Unfortunately, I think you miss one aspect in the analysis. When you spend all the money up front, you must also take into account the opportunity cost, e.g. the risk-free rate. This is precisely why you're experiencing the "doubling" of return. You also realized that half of the money is tied up on average, yet you did not account for this.

great article, although broadening the search can help, like the 1080 dpi screen tv isn't that expensive if you grab a front projector, I got mine for $250 and I love it. And I think ATM the top graphics card is also the best value(if you can afford it).

Alcohol is flammable. Alcohol vapors are even more so. The vapors will get you drunk, I have even heard that pure enough alcohol will absorb thru the skin. If you boil you mash, you risk a lot of extra vapor that could get you drunk and cause you to make bad decisions. Be careful.

  • How to Make Moonshine   17 years 15 weeks ago

It should come up to the evaporation point of alcohol and hold there until it is gone, then climb up to the boiling point of water around 210. Your goal is never to boil, just get close to it. Turn the heat down, if you are using wood, knock it down away from the kettle. If you are using electric elements, turn one off, if you are using 1 large one and no controls, then you are just way too big and need to build a column that can handle the water vapors and send them back down. If you don’t know what a still column is, Google it and select just the pictures to start with, the link I gave earlier has directions to build one. The most creative I’ve seen, was a column that came apart and fit in a Makita drill case for storage and hiding. Nice, very nice.

I have problems keeping the temp down around 173. My still wants to burn around 190-110 for vaporization. Is there a problem of getting the mash too hot, just not over the 112 for the water to vaporize? What are temps for dangerous mixes?

  • 6 Ways that Dieting and Budgeting are Exactly the Same   17 years 15 weeks ago

This is such a timely read for me! I just made the connection in my own life between my eating and my spending, and I'm looking forward to exploring that further. I've never been great at managing my weight OR my finances, but I feel hopeful for the first time in ages.

  • 6 Ways that Dieting and Budgeting are Exactly the Same   17 years 15 weeks ago

Thanks for your points.  To respond to your #2, it reminds me of some of the bigger problems that both eating irrationally and spending irrationally are indicitave of.  Craving glass, rocks, or copper pennies?  You probably have a nutritional deficiency.  Craving electronics way over your budget and stashing hundreds of designer purses you can't afford in a closet you will never open again?  Also a deficiency of sorts. (Shopping can be an addiction for many that has little to do with "needing" the items they purchase.)

Our psychological and emotional needs can come full circle with both shopping and eating habits.

    I appreciate your comments!

I can think of two really big ways that they are not the same.

    1) One big meal will not sink your weight-loss plan, but buying a car or house that you shouldn't have, even if you are otherwise frugal every day, just might sink the budget for good.

    2) Eating is a biological imperative. When you are hungry, your body creates hormones that have a physical effect on your brain and your judgement. You may feel that you desire the latest iPod in the same irrational way as you wanted that slice of pie, but it's really not the same thing.

  • 5 Personal Finance Tips You Don't Always Hear About   17 years 15 weeks ago

#5 bears repeating! Your health should take priority over everything else. Unfortunately, it's a challenge when you're surrounded by people who think sleep is optional and who think people who have time to exercise and eat right aren't working hard enough.

  • 5 Personal Finance Tips You Don't Always Hear About   17 years 15 weeks ago

I've seen that some extended warranties pay off. Something like a laptop if you do a lot of traveling may be a good candidate. I've known people who aren't very careful with their cell phone and have to buy a new smartphone a couple of times a year.

Some extended warranties cover these of damages and can be boon to some.

  • Root cause of the financial crisis   17 years 15 weeks ago

I'm sorry, I just commented, but then I read some more farther up. You people who say greed was the causing factor are simply wrong, I'm sorry. It was not greed that caused them to overlend to underqualified individuals. It was an act of congress called the Neighborhood Reinvestment Act (i've seen it called the COmmunity Reinvestment Act as well). This FORCED lenders to implement subprime mortgage loans with fluctuating interest rates, in turn forcing up home values because of the demand increase. Other living costs continued to increase, i.e. gas, milk, etc. and the housing bubble burst because people can't afford houses now (for example, me. A person with an excellent credit score but not enough income to even come close to paying for an APARTMENT!)

So now I've moved back in with my parents. :S

    Thanks yet again democrats.

And now they want to inundate the economy with more money to fund more irrelevant government programs that won't address the issue at all (condoms? really? That's going to help save our country from economic meltdown?) ... On a side note ... only 7 percent of obama's proposed bailout will even be SPENT THIS YEAR.

PUH LEASE, democrats. It was your action that got us into this mess, and now you're going to steep us further into it.

    Thanks.

