  • Remove Car Dents Quickly and Cheaply   18 years 28 weeks ago

I was wondering if the process of hair dryer/co2 dent removal would work on large dent about the size of a basketball?
How long do you heat the dent with the blower before spraying the liquid co2?

Despite what some skeptics are posting, your concept is rock solid.

Putting 30% in stocks as Jon states is not an option in most cases. Someone who is 65 years old today is not that far removed from the last depression which means that he/she would rather stick their money under a mattress (or stick needles in their eyes) than experience the risk of losing a dime in the markets.

As far as your return estimate, I still say it's bang on. First of all, money market funds are not guaranteed as one skeptic claimed. A vast majority of Americans/Canadians get zilch on their bank accounts much less the 4+ you were stating or the 5% or 6% that is avaialable at some obscure financial institution run by Guido out of his basement.

Lest we forget that as the Fed drops interest rates like Britney Spears drops babies, returns on short term savings will continue to deminish.

Keep up the great work Nora. I enjoy all your articles.

One other idea... my mother dressed me up like this when I was a child, but still a good idea, is a bag of jelly beans.
Buy a clear garbage bag and cut out hole at the bottom for your legs. Once you can get your legs through the garbage bag, line up where you would put in hole for your arms. Once you have the bag on, fill it with a variety of colored balloons. Seal the top of the bag by tieing a ribbon around your neck to close the bag.

  • Horizon Organic Milk: Is it All Just Lies?   18 years 28 weeks ago

Can you site your sources??? I would love to read those articles, because I am researching the whole subject of organic foods(Ihave 3 small children). I would love to know if there is really a difference because we don't have any money to waste, however I do not want to compromise their health either. All the things I have read so far lead me to the conclusion that it does not hurt to go organic, but it is not a significant difference.

  • Organizers for a Dollar   18 years 28 weeks ago

Just a note that the shipping per item is $8. Now that would still make some of the items a good deal, just not as great as I had hoped.

  • Canadians are Getting Fleeced by Their Own Dollar   18 years 28 weeks ago

Just today I went into Future Shop, they dropped most of their items down to U.S. prices, or at least as close as they dare to. The iPod I ended up buying was $249 USD on the Apple website, and ended up being $259 CAD instead of the $279 CAD it was last week.

Sure, the $10 is fleecing me... but I chalk that up to the cost of shipping if I were to buy it online.

  • Organizers for a Dollar   18 years 28 weeks ago

    ... it's just a damn shame they won't ship to Canada :(

I just got an iPod too...

  • Why there's no reason NOT to buy store brand baby formula.   18 years 28 weeks ago

I just love those who find the need to argue breast vs. bottle. This article was aimed at those who choose bottle for whatever reason. It was not saying skip the breast and go for generic. I think the majority of moms do what is best for them and their child. It just angers me that people have to comment that formula is crap. It may not be 100% as great as the breast but far from crap. I nursed my son for two months ans then went to formula. We did name brand for about a month and then found sam's members' mark at $19.43 for 52 oz. CHEAP!!!! My pediatrician had no problem with the generic brand switch. I once read somewhere that pedi. don't recommend generic because it is so cheap and that might deter some from trying to nurse. Great article. I hope this helps those that have chose to give formula the guts to buy generic. Send a message to the pricey brands!!!

  • Canadians are Getting Fleeced by Their Own Dollar   18 years 28 weeks ago

I buy all my books from amazon.COM, not .CA.. live near the border so I just get them shipped to a US address.. you should see price disparities start to be addressed as we move through the rest of this year. It takes time for inventories to be moved through (which were bought at higher prices by Canadian firms), but we will benefit sooner than later ;-)

  • How to Become an Expert   18 years 28 weeks ago

    Philip,

The distinction you make is important.

I am a keen amateur magician. My "practice" sessions can amount to messing with a deck of cards. At the end I've learnt little but have enjoyed myself.

When I practice deliberately I achieve something - I find some tiny difference of action or a new handling.

Doing something unthinkingly but often will not produce mastery. Spending time on critical evaluation and with real focus on improvement dramatically improves your chances.

  • Legendary rock band Radiohead charges "whatever you want" for latest album   18 years 28 weeks ago

bands that really care about their music are willing to give it up for free. you have to give it away for free before you are signed to a label, to get the word out. just the other day on campus, a local artist promoting his music stopped and gave me a full length CD for free. the only "artists" complaining about illegal downloads are self centered, money mongering d*cks. they are the ones who either started it just for money, or sold out; they are the not artists but do what a company tells them to so that both the record label and "artist" can watch the money roll in. a record label is just like any other company, they want to appeal to the masses, and rake in as much dough as possible.

