Be sure to get someone to drive who WON'T be tasting wines (or if tasting, uses the spittoon)

  • Wine Tastings: Finding Cheap Wine That You Like   16 years 43 weeks ago

I am always happy when someone posts about wine. Thanks for the great article, Porter!

If you love wine, like I do, you will want to taste a wide variety of wines at the beginning. Once you have found what types you prefer, you can focus and go deep. For me, it was Burgundy. Unfortunately, Burgundy is fraught with expensive disappointments. So to save money I read from wine writers whose palate agrees with mine. Clive Coates, and Allan Meadows.

Before I purchase an expensive bottle, I read from the larger wine community at cellartracker.com to see if any have opened one already and tasted it.

Yes, I almost included Pecuniarities and made it a "tough blog names to spell" edition of best of personal finance. Actually, Moolanomy isn't so bad as far as spelling - whenever I look at it, I have say it in my head over and over. I think it's supposed to be pronounced "moo-LAH-nuh-mee", like economy, yes? But for some reason, my brain wants to say "Moo-lay Money", and so I almost spell it that way every time.

Mind you, you are talking to someone who can never rememer if it's Wise Bread or Wisebread, so it's not like it takes much to confuse me.

Hi Andrea, thank you for including me in your round up. I thought Moolanomy was pretty easy when I registered it. If you're really looking for a hard name to remember, try this one: Pecuniarities.com :-)

Using an entire cup of bleach to bleach just to wash your sponges is excessive, expensive, and really bad for the environment. If you have a septic tank, it also kills all the "helpful" bacteria and you'll need to pump your tank a lot more often. If you're just washing the sponge, it's better (and cheaper ... and better for the environment) to just throw the thing into a pan boiling water and let it soak until the water cools. When you boil something not-too-messy like corn on the cob or a hard-boiled egg, instead of dumping out the water, fish out your dinner then throw your dish sponge in the pot (heat off), stick the lid back on, and just let it sit until the pot gets cool. It kills the bacteria, which is what causes that icky odor. Because you are reusing a resource (hot water) you would otherwise be throwing out, it doesn't cost you anything.

If you have one of those white fiberglass kitchen sinks, bleach-soaks can be justified under the moniker of "killing two birds with one stone." Only, if you're really smart, you'll kill 3 birds at once, not two. At night before you go to bed, fill your kitchen sink up with 5 gallons of really hot water and 1/2 cup of bleach. Soak your sponge, your dingy white socks, and your sink all at the same time overnight. The next morning everything will be sparkling white and clean. If your sink is stainless steel, you shouldn't be doing bleach soaks in it as it can harm the finish ... use a bucket of water instead and dump the bleach water in your gravel walkway afterwards to kill weeds (instead of your septic tank).

I would tend to agree with Elizabeth on this...most of the time it's something super cliché or cheesy like "To be challenged and happy" or something.

Let's be honest, if you're applying to be a salesperson, it's because you want to make that your job so you can make money and pay your bills. And because you think you'd be good at it.

Let's not go so far as to say that you want the job because it will "make you happy" or "challenge you."

  • How to Make Moonshine   16 years 43 weeks ago

You are correct. This is not the tell all of moonshine. Reading back, these are some alternatives to traditional moonshine. Something that you can do without a mentor. As with any art, you are trained and have some form of talent. This is the best most of us can do with what we have. I have tried several bootleggers shine, and I can tell you, many are making stuff that needs no skill or artistry. With what we share here, we hope that they will carry on, mature their skills and taste. Build better, learn more and ultimately, make some quality drinks. Some may make run, vodka, gin, whisky and yes, moonshine. Even an untrained, talented artist can produce a work of art. If you have some information, maybe you could share. One goal here is to keep the skill alive. So, grab a constructive, instructive pen, and share some knowledge.

  • Are the new home appraisal rules good for consumers?   16 years 43 weeks ago

I think the rule is silly. It seems they want to regulate the majority to straighten up a very small minority. We purchased in April 07 (in Pennsylvania). We attempted to refi this spring, and the deal died with the appraisal. We only wanted a lower rate, and why would I take a lower rate if we needed Mortgage insurance to get it?
Supposedly our house lost 25k in 2 years, in an area where the losses are not even hotting a 10% average. Did I mention we have 2200 square feet, and the closest comp was 1700, and they were not all sold comps? Yeah, so those houses were selling for an average of $145 per square foot, but mine is valued at $95? The appraiser left out a half bath, the new windows and other upgrades, which is hard to believe, because I gave him a copy of what was reported in 2007.
Our poor broker couldn't get a break and has apparently had 10-15 deals dies this same death.

