  • 6 Secret Homemade Stain Removers That Kick Butt   18 years 33 weeks ago

Along a similar vein, while not actually a stain, if a pet urinates on carpet, you can get rid of the smell (as long as it is not a chronic occurrence) by cleaning the carpet with vinegar. This also discourages pets from returning to use the same spot again.

*NEVER use AMMONIA on a pet-urine-on-carpet-accident, as this will make the smell stronger, and ENCOURAGE the pet to return to that spot again.

We once had a dog that busted her stitches after a surgery, and she got blood all over a light blue carpet. We were able to get the blood stains completely out. If blood stains get on washable fabric or carpet, just pour some hydrogen peroxide on it the stain, and watch the stain bubble right out (you may need to scrub with a brush or white towel) - for fabrics, you will need to wash through with clean water; for carpet, you will need to blot with a clean white towel, dampened with clean water. Try not to saturate the carpet too much, of course, because you don't want it to stay wet too long or it will mildrew. After the stain is gone, just blot with a dry white towel.

    * NEVER use VINEGAR on a blood stain - vinegar will make the stain become permanent.

  • How to Launder Money   18 years 33 weeks ago

By the way, there are a number of professions in which it is necessary to recognize money-laundering. Bankers, attorneys, private investigators, title companies, and law enforcement agencies all need to be familiar with money laundering techniques. This article is a useful primer, particularly the way you itemize money laundering as meaning two different things. Kudos.

  • How to Launder Money   18 years 33 weeks ago

Car washes, laundromats and gambling trips are small scale. For big-time money laundering, you want to OWN the casino (talk about a business that processes a lot of cash . . .).

The story (whether true or not) is that casinos were originally built in Las Vegas so mobsters could launder very large amounts of money (see: the Warren Beatty movie, "Bugsy"). Then, in the late 60's, Howard Hughes began buying Las Vegas casinos as a legitimate investment, and his accountants had to figure out a reliable cash accounting system. Before that, it seems, no one was particularly interested in keeping track of precisely how much money the casinos brought in. Now you know why that might have been true.

    Hi Linsey.

We just signed up for the online dvd subscription rentals for the same reason you mentioned.

We were driving to the nearest library and enjoying the heck out of the free movie selection, but the gas cost ended being more than double what the online service cost. (We're really out there in terms of distance to things.) For a while, our oldest dog had some medical stuff going on (still does, just not a vet visit twice a week anymore) so we were going to this town anyway. Now that we don't have to, the online service is the way to go.

And - I'm with you - some generic brands ROCK. In this region, the Hannaford chain has the best store brand selection I've ever seen. Dirt cheap, and they really go the extra mile. In addition to all the normal store brand stuff, they are offering store brand gourmet vinegars, preserves, spice blends and more.

I've been thinking about checking out some additional investment / financial advice books. This looks like a good one, with some real world advice. If it has some humorous stories included, all the better. It's hard to find that in an investing book.

    Thanks for the review.

I read a comment earlier saying "you make it sound easy to make friends" I'm a consultant for Dale Carnegie Systems and work with people who struggle with human relations. From my experience I have come to an understanding that we create out ouw limitations. That if we can change ourselves, our communication, perception we TRULY change the world around us or a least our view of it. As we change our perception so does the actual world. I keep a blog about ideas of leadership, communication, and stress management if you are interested on learning mor check it out! http://sreupert.squarespace.com/

We purchased a memory foam topper about 2 years ago. It helped for a while, but we're to the point where the mattress needs to be replaced sooner rather than later. The topper helps, but once the mattress starts to go, it's just a matter of time.

a decongestant. Like you, my weather witch gene kicks in during wild changes in the barometric pressure (either up or down), so I find taking a decongestant along with my analgesic helps too. As does the caffeine (a coffee's better than a cola, but beggers can't be choosers sometimes), and a couple of big glasses of water. If all else fails, I usually take a nap as well. But I like some of the other remedies you all have suggested as well. I may just try a few of those too.

  • Mind Control Guru Can Pay With Blank Sheets of Paper   18 years 33 weeks ago

If you have been in retail you would not find this guy's trick unbelievable or even that interesting. Any old till-tipper, counterfeiter or basic short change artist does a version of this in each every retail establishment. They may not go as far to demonstrate it with blank paper but 17 year old cashiers (and 40 year old managers)often get caught on the unawares when giving back the change of a fifty when the customer gave them a ten. It's easier when there is a second person (a distractor)but alone is more common. As a person who has caught many a scum bag at this kind of game the dead give away is when someone is trying to short change you and they appear loud/obnoxious, extremely talkative/friendly, or just plain weird. That's the time to really start paying attention.
As far any one who finds these scams interesting because they would like to add it to their reportoire of scams you should just dig a hole right now and jump in.

are a necessity for alot of people. My last son (in the picture above) hated swings!  I only WISH he would sit in them like my other children.  This is where the baby sling or carrier really came in handy.  I think that it is always wise to know what kind of baby you have before purchasing too many things.  You were smart to borrow a swing once you realized you might need one.  Nothing is worse than buying a new swing and then having your little one not like it.

