  • What will you do when gas drops below $1.50 a gallon?   17 years 30 weeks ago

I can't believe I just filled my tank with $23 for 14.64 gallons. Compared to 3 months ago where I was paying $55. Seems like a dream, unfortunately for my frugal living status, i'm now driving more, longer, further, higher speeds.. (no more 55-60) i'm back on the fast lane! AHHH!!!

    Thanks so much!

  • Do we really need help with getting more debt?   17 years 30 weeks ago

I have to wonder if all these bailouts for banks are the current philosophy. There's heavy opposition to loaning money to companies like GM that make actual products, but there's trillions of dollars available for companies that create financial products that put us in debt. What is up with that?

  • Do You Have Your TV Converter Box Yet?   17 years 30 weeks ago

I subscribe to cable TV, but I don't use a box because my televion is cable ready. Last month I received a notice from my cable company saying that some stations were going to be moved to different channels, e.g. the station that used to appear on channel thirty-three would now be appearing on channel three-hundred-thirty-three. Of course I can't get channel three-hundred-thirty-three on my TV without the converter box.
If you have cable, but you don't use a box, you might need one sooner than you think.

  • Is your country corrupt?   17 years 30 weeks ago

Corruption in America is when my husband's Aunt was hit by a wealthy Texas socialite's daughter, suffered whiplash and had to wear a neck brace to court, and the judge dismissed the case because it could hurt the girl's Ivy league college chances, and the Aunt in question had to basically swallow the bills.

Corruption in America is when the cops in a small town in Missouri will constantly harass certain drug dealers in town (though I don't agree with doing drugs, this is still a point), yet when two of their own are caught in a "compromising position" while on the clock and in uniform (and one is drunk, to boot) in a park they both had to DRIVE to (DWI), the most that they get is one is fired, and the other gets a small note on her service record. The male in question then went on (with good recommendation) to another police force in the area, while the woman is still (to the best of my knowledge) on the force.

Corruption in America is when the son of the high school principal gets together with 3 of his Varsity Basketball buddies and STEALS THE TENNIS SHOES of the opposing team from their locker room, and through mere apology and return of said shoes, can go on being on the Varsity team, suffering nothing from police or suspension from school.

Corruption in America is when you are of a minority religion in the military (and I'd hardly call being Catholic - which I was at the time - a minority!), and EVERYONE harasses you for not being of the majority religion, attending the services that the majority do, or even reading books or watching movies that aren't considered good. (i.e. The DaVinci Code comes to mind first) The drill sergeants openly berated those of Pagan beliefs, the Protestant chaplain openly harassed the Catholics about not attending his service (or when we DID, about how we didn't immediately dance in the aisles), Buddhists didn't even TALK about their religion (unless they knew you wouldn't persecute them), and Atheists had to be PERFECT at everything for fear of being taken to task and possibly reprimanded, or skipped over for promotions. And trust me, though I'm out now, no matter what they say, it's NOT getting better!

And finally, corruption comes in smaller cases as well: when you don't do what's socially accepted. I am a stay at home mom. I LIKE to do what I'm doing. And I have no problems with those who work and put their kids in daycare/pre-school/what have you. And yet, when you go to the DMV, or to get a house loan, or even talking with (some) women who DO work, you're given the "Jeez, you're so lazy!" look, and then, in certain cases (like, the house loan, for instance) they won't even consider you because you don't have an income (though the fact that what income you MIGHT have would all go to daycare for the child isn't taken into consideration then!). If you're overweight in America (even though they now say that rates of obesity are climbing), people will treat you differently, refuse you a job, give you bad service, demean you - and no one holds them to task. Or if you're older and want to work - you're more likely (from what I've seen) to be laid off, even if you know more than the CEO about what you're doing, and never went to college!

So I don't think that corruption of a country only comes in monetary form, though that is the widely accepted definition. I have to agree with Jim here (#19). Corruption also occurs in the thoughts and actions, even when money isn't a factor, BECAUSE of people placed in power positions. These are all cases I've either personally seen, or personally experienced, and that leads to the belief that there are MANY more, and many more varied, cases. Would I leave America? No, of course not, for all her faults, I LOVE the bonuses. The short time I was in the Military (6 yrs Guard, 2 reserve) was BECAUSE I love the idea of America. I don't think passing new laws will change the attitudes of Americans, but I DO think that we have to speak out against it when we can. And while I PERSONALLY think that the Capitalistic system we have lead to being, in it's nature, flawed and power-hungry, I don't have a viable alternative that would NOT lend itself to those who seek power.