  • How To Write A Resume: 12 Steps To Your Next Job   16 years 43 weeks ago

I just got laid off and am consulting with a career planning company (part of the severance package) they disagree with some of the above points. they suggest that references available upon request should not be written on the bottom of your resume. rather bring them with you on a seperate sheet of paper.
Summary of qualifications is also a good idea mirroring some of what they are looking for in their ad if you can truly say you are qualified. Some of this should also be included in your cover letter. They stress that there should be only 2 fonts that you can choose from. Times Roman and ariel narrow. alsways spell out numbers up to ten. then it is okay to use numerals. No more than 2 pages. short, sweet, and to the point. most people who review resumes, and have 100 or more to choose from, do not have time to read a book. things need to stand out as they scan it.

Synthetic sponges are yucky. I always buy the organic sponges that are sold in drug stores (usually they are for showering but they work just as well for cleaning dishes).

  • Are the new home appraisal rules good for consumers?   16 years 43 weeks ago

how much is the local governments tied into thisa? I own properties in va and nc that were reasessed within a few months of one another both are similar. Both counties used the same outside firm. this was before the bubble popped and neither would sell for much more than half the asessed tax value. both were raised tax value exact the same. How much doe's our local government's profit from over valuing property. these laws are passed to protect us from bad buisness practice. but who will protect us from bad government practice that is doing neer the same thing.

    club.

I bought a Suzuki Burgman 400. A motorcycle that is referred to as a "super scooter" solely because it is step through (motor under the seat not between your legs) and a simple automatic "twist and go" with the ability to go 100 mph...way too fast IMO.

Anyway I use it in place of my pickup that got 16 mpg...the bike gets 62.

I pretend that I am filling up the truck every time fill the bike. It would take 4 times the fuel so I mulitply the cost of filling up the bike by 3 to get what I'm saving on filling up the truck...that money goes into a special savings account...one day it will be used to replace the bike when it wears out.

I would avoid using tinted, marbled, or heavily textured paper. When copied the tint or texture can interfere with the text or it seem like the original was dirty. A nice bright cotton rag can say a lot.

I just bought the Shark Pocket Mop and can't wait to try it. Actually, I can wait because I don't really want to mop the floor, but I can't wait to find out if it works as well as it claims.

  • Do You Barter? -- Tell Us and Enter to win $10!   16 years 43 weeks ago

I regularly trade web hosting, design, and development for goods and services. My minimum charge is a case of beer, full meal, or full service (oil changes, hair cuts, pet sitting, free hardware) per hour. About half of my consulting income is by trade, which usually pays better than cash ... nor because of taxes (I claim all my invoices), but because we usually trade at coast.

This week's work will yield a few sushi dinners, a week of professional pet sitting, and a new iPhone.

  • Spend or Save: The Fashion Edition   16 years 43 weeks ago

I don't have work clothes, being a freelancer, so I spend on my everyday clothes, but it's the same principle. Tops I generally get cheaply, but knits are a new 'spend' category – after years of throwing cheap ones away after a year or spending ridiculous amounts of time depilling them, I've finally seen the light. Having said that, I try to buy everything on sale if I can.

For the occasional wedding or special event, I've been looking into hiring designer dresses. So much cheaper, and you get to wear something really nice.

  • Can't Afford a Home Alarm System? You Probably Already Have One   16 years 43 weeks ago

If I heard someone in the house, I think turning on the car alarm as a diversion tactic while you call 911 would be much more effective than doing nothing. Great idea if you already have a car alarm. Nobody is saying, go out and buy a new car to double as an alarm system for your home. It's just, "If you've already got a remote with a panic button on it, why not use it if you have to?"

It's better than going out to buy a dog specifically to use as a guard dog when you really didn't care to have a pet in the first place. They do need care and love too you know.

  • Save Some Cash With These 6 Clever Cleaning Hacks   16 years 43 weeks ago

I recently found out that fabreeze is just vinager(under a different name) and perfume. My mom and I stumbleed apon this one. i washed a load of clothes that smelled badly with a cup of fabreeze. later my mom ran a load but she added vinager. and geuss what, then turned out smelling the same. we did some resuch about fabreeze and it turned out our hunch was right. so instead of useing fabreeze, put 1 part vinager with three parts water in a speay bottle, use like abreeze, then go over the same spot with your favorite scent.

  • Can't Afford a Home Alarm System? You Probably Already Have One   16 years 43 weeks ago

I agree with post #19. Ask any cop - most burglars will strike when they believe the residence is unoccupied. It's not the times we're home that I worry about. In the rare case that a trespasser enters while aware that you're home, you really don't want to stick around. The odds are pretty slim, but people who break in while you're home are typically very dangerous individuals. The horn might offer a welcome diversion, but in this case, I'm with post #8, substituting "Sig Sauer" with "Glock." (I love living in New Hampshire) Post #2 had the right idea, too. To each his own. If you find ownership of certain hardware intimidating or morally objectionable, or perhaps you're restricted by the local politicians who clearly know best, think through a plan to hide or escape, just as you would think of a plan to escape a fire. Either way, dial 911 immediately when in doubt. Better to look embarrassed than get hurt.
