I am still in my 20s so I know the total amount of money I will need to have saved by the time I retire will be a lot different due to inflation than the number it is now. I am preparing for this by investing my money in a mutual fund as well as a retirement fund. Essentially I plan to just let the money sit for the next 40 years as I invest and put away more money. In a few years or so after I have gained enough financial knowledge, I will try to come up with a goal, but right now I have a plan worked out to stash away as much money as I can.
It's all about your expenses. You need 20x expenses to live in perpetuity. Get your annual expenses, multiply by 20, and that is your number. Nothing much hard to it!
I would add dogs to the list. I've fed my dogs a raw food diet all their lives, and they smell wonderful--as my sister said, "like a clean sweater." The only time they need a bath is if they chase a skunk or roll in a old deer carcass (both have happened). If they get muddy, I just rub them down with a wet towel.
I also generally wash my clothes about 1/3 less often as most people. I wear tops at least twice, pants several times, and sweaters many times, before washing. Obviously if things smell, they get washed, but if you have normal good hygiene, many clothes can go through multiple wearings. It makes your clothes last longer too, and that's economical.
And I would second the issue of hair-- my hair is much healthier if I only wash it every couple of days. I used to wash it daily. But it actually styles better with what my hair stylist refers to as 'a little weight from your scalp oils' on it.
My employer provides 2 years salary life insurance for free! I'm 23 with no dependents. Does it make still make sense to lock in a 30 year rate now with a third party?
Pimps are a major problem in Talent, Event, Domestic, Crew and even Creative Gigs. In the San Francisco area, these sections often contain posts looking for "models", or "dancers" which are sometimes easy to spot, but anytime you see any post for a need a female for an assistant for a busy executive, date to the opera, date for lunch, someone to serve drinks at a private party, etc. IT IS A PIMP. They are looking to find women who will go on dates for money. It's all about the social engineering. They then try and hook them into lunch for a presentation (the usual pitch). If you are in doubt, use a fake email address with a female name and respond asking for more information. I flag relentlessly (I have three different machines in three different subnets that I can remote into, but they are like cockroaches - they keep coming back...) If Craigslist would respond to complaints about this it would take a majority of them out, but craigslist doesn't do anything until the police or district attorneys make threats.
I personally love my old SUV, it's a 1995 Jeep Cherokee 2-Door, 2-Wheel Drive, 5-Speed Manual Transmission with 241,000 miles. I used to be that 7 or 8 year old that would be like, "Why don't we get rid of this junker and get something newer and more cool?" Deep down, I really did/do love it. When I was 13 I started to notice around my area that there were lots of Jeeps and there was a huge aftermarket for lift kits, big tires and all kinds of great modifications to make it just as cool as any new car on the road and if not, even better! By the time I was 15, I told my Mom I wanted the Jeep as my first vehicle. I thought about things rationally. Jeeps are reliable. They can be modified to be made better! They are one of the longest lasting vehicles in the United States. Mine was fully paid off and I had no car payment. Full Coverage Insurance was cheap on it! Needless to say, I am now 16 and roll around in my Jeep all the time and dare anyone to say anything to me about it. It has been through thick and think with me and my family and will keep it probably until I die!
