  • The "one big lump" theory of your money   17 years 17 weeks ago

p: Your checking account contains money you will spend soon.
q: Soon you will spend money on X, Y, and Z.
r: The money in your checking account is for X, Y, and Z.

    p ^ q -> r

Seems like a fairly accurate model of reality to me...

This seems like the argument on joint vs. separate checking accounts for married couples to me. Look at it upside down, inside out or any other way you want, you still end up with your money in the same places.

It almost doesn't matter how much or how little yeast you use--because the yeast is going to grow.  When it's at its peak, it'll be doubling every 20 minutes or so, so using half as much yeast is only going to increase your total fermentation time by 20 minutes.

All you really need is enough yeast to overwhelm an wild yeasts (or bacteria) that might get in the wort.  Any size package of yeast will be plenty.  If there's more than one size, use the smallest.  If you can only buy yeast in bulk, use a teaspoon (5 ml) or thereabouts.

I saw this happen when the live action 101 Dalmations came out. People bought them as pets with no research and though they could just buy a dog feed it and do nothing more. Then as these dogs got older many of them became aggressive, the parents couldn't control the dogs and feared having them around their kids. You have to train a dog and socialize it. Some breeds need more than others.

Labs have to have a way to work off their energy or they will do things like chew the linoleum off your floor while you are not home.

If you insist on buying a purebred puppy get a contact from your local kennel club and only buy from someone who only breeds one breed and keeps the dogs at home.

  • Five Frugality Hacks Straight Out of the Great Depression   17 years 17 weeks ago

    Jim:

If you google your area and farmer's markets, it should bring up a huge list, complete with websites for each market. By looking through the market's webpage, it should be apparent if these are resale markets or true farmer's markets. Real farmer's markets generally have rules specifying the degree of "outside help" you can have in making the product, and the number of miles away from the market the product must have been grown/made.

This market in Houston, for example, requires everything be grown w/in a 200 mile radius of the market (http://farmersmarket.rice.edu/showvendorlist.aspx). This market in Austin states on the front page that vendors must grow 100% of what they sell (http://www.austinfarmersmarket.org/). Generally it's part of the application that you verify that you are really a farmer, etc. Some of these markets are also certified, which is another thing one can look for when verifying that it is a real farmer's market, as opposed to a reseller.

Our local farmers markets run a bit cheaper to way cheaper than our grocery stores but our grocery stores have the market cornered and jack their prices. We did have the faux farm stands in town but as word got around that they were just selling grocery store produce from southern states they left town. I see more produce traded informally these days. The last two summers people would bring extra into work free to take. People would leave free to take produce on the table in the lounge area of the locker room at the gym and people would post extra on Freecycle.

I am hoping to plant far more than I think we can use so we have more to process and save and to also trade with people or contribute to the give away.

  • How to get half-price dining from your local TV station.   17 years 17 weeks ago

This post prompted me to check my local news site, as they have a "thrifty thursday" where they post a half priced gift certificate.

None of my local stations participated in the site you mentioned, but with a little digging I discovered that my local station used a company out of Ohio called Neofill Web Services, and they claim to be the home of the half priced certificate scheme: http://www.neofill.com/

Digging a little deeper I see that they also have a site that will AGGREGATE local deals across media stations so you can see all the deals in a community without having to go station by station (at least of those who participate with them): http://www.halfoffdeals.com/

Their site has the same deals for my area (16509) as the local TV station did (yourerie.com).

One of the best ones on there is two $25 gift certificates to a local video game store.. $50 games for $25! Cool!

I was disappointed recently to find that Dollar Tree no longer carries small pans; I guess they're no longer able to price them at one dollar.

  • The Easiest Way to Save Money on Vacation   17 years 17 weeks ago

    Great post, thanks for sharing.

I'm often indirectly guilty of doing buying too many souvenirs - rarely for myself, but usually for my friends. If I don't purchase small tidbits for my friends during a trip, I often feel guilty.

However, I'm starting to wean myself off of this guilt, though - because I always end up overbuying and when I come home I'm stuck with 30 extra magnets that are never appreciated. What I find much handier are postcards - send them off to friends for a couple bucks... your friends love receiving them, and you don't have to be stuck carrying more items in your handbags.

I keep seeing save money by buying from a farmer's market. But the farmer's market around here have produce at the same price or more than the grocery store. Beware that some "farmers" at them are actually resale companies and not actually farmers.

Every year around Christmas time, I make it a point to go to Dollar Tree for stocking stuffers, etc. It's also a great place to purchase picture frames and kitchenware!

I find it interesting that many of the tips involve the cooperation of peoples, are we living in a cooperative society now? Given the reluctance of people to do simple things like car pool for work I wonder??

another commenter mentioned it, I must second that any of the dollar stores are the place to go for pregnancy tests AND, at some, ovulation predictor kits. That way you can get 2 or 3 (or 7 - really, who takes just one, regardless of the desired outcome?) at 1/15 the cost at your local drugstore or superstore.

I have found their can openers to be dangerous and difficult to use.

The one I bought required extreme effort to actually open a can, inflicting damage on both (leaving bent cans and often jagged metal edges exposed) the can and my body.

After a couple months of tortuous use, the thing broke apart and I was glad to be rid of it.

The $1.97 can opener from Walmart has worked flawlessly for me ever since.

I am the bad guy in the family, you know the one that said "I won't have a big dog in our house because I know in spite of the boys' admirable intentions, I'll be left to housebreak, walk, feed and groom it". So we got gerbils. Taking care of them (and their needs are quite minimal, just playing with them mostly) put the kabosh on a bigger animal.

Often there is nothing but junk in the book aisle, but I have scored some excellent hardcover finds.

I also love their kitchen timers. Helps me stay on track and not spend the whole day at the keyboard!

The right dog for one person/family may be totally wrong for another. Labs are a very popular breed, but are not right for every family - which is true of EVERY breed. Research the qualities of the breed first so you know what to expect. Just because a breed is "cute" does not mean it is something you'll want to live with.

Mixed breed dogs are fine too, although you may not know what you're going to get in terms of behavior. Be wary of adopting an older puppy or dog that is shy or fearful, unless you have a lot of skill, time and patience as it can be nearly impossible to overcome bad early experiences.

That is not a popular to admit, but early socialization is essential to the healthy development of a dog's personality. Some dogs are resilient and will recover from a rough start, but other never do. I've seen it many times and I'm watching my neighbor deal with this now in a puppy adopted from a shelter at 8 months of age.

A breed club rescue is less risky, but not all breeds have young dogs available for rescue. If you choose a less popular breed you're less likely to find a young rescue dog. If you're willing to take an older dog you'll find more choices.

If you decide you HAVE TO have a specific breed then (you're wrong, but) you can find a breed rescue group and adopt a homeless animal through them. Just please, don't buy one.
