  • 5 Awesome Alternatives to Groupon   13 years 1 week ago

I'm a Co-founder of Peekadso, a deals website much like Groupon, Living Social, or any other deal website. I can proudly say that we are way different than any other deal website. Our difference is that we do not tap into any portion of a company's profit; consumers pay directly to the merchant at time of service. We created our company to give business owners a chance to be able to create deals, and also have full control of these deals while keeping the full profit from each of the deals claimed.

We've basically taken out the negativity businesses part that businesses don't like about other deal sites. We've heard way too many horror stories about businesses operating at a loss because of running deals with other deal sites.

We launched our site, www.peekadso.com on June 22nd, 2013, only in the Miami/Fort Laurderdale areas for now. We will be extending our services to the entire country soon. We just wanted to have a limited release of our site so we could control the growth of our website. We've made a deal website where consumers can go to look for deals and businesses can create deals without losing out on their profit. Wish us luck! We're entering into the domain of some big players that have a whole lot more people backing them. Hopefully people will realize that although Peekadso is an underdog now, we have the best interest of businesses and consumers in mind.

  • 30 Signs That You Were Raised by Frugal Parents   13 years 1 week ago

I hang my clothes out to dry between April and November.

I use a small window air conditioner to cool just one room on really hot days instead of using my central A/C system to cool the entire house.

I don't park at meters. I park wherever there is free parking and walk to where I'm going.

I just had the collars turned on two of my old shirts. They're in great shape except the collars were a bit frayed.

  • 6 Things Every College Student Must Know About Private Student Loans   13 years 1 week ago

These ridiculous college tuition increases and crazy interest rate loans are really screwing over the current generation of folks. I just hope the whole bubble bursts before my kids need to go to college, because it is just depressing the number of folks that graduate that are drowning in debt. Good luck baroque grad!!

  • 10 Things You Didn’t Learn in College (but You Should Have)   13 years 1 week ago

These are pretty good tips. It's taken me > 10 years to realize that the degree is not the most important thing. It can help you get your foot in the door, but it really is all about you and how you work with others. That's something that is very hard to teach, but it easy to practice if you're focused on self-improvement.

  • Ask the Readers: What Was Your First Paying Job?   13 years 1 week ago

My first job like many others was working at a fast food place. They had no respect for the teenage workers. I quit after a short time and went to work for an apple packing plant where the pay and attitude was better.

  • Discover Bank Review: You Know the Card, but What About the Bank?   13 years 1 week ago

I havent done anything with Discover in years. I had a credit card with them years ago and really enjoyed the card and the service they offered. But I cut down to having just to cards and cut them out. If their banking service is anything let their credit card services were they should be in good shape. I am still a little on the fence about dealing with a bank without and brick and mortar places though.

I cleaned bathrooms for my parents for extra money beyond my allowance when I was a kid, and then I started babysitting. My first job according to the IRS was telemarketing for symphony subscriptions when I was a teenager.

  • 25 Reasons Why You Should Take a Walk   13 years 1 week ago

Brilliant post. As an avid dog lover, walking is one of my greatest pleasures, especially when by the sea. I seem to come alive when I combine the both.

In addition I agree that it's a lovely inexpensive and healthy way to unwind and take things into perspective. Especially when one has had a bad day or is feeling angry

  • Investment Allocation by Age: Birth to 10 Years Old   13 years 1 week ago

We have a 2 year old and a 4 year old. We have 529s for them, but keep the gift money and things readily available. And each of them have a few piggy banks, so when they get money they get used to dividing it up. We do the Dave Ramsey giving, saving, spending and add investing for a 4th. Being so young, we just want to teach them that money is for multiple things, including investing and giving to people in need.

  • Be on the Lookout for Credit Card Checkout Fees   13 years 2 weeks ago

What Beverly obviously doesn't know (amazingly) is that a handful of major banks own the U.S. (us) too.

