Great tips! Scarves, belts, and hats are a must for me to update my wardrobe. I would also like to try dyeing and upcycling shirts, pants, and shorts. I have seen some blogs that show step-by-step procedure how to do them but I have not really given it a try.
I really like this article. It helps us put it all in perspective. While we may freak out when the market is going down and CNBC is running shows saying it is the end of the world we need to realize it isn't the first time the markets have gone down or crashed. But if you look at the longer term trend in your figures it shows they eventually will make money. I guess the lesson is be ready to hold on to those stocks for the long run...but it is better if you have friends around when the sky is falling.
I tend to give my lady friends and my mom gifts that they wouldn't give themselves: spa days, new makeup brushes, a fancy wine. It doesn't have to be pricy- just something that seems like a treat & with lots of thought.
Personally, I like earrings. They don't have to be expensive, but I like to have a variety to choose from. Plus, they don't take up much space in my small house.
I usually look for things that my wife will usually not do for herself, like a massage or spa treatment. Gift cards for things like coffee are always good too.
Great list of tips! Every year or two my friends and I get together for a "swap". Its one of the best ways for all of us to get new things, get rid of stuff thats cluttering our closet, and not spend a dime. There are also SO many websites out there for DIY ways to up-cycle clothes and make old items into completely different and new pieces to wear.
Buying most of these things at drug stores is definitely the cheaper option, especially with weekly coupons from circulars. Although I do agree that you can get SO much more fresh veggies and fruit at a farmers market for a lower price, theres no packaged sliced cheese that compares to deli slices.
First let me say that I wanted to start this business but after reading all these Horror stories it has me worried.. My in laws ran a awesome snow cone stand in East Texas and made more money on frozen water then I ever saw, But he always gave back to the community, he sponsored little league teams, girl scouts, boy scouts , bowling teams and one that asked him, ( cost=HUNDREDS OF DOLLAR ) he would loan out his stand for fundraising and give 50% of all profits to the organization.. He would go to the local schools elementary and high school and give out THOUSANDS of free product coupons .. He did all of this because he knew that he was making good money and wanted to share. The customers all knew that he could be counted on and they happily bought from him.. The other thing that bothers me is people will go out to dinner and happily spend 100 dollars on dinner and drinks and never think twice.. They go to movies buy ticket 10-12 bucks EACH then pop corn and pop for 20 dollars and never complain. And that’s robbing right there in their neighbor hoods… The they go bowling, shop at the mall and eat mall food. EVERYONE knows mall food is way more because we have to pay rent. Utilities etc.. and the lines wrap around the store and no one says a THING about that.. But everyone complains when a fair or carnival comes along once a year and everyone also knows you are going to drop a 100 bucks easily.. I know each year that my family and I will buy those yummy fries, those sweet elephant ears with dripping toppings, sicky sweet drinks and enough cotton candy to hurl and I will happily do it.. I will over pay for anything on a stick and be glad I did.. At the end of the day I will leave the fair tired, dirty and full and even tho broke. I will start looking forward to next year.. everyone does it and everyone has memories from those days.. we are buying memories my friends..stop crying about the cost of everything because you could be dying of cancer and would give ANYTHING to be able to go to one more fair and spend 4 dollars for a bottle of water. After a loved one passes away you would beg for another over priced hamburger to share with them.. Its only money .. you will always spend it. Think about it…
That's funny, just a couple of weeks ago my wife and I went out to a nice place and she had a dress that she was sort of 'eh' about. She put on a scarf and it instantly changed everything about how she felt about it.
This is not entirely true. You have to price compare. The warehouse clubs (at least Sam's Club) do have their own generic brand of items and those are good deals. If you are buying brand name items at the grocery store anyway, most of the time that same brand name item will be cheaper at a warehouse club. We get FANTASTIC deals on produce (cherry tomatoes, spring mix, etc) at Sam's Club and that alone is worth our membership. The produce is not brand specific (I don't look for brands on produce at either the warehouse club or the grocery store) so that is one example of a better price. That and the fact that I find it very hard to get good deals on produce at a regular grocery store without buying about to expire items (I find it hard to get coupons on produce as well).
The best gift would be a personal care treat - facial or manicure, massage or pedicure. And if money is tight, well, a home made card promising Grandma a back rub or a foot massage would be heavenly. Many women are in the caregiver role - taking care of spouse, grandchildren and helping their adult children. They put others first so a little self nurturing is apprciated.
When asked by family what I'd like, I've always told them that they can't go wrong with jewelry. I guess a gift card to a clothing store would be nice as well. "Traditional gifts" that I DON'T like to receive are: perfume (I have my own perfumes which are my taste and last for several months a bottle), makeup or bath items (you have your favorite products and brands and don't like to switch from those, especially if you have sensitive skin), and candles (similar to perfume, I have so many which are my own taste and will last me forever).
I love that you included sewing as an option! I love to encourage people to learn more about sewing and to use their machines - it is possible to repair/upcycle many clothes as well as opening up a great avenue of creativity. Thanks for the great post!
I was also going to comment on the cosmetics tip. I have compared prices between the pharmacies and Wal-Mart / Target and W-M/Target are MUCH cheaper (in the US).
Very true of the signs that a pink slip is coming, can't believe someone was paying more attention to grammar rather than the true content of the article! Lol
both of your posts on this topic appear to be related to your feeling as though your guests are staying with you to save money on a hotel and you are doing them a favor by allowing them to stay in your home. A guest is a person who is invited. This should be because you want them in your home. Otherwise, they are a visitor. This article is about welcomed guests, not visitors who are looking to use your home as a place to stay.
Someone has stolen my debit card information and has been using it for online purchases. This card was used primarily for bill pay and online prchases. My brother recommended that I stop using my debit card online and suggested that I buy amazon or itune gift cards instead. Which would be more advantageous - A prepaid credit card or amazon/itune gift cards? Thank you in advance for your insight.
I think a lot depends on the woman. I'd love a day at the spa or if my family planned a special activity to do together. However, I know people who would probably balk at someone spending their money to give them a day at the salon. And I know people who would want alone time as a gift.

Most women just want something that they will like and use, and know that the person put some effort into trying to get them something just for them.
I love just getting a break from cooking, cleaning, etc. That's the greatest gift! And a massage would be nice, too.
best gift is something handmade (dinner, a card drawn in markers/crayons/etc, etc) it comes from the heart and it takes time to make

I like you on facebook
I think every woman is different, but I personally like flowers and something romantic like personalized photo frame.

I LOVE upcycling but I think sometimes a pro tailor can help save things too!

Hi Paul
Excellent article!

Something you know the person would enjoy and wouldn't purchase for on their own or something that creates a memory.
