  • Will the "Buy American" clause in the stimulus bill create or destroy jobs?   17 years 10 weeks ago

More of the left ideology which hasn't a clue when it comes to history.

As you point out, protectionism not only failed in the thirties, but caused the Great Depression to be deeper and more prolonged.

Same thing goes for raising taxes in a recession as is being attempted here in California. Heaping insult to injury. Why do the leftist scorn the taxpayer so?

Politicians talk about a trade deficit like it's a bad thing. It just means we're importing more than we're exporting. That's a great thing because people are getting better products or getting the same products at a better price than equivalent items made domestically. That means increased buying power for everyone.

Restricting trade (under the guise of "buying American") will restrict competition, which leads to inferior quality products at a higher price. Sure you saved Jim the factory worker's job in the short term, but now Jim has to save for six months to get that new widget he wants when he could have gotten it in three with free trade. You mention The Choice, which has some great examples; I highly recommend it as well.

I doubt that this clause will cause a global trade war, or that it will have much benefit, either. Since the US is a net importer from most of the non-exempt countries, the US has less to lose. For example, if China stopped all imports of US goods, it would have an effect on employment and gdp. If the US stopped all imports of goods from China, the Chinese economy would collapse within days. Also, most exports to China from the US are high-tech goods, notably machine tools and sophisticated computers, unavailable elsewhere; Chinese exports to the US are almost entirely commodity goods, which other countries could quickly provide, and which the US has the capacity to build in country. For one example: China cannot produce a laser-guided milling machine of sufficient tolerance to build critical aerospace components, and the few other countries that can would be unlikely to sell to them. The US, on the other hand, can produce clothing, footwear and mainstream electronics, or buy from other Asian countries. The US has such a large trade deficit that it is difficult to inflict damage on the US with trade restrictions that would not redound with more damage on the partner country. There seems to be no great harm to this clause, though I cannot see how it will provide more than negligible benefit to, for example, the steel industry. In the end, I think this is much ado about nothing.

Definitely a short sighted myopic view to take, impacting global trading partners will only lead to closing of various borders around the world (even tighter than they are today). This current economic malaise should be looked at as an opportunity, to redo what has not been done correctly and to make things better than they have been. I feel sorry for the USA, everyone else could/can adjust, but the USA will suffer the most.

  • 6 Options if You're Underwater on Your Mortgage   17 years 10 weeks ago

In any market like this, there are cases of "bad luck". However, for those who took out additional refinincing, equity loans etc. to finance a lifestyle that they couldn't afford - and now expect a government bailout. To hell with you!

Anyone with an ARM should have read the contract and known what the rate could go to. If your rate went up, and you can't afford it. To hell with you.

Those of us who bought houses in the boom market due to relocations, and continue to pay on those houses, bear the brunt of your dumb decisions and should not have to bail you out also.

  • Do Nigerian Scam Artists Catch more Flies with Threats of Detainment?   17 years 10 weeks ago

I worked for a woman who fell for a Nigerian Scam; She has been involved with the scam for at least 8 years. She has lost her business, may lose her home. She fell for the Nigerian as he told her he loved her and wanted to marry her. My estimation of money lost is about 1 million. (not including her business and home) She is a greedy person and is not likely to navigate away from the scam. She believes 100 percent that the money will make it's way to her eventually. The sad thing is is that her employees lost their jobs and she has money coming to her in a trust every year that she can live on. I was told on a daily basis of the scam and tried to "make her see the light". She deserves what she gets is all I can say. I think these people need help but she didn't think about her employees and what it was doing to them financially. She is an educated woman and comes from a family that has money. It is nothing but greed on her part. I hate to admit it but I am bitter and I hope she loses in the end and ends up penniless and begging, that may be the only thing that would stop her!

  • What can you do with $13 extra a week?   17 years 10 weeks ago

Not only is this blatantly false it has nothing to do with the extra payroll money average people will be seeing. An extra $50+ per month is nothing to sneeze at for the average household. People are constantly told to cut an expense like their phone or cable TV. Ironically, the cost of those cuts is about $50 a month. So that small amount of money matters. It matters more what you do with it. If you use it to do something that further improves your bottom line like putting it in savings or using it to save money on a required expense you just improved your situation two fold.

