I did my own taxes, using TaxAct. Way less expensive than TurboTax and it gave me the same results. (But then, my returns really aren't that complicated.)
I saved my Christmas gift cards (from Amazon no less!) to buy H&R Block's software. I filed my federal for free using it, and it was super simple. Illinois let me file through their website for free as well, so I have filed and received my refunds already!
Yes, I file taxes for myself and I use a free file through the IRS website. I also do taxes for my niece the same free file through the IRS website. This is for both State and Federal taxes. I prepare taxes for father through Quicken and submit his info to an accountant for filing cause he has rental properties. I find the on-line web links at the IRS site work very well.
Absolutely not. We moved to a new state, sold a house, and my husband is now considered self-employed. That's a little too complicated for me to be comfortable taking responsibility, so we enlisted professionals. It's already totally worth it, in my book!!

I have a Mtg. that is unique in that the Mortgage balance grows by a predetermined rate over the life of the Mortgage and the interest rate can vary as well. I can not seem to find anyone to run a Amortization schedule over the next 7 years when there is a call on the Mortgage.

My husband and I are still trying to decide if we should hire someone to do our taxes this year, because we bought a house last year. Usually are taxes are EZ.
i made some, with alittle twist. just use vanailla and sweet almond oil, and add alittle more baking soda. 3 parts baking soda,1 part cornstarch, 1/2 part sweet almond oil, 3/4 part vanilla. at the end resauld should be a sort of solid beacause of the extra powder, tomhelp with sweat. idk if u have 2 do this but i microwaved it twice 4 5 seconds. u do it once, let it cool, and do it again, then u put it in a jar, and sprinkle nsome baking soda on it -oils "float" to top although it doesnt under your arm because you put it on thin- nice recipe, nice website

I'm sorry but I have to agree with a number of comments on here - $17k is A LOT of money! The fact that she doesn't pay for accommodation (and sometimes food) makes the number even more ridiculous. It suggests people who don't want to couch surf or work their way around the world need $1000's more than $17k to do it. This is clearly NOT the case. I've looked at her figures and it might as well have been Paris Hiltons costs. Other than that great blog :-)
Great point. I do think that avoiding brand-name products as much as possible saves a lot, but I forgot to mention stores that specialize in that. I shopped at Aldi in college (I no longer have one nearby) and the price of things like cereal there is amazing!
Excellent post. I love to read posts like these because there is so much negativity in the world and this cuts right through it. I agree that positive self talk is a major first step in solving a problem because it's important not to get into a negative downwards spiral. Most problems are solvable!

I am doing my own taxes . . .I figure by the time I get all the paperwork together and put it in a form that will make it easy for an accountant . . .I've done the hard work. It may be that I am being incredibly foolish doing my own taxes - especially not being in the "know" of all the principles governing a flawless tax return. My hope is that I am serving my family better by doing the work myself and saving the money I would be spending. "We the people" should be able to do returns ourselves if it is required for our government to serve us.
Sometimes the best way to solve your problem (depending on what it is) is to accept it ie- not having a problem with the problem. Sometimes you can't make a difference so you just need to move on with your life

Until now I've understood that as a joke about procrastination, but maybe it was advice about finding inspiration. Plus, even if his problem at the typewriter isn't solved by scrubbing the toilet, at least the toilet is clean!
Social Security is my only income so I won't file taxes this year. During my working years I always did my own. It's a fairly simple process and saves tons of money.

For me, I find the key to addressing any problem, obstacle, or a big goal is action - taking small steps constantly forward towards addressing the issue. The faster I can start making progress on the issue and seeing myself moving forward the better I feel about the problem at hand. I use this for everything from huge life goals to overcoming challenges in my marriage. I just always feel better knowing I'm taking action.
Yes! I already e-filed and received my refund. My federal taxes weren't complicated and I easily did them online.
State taxes are another story b/c I am in a domestic partnership, so while the federal gov't doesn't recognize my relationship, my state does, so I have to file jointly on state taxes. And that means my partner and I first have to fill out a fake joint federal form for my state. Its complicated and a pain, but we will do it on our own.

Nope, never do them myself. Not only are mine complicated this year, but my mother is a CPA and she lovingly does them for me for free.