Fortunately, there is a market at garage sales for selling what you don't use.  Or it is always nice to give your baby items to a women's shelter or pregnancy crisis center if you don't need it!

  • Choosing Between Apples and Oranges   18 years 33 weeks ago

is an excellent way to view movies for nothing!  Our library is smaller, and I believe that we've seen just about everything they have at the moment.  But it is exciting to watch the new releases for nothing.

We also live a ways out of town, so the gas back and forth has to be reserved for one trip a week.  That's why I love the online movie rental services.  My post office puts in the miles, and I sit and home and wait. Plus Netflix now has instant online viewing for episodes of the Office.  So I don't even have to wait for my mail!

    Thanks for the great comments!

Stores that cater to PROFESSIONAL electronic technicians should have "freeze spray" in pressurized cans that is used to thermally cycle electronic components (to find intermittent problems). Perhaps that might work better than the canned air found in "sell-all" stores... .

  • Telemarketers Prank Call Me - 800-266-9420   18 years 33 weeks ago

This is EXACTLY why I created TeleSpank.com. To combat the constant onslaught of incoming telemarketer calls. ESPECIALLY the ones that target older, easily-influenced individuals. Granted, not ALL telemarketers are bad, but some of them are downright slippery they're so slick with their spiels.

Anyhow, if you want to feel vindicated for all your wasted time but don't want to take MORE of your time exacting revenge, TeleSpank.com is just what you need. :)

  • How to be happy   18 years 33 weeks ago

Happiness for me is primarily about contentment and creativity. I do believe it's an inside job most, if not all the time. I think our moods can be and are affected by outward things such as money problems, loss, etc, but that true happiness can only come from within. After many years of depression I learned on my own that getting to know and love (and forgive) oneself are the initial steps to happiness. From there I learned to be authentic...which can be pretty scary but, in the end definitely worth it. I think once you make that choice and have mastered authenticity and learned to base your life on your own values instead of other's values and opinions, happiness (or at least contentment) is inevitable. Getting to know oneself is key to finding what makes you happy. For me and many others life would hold far less joyful without a creative outlet. I think everyone has an innate need to be creative and I believe those who find their creative outlet in their work or can make it their work are far more likely to be happy. I also believe spirituality can play a very important role. That, too, I believe is an inside job. From my own experience, religion was always one of the things that contributed to my depression and feeling a lack of happiness. Trying to live up to everyone's standards (especially God's) was a formula for failure and guilt. Freedom from religion and living according to my own spiritual and moral standards set me free far more than Jesus or religion ever could or ever did.

  • Cure it with Garlic!   18 years 33 weeks ago

Hi, I would just like to say that I liked your article. I have been using garlic to remove warts on my finger. I take a clove and cut in slices and rub it over the wart. After a week of doing this when I remember to do it, I have noticed that the wart is dissapearing. My neighbour has two small children that had ring worms, the mother had tried every thing to get rid of the ringworms after two months of no success in getting rid of the ringworms with all the treatments prescribed by the doctor and spending over $100.00 on oitments and antibiotics and her young daughter not being able to attend school while she had these ringworms. I had mentioned it to a woman my partner was doing some maitnance work for around her house. She told me about the garlic treatment which I passed onto my neighbour. My neighbour tried the garlic and the following week her daughter was back at school, no more ringworms. When you have tried just about everything that the doctors prescribe and the exspense with prescibed medication with out any sucess. Then who are these people to critisise such a simple method of cure using garlic. As for the wart problem I have a planters wart under my foot and I will be trying garlic on that soon. If it works then well and good. if it doesnt no harm done. Have a wonderful day.

  • Buy Baby Bunting... But don't pay full price!   18 years 33 weeks ago

I am kind of past the baby stage, probably closer to being a grandma though I still do respite foster care for newborns. I enjoyed your article! I just had a couple thoughts to add.

About strollers. I think it is important to get the best stroller you can afford. That being said, I DON'T think that means the same thing as getting the most expensive one! If you or your spouse is tall, or if there is a great disparity in your heights, it's nice to get one that has an adjustable handle. Also, check to see that the rear axle is far enough away when you push the stroller, that you don't come close to stepping on it. A stroller that is too cheap, won't have good quality wheels and you'll end up wrestling with it a lot when you use it to make it go the right direction (remember the last time you picked a bad cart at the grocery store?) These are things we learned the hard way.

And I have heard some people say they are worthless, but personally, I would not have survived without a baby swing! My favorite one is one I borrowed for the last foster baby we had. It was a portable table top version with lights and music made by Fisher Price. I think it retails for about $60, but if a few people wanted to go in on a shower gift...I loved it! I borrowed swings for all three of my babies and I thought they were a real sanity saver.
