Are you sure he can actually write?

But Yes on Greenspan. He actually understands economics.

  • Should George W. Bush write for Wisebread?   18 years 31 weeks ago
    Yep

You're right. The way I put those two together is confusing the issue. Our national debt hasn't been helped by GWB but it's not like it was at zero when Clinton was in office. However, he sure did spend that budget surplus pretty darned quickly.

  • Simple Ways to Give Dirty Shoes the Boot   18 years 31 weeks ago

after you have washed your shoes - shove baking potatoes into them while they dry. this is also a good way to enlarge one or both shoes, i have one foot that i a smidgen larger than the other, so i soak my new shoe and shove a potato into it to widen it.

  • Should George W. Bush write for Wisebread?   18 years 31 weeks ago

Hey there, just wanted to point out that the National Debt is different from the US government's budget--the budget, during the Clinton years had a surplus. In other words, they had more money in government than they knew what to do with. The National Debt is the amount of money the US has borrowed to fuel its economy. Any cash you might have in your pocket technically has to be paid back to the Federal Reserve (including any money in your bank account). That's where the frighteningly huge number (approaching $9 trillion as I type this!) comes from. Yes, our economy, as I understand it, is based entirely on credit (debt).

In fact, just recently, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson asked Congress to vote to raise the borrowing cap because the USG will run out of operating funds on October 1, 2007. Yipes!

BUT THANK GEORGE WE'RE SAFE FROM AL QAEDA!

    Not.

"Many people will argue that none of this is Mr. Bush's fault." - I am not sure about "many". How about "a few"?

  • Laws the Leg-Breakers Don’t Want You to Know About   18 years 31 weeks ago

Hey, I also wanted to point out that in every state of the union (I believe) there is a statute of limitations on debt. SuzeOrman.com lists the lengths for each state at her website here: http://urltea.com/1jxa

Basically, this means that if the collection agency or credit card company doesn't sue you within the amount of time for the state you're in they can't legally sue you. In other words, say you lose your job and can't afford to pay your monthly payment. The moment that they cash that last check is when the statute of limitations begins. In my state, California, it's four years. I paid nothing to anyone and incurred no new debt since the late 1990s. In 2005 I got served but didn't know what I was doing. Don't do what I did and fail to file an opposition once papers have been served.

I was ignorant and trusting that the justice system would adhere to the "innocent until proven guilty" principle, which it didn't. When someone sues you, you MUST reply in a court of law or else the judge in the case will assume that the claim is true and rule against you. It's ridiculous but it's true--it happened to me. Of course, once they rule against you, I'm not sure how they can force the money out of you. It's been nearly a year and I've heard nothing past the initial "here's what you owe us, chump" letter from the law firm that sued me. I don't have that kind of money laying around so I didn't reply. Plus my lawyer was still planning an appeal.

So, the moral of the story is, file an opposition as soon as they go for a "request for summary judgement". I don't know how to file one, but I'm sure Google can help you learn. In the opposition you just say that you have no record of the debt and need to see proof. If they provide proof, check the date of the last collected dollar from you--if it's further back than your state's statute of limitations allows, then you call them on it. Supposedly, collection agencies can't even prove that the debt is yours in most cases.

Of course, the ultimate solution is to simply not ever answer the door. If I hadn't that one fateful day back in 2005, I'd never had to go through any of it. :(

I've also heard that when you get a letter from a collection agency for a debt, ask them to provide proof ASAP. Do this in writing. I've read that this scares them off and they'll leave you alone because most collection agencies can't provide the actual contract you signed when you applied for the credit card.

Now, all of that is according to MY EXPERIENCE. I COULD BE WRONG. I'm no expert in anything but my own experience (and even then...). So, do your own research! I do hope my experiences help people. :)

  • Should George W. Bush write for Wisebread?   18 years 31 weeks ago

That theorized that Bush speaks very clearly and concisely when he is talking about something that he believes in, but stutters when he is lying or being insincere. As someone who is obsessed with linguistics, this idea fascinated me.

I got in a recent argument at a family dinner about fiscal responsibility. It was my nuclear family, the liberals, against some in-laws, the conservatives, and me, somewhere in between, saying "Trickle down is a NICE idea, but... well, welfare doesn't always work the way it should... then again, the rich could afford to give more...." I'm torn, but I do know this: our President didn't have a Texan accent when he was running for governor.

  • Dollar-Cost Averaging: my path to becoming a not-so-nervous investor   18 years 32 weeks ago

Thanks to Decision Strategist and Tony for contributing to the DCA conversation. When I started researching DCA to add to my thoughts, I was surprised to see so many negative perspectives on DCA. I didn't really think of it as a comprehensive strategy but as a way of seeing that market volatility is not always such a bad thing or at least a way of taking the edge (risk) off of investing.

