  • Health Care Reform: Good for People Like Me   16 years 3 weeks ago

I like what I read about it, but the realist in me wonders how in the world we, as a nation, can afford it. That said, healthcare is a great thing to spend collective money on, so maybe our leaders will cut from the pork barrel and find a way to pay for it.

  • How To Cut Car Ownership Costs   16 years 3 weeks ago

When buying a used car, I shoot for a car with a reputation for lasting a long time and attempt to get it from the original owner. It can take time finding such a vehicle, but it's worth it. As you point out--I chose cars with inexpensive repairs as well. It saves a ton of money. I typically buy in the 3-7k price range. We could spend more, but our cars have been reliable at this price AND it's nice knowing we have money in the bank to buy a new 'used' car if something should happen.

  • How To Cut Car Ownership Costs   16 years 3 weeks ago

To reduce car costs try buying a used Natural Gas Vehicle. In Utah you get a $2,500 tax credit on a first time registered (new or used) in the state NGV. More savings come from state-wide 93 cents a gallon CNG. Some other states have similar savings.

I've listed the advantages and disadvantages here. There is also a link in the article to my total savings over a three month period. This might help those interested decide if CNG is worth trying.

As gas prices reach $3 a gallon and beyond the price of CNG is fixed in Utah at 93 cents. If your state promotes NGVs I would seriously consider if CNG will work for you.

  • 5 Money Ratios to Live By   16 years 3 weeks ago

To give a number like 10% for how much one should save for retirement is dangerous. For those who don't earn enough or start early enough,

10% * Salary * Years Left << How Much They Need to Retire.

Instead, working backward from How Much You Need to Retire and then coming up with an *absolute value* for annual saving, instead of a relative one (that is, a percentage of earnings), is more apt. And for most people, that number should be about the same (say, $20,000/year per person). Often that absolute value will be more than one *can* save, even with cutting costs, and so it should motivate the person to try to earn much more than they currently are earning.

  • The Government Is Hiring: Who and Where   16 years 3 weeks ago

I say goto Afghanistan or Mexico if you love no government regulations or small weak govt. easy business rules (just replace taxes with crime boss payoffs or bribes) and no government structure for services (replace police and fire with militias and your cache of everluvin guns) that
NO PRIVATE BUSINESS CAN PROVIDE without worse corruption, greed and profit based bureaucratic rules like health insurance or credit financial businesses which Wall Street has shown with it repeating CONSTANTLY in all market sectors with removed limitations or regulations, ending in boom-bust economic markets with pirates raiding the average customer citizen's pocket with lies and promises. The isn't a free market but a cowboy wildwest joke ruining the country since Reagan and the BIGGEST BLOAT BY G.W. BUSH.

Mindnumbing office administrative work is the same all over so forget jumping to a private job and escaping it.

  • Best Money Tips: Make Your Own Girl Scout Cookies   16 years 3 weeks ago

    Hey,

I can't believe the surprise when I come looking for tips on budgeting and find out how to make gild scout cookies.

Why I say my wife would kill me, is because she is addicted to their mint chocolate cookies, and if either one of us learned how to make them, two bad things would happen.

    1. We'd both gain weight.
    2. It wouldn't be as much a surprise when the girls come to the door to sell the cookies, and we wouldn't have the big cookie sale to look forward to every year when they're fundraising.

    Cheers

  • CitiMortgage Told Me to Default on My Loan   16 years 4 weeks ago

I am assuming that the plan announced by the government on March 26th are going to cover these kind of cases. I know it is up to lenders but lenders are clearly experiencing strategic defaults. There are very few people like Paul who are keeping up and Government is worried about people (25%) who are every day planning or doing defaults.

  • Laid Off? You May Have to Fight for Unemployment Benefits   16 years 4 weeks ago

I started a new job in January. Training was 50 hour work weeks, in three different offices with 3 different doctors--a little over whelming. About 5 weeks into training, I go to leave work and I cannot get into my car because someone parked 4 inches away from my drivers side. I tried to get in thru the passenger side but it's a small car with bucket seats and a stick shift and I am 40 and had back surgery. I went back into to my office and a little while later I went back out to see the other driver leaving their car (they started it to warm it up and were going back into their office). I asked them to move their car and asked them seriously how could I get in my car with how close they parked. The other driver was very young with attitude and told me it was my fault, it was my problem, not her problem, etc etc. I tried to explain that with all the snow and the parking lot covered, I parked as close as possible to the only car in the parking lot when I arrived (obviously leaving room for the other person to get in and out of their car). This young person was very rude and disrespectful. I finally said "Move your f...... car". The girl told me not to talk to her like that and I then said "move your car". She proceeded to move her car. I got into my car, got it started, seatbelt etc. and when I went to back out I noticed that she pulled into the spot directly behind me but across the driveway even though the parking lot had plenty of open spaces. Once I put my car into reverse, she pulled forward blocking me in. It was probably for 10 seconds but scary because I didn't know what she was gonna do next. She finally moved her car and I left. As soon as I got home I called my manager and told her what happened. Turns out the girl also went to my office to complain but she kept changing her story of what happened. Anyway I was written up for it. (I have never been written up for anything my entire life) and I did lose my temper and shouldn't have. Anyway, my work was like you know this can't ever happen--I agreed and we moved on. About a month later, I get into work and the doctor pulls me aside and asks me to tell him about the "incident that happened last week with Nancy (Nancy was training me). I had no idea what he was talking about. He stated that I had used profanity in front of Nancy and it upset and offended her and she has been an employee for over 10years and he let me go. Now Nancy and I had become very close and yes I did use a swear word in a conversation we were having in private behind closed doors. I was not swearing at Nancy. Now later that night Nancy calls me to find out what happened. I tell her what the doctor said and Nancy tells me that is not what happened. The manager would talk to Nancy every week to see how i was doing etc. The manager asked Nancy "Have you ever heard Dana swear"? Nancy said yes a couple of times but it was in a private conversation, never in front of patients, doctors or anything inappropriate. Now I must tell you that I was doing a great job in my training and was told by 3 different co-workers who were all training me on different things. Now the employer denied my unemployment and initially Nancy said she would write a statement for me to provide the unemployment office. Now Nancy has been told that she cannot do such and if there are any requests for anything like that it must go thru management and they will handle it. The week after I was let go, another employee who had been there for 5 years had her position eliminated because the business was down 30% since last year. Now I would guess that most adults would agree that at some point they have used a swear word at work and I personally heard 5 other co-workers use a swear word at this place of employment and they were not written up or terminated. Any advise as to how I should proceed?