Our financial laws, which were supposedly written by Congress, were actually written by banks. Those laws are so lax that they basically put banks almost out of the reach of justice and allow them to prey on us. Banks have "had us by the balls" for decades, but it really came to head in 2008 when they almost destroyed our entire economy overnight.

Since then, we haven't managed to get control of the beast because both Republican and Democratic politicians (but mostly Republicans) are OWNED by the banks.

  • Be on the Lookout for Credit Card Checkout Fees   13 years 2 weeks ago

I am always stunned at people's misguided anger at retailers over "passing on" the credit card fee directly to consumers. This writer, Beverly Harzog, (like others) is adding to that stupidity level with comments like "No freakin' way"...I'm not willing to pay the credit card fee.

As a consumer you are almost ALWAYS paying 2-3% more for your retail purchases IN THE FORM OF HIGHER RETAIL PRICES, whether or not you use a credit card for that purchase. And, that money, obviously, goes to the BANK not the retailer.

There is no fault here on the part of retailers if they begin to charge a higher price to those customers who CHOOSE to use a credit card rather than raising prices on their goods as inflation continues its upward climb. After all, why should the retailer (or the customer who pays cash) subsidize YOUR BANK'S EXORBITANT FEE with higher prices on products? And why should the retailer help your bank to HIDE it's exorbitant fee by rolling up the fee into the merchandise price?

I prefer they get those fees all out in the open so that the consumer can see it and own it and then decide whether they really want to bear the true cost of using their credit card. If the consumer is not happy with fee (and why would anyone be content to fork over what is essentially a 3% tax to the "banksters"), then they should elect politicians who are willing to reign in the bank’s extravagance. Ask yourself how much you would resent it and protest if your city or state or federal government tried to increase your taxes by 3%. How is it okay with you that banks get away with charging that much for merely processing an electronic transaction -- a transaction that costs pennies or less to process! It’s NOT okay!

Banks are having their way with us. Getting this fee out into the open forces the consumer to be AWARE of where her money is going and let’s her take charge of the situation (no pun intended). She has the CHOICE to either buy the item at the lower price by paying by cash or to buy the item at the higher price for the convenience of using my credit card. It's FAIR.

  • Ask the Readers: What Was Your First Paying Job?   13 years 2 weeks ago

First paying job was supervising the "games room" at a local Boys and Girls club. I was only 17 (pretty sure you're supposed to be 18 when given full supervision responsiblities) and our "games room" was basically an add-on to a building that we stuffed 50 kids ages 6-14 into (breaking multiple fire codes no doubt).

I learned a lot about how to manage a room and plan activities, skills that translate well as a classroom teacher. I also have the ability to a play a mean game of pool and can beat just about anyone in foosball. Those skills, however, haven't proved quite as useful with the exception of my college years.

  • Cheat Sheet: Retail Markup on Common Items   13 years 2 weeks ago

show me where you got 320% markup on new cars. It is closer to 8-10%. look at the invoice on a new car against the msrp and you'll see an average of only 8-10% mark up. people think the msrp is a rip off but those invoices are accessible if you look. people always want to negotiate on a car but how many of us ask to pay invoice on furniture or even ask to see the invoice? The same with clothes and other items that we are paying ridiculous mark ups on.

  • 6 Things Every College Student Must Know About Private Student Loans   13 years 2 weeks ago

You do not always need a co-signer, if you are employed part-time and have a decent credit score. Granted this normally limits it to older students, grad student or students in their last year but it can be done. And, to be honest, given the situation with federal federal loans, for graduate students, private loans may be the best.

  • 6 Things Every College Student Must Know About Private Student Loans   13 years 2 weeks ago

I am going to file this article under "Things I Wish I had Read Before College."

Now, I am 2 years out of graduating college (from a very expensive top 50 school), and even though I have a great job with a higher than average salary, more than 50% of my take home pay goes straight to my student loan payments. Because they are mostly private loans there is nothing I know of to reduce the payments on them.