  • The Millionaire Next Door: Riches De-mystified   18 years 28 weeks ago

Years ago I worked in a nursing home as a volunteer coordinator. While there, I became acquainted with a woman who helped clean the rooms (148). We would often get into discussions during our breaks about financial things. She came across to others as slow and uninteresting. To me she was the opposite. She told me that when she was 7 years old, her pastor had given her good advice...save 10%, give away 10% and live on the rest. She informed me that is what she had done ever since.
Remember, all her life the only 'career' she had was cleaning, either houses or room for others. Today she is in her late 80's, in a nursing home as private pay and way beyond a millionaire! Now I'm laughing at those who laughed at her!

I also have a friend who inherited quite a lot of money many years ago. But she asked that I not tell anyone because she felt people treat you differently if they know you have money. An interesting observation.

You're one of my favorite Wise Bread authors. You always write what I seek to improve my life. I find that your articles are concise, clean, inspiring and encouraging. Keep it up!

  • How to Become an Expert   18 years 28 weeks ago

Great reminder. I find it far too easy to read (and sometimes write) about the things I'd like to be doing, rather than actually doing them.

  • Hairy, Scary, and Larry--5 Halloween costumes you can make from stuff you probably already own   18 years 28 weeks ago

My most memorable costume yet: I was a picnic!

Wear all black for a neutral background, or all green, for grass. Make a skirt by folding a paper tablecloth lengthwise, then pleating until it's long enough to wrap around your waist. Staple the pleats, but don't put it on yet. Then, staple small paper plates and napkins onto the skirt. Use curling ribbon to tie together plastic silverware (or use compostable flatware, like that available here). Staple the ribbon to the tablecloth. You can also use the ribbon+staple combination to attach plastic wineglasses (the reusable kind, of course). Once you have everything attached to the table cloth, wrap it around your waist and staple the ends.

Who says you have to be a person? Why not be a thing!

  • Google Offers Free 411 - No Ads!   18 years 28 weeks ago

One tip is instead of asking for the name of the restaurant, just ask for the type of restaurant such as Chinese restaurant. It'll give you a list to choose from. That way you don't have to deal with mispronouncing the name. You can also give the zip code if you know it (which I rarely do).

There's a good video I saw about this too - a Google employee is ordering a pizza and there's a contest if you can guess which of the employees is the voice on the service.

  • It can be done; how to fold the perfect fitted sheet.   18 years 28 weeks ago

Good video. I got this tip from Martha Stewart many years ago. Although I'm sure she still does it neater than I do, it works well enough. I however will never be one of those maniacs who irons sheets.

  • Finding joy in temporary frugality   18 years 28 weeks ago

I grew up in a household in the 80's with no cable TV, no VCR, no microwave, no dishwasher. As a family of five, we had one vehicle which only had AM radio and no air conditioning. It was always a big deal when my parents let us eat out at McDonalds. I'm sure some of our habits were a lifestyle choice, but more likely a financial necessity for my parents. Years later in my first job out of college, which didn't pay well, I pointed out to a colleague that I wasn't used to having a lot, so I didn't miss so much not having it now. A lot of the lifestyle habits of frugality are still deeply engrained, but for me I find it liberating to eat out at a fast food restaurant without guilt. I find joy in having the option of choosing what areas I can be frugal in while still having money set aside for the areas where I want to splurge.

    21. Are you willing to put the interests of X Company ahead of your own?

  • 10 Kicky Drinks Without the Caffeine   18 years 28 weeks ago

Okay, I'm in my second pregnancy (only 4 weeks to go woohoo!) and it was time to cut out the caffeine again... I did it completely in my first pregnancy but got back in the habit of my morning cup'o'goodness.. and let me tell you, having a 15-month-old to chase while being 8 months pregnant with NO caffeine is just not cool.
So thanks for the encouragement. The decaf coffee has been a go-to but it's just not tasting great and sometimes I want something awesome and refreshing midday when it's still way too hot for coffee (according to me, anyway). I LOVE Italian sodas but don't get them much because they are so expensive! What a novel idea- make them at home. I can't tell you how excited I am. :) Yay I can make it through the last month of pregnancy now. :)
