  • A Prairie Farmer’s Meal Plan: Eat for a Buck or Two a Day   18 years 1 week ago

This is a great resource for those who haven't gotten their bill down very low. There are a great variety of frugal blogs out there that involve couponing, etc that can get a normal bill down below 45 for that size family. I would love to invite you to stop by my blog to see what I'm doing that relates to this post :) Thanks for the great blog! I love the variety of authors :)

Google 'self reliance' or 'food storage' for a wide variety of low cost eating sites. Most are based on storing a year's supply of basic foods but will give you many ideas including making your own mixes to replace Bisquick, Cream of soups, puddings, etc. By not buying prepared foods but cooking from scratch you'll not only save money but have healthier food.

My parents never haggled because they thought that made us look poor (which we were!). They got some kind of strange satisfaction from paying full price, and often for the highest ticketed item. When I think of that, it just makes me sad to realize where I got my own reluctance to haggle for anything. Even though I "haggled" (mediations/settlement conferences) zealously for my clients for 10 years without any shameful feelings or worries that I or my clients might be thought of as cheap, unfair, or poor, I still feel uncomfortable even thinking about asking a retailer if they could give me a discount on an item because it is partially damaged.

The last time I did that was in a Barnes and Noble and the book I wanted to buy was their only copy and it had a pen mark on the cover. The manager said they couldn't give me any discount because someone else would buy it for full price exactly as it is. So, what did I do? I bought it for full price. Sheesh!

Thanks for these tips great tips because they make it seem utterly reasonable, intelligent, and even dignified to haggle in the manner you suggested. A real win-win situation for both parties! Now, I'm inspired to haggle the very next time I make a major purchase.

  • 250 Miles With Sarge: Lessons On Loyalty, Perseverance, And More   18 years 1 week ago

What's funny is that I think My wife and I spent a day in a shelter on a mountain in VT with Sarge. It was 10 years ago. We were on the trail for a week and he was a thru-hiker. The fog was awful and the cold and rain were not much better. So we got there about noon. Sarge was already there. Same age range, same story (or what part we heard) and I know he cycles. Nice man. If it is the same guy, it is nice to know he is still about.

One of the reasons I like to get the price I want the first time around is that all of the stores are so far from where I live.  The cost to drive there and back after the cost goes down would almost negate much of the savings.  I'm better off to just get the deal when I'm there the first time.  But I could see how these methods could work for someone local!

  • Remove Car Dents Quickly and Cheaply   18 years 1 week ago

you are just "super dumb" and I apologize if it sounds offensive, coz the phrase is used only to point towards the irrational arguments you are making and towards your even greater lack of absolute basic knowledge! Now coming to the point, wood CAN NOT be liquefied because liquefaction under pressure and below a certain temperature is only applicable to gases and like we all know wood is solid! Now why don't you stop commenting here and concentrate on learning a little bit of Chemistry! Also, as far as meditation is concerned, I am sure if someone put in enough effort they might be able to liquefy wood...as for your abilities even at meditation, I am still doubtful.

My way is to check the average rating on IMDB... nearly always good results

  • Miss the Big Sale? Claim Your Savings Anyway   18 years 1 week ago

One method to get around a price adjustment (which are usually limited to 14 days or less) is to do a buy-return. That is, if you are outside of the 14 days for an "automatic" price adjustment but within the 30/60/90 day return period, buy the same item at the current low(er), sale price. Then return the new, unused item -- but with original receipt which has the higher price.

Some have questioned the ethics of a buy-return, but I don't have a problem with it personally since you're still returning new, unused merchandise within the store's return period.

  • Miss the Big Sale? Claim Your Savings Anyway   18 years 1 week ago

Here in Canada most major retailers will give you the sale price if the item goes on sale even after you've purchased it. I bought bunk beds from Sears for $1000 and they went on sale about two weeks later for $600. When I asked for a refund of the difference in prices I got it, no questions asked other than for the receipt of my original purchase. The period isn't indefinite, but 2-3 weeks seems fine.

I'm also ready to buy a new dishwasher and know the model I want. I saw it in the store, not on sale, and asked if it would be on sale soon. It will be on sale in two weeks during a weekend promotion. The salesclerk gave me a written guarantee of the sale price. I can now take that quote to some other retailers and ask if they can match or beat the price. Or I can buy it now and get the refund of the difference in a couple of weeks. I've chosen to do the comparison as I can wait a few weeks.

What's ethical about sneaking a camera into a movie theater and then putting the video footage out on the web for all to see?

I love the emergency meal plan -- a great way to have a low-cost grocery week.

  • One Way to Combat High Prices - Just Run Out of Gas   18 years 1 week ago

is my rule also for filling up. I don't want to be stranded either.

But if you live in Atlanta, you'll find that you may need to increase your minimum: I have been stuck in traffic with plenty of gas and then worried that I'd run out just b/c of the long waits, usually on major interstate highways through town. Here's a pic of Spaghetti Junction in Atlanta (not a place you'd want to pull over and wait for help). On the other hand, it sounds like some people might do anything to get free gas.

  • 250 Miles With Sarge: Lessons On Loyalty, Perseverance, And More   18 years 1 week ago

    Thanks CF and Shanel.

Just to clarify though the rest of the cyclists were ahead of us as some like to go fairly fast. But they (I heard  later) got confused at about the same point b/c the intersection had changed, but they didn't make it to a major highway. The towns we traveled through were so small, it is hard to imagine that any change would come but it happens everywhere.

