) Have a Happy Memorial Day.

  • How to Make Moonshine   16 years 7 weeks ago

I have a question for you, My wife really doesn't want me to store my "mixes" in the house any more while ferminting so, with that in mind I was wondering if I could store it in my shed??? It veries in temp. 90's+ in the days and as low as 60's right now during the night. Will this temp change mess up the mixes or does the temp need to be more regulated even.??? Thanks.

As an American expatriate living in Donetsk, Ukraine, I'd say that the elephant in this particular room has to do with visa requirements in any intended overseas living site. It may be relatively easy, or it can be extremely difficult to get a resident visa--but it is definitely something that should be researched early in the process for any place you may be considering.

Assuming you can get a visa, one area I would look at is Crimea. Many areas on the Black Sea are very much like California in many ways--quite beautiful--and the cost of living is far less than Prague, for example. (Americans, Canadians, and various other countries' citizens can travel here for up to 90 days without a visa at all, by the way, so you can definitely check it out if you wish.

Another Eastern European country I would take a look at is Bulgaria. Very cheap to live in, and as a newly admitted country in the EU you may find travel and living there pretty simple. Others like the Baltic countires--Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, for similar reasons.

  • Kick that Cell Phone Contract: Save with a Prepaid Plan   16 years 7 weeks ago

I realize this won't work for everyone but I hardly ever make voice calls so the T-Mobile 1000 min actually lasts me an entire year. Plus I can check voice mail from another phone such as my office and not pay for those calls. I have a Nexus One and use all the features when on wifi. One thing the author forgot to mention is Google Voice. I can send and receive text messages through there and give out that number to people I don't want calling my phone. Google Voice takes voice messages, converts to text and sends me an email when I've received something. Only a few people have my actual phone#, everything else goes to Google Voice. The downside is that I don't have 24/7 data plan, but since I'm online all day at work and on wifi at home, it all works for me. Plus I found a GPS service that downloads maps to my phone so it's useful even without a data plan.

  • 9 Money Saving Reasons to Buy a Food Dehydrator   16 years 7 weeks ago

Has anyone tried using a toaster oven to dehydrate food? (Set on the lowest temperature of 200 degrees F, of course.)

I haven't tried this, but I'm wondering if someone else has, as I also have limited kitchen/counter space.

  • I Finally Canceled Comcast Cable…Before It Hurt More Than My Wallet   16 years 7 weeks ago

I don't know so much about rots the brain - it depends on what you're watching. Mythbusters is pretty good as are lot of the Discovery/History and occasionally DIY programs. Movies are also worthwhile entertainment.

On the other hand, mindless TV viewing sucks away an enormous amount of time. Americans who complain that they they have no time to clean their houses, pay their bills, go to school or do any number of things they want to should think long and hard about paying for cable TV.

And I'm afraid I have a hard time getting all riled up about cable TV as a consumer issue. Just stop paying poorly run companies present 90% crappy programming riddled with ads for stuff you don't need. No long term contracts, no competitors. Just money in your pocket and time on your hands. (Sounds great to me!)

We haven't paid for cable in over decade. (And we've got kids, too!) We do have streaming Netflix but no antenna. It's more than enough and the kids get their cable fix when we travel.

How have you responded to market volatility?

I'm conducting research of how the stock market's volatility has impacted the asset mix of household investment portfolios over the past two years. The link below will take you to a brief survey. Once you have completed the survey, you will see a graphic of the average investor allocation at 3/31/2010.
    https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/investments1

Thanks to the 400+ respondents that have completed the survey so far. Some interesting tidbits...

    1. A plurality of respondents report having an above average willingness to take investment risk.

    2. Less than half of respondents were net purchasers of equity over the past year.

Please note: none of the questions ask for identifying information (e.g., name, social security #s, bank/brokerage accounts #s)

  • Yogurt: Should You Try Making Your Own?   16 years 7 weeks ago

I just heat the milk, standing by until the moment it begins to boil. Let it cool but not below 90. Add a few tbsps existing yogurt. Set on heating pad on medium heat, cover with dish towel. Check back in 7 hours: Yogurt. Tastes great.
