I have an emergency fund that has recently been diminished because of two emergencies: a necessary new car and unexpected dental work. I still have a little bit left, but the dental expenses haven't been totally deducted yet, so in the next month or so I don't know how much of the fund I'll have left. But, that's what it's there for, and I will rebuild!
I think the best thing to do is to avoid using work computers for personal use altogether. It is not private and it is also very distracting. Another thing, is that people should not get involved in reading and sending "chain e-mail".
Amex touted one of these to my husband. We will be abroad and the rep said that these cards were good for travelers. I didn't look into it. I always figure that anything they are trying to sell me must be better for them!
Yes. I keep about 3 months in an emergency fund and about another month on hand so I am not living paycheck to paycheck. I will probably push for 6 months when the car is paid off.
Andrea, I think feral pigs are the new "rats"! I thought it was just a Hawaii thing . . . until my husband and I were channel-surfing a couple of weeks ago and came across an ENTIRE SHOW about feral pig-hunting in Hawaii, Texas, Florida . . . it's called "Hogs Gone Wild" and it's on the Discovery Channel. We had no idea that they were a problem elsewhere. Turns out, they are a big enough problem to warrant a tv show!
Indio, great tip about starting the veggies from seeds. I do that, too, and it's also cheaper than buying "starts." It's really easy to start seeds (save some old egg cartons). Fun for kids, too.
Do I have an emergency fund? Of course I do! Is it as comprehensive as it should be? Of course not! Recently, I had to take from my emergency fund to pay for glasses and eye exam. $440. No insurance. At that time, my emergency fund was up to only one month's wages. I know it should be three months, but when you're the sole supplier for a family of three (myself, wife, and four-month old), and only making $0.25 above minimum wage, with $30,000 of debt, it can be quite difficult to save money.
I must say that so far this spring my dog has done a better job of fertilizing the yard than this stuff. Good girl, go potty. Lots of beautiful round green lush spots. But I'm going to continue trying so I can prove to my brother inlaw that this stuff really works. He just laughs.
Wow! This is quite an extensive discussion covering literally YEARS! Anyway, thanks for an explanation of how it works. The VERY fine print on the card I got DOES detail all of the charges discussed here (I literally had to get out my madnifying glass to read it.)
I'm not getting into the whether it is good or bad argument, but I DID want to point out that the card I received today (unsolicited of course) was in a name I have not used in well over 10 years or for that matter, ever! It's a combination of my birth first name which changed upon my first marriage (Napoleonic code... you all in the south will understand) and my first married surname which changed 11 years ago when I got remarried. So I never actually had the name shown on the card. But it came to my current address where I did not live when my name was even somewhat close to that. Makes you wonder where they got their information.
I'm surprised they have not been investigated for possibly aiding terrorism or drug trafficing with it being so easy to obtain cards in names other than your own (I read an earlier post that said they got one in their Pet's name?!), and easily transferring money to another card in a ficticious name (The table actually shows there is no fee for that!). Has anyone checked their credit report to see if this card shows up on it? If it does, then what does destroying it (or using it) do to your credit score?
Thanks for that. I've been feeling pretty discouraged lately. I'm just so scared that I won't be able to provide for my kids. It kills me to think of them going hungry. But I just need to stay focused and keep going, day after day after day. Someday things will get better!
Hey guys, it's all about the box. Bag-in-box wines are proliferating. They are cheaper and easier to ship. More and more wineries are choosing this container, and the consumer enjoys the savings! I got Barrel Box cabernet sauvignon at my local Sam's for $9.98. That's the equivalent of 4 750-mL wine bottles, so about $2.50 per bottle if it were sold separately. There is another 3 liter box wine called Oak Leaf at Wal-Mart, also at $9.98. Even the more premium Target Wine Cube or Black Box brand retails around $18-$20, so less than $5 per 750 mL. The bag of wine excludes air, so it keeps longer than an opened wine bottle (if you are the only wine drinker in the house). Peace!

I called DirecTV and got Showtime for free for 2 months. Thanks a lot for this idea!!
My emergency fund balance is currently up to $1,000. I'm headed to $3k.

Still, I would appreciate more info on these.

I like Wisebread on facebook.
we have a very small one, that would get us thru an unexpected expense once but are working towards building it up.
I believe the title should read "have forgotten."
Yep, I like the peace-of-mind it brings.
