I also believe that being a wise on money is something we learn at home. Our initial learning is based on our daily routines that eventually brings out our personality. • Four Common Mistakes to Avoid in Running Your Small Business   16 years 4 weeks ago

@StLouisRealtor - Indeed! Sometimes people think that renting or leasing is the equivalent of throwing their money away, but rarely does the cost of renting/leasing equate to the cost of buying, after maintenance, taxes, etc are taken into account.

  • Tips to Prepare for a Health Emergency   16 years 4 weeks ago

Adding to Lynn's comment, I too did not notice what I wrote and certainly meant no disrespect. My brother has been an EMT and a police officer for over 15 years, my mother is a nurse. I am the last person that would intend a condescending remark towards anyone let alone someone in the medical care field.

I appreciate the change in wording and apologize for not seeing this comment sooner. Thanks for the reminder of how important these brave citizens are to us, especially when we need them.

  • Job-Search Scams that Target High Performers   16 years 4 weeks ago

I want to mention an amazing FREE resource that I wasn't aware of until a year ago when I was hired for my current position. I work at a job center in Wisconsin. We are a collection of government and non-profit organizations that help people get jobs and often help them receive training/education. The state runs a job search website (jobcenterofwisconsin.com) where employers post jobs similar to careerbuilder/monster etc except that it's free for the employer and the potential employee. Job Centers exist across the country but may be called other things depending on the state (Workforce Centers for example).

    The national site is http://www.careeronestop.org/

  • How to Avoid Getting Your Credit Card Canceled   16 years 4 weeks ago

If you DO want to cancel your credit card, make sure you do it the right way...

Before you throw your plastic through the paper shredder, follow these steps to ensure your financial security.

    * Before canceling, really ask yourself: do I have a good line of credit with this account? If so, it might be beneficial to your credit score to maintain that credit line. Instead, cancel another card not used as frequently.
    * Don’t announce your cancellation plans to your credit card company. They can easily jack up your monthly interest rates.
    * Completely pay off any balance on the account. As long as your credit cards are balance-free, the cancellation will have no impact on your credit score.
    * Even after paying the balance, be sure to pay off any extra interest associated with the account.
    * Be sure to ask your issuer to report to the credit bureaus that the account was “closed at customer’s request.”
    * Call the credit card company to get verbal affirmation that your account has been closed. Write down the name of the representative you speak to and keep this is your finals for future references.

  • Financial Freedom and Using Passion to Budget   16 years 4 weeks ago

A great foundation to any financial management plan is a credit score. Even if you are in debt, there are certainly ways that you can sweep your financial predicament off the floor. Most people perceive their credit score as some daunting, law firm controlled restriction. However, is is quite the opposite... you need a credit score to get a loan, to get that money necessary to pull you from your debts. The major credit bureaus (legally) provide people with a once-annual credit report. So don't be afraid and take control!

  • Get Out of Debt First, Then Focus on Saving   16 years 4 weeks ago

Emergency Cash: stash your excess piles of cash into a savings account with Schwab. Their “High Yield Investor Savings” account offers 2.00% interest rates. Even better? There’s no minimum and the account is insured by FDIC. You are also reimbursed for ATM fees.

  • Debit Or Credit? Which One Should You Choose At The Checkout?   16 years 4 weeks ago

Though they are becoming increasingly popular, debit cards offer limited customer protection services, so it is typically smarter to use debit cards for smaller purchases. Conversely, credit cards should be used for larger purchases just because you have the time window to pay off the purchase. If paid on time, credit cards can yield more benefits in the long run, but these rewards only come with responsible spending. If you’re the type of person who consistently forgets to pay the bills on time, a debit card might be a more viable and responsible option.

  • How a Solid Credit Score Saves You Money   16 years 4 weeks ago

Your credit is reported monthly by your credit card company. This means your credit score is constantly changing, depending on the timeliness of your payments. Just simply being aware of your credit score can instigate many positive changes for your personal finances (even down to a purchase to purchase basis). Most financial analysts suggest checking your credit frequently to maintain and hopefully improve your financial standing. Having the necessary understanding of your score by utilizing strategic planning processes, you will have limitless spending opportunities. That car you always wanted? It can be sitting in your garage tomorrow… The possibilities are limitless, but they all start with a solid credit score. Easy as that. No longer does this process have to be a tedious endeavor, but rather a tolerable and comprehensive mode of building your personal credit.

I am NOT their target market and do not appreciate the unsolicited card. To me, this is a very unprofessional and desperate company for new clients/customers. Run...

  • Kick that Cell Phone Contract: Save with a Prepaid Plan   16 years 4 weeks ago

Aside from the handset subsidy on postpaid, as the selection on prepaid continues to improve, prepaid will be the most logical choice for most people. One only needs to look at Europe to see that prepaid makes a lot more sense!

  • Book Review: Your Money—The Missing Manual   16 years 4 weeks ago

ING is just separate savings accounts, although you have the same user name and log-in for all. I have about 10 sub-accounts and I really couldn't do it any other way, mentally. I know not to EVER touch my emergency fund, vetting fund or down payment fund...but the rest are set up to pull from throughout the year or monthly, even. I don't have to track tallies of what I've spent against my budget -- I just need to see what's left in the account. I can't think of an easier way to keep my funds separate and give me peace of mind that what should be untouched remains untouched.

  • Conversation Killers: What’s Holding You Back From Negotiating?   16 years 4 weeks ago

Kentin, great post - I really enjoyed it. And, I agree that fear holds us back from doing more negotiating. My husband has a great line he uses at garage sales. He'll ask the price, and then say, "Will you take "$XX for it?" It works, a lot of the time. I still struggle with haggling, which I do mostly at farmer's markets. Being rebuffed makes me embarrassed, but I make myself keep trying, because like you said - you won't know until you try.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   16 years 4 weeks ago

This is completely ridiculous. Netspend sends their cards out, to solicit business. They are one of the best prepaid services around. I have been with them for 5 years, and know many people who use them to direct deposit their paychecks. The cards they send are not activated, nor can anyone use them since they are PREPAID and at the point your receive them THEY WON'T HAVE money on them. People who aren't educated or knowledgeable in certain areas, should not post things such as this. This can pursuade others who aren't aware of Netspend's benefits to not give them a chance. Yes, you have to pay for inquiries, but their fees are so low it shouldn't be that big of a deal. **I am a very happy Netspend customer **
