  • Telling My Daughter the Truth about Her New 'Friend,' The Salesclerk!   16 years 38 weeks ago

    (found your article on Consumerist)

i teach tenth and twelfth grade, and I can't tell you how many of my students succumb to sales techniques. They HAVE to acquire the newest, best, most shiny, new objects. In fact, one of my students last spring ecstatically told me that she had "befriended" the head salesclerk at a local luxury store, so she could be in the loop when new stuff arrived. It seemed to make her feel important, which is so sad.

I think you did your daughter a favor in two ways: A) by letting her earn her own money and thus be responsible for her purchases and B) by disabusing her of the notion that every friendly person is a friend. Frankly, I think the second element is the most important--understanding that difference can have implications for her personal safety, as well. I just shudder about how many "friendly" adults are out there being "nice" to kids.

I find that if I first get out all the ingredients I need for my recipe before I start measuring and mixing and then put them back one-by-one as I use them, I end up more relaxed and with a cleaner kitchen.

  • What's the Right Way to Save?   16 years 38 weeks ago

I am in the camp that saves before paying down debt. This is a recent development for me. I used to always pay down my debt first. Here's why I changed my strategy.

In the past six months I've had a few friends who paid down their credit cards with very large lump sum payments. The credit card companies then lowered my friends' credit limits! So now these people don't have that cash, AND they don't have that credit either. Credit card companies seem to be doing this more and more. I understand why... they don't want to write off any bad debt.

So that's why I'm in favor, at this time in the credit crisis, for people to save before paying down the debt. I'd be scared to not have the cash OR the credit.

If you want a board game to teach you basic economics, try Power Grid or Puerto Rico.

It actually is a fun game to play. I was introduced to the game when I took a rich dad class at my local community college (I live in Phoenix). One of the times we played we were allowed to bring a guest so I brought my mom and she loved it so much my parents bought the game. It is one of our families favorite games to play together.

I do know that you can find local cash flow clubs where local people get together to play the game. You can find where they are located on the community tab at richdad.com. As far as I know the clubs are free to join and free to play.

Add to grey/black tanks to deoderize. Finger-bowl made in bath stink conserves water. Disinfect toothbrushes. Soak smelly re-shpped clothes to deoderize. Will try as toner (use plain witch hazel now) andwindex, and goo-gone.

Since we're always on the go, with limited space & constant cleaning demands in our RV, not to mention the encroaching odors-vinegar is becoming our save-all.
It's great to add to fresh, grey&black tank water. When conserving water, it works grat in the bath sink as a "finger-bowl" mixture to disinfect/rinse hands all day.

Favorite use: removing B.O.smells from shirts, jackets, etc. Especially when re-shopping, items look clean, but suddenly smell mixed w/body heat (@ 1st chked deoderant). It kills all bacteria in cloth & clothes smell fresh as new!
Now to wean us off windex & all purpose cleaners, wish we knew about it's goo-gone effects (savings $7). Plan to try it as a hair rinse vs buying special shampoos! Was proud to find plain witch-hazel $1 as a cheap travel-toner (water conserve idea), but will try vinegar out of curiosity. I'll bet it works to disenfect toothbrushes too, as well as those silly light-gadgets.janice & Clay

  • Will "forced frugality" last?   16 years 38 weeks ago

As a reaction to all the moralizing I hear about frugality, I actually find myself being less frugal than I was a year ago. I don't go overboard, I mean I've never been able to spend a lot because I never had a large income, though I did go through a rough spot about 10 years ago due to overuse of credit. In the process of getting a handle on that, I went to a "cash" system, where I really don't use credit now at all, except where I absolutely can't avoid it.

When I was really in dire straits, I was very penny-conscious and did all kinds of things to cut back, but when things began to improve, I loosened up a little because I couldn't stand it any more. I am not talking big ticket items, I mean I started buying a package of cookies or a used book once in a while - little luxuries that helped me tolerate the deprivation. At this point, knock on wood, but there's a lot to do at work, so much that my job looks like it could survive the recession. I haven't cut back much because there isn't much to cut.

However, since the first of the year I've been splurging a little here and there, things I wouldn't have done last year, like a weekend getaway. As I said, I think I've gotten sick of the moralizing on how we should ALL be "doing our part" by cutting back. At some point my contrary streak rebels. Besides, someone has got to spend the money that's going to get us out of this economic slump. When the economy is back on its feet with consumer confidence up and jobs being created, you'll have me to thank... ha!