  • The cost of a free ride - why not to use a buyer's agent   18 years 32 weeks ago

Wow, that's not even close to a valuable critique of this article. I'm amazed at your reasoning - the bad guys usually get caught? Yeah. Sure they do. There's just so much justice in this world.

  • Dollar-Cost Averaging: my path to becoming a not-so-nervous investor   18 years 32 weeks ago

A few thing of note. First, one of the beauties of DCA is that you buy more shares when prices are low and fewer when prices are high. So you get a little extra "leverage" that way.

I wouldn't be so quick to write off DCA in lump sum situations. Depending on the volatility of the investment it could make really good sense. First, take the money and put it into a money market fund, or something similar.

Then, if you wish to invest in individual stocks, or even market index funds. If you were to invest all the money at once, what are the chances that the market will immediately go up and never come back down to that level again? Probably small. If it does you will be happy that you invested at least some of your money.

On the other hand, if the market goes down, you would be happy that you didn't. DCA is really just a nice way to reduce volatility. It doesn't maximize returns. In the most likely event of prices fluctuating around some point, you end up with more shares because you bought more in the lows.

It's easy to point to periods when you would have wanted to be all in and just as easy to point to periods when you would wish that you weren't.

  • Dollar-Cost Averaging: my path to becoming a not-so-nervous investor   18 years 32 weeks ago

Dollar-cost-averaging has been shown to yield results that are no different from randomly investing. Check out this link for example.

It's all the current rage, and I suppose the strength is that you are investing regularly, but it doesn't really matter when and how much as long as you do it.

  • Simple Ways to Give Dirty Shoes the Boot   18 years 32 weeks ago

I just would never have the balls to wash month old shoes. I use conventional shoe methods during the "useful" life of the shoe (approx. 6 months to 1 year), then consider washing the shoes. Basically, I don't do it until the decision is wash them in the washer, or buy new shoes.

And for sanity's sake, a top loading washer is better than a front-loader for this, to avoid the rhythmic banging as they roll around.

  • The cost of a free ride - why not to use a buyer's agent   18 years 32 weeks ago

gotta love consumers who slick themselves into a worse market...
"you get what you pay for." but you also make it worse for everyone else, ie: cheapen the real estate profession, drive down the housing market, etc...
if the buyers have all cash, then hey, money talks, otherwise your slick offer scheming is gonna be just that, and have a low percentage of success.
you'd need to be quite experienced in scheming, which would make a person seem just as shady as the agent you assume to be so shady... the RE laws for agents are too strict to carry shady agents around for too long. they inevitably get busted.

please think before making agents sound like they are crooked. and then devising schemes against them because of some "story" or over one incident.

    buyer beware of stupid stories....

  • Revenge of the battery hack - 32 AAs inside a 6v Lantern Battery. BUT IS IT PHONEY?!   18 years 32 weeks ago

    I call shenanigans.
    (1) For 32 AA to add to 6V you need 8 parallel groups of 4 AA in serial. Where are all the wires for that.
    (2) It appears that the batteries that come out have glue residue on them, like from a label. Most clearly seen on the battery to the lower right.

Seems like someone gutted a lantern battery and put 32 AA's from which he removed the label.

  • Remove Car Dents Quickly and Cheaply   18 years 32 weeks ago

Method #2 works for me. I had a VERY noticeable ding (3 quarters a inch) on front driver door near the edge of the door. After few tries with hairdryer and 3-5 seconds Memorex AirDuster, the ding is now merely noticeable. I would say it is back to 98% of the original.

  • Carry some cash   18 years 32 weeks ago

I try to keep the stuff in my pocket down to a minimum. Plus I hate carrying cash when I can honestly tell someone, dude I got no money to give you! To some angry vagrant who starts getting in my face. Honest!

Happened to me in Tucson when I was going to school there; I told the guy I didn't have any money, I had 5 bucks but I was going to use that for a sub & chips at subway. He got in my face and demanded the money, I turned away from him and he tried to hit me with his cane! Barely saw it in time to knock it aside and then I shoved him to the ground and quickly walked away. With my luck I expected the cops to go on his side, lol.

Must of needed his fix; I lived in the very poor 'down' side of Tucson during college. Cheap rent interesting surroundings!

My debit card will take care of anything if not my credit card; if they don't take either then well I don't really need it.

To answer your question, the one that is used with metacafe is from Walgreens (it was noted by a previous post as well). In fact, here is a website http://www.dealcatcher.com/index.asp?v=8&m=1171&c=97093&o=1
to check it out. I haven't yet tried it, just discovered it tonight, but I plan to buy one of these and find out for myself. I'm not a tech geek, just a Mom with lots of toys to powerup.
