I'm nowhere near even considering a family of my own yet, but maybe about $165,630?

So much that it forces you to weigh having more against any of your other life dreams. At north of $250,000 per child, plus college cost, that equates to a significant chunk of retirement, countless trips, debt freedom and list could go on. To raise a family well, family growth decisions must be considered just as any other of life's significant decisions, including opportunity cost, monetary cost, time cost, emotional cost and the like. Trying not to sound heartless, but rather reasonable.

  • Make Your Own Ketchup   15 years 40 weeks ago

Hi, guest. Good questions. First, the mayo. The recipe only makes a pint (a little short of that, actually). I have to confess that because it was so good, we ate it really fast. So, I never had it past 2 or 3 days, tops. Since it has raw egg in it, I wouldn't want it around for any longer than that, just because I'm sort of a worrier about raw eggs. It's so good, freshly made.

As for the ketchup, the story is the same. While testing the recipe, I never found a barn-burner sale on tomato paste, so I didn't make a big quantity. The last batch I tested, I think we had for about 2 weeks (kept in the refrigerator). I suppose if I hit a big sale on tomato paste and wanted to make a large quantity, I'd can the sauce. I'd even refrigerate that after opening, too, though. I live in a tropical, humid climate, so I probably refrigerate more stuff than other people. I have no qualms with the cheap stuff that lasts forever -- I buy that, too. Making-your-own is great for when you want something a little fancier, or want to control what goes into it.

  • Win a Ticket to the I_Blog Conference!   15 years 40 weeks ago

I really wanted to go to blogworld, but it didn't work out for me. This would be a great opportunity to attend a blog conference, and is quite close to me. The Iowa wine and beer session would be great! On a more serious note, the transparency and blogging session looks interesting to me. And of course the collaboration vs. competition...;)

A sum that I'm not able to fathom yet!

Our daughter's only seven months old and so far we've kept costs low with breastfeeding, cloth diapers, bed-sharing, used / gifted clothing and toys, etc. ... it will be much tougher as she grows older. So many expensive lessons, places to travel together as a family, toys, clothing, ... university. This last expense is the scariest, even with all our hopes for scholarships / bursaries / alternative schooling!

It costs more than you can imagine, but just having them is priceless. You can rear them so that they understand the value of money and what things cost though. In my own experience with my two children, they look carefully at the prices of things and weigh that in their choices of necessity and wants, and they are only 10 and 8! While it does cost more money to have children than not, even with all the tax breaks you can get, there is nothing more "worth it" in the world than a tight hug of little arms around the neck and hearing "I love you, Mommy (or Daddy)". That alone is worth any dollar amount on the planet.

  • Think Twice Before Ditching Your Current Bank   15 years 40 weeks ago

I dumped Bank of America last year for the Boeing Employees Credit Union, and have never looked back. Bank of America's corporate behavior over the last couple of years has really bugged me, and in Washington and Idaho, we don't have any of the mobile banking options - plus, it often took over a week for purchases to clear my account.

I also had issues with re-occurring fees from subscriptions that I had never signed up for. Like, one time, I bought a piece of software that was supposed to help me wipe malware from my computer. Not only did it crash my PC, but a year later, I found the company taking an unauthorized subscription "fee" out of my account, even though I wasn't using the software at all. Getting ahold of the company that made the software was tough - they don't publish a phone number, and only respond to forum complaints. BofA wasn't willing to reverse the charges, so I dropped them and probably 10 or so unauthorized charges from magazines, online "support", and other businesses that I wasn't even aware were charging me for stuff.

Priceless! Each of mine has been the joy of my life....They've educated me more than my graduate degree in college. They've motivated me more than hundreds of seminars. They've enriched my life more that every annual raise that I've gotten. They've pushed me through the tough times in life when I didn't think I could succeed. How much could I have spent on those things? Honestly, their "cost" is a negative number. They are "income" valued much higher numbers on biweekly sheet of paper I take to the bank.
My Kindergartener knows that she EARNS her money for being polite/helpful/kind, a personal daily goal, keeping her bedroom tidy, and her work (school). At the end of the week, she decides how much of that should be donated (and to what cause), saved (for something special), and spent.
Raising financially secure, well brought up children is not a financial investment. It has little to do with a dollar figure. If you're looking to quantify any aspect, look at your watch....How much time did you spend with your little ones today?

  • How to Make Moonshine   15 years 40 weeks ago

    Matt,
Gave it some thought when I re-read your post. Was it clear when you put the wash in the pot? Did you have any chunks? If the wash was fine and the product was not, you may have scorched the bottom. Sediment would burn and large amounts of yeast can give off a nasty smell and taste. The bad thing is, there is almost no way to recover from it. No matter how many times you run it through again and again, the smell and taste remain.

  • A Mortgage Crisis Solution   15 years 40 weeks ago

There have been some rule changes, making it easier for loan servicers to agree to modifications on behalf of the investors. But they haven't had the desired result, because (as you say), actually negotiating the modifications is too much work.

But that's where the recent news comes in. Yes, it'll be very expensive to renegotiate all these mortgages—but perhaps not as expensive as tracking down all the paperwork and getting all the reassignments properly documented.

And I think the servicers may be more incentivized than you think. There are apparently rules requiring that they cover payments to the junior tranches when there are delays in the things that they're supposed to be handling (such as foreclosures).

  • The Case for Expensive Shoes   15 years 40 weeks ago

I wanted to add that for women with small feet (I usually wear a 6.5), boys' shoes are a great value if you're looking for a basic sneaker. Even basic boys' shoes at a place like K-Mart, if you can believe it, seem comparable to the women's athletic shoes you can buy at the mall. Granted, I'm not a heavy user of running shoes or anything like that, but I traveled all over Europe in a pair of black boys' basketball shoes and they held up amazingly.