  • What's the Right Way to Save?   16 years 38 weeks ago

Capital One recently raised my interest rate from 8.9 to 17.9. When I called and asked why, their response, "It's not you, it's the economy." I don't have much of a balance, but suddenly those finance charges are eating up a lot more money than I care to give them. I'll save when they're paid off.

  • Cashflow: The Board Game That Will Teach You To Be Rich, If You Can Afford It.   16 years 38 weeks ago

Well. If I could turn $250 in profit selling a board game to well-meaning folks at various levels of financial desperation, I could be rich too.

    Caveat emptor.

  • Telling My Daughter the Truth about Her New 'Friend,' The Salesclerk!   16 years 38 weeks ago

And I have. I've told my kids more than once that just because commercials or salespeople say something doesn't mean it's true. I hope they're growing into savvy and thoughtful consumers with some gentle guidance from me.

No. CARBS count in the end. Fat does NOT store in fat cells easier, since carbs trigger the release of insulin which makes you store the carbs as fat. Calories mean NOTHING compared to carb intake. Fat and cholesterol are necessary nutrients, something that carbs are not. There is no minimum carb intake the human body needs. The body only uses carbs as a fuel source because it's easier, NOT because it's better for you. Fat is a better fuel source and does not increase insulin production, something necessary to store body fat. The idea that fat makes you fat is outdated and incorrect.

Rental residential real estate in the past has been a nice way to supplement your day job.

There is nothing passive, however, in being a landlord.

Especially in today's environment of declining home values AND declining rents.

People here who were cash-flow positive on their rentals 5 years ago are now losing several hundred dollars monthly.

With all we know about Robert Kiyosaki's personal history and his half-baked financial prescriptions, why do financial writers still take him seriously?

  • Telling My Daughter the Truth about Her New 'Friend,' The Salesclerk!   16 years 38 weeks ago

Nice comments, "Guest," project much? How is any of what she said a "rant?" And assuming the child has insecurities and obstacles is just weird--if the little girl thinks this random salesgirl is now her friend after such a quick meeting, sounds like she has quite a lot of confidence in herself. Or at least, it's another way of looking at it.

I think she told the truth in a very gentle but effective way.

We've been watching Dead Like Me on Hulu, and this salesgirl's strategy isn't a new one, (I remember it from when I was a tween and my Dad would drag me to Wet Seal. I had a very different reaction however) and I couldn't help but think of it when I read this post as it's pretty close to the scenario that plays out in "Shallow End." (Season 2, Ep. 4 Yes, I am a dork and looked it up.)
Except her mom doesn't clue her in that it's part of the salesgirl being good at her job so when she goes back all dolled up in the clothes she was sold and sees her new BFF using the exact same lines and strategy, she feels betrayed and ashamed.

Educating our kids on boundaries and the roles people play in this world isn't a bad thing.

  • Telling My Daughter the Truth about Her New 'Friend,' The Salesclerk!   16 years 38 weeks ago

Don't listen to those people being rude.

if you're a decent mother, your daughter will get over some random lady at a store not genuinely liking her. It's way more important to teach her about money, saving, and being thrify because those are things that will make her a safe, healthy adult, and more importantly, help her to teach her future children how life works.

What isn't important are petty little mall friendships now, what's important is that your daughter is equipped for life and will learn the skills that she needs to pass on one day.

  • Cashflow: The Board Game That Will Teach You To Be Rich, If You Can Afford It.   16 years 38 weeks ago

I have played Robert Kiyosaki's Cashflow 3 times. Here's what I liked about it:

    1. Taught me how to complete a set of personal financial statements - and helped me visualize income, expenses, assets, liabilities for a pretend character

    2. Taught me to evaluate, accept or refuse certain investments and expensive doodads that show up in life.

    3. Taught me to look for ways to increase passive income until it is enough to cover my living expenses.

    4. Taught me that once I reached financial independence, I can reach for and attain even larger goals.

If the game's price tag is too much, well, I might agree that relative to other board games the price is way steep. But at least it got my mind thinking in financial terms and there is probably a payback in future earnings realized from the enlightenment. Compared with the tuition I paid in University for one semester in Classical Greek History, I'd say I've been more clearly ripped off by more noble educational sources.

Regarding the comment about reporting carbs because they are the most "fattening" part of the meals... Gram for gram, fat has 225% of the calories of a carb or a protein. Fat = 9 calories/gram. Carb = 4 calories/gram. Fats also make you feel "more full" for "longer" than most carbs.

We could also address how much easier it is to store a fat in a fat cell than it is to get a carb into a fat cell (which would lessen the impact of carbs even further).

So, gram for gram, fat is more "fattening" than carbs. She reports the calories, which is really what matters in the end.
