I think the answer to that question is myself. Thankfully, I've learned from my mistakes made when I was younger.

Of course you can. Anyone taking medication for high blood sugars can accidentally over-medicate and end up with low sugars.

Thanks Jennifer. I half agree with you on the Lazy Couponer. I don't think her method is anything but lazy. I think it just a lot of information to process and that scares people away.

  • 9 Simple Ways to Stop Impulse Buying   14 years 7 weeks ago

This article is going to save my life...that's extreme but it will save my bank account. I have a horrible problem of impulse buying, and college student I can't afford this habit. I will be the first to admit that I'm one to use shopping as a way to feel better, so if I'm down I hit the mall. Huge mistake! But the opposite is bad too...if I shop after accomplishing something I will buy an item as a reward/way to say "GOOD JOB!" I guess my simple solution would be to stay away from stores, but thats impossible so I will follow these tips instead.

  • How to Stay Focused at Work   14 years 7 weeks ago

I couldn't have read this article at a more perfect time. With the start of spring it seems like staying focus at work is my greatest struggle. All I want to do is stair outside my window at the gorgeous weather and it daydream. These tips were extremely helpful and I'm going to start using them today! Beginning with saying no to multitasking...as soon as I try and do multiple things its like my brain goes blank! Also, I've started drinking more water through my day and I have to say its helped. Dehydration is the most common reason behind fatigue, and we all know you can't focus when you're tired!

  • 6 Tips for Spring Cleaning on a Budget   14 years 7 weeks ago

These tips are so helpful, thank you. I'm a college study and everything I do is on a budget, including the simple (not simple if your aren't organized like me) act of cleaning. Spring cleaning is important in order to get rid of things and organize before packing up my dorm for the end of the semester. But I can afford cleaning supplies that only need to be used for the next 5 weeks...and lets me honest in those 5 weeks I probably wont use them. So this weekend when I start my spring cleaning marathon (in order to procrastinate more) I will be using this article.

  • 21 Disposable Products You Can Reuse   14 years 7 weeks ago

Some people may think this is really gross, but it works well for our little family -- and saves us money that we had literally been throwing away: One cloth napkin for each meal for three days.

Each family member uses their cloth napkin for breakfast, lunch and dinner; after every meal, they clip it to their personal marker which hangs in the kitchen. If the napkin is too soiled to be reused, then of course a new one can be used. After dinner on the third day, our 11 y/o daughter deposits them in the laundry bin and clips a new napkin to each marker.

It may sound unsanitary or extreme frugality, but we are not messy eaters so there is VERY little soil accumulating on the cloth napkin. (Guests are ALWAYS given clean, fresh napkins!)There have often been times after the third day of use that our napkins are still clean and tidy. Not only do we save money by not purchasing paper napkins, we are hopefully helping the environment.

I have taught myself about personal finance. I studied finance at Bryant University. I read every thing related to finance that I can get my hands on. An of course, I have learned from my mistakes. We need to take responsibilty for our own financial futures!

  • Ask the Readers: Who Taught You The Most About Personal Finance?   14 years 7 weeks ago

My Mother-in-law taught me the most about finance. She raised 5 kids on my father-in-laws salary. He was a laborer and did not make "good" money until the kids were already out of the house. In the winter, he was not able to work, so his pay needed to last.

They wanted to move from their mobile home (they had 4 kids at the time). So, instead of adding onto the mobile home, they built a small Cape Cod sytle house to accomodate their 5 kids. They built it themselves in their time off. My husband was just a toddler when they did this and he enjoyed helping his father so much that we built our own home 21 years ago. We saved so much money and would not be able to have the home we have right now. Of course, our home is not huge, like alot of people's, but it fits us just fine.

My mother-in-law is a blackbelt saver. She stockpiled sale items. When there was a limit, she sent all five kids through the register. They grew their own food in the garden. She bought the kids clothes on sale and used handme downs for each child. She still hangs out her laundry and cooks most meals at home from scratch. They do all the landscaping on their home and when they need help, call their sons to help out.

