I feel like I can listen to the talking heads on TV and know what they are talking about now. Thanks for an excellent post to help us non-financial types understand a little more what is going on. Keep up the good work!
Well, the U.S. is mortally bound to its major creditors, especially China. The entire system we live in is designed around borrowing and debt, so the question is "how far does the rubber band stretch?" It seems we are pretty maxed out right now. I propose we cut WAY back on military spending, and focus more on domestic matters, and stay out of other countries quabbles. If we can eliminate the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, among others, we can regain our ability to pay of our major creditors, thereby alleviating our debt and the dollar will regain ground. We cannot foresake our own people to fight foreign disputes and then let the country go to China and say "hey, we have another trillion dollars of debt, want to buy some more US Govt bonds?" We have to stop with this vicious cycle. This will plunge us into the 3rd world, really fast.
You might be thinking about getting some reusable bags for awhile, but the fact that the convenience of free plastic bags really builds up a habit of hard to kick. Well, now you have no more reason to keep you from using reusable bags. As the website name said, you can get free reusable bags from them, the bags are not your normal boring looking reusable bags, they're like designer bags, very stylish and functional. I was kind of skeptical at first, but after I received my bags in less than week, I'm now a big believer, and happy to be playing my role in saving planet earth.
I haven't ever really been interested in this game before. But I am addicted to the sweet tea, I usually get three or so a week. Yesterday I went in and got the mediteranean piece, so I guess you can win you just have to not be trying.. Well i guess it's good that i won i'm just getting paid back for all the tea I've had since it's come out... Good luck to all of you that are still trying though.
Thank you for this thorough and considered review of my book, Internet Riches. It sounds like you really read it! (I always appreciate that in a reviewer.)
As you suggest, I wrote Internet Riches to help beginners learn about the many new, low-risk ways to start online businesses. The book's continued sales success worldwide seems to support that approach, as does the fan mail I've been getting from people inspired by the book.
I appreciate your critique and your help in spreading the word.
I invite you and everyone reading this to visit my web site, ScottFox.com, for more, including free updates to the book, a free email newsletter, blog, downloads, etc..
There really is a revolution happening online. I hope that together my book and your great blog (I am a regular reader myself) will help more readers on the path to getting their share of the e-business revolution.
Best regards,
Scott Fox

I wonder if there'd be any way to view the "obscene wagers or unbelievably obscene and depraved acts" ? I'm always curious about the extent that people will cross over the societal line.
Maxey Sanderson makes another good point, that in addition to the benefit of dollar cost averaging, any employer match to a 401k is a return on your investment you shouldn't pass up. You can read his article here: http://news.planlab.us/2008/10/what-should-i-do-with-401k/
I use vinegar for a disinfectant on the surfaces of the toilet. It is supposed to kill up to 99. whatever percent of germs. Sounds somewhat similar to a brand name cancer causing disinfectant that I used to use.
I use Borax for in the toilet and my sink.
I use a laundry detergent of 1 c. real soap flakes (grate them myself), 1 cup of washing soda and 1 cup of borax. i only need 1 Tbsp./load...if heavily soiled I MIGHT use 2 Tbsp.
For my floors, I use hot water with a touch of dish detergent (no bleach added)and some vinegar.
For stinky bathroom floors I use vinegar and for the faucets I also use vinegar.
For dirty cloth diapers, I found soaking and washing them with borax got the smell out better than with vinegar which seemed to set the smell.
I am always looking for low cost natural ways to clean everything.
My stepdaughter had them & was told to quit drinking so much Coke. Also if it can stain old documents I would hesitate to use it to clean carpet, grout or anything else that is white or light colored. Wouldn't it stain?
Huh. I'm more familiar with "October Suprise" meaning some political stunt pulled in late October with the intention being to influence the election at the last minute before an opponent has an opportunity to respond.
Tranche means something like "slice" in French, as in "piece of carrot cake" or "slice of life." So it comes from the way these mortgages are sliced and diced and recombined into different packages until it's quite difficult to trace them back, like trying to tell which molecules in your house were ones breathed by Newton.
Resently my husband and I placed and order to have carpet installed and right away the carpet company charged the credit card. After over a month still no carpet installation and talking with the carpet company I was told that they did not order the carpet because they needed to order in bulk. Every week I keep calling asking then was finaly told that the carpet was in but they had no installers and anothe week passed and still no appointment to install. The charge was disputed and now the credit card company credited the account back $1,431.16 of the original bill of $1,758.72 minus the restocking fee of 35% that the carpet company charges. What can we do this is so very unfair that we have to be stuck with paying something that we never received. Veronica
I found great humor in your post, and totally agree with your view of TV. I don't watch much television, simply because I don't think its worth the time spent. I would rather be doing something else, like time with my toddlers.
I do have a TV at home, though its old and definitely not a Flat Panel. I did buy a DTV converter box recently and wrote a post on that. About the only series I keep up with is Heroes, like you, and even that I watch most of it on NBC.com.
You did a great outline for the majority of people and I think this post is very helpful. If only everyone heeded this advice.
One thing I'm still looking into is the 529 programs for NYC. I think tax incentives are great, but having a good fund manager is more important. Too bad there is no low cost index funds for some of these programs. Would appreciate further info from anyone with more knowledge about this.
I absolutely loved this book.

@ Terry: Yep--I think the book was written with people like you in mind.
@ Scott Fox: Thanks for stopping by the post!

Thanks for writing this~
Thanks so much for these. I love this kind of stuff. I came across the origins of the term 'pork barrel' today in Marc Reisner's Cadillac Desert.

Nice to have a glossary.
Michelle beat me to it on the etimology of tranche.
As a name for the whole mess, I rather like Jon Stewart's "Clusterf#@k to the Poor House."

Phil, thanks for the quick review. I think I'll pick it up from the library and give it a look.