I just want to say that I didnt vote democrat, so when our nation goes to pot, it wasnt my fault :) Thank you.

  • Root cause of the financial crisis   17 years 15 weeks ago

Well, that Fox may or may not have been correct about minorities buying homes. But what you come to is that poor were enabled to buy homes through a shady Neighborhood Reinvestment Act (thank you Democrats) that gave crazy, fluctuating interest rates as a way to provide incentives and ability to pay for the poor. This was a significant contributor to the downfall of our economy. That combined with house prices inflating over the years and voila, economic breakdown.

    Thanks again Democrats.

The sad thing is that people have been predicting this crisis for years now and not many people listened. At least we can take comfort in knowing that our governement will do everything they can to maintain their $1 trillion / year overseas empire, and continue giving billions in aid to foreign nations during this crisis. Yes, I am just a bit sarcastic about the whole thing.

  • Why Can't You Ever Make On-Time Payments?   17 years 15 weeks ago

Every payday I withdraw my 2 week 'allowance' from the bank. Then I put $27 worth of gas in the car (Toyota Echo so that will fill it). Then I go and buy 2 weeks worth of groceries (I've made a grocery list at lunchtime at work). When I go home I put $5 in the groceries can (in case I run out of milk or bread). The rest of the money is what I call DI "disposable income." It's for spending on anything I want. I don't even track it. It's there to be spent. Sometimes I spend it all, sometimes I don't.

This leaves the rest of my pay sitting in my bank account ready to be zapped out. Cable, rent, phone, car insurance is all ready to go. I only use my credit card for expenses that are going to be reimbursed by work (usually a massage or dentist visit) No checks, no missed payments, no worries. Oh and yes, savings/investments are zapped out by my employer. I never see that money on my pay so I never worry about it.

I don't make very much money so if I can do auto pay, anyone can.

Thank you for mentioning the judging. It can be very discouraging to those who are trying to cut back.

Your point in #4 about people judging or assuming things about you because their situations are different really ring true. Like you, I watch carefully what I eat because diabetes runs in my family, and I'm at risk for it, among other health conditions.

And the same goes for me wanting to budget so I can get out of debt. A girlfriend of mine gets upset when I don't like to go out all the time. I've tried explaining to her that I'm getting out of debt so I can get married (don't want to saddle the hubby with my debt!) but all she can see is that I make more money than she does.

  • My Small-Town Move That Ended The Job-Search Blues   17 years 15 weeks ago

Thanks for your comments and insights into small-town working/living. Finding the right job is a challenge, and though it may seem counterintuitive to look for a job in a small town (rather than a big one, where there it seems like there should be more openings) but it can be a great step for some. Adjusting to a new culture (in whatever city you're in) can be hard but pay dividends later. And the Internet has definitely opened up possibilities that didn't exist 25 years ago.

  • 6 Ways that Dieting and Budgeting are Exactly the Same   17 years 15 weeks ago

#5 hits home to me. I lost 75 lbs in high school by drinking water and eating three bowls of frosted flakes a day.

On the opposite of the spectrum, I sacrificed diet to save money in college. My roommate and I managed to live on $15 a week for our food while we tried to find jobs. MMM Totino's pizza!

  • Rethinking The Early Mortgage Payoff   17 years 15 weeks ago

Right now, I'm already having a difficult time paying off my mortgages. I don't see myself and my husband getting another one at least in the next six months. Uncertainty of these times surely kills me. I might as well fix my priorities before scouting for mortgages.

  • Rethinking The Early Mortgage Payoff   17 years 15 weeks ago

One thing is certain though: getting a mortgage 10 years ago is not as "secured" as getting one today (at least for now). Unless the economy recovers overnight, I think it's best to hold on your present savings. People can not afford to spend much these days. It's a wait-and-see game for now.

  • 5 Personal Finance Tips You Don't Always Hear About   17 years 15 weeks ago

It is amazing to think just how much money the stores and companies that sell extended warranties must make! It's basically like pure profit, because I would guess that for many of the ones that are sold, the item does not break during the warranty period, so it's just 100% profit right to them. I agree - they are not necessary and are very expensive.

  • 6 Options if You're Underwater on Your Mortgage   17 years 15 weeks ago

I took a small buyout (thinking that my firm was a "dead man walking") at the end of November 2008. Now I am in defcon-4 mode of cash conservation and expanding the job search every 2 weeks. Assuming that we will have to relocate with a ~$160K mortgage on a house with a market value of ~$110-120K we are reviewing these options now. I think it's a pretty good job round-up of options. For me, I think we are planning to rent our house via a management company, then just rent a house wherever we have to relocate.

Not fun, but I really don't think I could look at myself if I just walked away.
