Are you really all that surprised by this?? Times are changing and the younger generations simply aren't aware of things that are no longer commonplace. I don't necessarily find it "sad"...things are constantly changing, but that's life.
Keep in contact via e-mail and Skype. E-mail is a convenient option when the other party is not available to talk. When you want to talk or see each other face to face then Skype is a nice alternative if you cannot meet up with the person.
Only in the USA would hanging washing on the line, or resoling your shoes be considered extreme! Woooooh! Imagine turning lights and appliances off when you leave the room! Even more shocking: PUT ON A SWEATER WHEN YOU'RE COLD. Shocking stuff.
I used LinkedIn (as other readers have posted); I think that is the "most professional" social network to keep your "personal space" so they're not snooping around your personal life (that is unless you have them on your FB etc).
Facebook and Skype has helped a lot in that department. I'm still a huge fan of snail mail. I love sending cards. Cards are inexpensive, stamps are inexpensive-ish, and it's a great way to show someone you care.
Our family lives all over, from Texas to Colorado to California to South Carolina and even Japan. We recently started using Skype to video chat with everyone, especially my brother, uncle, and grandmother. Skype is so wonderful.
Using Skype helps our daughter's grandparents stay in touch as they live half-way across the country. It also is great because they can see her on the video chat and watch her grow up even when we can't get together in person.
We stay in touch with text, calling and skype especially skype when my hubby is awake he uses his laptop and the wifi of the hotel saves a bundle
I have family far away from me so this would be great...I love to save money :)

You can email and leave messages on facebook. Costs only internet fees
I use e-mail, skype and face to face to keep in touch.
You save money by not using your phone.
I use FaceTime, it doesn't cost me any extra and it works for me and my friends.

So easy to lean on others' expertise or judgment, than to listen your own.

Normally we email but now just received a new computer that has Skype and all I have to do is figure out how to use it.