I want to see things that directly help regular people. The ultra rich don't need our help.

  • The Real Value of Forever Stamps   17 years 10 weeks ago

I haven't heard the rumor, but I feel it's akin to one I've heard for 30 years: "Social Security will be broke before you retire." So far, untrue, but many were panicked by it.

So what if the Forever Stamp rumor is true? How much difference would it make to the average stamp user? Not much, especially when many of us pay our bills on line. The main benefit of Forever Stamps is convenience, and this comes into play when the rates rise. I'm a believer in Forever Stamps and I think they'll be around . . . Forever!

When is there a change? If you felt inclined to write these observations then have you also a theory as to what the exception is? And what about this "stain or shine" language? Where's that coming from - is that documented anywhere else? Otherwise an interesting post.

This is a fantastic photo and I was wondering if you would allow me to use it in a student publication we are doing on saving money. It is coursework that will not be published but we need to ask for permission anyway.

    Many thanks

  • Placing Prepositions: Where you from? Where you at?   17 years 10 weeks ago

We've got one son who's a spendthrift, one who's a saver. The spenthrift is impatient, unfocused, and fun to be with. The saver is serious, makes priorities, and is generous. It has nothing to do with birth order, parentage, modeling or instruction with these two. Still it's an interesting study. It might be fun to see how the study works within large families. Another idea, were there any gender differences in the students' risk tolerance?

  • Placing Prepositions: Where you from? Where you at?   17 years 10 weeks ago

This is a very well written post. There is always a bigger picture within which we have to find our way. Unfortunately the bigger picture can really screw up individuals, even those individuals who have "done the right thing".

  • Wills: The Basics   17 years 10 weeks ago

My father wrote a letter(Holographic Will)to my mother, Jan. of 1968, stating that if anything happens to him, he would like her to make sure I got his belongings and to let me know it came from him. He had stated that he had moneys coming due to him and to see an attorney to take care of it. My father passed away that year in Nov. I was 6 years old at the time. My mother and father were divorced and my mother was remarried with children from her 2nd marriage at the time of my fathers death. In 1972-73 I found that letter, my mother was throwing it away with other papers that belonged to my father and his mother(my grandmother) Papers that could prove she had commited fraud. I was around the age of 10 when I found the papers. I didnt tell her that I had taken them out the trash(I have always heard, one mans trash is another mans treasure), and I am here to tell you that, thats the day, I found my treasure, but not knowing it untill years later. Then in 1999, for reasons(long story), my mother put the property that my father left and wanted me to have, in my half brothers name. I was so upset, I told my brother about the letter(will) that I had found years before, telling our mother that my father wanted me(his only child)to receive his property. My brother told me it was his land and he was going to sell it, that the letter I had didnt mean a thing. A family member told me I should talk to an attorney, and I did. That is when I found out that the letter is a Holographic Will and is legal in the states of Louisiana, where I live and in the state of Mississippi where the property is located. The attorney encouraged me to try and work it out with my mother and brother, out of the courts. Little to say, that it didnt work. I had to start a lawsuit, that was in 2003. During this time my mother and brother had stopped talking to me, and said they didnt want anything more to do with me because I was sueing them. Then in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina, I got in touch with my mother to tell her that she means more to me then a piece land. My brother asked me what do I want to do about the land, and I told him that I would like to start a family business on it, he said that was a good idea. I told them I would drop the lawsuit, if my name was put on the deed and we started a family storage business. My attorney got upset with me, telling me that I would regret dropping the lawsuit, at the time, I didnt believe him, I wanted my family back...Little to say, it is now 2009 and still no storage business. They have stood in my way, anyway possible. They just want to sell it, give me half. I dont want half, I have 3 daughters that I would like to leave the property to. My brother dosent have any children, and still lives home with our mother. I am not happy to say, that I had to get another attorney to find out where I stand at this point, but, I am hoping to have somewhat of a storage business started by this time next year...O.M.Goodness, sorry to have gone on and on...it feels good to think someone out here may be able to relate to what I have been dealing with for years now...