P.S. Sorry about the length *grin*

  • Look Waste in the Face (and Save More than Money)   17 years 30 weeks ago

You might want to try turning an electric space heater on to heat the bathroom only (turn it off and unplug it before you actually start the shower) is cost- and resource-effective if it makes the difference between taking a 5 minute shower and taking a 1 minute shower. That's what I do in the winter, when my house is around 52 Fahrenheit in the winter when I wake up.

  • Look Waste in the Face (and Save More than Money)   17 years 30 weeks ago

When my hot water heater went out, I put in a tankless model. I LOVE it. My gas bill went down and I have plenty of hot water. We had these overseas but I hadn't seen them in the states until ten or fifteen years ago.
This is not exactly a utility but I save money with a pay-as-you-go cell phone. There's no babble when you pay by the minute.

  • Can You Afford to Have a Baby?   17 years 30 weeks ago

I thought of all these things before having my kids and then realized that I didn't have the sort of jobs or lifestyle that this sort of planning required. But I was 33 and wanting children so I did it anyway.

Having children requires sacrifice. Period. Some sacrifices you don't notice because you aren't as interested in them anymore: the restaurants, the bars, the endless entertainment, and disposable income. Some you do. I wanted to be a stay at home mother, I couldn't do it in my city of choice independently, so I moved. We live far from many friends and family and culturally significant centers. But we have each other, my kids have fresh air, and we have a modest mostly self-sustained lifestyle (grandma lives three miles away).

Don't get bogged down in lists. Kids of smart parents will have many opportunities for learning and higher education by virtue of the values instilled. You can be in the crappiest school in the crappiest district and still excell.

Just do what's in your heart.

  • Chinese Money Habits - How My Culture Influences My Attitudes Toward Money   17 years 30 weeks ago

I am married to a woman whose parents are filipino immigrants to the United States. After reading about the Chinese values on money, I admire and value the emphasis that the Chinese on place on saving and living within means.

My in-laws are the polar opposite of what the author talks about. They like to live beyond their means, throw parties, and ask their relatives to bail them out as a first option instead of finding ways to cut cost and live within their means.

Recently, my father-in-law asked me to buy a plane ticket for his brother-in-law to come to America and spend the Holidays with the family. Instead of saving up money a little bit at a time over the last year, he called everyone he knew and begged for money 2 weeks before the holiday season started. Needless to say, I told him no.

My inlaws are friendly, fun-loving people, but they could learn from the Chinese when it comes to money management.

  • 4 Meals You Can Make With Thanksgiving Leftovers   17 years 30 weeks ago

If you have leftover mashed potatoes and turkey, and some vegetables, you can make a turkey version of a shepherd's pie. Or turkey pot pie, if you were smart enough to make an extra pie crust or two. Pot pies especially freeze very well, and the single-serving ones are very popular around here.

I usually par-bake a bottom crust (or line a casserole dish with buttered mashed potatoes and cook until lightly browned), then fill it with diced meat, leftover gravy or a basic white sauce, and whatever vegetables, onions, herbs, etc. I have around, add a top crust, and freeze. Suppose there's no reason you couldn't just cook it right then, if you weren't sick of turkey yet.

  • 5 Perfectly Respectable Uses for Instant Mashed Potatoes   17 years 30 weeks ago

I was reading about adding sweetened condensed milk to instant mashed potatoes, and I think maybe it should be evaporated milk instead. I checked the link to Maggie's page, and I think she means evaporated milk with her recipes, too. Just a head's up. Thanks for your great ideas!

  • Root cause of the financial crisis   17 years 30 weeks ago

Someone recently asked about our track record with respect to the market crisis. Here, from 2003 and 2006, are a few of our comments:

SEC Comments. Page 6: "Envy, hatred, and greed have flourished in certain capital market institutions, propelling ethical standards of behavior downward. Without meaningful reform, there is a small (but significant and growing) risk that our economic system will simply cease functioning."

    http://www.sec.gov/rules/proposed/s71903/wmccir122203.pdf December 22, 2003.

    and:

SEC Comments. Page 2: "Together these practices threaten the integrity of securities markets. Individuals and market institutions with the power to safeguard the system, including investment analysts and rating agencies, have been compromised. Few efficient, effective and just safeguards are in place. Statistical models created by the firm show the probability of system-wide market failure has increased over the past eight years.

Investors and the public are at risk."
