  • Two Dozen Uses For Toothpaste (Aside From Cleaning Your Teeth)   17 years 48 weeks ago

Since toothpaste can be used on a standard iron to de-gunk it, I'm curious to see if it will work on my flat iron? I use a lot of product in my hair, and the gunk is almost like concrete and nearly impossible to get off (short of a box-cutter, but I'm worried about damaging the heating plates).

I'm really excited to try this.

    thought of one other snack:

spread some cream cheese on slice of salami, roll it up and enjoy.

so bad for you, yet so worth it.

  • Grocery Shopping for the Cheap and Lazy   17 years 48 weeks ago

I became a vegetarian in January and that has made my boyfriend and I change a lot about our diet, including adding more soup. Now we tend to make a big soup once a week on the weekend so on days when we don't have the energy to put together a meal, we have something ready made and are less likely to order out. Plus! It's a great easy meal to take to work if we need to.

  • Why Is "Rich" Often Equated With "Evil"?   17 years 48 weeks ago

While there is some class resentment in this country, for the most part the opposite is true. People with money are presented as virtuous, without regard for how they earned their money (most really rich people inherit much of their money, for instance). People without money are presented as lacking various positive character traits (and that must be why they don't have money) again without regard for their personal circumstances.

There is, though, a kind of idealized middle class presented by Hollywood, usually with perfect houses and furniture that could only be afforded by much wealthier people. And these folks are presented as "very good" in contrast to certain evil super rich people who they must battle with (and who they always defeat). But that's Hollywood.

After all, Wise Bread bloggers are diverse, so I assume our readership will be as well. However, I am making the broad assumption that someone who is of non-white descent would have had some exposure to 'ethnic'-style shopping. This might be a mistake, because it's entirely possible that you can grow up as an Asian-American in this country and never set food inside an Asian grocery store.

However, I'm using the term 'white-ass' (and that's a scientific term, btw) to refer to a sense of North American superiority that I've observed among people that I know. I know people who wouldn't set foot inside a Korean grocery store, because they assume that the foods available inside will be to strange or foreign to them. That kind of attitude can exist among people who aren't white, of course, but I consider it largely an upper middle class attitude prevalent among white people (then again, I do know a Korean guy who won't go to an Asian store unless I drag him there for mochi or something).

I apologize if I've given the impression that I consider all my readers white, because I'm well aware that that's not the case. I just thought 'white-ass' was funnier and pithier than 'Get over your American-centric mode of consumption'.

  • Seven Tips for the Newly Unemployed   17 years 48 weeks ago

One of the most important aspects that people tend to neglect is preparation. Having an emergency fund while your working is critical to your success while unemployed. Your stress levels are much lower and you have a cushion to work with. All of the points in the post are definitely true but being prepared can mean the difference between settling and succeeding.

  • 10 Tasty Ideas for Leftover Turkey   17 years 48 weeks ago

Use leftover stuff to make the crust, if you have any, or buy a package of stuffing mix. Add chopped turkey, cheese, eggs and milk. My family likes this all year round!

  • 5 Ways to Cut Your Grocery Bill   17 years 48 weeks ago

I forget what blog I found this on, but it has changed my wife and my lives. We don't just make a list, we plan out our meals for four days out, so that we never buy anything that's going to rot because we don't eat it. We do buy a few snack items, but they're fruit leathers or cereal that we like to eat dry. In other words, things that won't go bad if we don't snack as often as we think we will.

We've shaved off about $50 a week from our grocery bill by planning our meals instead of restocking the fridge.

  • Do You Have Your TV Converter Box Yet?   17 years 48 weeks ago

I got a converter box yesterday, and, while the picture quality is great, some of the stations now come in a "letterbox" format or even a "framed" format. How can I get the picture to come in at full screen again? Or is this how it will always be? It's like my 27" TV suddenly became a 23" TV.

  • How Do You Deal With Family Members Who Are Bad At Managing Money?   17 years 48 weeks ago

It's difficult to confront a parent with an accusation of bad money management. My father was always bad with money, but my family had an avoidance policy - avoid the issue, and maybe it will go away. Well, you can guess how well that worked!

My father died unexpectedly several years back, and my mother was left with a large mortgage and little savings. Fortunately, the debt he had was in his name, not hers, so she wasn't as liable as she could have been, but she still had to sell the house and downsize. Now she's 67 years old and still working.

I sometimes wish that I had had the courage to talk to my father about his finances, but I still believe that he wouldn't have listened. Sometimes you have to step back and let people make their own choices. All you can do is love them.

    which reminds me of:

Ham: Hey, Smalls, you wanna s'more?
    Smalls: Some more of what?
Ham: No, do you wanna s'more?
Smalls: I haven't had anything yet, so how can I have some more of nothing?
    Ham: You're killing me Smalls!

    name that movie! =]

  • Too many online accounts? You need an aggregator.   17 years 48 weeks ago

I'm more interested in pulling together the sites I frequent than letting people know everything about me online. So far iGoogle has been working pretty well to compile everything in one place.

I believe that the warehouse stores have this written into their membership agreements. You don't have to submit to this treatment in other stores, but I wouldn't be so fast to assume that you don't at BJs, Costco, Sam's, etc. Check the agreement first.

  • Grocery Shopping for the Cheap and Lazy   17 years 48 weeks ago

I have a large Oriental Market I frequent that has an entire aisle of Ramen style noodles from the cheap 6 bags for 99 cents to much more pricey ones from Japan at $1.39-$1.69 a bag.

Its truly amazing all the flavors and kinds available...I've had noodles from Korea, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Phillipines...the list goes on.

Every one of them is quick to make up in the Nuclear Oven (Microwave..}:~D).

In my experience any Ramen style noodle that costs at least 39 cents or more per package is excellent.

If you want to look at a good website that will help you decipher all the language on the bags go to www.ramenramenramen.net

    #11

Just wanted to mention- for some of us reading this blog "ethnic" food is normal, everyday food! Also, not everyone who reads this blog is white ("Get over your white-ass self"). While I don't expect Wisebread bloggers to acknowledge each and every ethnic group, it's not unreasonable to expect that it is not assumed that all readers are Caucasian.
Perhaps to avoid being construed as ignoring that fact, you might say instead that trying foods from outside of your own culture can lead to some great bargains.

  • Grocery Shopping for the Cheap and Lazy   17 years 48 weeks ago

The messages I am taking form this are

    1. Do it my way: cook the food I want, and get it the way I want it - fast with not too much planning or fuss.

    2. Take advantage of being single and therefore able to do it my way! One of the biggest pleasures of being single is eating what you want when you want and how you want!

    Great post, thanks!

You say "peanut butter and jelly is nutritious" - are you sure about that? Plenty of fat and sugar there. I would have thought that a salad sandwich, perhaps with a slice of cheese or ham, would be a far, far more nutritious alternative!

My drunk food of choice is tacos! But I don't take any shortcuts, and I do them right.

Sadly in my drunk food days I was not frugal so I always went with the crowds to either the chip shop- chips, cheese and curry sauce, the 24 hr Chinese- spare ribs and several pots of green tea, or the Uni Cafe- deep fried pizza and deep fried mars bar.
Of course the morning after we finished our recovery with a full Irish breakfast (at least we made that at home!)
I'm not really sure how my arteries survived 4 years of University.
