Thanks for posting this, it has inspired me to go buy an M-audio Keystation 88es instead of a "personal" keyboard. So many cool options! :D

It is possible to find good, fuel efficient manual, tranmission vehicles in the US as long as you're willing to buy new. It may take some time (or some trading by the dealer) but they are available. I bought a manual transmission Toyota Matrix two and a half years ago and had to wait a few weeks to get the vehicle. Had I been willing to buy an automatic, I could have driven it off the lot that day.

While I'm glad I bought the manual transmission, it does make it more difficult when going on trips and trying to share driving. If I'm the only one who regularly drives a stick shift, we're not taking my car. I've seen many people who say they know how to drive a stick or people who are convinced they can teach others to drive a stick in "5 minutes" just do horrible things to the clutch of various vehicles. I also do wonder how having a manual transmission affects resale value. It certainly decreases the pool of potential buyers if nothing else. Not a big deal for me, as I plan to drive the Matrix until the wheels fall off, but something to consider.

And, as for eating while driving a stick shift, it is possible. It's not easy in city traffic, but it can be done. Of course, I have multiple t-shirts with Frostee stains on them that proves that I haven't completely mastered the art yet, but it is possible.

I've never owned an automatic and don't really like driving them. I feel like I am not in control of the acceleration and deceleration.

But I don't think you'll really save the money on a new car in the United States simply becasue of the lack of options. I wanted to buy a hybrid five years ago when I needed to get rid of my pickup for a car after my daughter was born, and the only manual transmission hybrid -- in cars supposed to get better mileage! -- was the Honda Civic. It was more expensive than the Prius, and cost the same as the automatic hybrid CIVIC.

I also couldn't find any reasonable economy cars with manual transmissions that were of any real quality. They just don't sell here in the US, so the supply/demand ratio makes them harder to find, harder to buy and even if the end price is cheaper the time and effort and selection make it at least a wash.

I didn't realize that only 5% of (US)Americans drove stick shifts/straight drives -- I have been driving one since college and have to reorient myself to the controls of automatics.

  • 16 Ways to Make Your Clothes Last Longer Without Spending Big   16 years 45 weeks ago

Gently used designer garments and shoes are available on ebay. Because name brand designers use high quality materials and manufacturing processes, the clothing and shoes typically last longer.

Search for your favorite designer or fabric type (for example, "men's shirt 100% silk XL") in ebay and support recycling while building a classy wardrobe.

  • How to Save Gas, $30,000 and Your Pride   16 years 45 weeks ago

here, in quebec, we are half and half... and we take pride to be able to drive with a stick and be able to go to eat at the drive-tru... not easy, but doable !

  • How to Save Gas, $30,000 and Your Pride   16 years 45 weeks ago

Keep in mind that if you drive manual, you'll need one hand to work the stick. The other hand goes on the steering wheel, so you'll have no free hand to eat and drink in city traffic.

This is one of the reasons why drive-tru fast food is not as common in Europe as it is in America.

So going manual could help you lose weight!

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   16 years 45 weeks ago

    To Guest #31.

If you read my post then you will see that I did say that it is a Visa debit card, and even the post title says so.  I said that you had to load money onto it.  I just did not like the fact that it was sent to us unsolicited as if we applied for the account.  So I don't see how this is misinformation.  If you read the comments it seems that a lot of other people experienced this, too.

  • 10 frugal things to try before you die (updated)   16 years 45 weeks ago

The only ones I haven't tried are #3 (ick! Brewed my own beer though, which is cheaper and great quality)and #9, although I have bought marked-down bruised fruit and veggies and cut the bad bits out. I agree that Goodwill is not very cheap, but have found other cheaper and better thrift stores. Love yard sales, too!

I drove a manual for years, but finally gave it up after having more than enough of clutching to maintain 2 mph in New England traffic. With today's efficient 5 and 6 speed automatics, not to mention CVTs, manual transmissions are often no more efficient anyway. Granted, they are more reliable, make a decent theft deterrent, and some say are more fun. But I'd file driving a manual transmission under "good to know in a pinch," but not worth the $30k savings in exchange for the added aggravation. If I lived out in the middle of nowhere, it'd be a different story...

  • Getting Rid of Acne   16 years 45 weeks ago

It is sometime since the post but I'm just discovering this wonderful article. I'm 50 and having breakouts that I never had as a teenager or in my 20s. It is cystic acne around my chin and under my nose. This started about 2-3 years ago and just terrible huge pimples with no heads and did it ever hurt. I am also a compulsive picker (lol) that has to restrain herself. Mainly because my teen year issues were blackheads. The pain is was always making me mess with the acne just to get some relief. I felt I was starting menopause and this was worse every month with my cycle or even if I didn't have my cycle. The Dermatologist was the only one who really took that part seriously and was going to test my hormones. I am glad that I didn't mess around with my OB/GYN or Regular Doc since they gave me the same old song and dance about acne.

I'm so glad to see that others have had some of the same experiences. My teenage son started breaking out by the time he was 9 or 10. Nothing helped him from over the counter. My Ex insisted that he try the Pro-Active before I took him to the Dermatologist. It helped some but dried out his face and was not consistent with the results. He had to take the strong medication (I'm not good with medication names) for six months but it worked wonders on his skin and he has had very little problem since. He has almost no scaring since I pushed to get him in there and treated.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   16 years 45 weeks ago

I also received a netSpend Visa Debit Card in the mail and had never applied for it. Hesitant of such mailings and knowing that years have gone by since credit card companies were allowed to mail unsolicated cards to consumers, I did read through the information to figure out why this had been sent to me. I feel that this type of marketing is going against the nature of the consumer protection and advertising laws but usually they are just skirting around a legal point.

  • Pianos cost too much? Get a synth!   16 years 45 weeks ago

I have a very basic digital piano -- weighted keys, several voices, recording ability, metronome. I love it! I never need to have it tuned and I can practice w/o impinging on anyone. The same cannot be said by the clarinetist in the house. The only downside is that I cannot play during hurricane-related power outages, which is when I MOST NEED to play.

  • How to Make Moonshine   16 years 45 weeks ago

I, and some of my friends, often drink straight shots of 151. I also know two people who don't mind shots of everclear when it's available (It's illegal in California). I don't know that it's "comfortable", and definitely not something you enjoy the taste of, but it's really not all that bad either.

  • Pianos cost too much? Get a synth!   16 years 45 weeks ago

For a child who's studying music (even through early adolesecent) and especially if you are taking Royal Conservatory, then buying a synth (even with weighted keys) is a horrible idea. There _is_ a different feel between real pianos you have to take your practical exams on and a synth, and as someone who grew up before weighted keys existed, I know how difficult it can be to adjust. Feeling a hammer strike the strings vs. what synths do will always be different.

Having said that, experimenting with sounds, and all the benefits a synth provide also open up a whole new world of possibilities. For some early musicians, this may be just what they need to keep their interest and give them tons of room to grow vs just having a "Regular" piano.

You make some very solid points; I think it's important for people to consider what their goals are at any time before deciding.

  • Pianos cost too much? Get a synth!   16 years 45 weeks ago

My ten-year-old son is taking piano lessons and doing very well. Sometimes he gets distracted just trying things out on our piano--the pedals and so on. If he had hundreds of new sounds to try he'd never get the technical skills down that he needs to know first.

On the other hand, right about the time that interest in piano seems to inevitably wane (puberty, perhaps), this sounds like a great idea to rejuvenate interest.

Another thing--from an interior design perspective, it's hard to beat a piano--no cords, nice colors, and you can set a vase of flowers on it.