  • Throw a Swap Meet Party   16 years 4 weeks ago

Our street has a block sale once a year and it's wonderful, we make good money, get rid of things we no longer need or want and get to hang out with the neighbors with coffee and bagels in the morning (and margaritas in the afternoon, depending how late the event goes! :)

We pick the same date every year, the third weekend in July, everyone saves up their stuff all year long knowing when the event is, so you can price and tag leisurely. And you get to go check out the neighbor's stuff early :)

Some families pick a charity to donate proceeds to, like the local sports' team, soup kitchen, etc. Win-win and we all look forward to the party.

  • Homebrewed Beer: Make Your Own and Save Money?   16 years 4 weeks ago

I have started to brew beer, but the shop near me can get kind of pricey for raw ingredients. Does anyone know of a place online where I can purchase cheaper ingredients? maybe in bulk?

  • Homebrewed Beer: Make Your Own and Save Money?   16 years 4 weeks ago

I am also a homebrewer and I love the hobby. A quick word of caution since you said you have dogs. You should keep them away from the kitchen when you are brewing because if the consume any of the hops it will hyperthermia in them and they will probably die.
Other than that, it is a great and rewarding hobby!

    Medieval pliers?

  • Homebrewed Beer: Make Your Own and Save Money?   16 years 4 weeks ago

and I still save a ton by home brewing with kits.

I also love Bass Ale, Heineken and Kirin Ichiban, so I save even more when brewing knockoffs of more expensive beers.

And I do it all with $15 beer kits, $15 of DME and cheap 4 gallon bpa free water jugs I bought at Sam's Club. I do a split batch, 3 gallons in each jug, using an airlock.

If you sanitize properly, I use vinegar and water, it's about as difficult as making soup. Sometimes I don't bother to carbonate, and it still tastes fine. Other times I go the extra yard and brew more expensive beers, or even use raw ingredients (hops, malts) to brew a St. Patrick's Day Guinness knockoff or my personal recipe Xmas brew.

My cost per 12 oz beer is approx. $0.47 for the daily beer and usually no more than $0.75 for the more elaborate.

The strange thing is that after drinking my usual kit beer for over a year, a mexican cervesa or one of any number of ale kits, bottled corporate beer tastes like soda pop.

  • Health Care Reform: Good for People Like Me   16 years 4 weeks ago

@wmarcy - I laugh at you. You work two jobs, and think you're paying for someone else's healthcare.

You're really helping to pay for healthcare for two of your bosses.

@Egdar - you are correct. We should allow these companies and drivers to pollute until we're all sick with asthma. That's free enterprise.

    Illness = freedom.

@Lazo - tort reform was in it just a touch, but since no Republicans would budge and try to get tort reform in the bill in exchange for a few votes, it didn't get included.

Trial lawyers give heavily to both Republicans and Democrats, but the ones who argue tort cases on behalf of consumers give to Democrats. The ones working for corporations tend to favor Republicans (but I don't think exclusively).

Tort reform is entirely anti-consumer, which is why it's so polarized. It's not about "lawyers" but about a specific type of lawyer - the John Edwards type, basically.

(Incidentally, if you look at countries with socialized medicine, they don't have many tort cases. People just take what the government gives them. No tort. Tort is an integral part of any market-based system, and the only way to really reduce tort is to increase goverment ownership of the system. The goal of the anti-tort advocates is generally to turn America into a state dominated by corporations, where the CEOs are our Kings, and we fear to sue them.)

Also note that there was no price-fixing in the bill because the legislatures didn't really want to take on the medical business or the drug business. Price-fixing is a big part of healthcare in other countries, whether nationalized or single-payer, or multi-payer. Also, our single-payer option, Medicare, does limited price-fixing (which might be why the Medicare-for-all bits never made it in).

As it was, it looks like they were trying to use a divide and conquer strategy against the insurance business - pitting some HMOs against the larger insurance industry.

It seemed like the split was between HMOs that ran hospitals and HMOs that didn't. So, an HMO like Kaiser was for the bill, while an insurance company like Blue Cross, which doesn't have hospitals, was against it.

  • Homebrewed Beer: Make Your Own and Save Money?   16 years 4 weeks ago

I'm not sure how accurate the "top layer is starting to darken" method is, but I know that taking specific gravity readings and seeing if they level off over the course of 2-3 days is. This is done using what is called a hydrometer. Not sure if you guys have one or not, it looks a lot like a frying thermometer, being a long, cylindrical tube of glass and weighted at the bottom to draw it down into the brew. Mine has 3 scales, one of them being specific gravity. Specific gravity is also something you can use to calculate alcohol content, if you know what the original specific gravity was (taken right before the yeast was pitched).