    Your hikes sound fun!

  • Free Doughnut   18 years 1 week ago

I tried to see if Dunkin Donuts was offering the same deal but couldn't find a mention of it. If Canadians (or British or Australians, etc.) have great deals to share, contact us or share them in the forums.

  • Honda Hybrids   18 years 1 week ago

Any intelligent person knows oil/gas prices will only go up so there's no excuse not to develop/market more hybrid vehicles. As with any supply/demand scenario, auto makers know that as long as they keep supplies of hybrids low, their profits remain large. Sorry to be so cynical but that's reality! I don't buy the argument that technology keeps hybrid car prices high. In fact, if we really wanted, we could develop a car a lot more efficient than even a hybrid but then the oil companies would find ways to stifle that either by buying and shelving the technology or lowering oil prices. It's all about profits and politics.

I clicked the "Button", that's pretty funny :) If only it were that easy.

  • 250 Miles With Sarge: Lessons On Loyalty, Perseverance, And More   18 years 1 week ago

So impressive that you not only finished such an endurance contest but also stayed calm -- even when it seemed you were lost! I feel like I just watched a great little documentary about your cycling team with you as the calm narrator and Sarge as the hero/coach. I love it that Sarge was strong enough to admit his mistake! And, also that you were, on the one hand, respectful enough to gently broach that topic with him, but, on the other hand, not willing to remain silent for too long when you realized the group's safety might be at risk.

I prefer very long day hikes myself (either the Yosemite Half Dome hike or city hikes all over Los Angeles County), but the same principles apply, especially when I take friends with me who are not used to that type of endurance. It's crucial that we help each other through the tough, scary times. Thanks for drawing out the similarities to real life goals in the rest of our lives. Your points will help me push through the difficult times at home and work, too!

  • More Tax Credits Coming for Homebuyers?   18 years 1 week ago

I certainly do hope that it is not passed because the housing market seems to be doing fine how it is and changing something like this may ruin it.

  • Things to insure, things not to insure   18 years 1 week ago

Insurance is risk management, but risk management can be applied to other disciplines in life.

Risk management in investing is usually called diversification. If you'd like to learn more about how you can diversify your investments check out: http://www.investorpitstop.com

  • More Tax Credits Coming for Homebuyers?   18 years 1 week ago

In Florida housing tax credits could be as high as $12,000 for buyers. That's quite an incentive.

  • Is the New OTC “Alli” Just Money Down the Toilet?   18 years 1 week ago

While the website gives the example that for every 10 lbs you would normally lose, alli will help you lose 15, it is not recommended for people with that little to lose - it is just for visualization. If you read the back of the starter kit (the plastic box with the clear top), it has a table of heights and weights and says that if you weigh less than the entry for your height, that alli is not recommended. It really is meant for people with more weight to lose. (There are many categories in the message boards, including one specifically for those who have 100+ lbs to lose)

The treatment effects that are listed are the most common, but that doesn't mean that everyone gets them. If I remember correctly, the studies projected about 10%. Every medication has side effects. That's what all the fine print in magazine ads and the fast talking in TV/radio spots is for. Sure, the possibility may not be worth it for someone who has 20-30 lbs to lose, but for someone who has over 100+ lbs and wants to get out of the "danger zone" (morbidly obese) as soon as possible without surgery, alli can be a godsend. Looking at the packaging, promotional materials, and the website, they are quite clear that alli is a *supplement* to healthy lifestyle changes, not a replacement.

The pill itself binds to (a limited amount of) fat so your body can't digest it, and it passes through your system intact. So while it doesn't actually suppress appetite (you feel just as full, since you're eating a similar amount at first), it does lower the number of calories absorbed. There is a comprehensive program on the website that can be used with or without the pill, which includes diet modification, behavior modification and exercise (and has weekly checkins along with new tips to stay motivated or eat differently every week). For people who don't stay beneath the recommended # of calories and fat grams listed for their weight, they may get "treatment effects" - the gross symptoms you usually see listed. But from reading the message boards, most of the people with treatment effects are ignoring the directions.

There are also a couple of doctors and pharmacists officially on the board to answer questions and they will answer simple questions, although they are quick to tell people to see a doctor in person if something is out of their scope.

  • One Way to Combat High Prices - Just Run Out of Gas   18 years 1 week ago

Gas prices are out of control now, I saw $3.95 for regular today. It's sad we have to get used to this.

The cause of these high prices is the high price of oil, and if you invest you can actually make money on these high prices. I talk about this money making strategy at http://investorpitstop.com/files/37ffe470d2a4e2c4d7f5af8073aa16bf-16.html

  • 7 tips to avoid watching a crappy movie.   18 years 1 week ago

One of the great benefits of Netflix is that over time you build up a community of people that like the same movies you do. Those reviews are much more reliable than any "experts." And even if you happen to get a dud, you can return it more easily because you don't feel as though "I paid $5 for this movie, I have to watch it." You just put it in the mailbox and get another... the sooner the better!

  • One Way to Combat High Prices - Just Run Out of Gas   18 years 1 week ago

AAA Plus and Platinum Plus members get free gas when they run out, too. Usually only 2-3 gallons, but it is free. I dispatched for AAA for a few years and people abused this all the time, and I'm sure it's gotten worse since gas prices have risen.
