For me and many others in the U.S., Black Friday is Buy Nothing Day. It's nice to avoid the mad consumerism of our society and opt for a nice walk without buying anything at all.
Today, my husband and I did some Freecycling, a much wiser way to mangage our bread... not spending any at all.
i make cheap dry pink beans over the stove ( after soaking the night before and rinsing in the morning) i slow cook over a gas stove in big pot till done then at dinner time i satee onions nad peppers nad add the beans, sauce and a square or two of some dark dark choclate.. if you put in a low fat tortilla with fat free cheddar it is very good and healty! the mixture is also very servable with plain rice and freezable( if you mix the beans and rice together it makes a good base for a quickie 7 layer burrito with leftover quac, sourcream and cheese and lettuce and tomato!)
i also like to use marina sauce as a base for ministrone or vegetable soup in the crock pot( other great use for beans).
I love to see recipies and ideas like these..good job keep more coming (especially since i buy those huge jars of costo sauce to)
i take the dark meat turkey and shredd and put in pot with bbq sauce or sloppy joe sauce and serve on buns with cheese...pretty darn awesome! even my pickest daugter dives into it!
we use the white meat thats left for either turkey salad sandwhiches with mayo or just hot turkey and swiss sandwiches(baked or broiled of course)
** i thought of a turkey shepards pie but not sure how that would taste!
I love a good deal too, but you won't find me getting up that early and rushing into the stores. This morning I slept in (well, as much as you can sleep in when you have kids), really thought about what my family would appreciate for Christmas, and hit one store around 9:30. I finished up my shopping online, buying nothing at full price.
Then I spent the afternoon with my family putting up the Christmas tree. It was a nice, low key day. You'll never get me to give that up in favor of standing in long lines and pushing through crowds at 4 am. No deal is worth that!
If you are are truly interested in becoming mortgage free check this out !! It works no matter what type of mortgage you currently have. And is avaiable at Amazon books as well as www.SuperchargeYourMortgage.com
Obviously I can't change it now due to linking protocol, but would love to know what you think I should have called it. As a writer, I struggle most with the headline, it can kill an article or make it strong.
I think your calculations for 6% return are off. You claim that 6% will double in 6 years (actually 12 years). You also state, correctly, that 8% will double in 9 years. How does the lower return of 6% double in less time than the 8% investment?
Great article, but I wish you had titled it differently. Your explanation for the title notwithstanding, I think it is still going to prevent many from reading the article who may have learned the most from it.
Why wait? Getting one now picks up many revisions that address design issues and adds HDMI to boot!
The xbox 360 is hands-down the winner in next-gen HD gaming, regardless of the well-known overheating problems that are now mostly resolved.
Like many others, I've had one Xbox 360 die and my replacement has been working fine for months, and while that experience was a bit frustrating the Xbox 360s could be catching fire and exploding and would still sell like hot-cakes with awesome games like Bioshock, Halo 3, COD 4 and others out there!
Everybody knows they are loud as a jet airplane and will probably rrod eventually but it's still the best console on the planet.
We use the leftover mashed potatoes, add chopped turkey, stuffing and a raw egg and form patties, which we then pan fry and top with gravy. We call them Thanksgiving pancakes -- you have all the flavors of Thanksgiving in each bite! I like to think these would be perfect for astronauts.
I tried it with a Rayovac 6 Volt. There were 4 D-diameter batteries whose length were the height of the whole 6 Volt casing. So presumably, they were 1.5 V each.
I read about this a few weeks ago and think it is a great idea. The 'free' laptop is a perfect gift for a little kid. I think the specs are more than sufficient for their use, and it comes with a lesson about giving and helping other too :)
You left out the turkey soup. That is my favorite part of the whole turkey. I always go to my mother-in-law's for T-day but buy a turkey anyway, partly because it's 49 cents a pound and partly for the soup. Put the carcass in a pot of water to cover, add whatever you want (onions, carrots) plus plenty of salt and pepper, boil the crap out of it for 4-6 hours (skim off the foam) and strain. Throw out everything that you boiled in there and add some more turkey (not boiled) and some noodles (or rice). Cook til the noodles are done and you have my favorite meal of all time. Or just use the broth in all the recipes you mentioned above.
Good recipes. Let me add a couple of my favorites:
Turkey, avocado and bacon sandwiches are luxurious treats.
Turkey tortilla soup--Turkey, 1 package chicken broth, 1/2 to 1 can Ro-Tel tomatoes (tomatoes with green chiles), whole kernel corn, pinch oregano, salt; if you like hominy, add a can--it adds a lot. Serve over tortilla chips with cilantro on top if you like it.
In response to the question about generic Dawn alternatives, the answer, in my opinion, in no. I've tried cheap brands and even the newer Dawn antibacterial, Dawn with bleach, etc. They just don't cut it. I notice that I use less of the real (orriginal) dawn. Don't be fooled by the similarities in packaging either. There may be a generic brand out there that works just as well but I wouldn't want to risk paying for watered down Dawn.
I think Palmolive may be almost as good but not for things like fleas.
Dawn works great for getting rid of fleas! I've been using it for years (I had a cat that died from using the chemical flea products so people should be careful). You just need to be careful not to use too much of it as it will strip oils from the animal's coat. Instead, I put a few drops in a bowl of warm water, dip a flea/lice comb into the soapy water and comb through the fur. Dip the comb back into the soapy solution and watch the fleas die instanly. You could also bathe the animal in a weak solution of dawn and water although it might still strip the coat.
For gunk build-up down the sink, try pouring half a cup of baking soda down, then a half a cup of plain white vinegar. The foaming action cleans the gunk right out. Rinse down for a few minutes with hot tap water.
I doubt I'll ever pay for a movie again. My libraries are great and have tons of DVDs and VHS tapes (I still use my old VHS player and have managed at garage sales and thrift stores to buy VHS tapes for as low as 50 cents). I figure any movie I haven't seen already is "new" anyway, and I never mind watching an old favorite comedy. Most times I'll see previews of a movie I might want to view and will reserve it if I can ahead of time and have had pretty good luck that way.
Another idea is if you really admire a certain actor's work (or director or whatever) to check out a list of everything they've done and track the movies down, have a kind of film festival at your house, make it a Christian Bale or Al Pacino night, ha-ha. Cheap entertainment. The IMdB site is good for checking out lists like that.

We're primates. We'll always be about status seeking. It helps a lot to realize that, as it puts many wants and "needs" into perspective.

They are all good ideas Sarah, but I LOVE that one. Timely post.

I buy houses from people loosing out to foreclosure.
I've seen victims of mortgage fraud having paid too much for their house because they were nieve.
I've seen people spend their money on stupid stuff, rather than making their house payments.
I've seen people treat their house like a landfill (their personal dump).
I've seen people get in over their heads because of credit blemishes and loan brokers who push the edges of truth.
Yet, I've seen people who were just plain irresponsible. There was no mitigating crisis like divorce or bankruptcy. Just irresponsibility.
If you can handle your money well, handling a mortgage should be OK. If you can't handle your own money, then don't borrow money.
Just my .02

The human race is a gullible race. 70% of everyone believes in ghosts! Now, there's a topic!