They invested their money in conservative mutual funds and cd's. The result: they have more than enough money to live well in their retirement years. They are in the seventies now and travel when they want. They still do all the things they taught me to do. I am so lucky: not only do I have a wonderful husband (for the past 24 years) but a mother and father in law.

    Who's said you can?
Hypoglycemia is the opposite of what you get from the type II diabetes ...

  • How to Stay Focused at Work   14 years 7 weeks ago

I definitely agree with all points, especially with drinking more water and getting lots of sleep. Getting up every so often to go to the bathroom keeps you from sitting in a tired slump all day, plus getting your 6-8 hours of sleep is just way better way for your brain.

My mother was probably my best teacher -- definitely my first teacher. We learned that it was okay to wear hand-me-downs, to go to yard sales, to save money, and to not be greedy. She also taught my sisters and I the importance of charity.

Of course, I also learned things from my father, teachers, and the online community. Experience is a good teacher, too.

Now, I find that I need to be the good example for my husband and children. It starts when they're young. :)

  • 5 Reasons Why I Don’t Clip Coupons   14 years 7 weeks ago

Most of my coupons are printed online and are for over the counter drugs. These I find have the biggest savings and are something that we always need. Recently, I've gotten several boxes of Advil Cold & Sinus (reg. 4.99) for 99 cents each and childrens Tylenol (ranging from $7-10 depending where you shop) for $2 each. For food I mostly just pricematch to get all the sales at my favourite store and limit my couponing to the meds we buy.

  • 5 Reasons Why I Don’t Clip Coupons   14 years 7 weeks ago

At last - some common sense on this subject! You are absolutely right about everything.... Maybe that's not something you hear every day ; )

  • 5 Reasons Why I Don’t Clip Coupons   14 years 7 weeks ago

We don't HAVE coupons here. Our supermarkets do have catalogues with weekly price reductions - but mostly on pre-packaged rubbish I can't or won't buy anyway (they use them as "loss-leaders" - to get people in the store), and fresh produce (vegetables, fruit, dairy, delicatessen and meats/poultry/fish) is the single most expensive section of our stores. I detest the way they reward unhealthy eating or non-allergy sufferers so much :(

(Oh, and I'm in Australia, BTW)

MYSELF! Lol! My parents are still terrible with money, and I'm afraid to say they didn't teach me much in the way of financial responsibility. It's been hard and I'm still learning.

  • Ask the Readers: Who Taught You The Most About Personal Finance?   14 years 7 weeks ago

It was my father for me. It all started off with a piggy bank when I was 7 years old. Money (small change) collected every quarter was deposited into a bank account.

A combination of my parents and Khan Academy have helped me understand personal finances.

  • Ask the Readers: Who Taught You The Most About Personal Finance?   14 years 7 weeks ago

Definitely my mom. From my childhood onward she always involved me in my family's finances, and now that I'm out of the house and married, I still bounce ideas off of her. Whether it's about how to be frugal, the importance of savings, or the options for loans (and the pros/cons of those "free money" sources), most of my wisdom was gleaned from my mother. And I've done pretty well with it!

  • Why Women Don't Negotiate   14 years 7 weeks ago

This is the first time I have ever heard of this happening, and I feel awful for you.

On the bright side, though, the company might have done you a favor. The kind of company that revokes an offer when the candidate asks for a 3% increase(!) on a salary that's 30% lower than their previous position(!) seems like the kind of company I'd hate to work for.

Talk about better fish in the sea. This one was caught rotten!

One of my best friends in college taught me everything she knew, and is to this day the first person I go to when I have financial questions.

  • Ask the Readers: Who Taught You The Most About Personal Finance?   14 years 7 weeks ago

Everything I know about money and personal finance I learned from reading books on my own. School provided zero information on how to handle money or daily financial decisions. There are plenty of excellent self-help books available on all sorts of financial stuff. That's how I learned.