You control your destiny. I control my destiny. It says only 30% is controlled by genes, the other 70% is who you are.

@FLaAdoptee - If you're looking for someone to blame, take a look in the mirror. If you want someone thank, the man in the mirror will be there for that too. You have an advantage, you can't use your parents as an excuse, you only have yourself to blame.

I am a 46-yr-old who was adopted at birth and have no idea who my biological parents are beyond the bare basics [she was Jr College grad, he was law school student at UF dependent on his parents for tuition.]

As such, I have no one - good or bad - on which to model my behavior. No wonder most adoptees end up being considered wacko, bad seed, etc.

  • What can renters do if their landlords are in foreclosure?   17 years 11 weeks ago

Last night, my landlord came by to tell me she is filing bankruptcy and I am being named as a creditor because I have a lease. She said the guy who lives in the downstairs apartment will not get a notice because his lease is up and he rents month to month? She said I would be receiving some kind of notice taped to my door this next week and not to worry about it? I don't know what to expect. She has my security deposit and I don't want to make her mad because I need her as a reference for the next place I live. Who will I pay my rent to if I can stay? OR should I be looking for something new.

  • Placing Prepositions: Where you from? Where you at?   17 years 11 weeks ago

Great post. This is the number one reason I don't have a TV anymore. Being constantly inundated with commercial propaganda wears anyone down after time. Another nice side effect now is spending more time with real, living people, instead of fantasies. Thanks for the post!

  • What can you do with $13 extra a week?   17 years 11 weeks ago

It's a myth that the Bush tax rebates didn't work. They worked just fine. We were in a recession in 2000 and then when 9/11 happened the economy stumbled. It was a rebate, meaning, our tax money was given back. We had a booming economy for about 5 years; but bubbles burst. If you paid more taxes (the top 5% of earners pay most of our taxes, low income people pay nothing in taxes, in fact, they are given our tax money through EITC) you got more back. See how that works? That's how the myth of tax cuts for rich became a mantra. Then people started spending and investing again. What brought things to a halt was our government's constant interference in the housing market. Like the bad peanuts from one company, the toxic paper affected us all. Just like the FDA wasn't doing its inspection job, so our Congress wasn't doing its oversite job.

  • 6 Options if You're Underwater on Your Mortgage   17 years 11 weeks ago

I bought here in the Central Valley of CA. 2.5 years ago. I put down $100,000.00 cash 20% and financed 80% with a low fixed rate.

I did every thing right! I could afford my house but now due to the sagging electronics market my income is in the process of reducing by 75%. I owe $370,000.00 and current value of my house is around $200,000.00.

What are my options? I need to buy food pay child support and bills..

  • What can you do with $13 extra a week?   17 years 11 weeks ago

If it's such a waste, why not find somebody who will appreciate the additional $13 and give it to them. A dollar spent in the economy in any form is still a dollar and returns likewise.

  • What can you do with $13 extra a week?   17 years 11 weeks ago

Something simple and productive people could do with that extra $13 a week. Use it to buy sales and loss leaders at the grocery store.

I frequently see some really great deals on those off weeks where fewer people are buying groceries. I have started setting a bit of extra grocery money aside to stock up on those deals. This over all lowers your grocery bill. With two caveats. It has to be something you will actually eat and something you can store or eat before it goes bad.

Another option is to use that money to buy up those super deals that show up at the grocery store. $1 a pound turkey breast, older bananas for 10 cents a pound and things like that. I have really been able to stretch our food budget when I can jump on things like this. Both of these mentioned I bought about half a grocery cart of the item and either made things that could be frozen or froze the items for later use.

This is a strategy that doubles the value. That extra money was used to save you even more on a mandatory expense.

  • What can you do with $13 extra a week?   17 years 11 weeks ago

Groceries. Most of the food companies continue to have increased profits despite the recession due to price increases. Many items have increased 30-50% in last year, so even if further gouging slows down in 2009, $13 a week will easily disappear.
