  • Ask The Readers: Do You Buy In Bulk?   15 years 14 weeks ago

Including myself, there are only two people (and a cat) living in my household, so buying in bulk sometimes turns out to be wasteful in the long run. We can't consume some bulk items fast enough to really benefit from the savings that perhaps a couple with multiple children in the house can benefit from. So we don't buy in bulk at all.

  • Why there's no reason NOT to buy store brand baby formula.   15 years 14 weeks ago

This is extremely great article and should not be the place to discuss about breastfeed vs bottle feed :)

I used to trill when someone ask me try a stored brand formula, because a cheap and poor quality of China formula used to scare us. (yes, melamine issue)
But not the good idea to ignore 'the same' products. Today we have to spend 'huge' money buying the best formula (they did tell us on TV!) for our baby.

Our pediatrician and the hospital recommended to use Enfamil and Similac, so we get along with these. We've never try others.

After read this post (I just found it), very interest to try with my little baby, this can save twice.

  • 5 Frugal Lessons I Learned From Aldi   15 years 14 weeks ago

I have been going to Aldi every since I can remember. Back to when my mom used to take me there. She still goes there, as do I, for the main things. For other items we usually go to Jewel-Osco. About 75% of everything we buy food related comes from Aldi, 15% from Wal-Mart, and 10% from Jewel. You just cant beat the price. Although its just a matter of time before Wal-Mart spear heads the grocery market and takes that over too. Wal-Mart practically has a product for every grocery line, I am sure you are familiar with it "Great Value" is the brand name they use. But all in all Aldi's bare bone methods keep costs and prices low enough to keep consumers coming.

  • 5 Frugal Lessons I Learned From Aldi   15 years 14 weeks ago

The same could be said of any grocery that doesn't have a health food/natural food section. Most mainstream grocery items are loaded with additives, unfortunately.

  • 5 Frugal Lessons I Learned From Aldi   15 years 14 weeks ago

I love Aldi. Shopping there forces me to make more whole foods and not rely on processed foods. The prices on produce are amazing. I used to pay nearly 200 a week on groceries. Now I pay about 40 at Aldi. It's crazy how many impulse buys I made when I shopped at a large grocery store. I also love the fact that I can get in and of Aldi within 30 minutes and do my whole weeks worth of grocery shopping.

Food Prices aren't the problem, it's the gas prices. It's insane

  • 7 Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Yard Sale   15 years 14 weeks ago

One thing that keeps me from feeling a productive spending environment at garage sales is overly eager sellers. I prefer to be kept relatively in peace and only be approached if I have a question.

I love it how Aldi has been labeling more and more of their product gluten free (GF)....it'd be great if they adopted a Wegman's style system and labeled EVERYTHING as gluten free or not.

  • Excel: The Most Underrated Software You Already Own   15 years 14 weeks ago

As an Event Coordinator, I use Excel for timelines when doing events, especially weddings.
It can even sort seating charts or conference accommodations and makes great schedules too.

I taught my office to use Excel for RFPs and it is now the standard. The downside of this is that because we can do so much more in such a smaller amount of time the expectations are higher for more productivity.

  • 10 Ways to Reuse Common Household Items   15 years 14 weeks ago

I take the mesh bags that I bought my apples in and crochet a handle and the bottom I crochet up . They make great bags for caring toys and clothes for little ones . I crocheted some in the school colors and the cheerleaders used them for their pompoms and water bottle and sunscreen and stuff .

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Pay For Convenience?   15 years 14 weeks ago

When I finally got realistic about my time and availability to cook decent meals for my family, I decided to indulge in some homemade food delivery for about two meals a week. It is still cheaper than me running out for fast food, it's healthier for my family, i'm supporting a friend's business, and I am saving on gas money. I was kidding myself that I could cook 7 healthy dinners for my family a week, so this is the next best thing (even better since my kids enjoy her food better and will try something new if they know she made it) Worth every penny!

You have forgotten a major player that is located in most communities, and costs NOTHING!!! Your local library, today libraries carry many if not all the current releases as well as great past run movies and TV shows, all that is required of you is to bring it back... usually you have a week do do this

  • 5 Frugal Lessons I Learned From Aldi   15 years 14 weeks ago

Aldi has all kinds of great deals for easy on the pocket foods. Organic blue corn chips, great quality dark chocolate, crispy oat rings ( instead of cheerios), hummus, small portions of good cheese, small packages of wild caught frozen fish, imported olive oil, bst free milk to name a few things I often buy there.

I LOVE the produce at Aldi. I can make a very healthy salad at a fraction of the price at any other grocery store. I don't do the box mixes because I have to eat low-sodium, but you just cannot beat their produce, meats, and dairy.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Pay For Convenience?   15 years 14 weeks ago

Just this weekend, I was suggesting to my husband that we try making pizza from scratch, since we eat it so often. He said he'd rather pay the extra for someone else to do it...I guess I agree, in the long run. But I'd rather cut my own fruit and veggies, thanks. :)

  • College Move-Out Days: The Best Time to Dumpster Dive?   15 years 14 weeks ago

When I was an RA in college, my job required me to stay past move-out days so I really enjoyed watching people get rid of things at the last minute. They were so busy with exams, they never noticed the difference between the amount of their stuff and their parents cars. When they realized that they couldn't take it all with them, they quickly discarded bulky items like fans or furniture as you mentioned.

What I noticed most though was that people threw out tons of canned food. So much, in fact, that I led a campaign to collect the food (before it hit the trashcans and dumpsters) and donate it to the needy. This end-of-the-year event was a great success, and collection sites were overflowing!

  • 5 Frugal Lessons I Learned From Aldi   15 years 14 weeks ago

I am big fan of Aldi. Love their simplicity. You bring your own grocery bag, load your grocery, small shop, saves you time. Their produce section is good. Of late, milk prices have increased a lot though.

  • 25 Easy Organizing Changes You Can Make Today   15 years 14 weeks ago

I think you've gotten some of your organizing tips backwards. The first thing to do is not to buy more stuff, even if it's storage containers! It's better to get rid of things you never wanted and things you no longer want first. Then everything else might be easy to organize. If not, then you can start looking into additional storage ideas.

For when things seem overwhelming, I do like the tip of attacking one thing at a time, such as the t-shirt drawer. This does lead to the problem of having to do everything twice. Because as you work in other areas, you'll find more things that belong in that t-shirt drawer, perhaps so many things that they won't all fit like you thought they did when you first finished the t-shirt drawer.

  • 5 Frugal Lessons I Learned From Aldi   15 years 14 weeks ago

Aldi is hands down the best on prices, food wise, if they don't have it, I don't need it. We have two here in my town and they are not only clean, but the managers and staff are so friendly. Even the customers are very considerate. Since there is less staff, there are no express lines. Aldi is the only grocery store I have ever been in where customers allow people buying less items than they are to move ahead of them in line. I have even seen other customers give people quarters for the carts.

I can't tell you how many of my friends are grocery store snobs. They go for the "experience" I saw one friend of mine at Wegmans when it first open. At she remarked how she was in heaven and don't I just love a store like that. Well, I do get my kids Webkinz there after a major holiday. Then they are marked down to as low as $2.00. I'll pay $2.00 a year to keep playing Webkinz.
