=) I just sold an old T-Shirt on eBay this morning! I've bought plenty of stuff, too, in the past - anything from video games to a rain barrel.

  • Defining What Financial Success Means to You   13 years 50 weeks ago

There is a strong possibility that your definition of financial success, and the priorities of how you spend your time and money will change as your life stage, family, and worldview changes.

  • How to Make Moonshine   13 years 50 weeks ago

    Guest,

17 lbs of sugar and 5 gallons of water should bring you to 24% alcohol. That is high, even for Turbo. Did you taste the wash to see if it was partially sweet? My guess is the sugar is giving is some nutrients and then running out before the sugar itself can be eaten. They call it "48 Hour" because it should be just about maxed out in 48 hours. The yeast should be dying by then. Try this, but be careful, it will bubble over with activity. Mix in a can of tomato paste. It has added nutrients that you cannot get from pure water.

Something to take into consideration. The higher you get in %, the more off flavours you will pick up. Not to mention, the longer you sit on the trubs, the more flavours you pick up from the dead yeast. Keep it as short as you dare.

yes, i love to use ebay. Gets rid of all the chotkes from my dysfunctional family of origin. And like Amy Sedaris, I find I love the monetary transaction even if it is only enough quarters to do your laundry.

  • 22 Reasons to Stop Drinking Soda   13 years 50 weeks ago

This is one of the saddest most depressing things I have read in a long time. I have a bad soda habit but after reading this, I can't really see myself drinking it. I crave it and I love the taste and carbonation, I am going to miss it but not that bad to offset this horrifying evidence.

  • A Consumerist Editor Talks About How to Tackle Inept Customer Service   13 years 50 weeks ago

Since you mentioned Comcast repeatedly in the article and I was just reading a letter of extreme frustration about them over at So Over Debt, I have no choice but to post the link http://www.sooverdebt.com/unsent-letters-comcast-sucks-edition/ for all to see and read. It's a horrible thing to pay money for service and not be able to count on it or have any way of disputing when that service is not provided. Companies just want to make money these days and "we" are o longer important.

  • Frugal Fourth of July Party Ideas   13 years 50 weeks ago

Our neighborhood (in Chicago) has an Old Fashioned Fourth celebration, including a parade where anyone can march (lots of kids decorate their bikes and trikes and join the parade). Afterwards, there's a fair in the local park with old fashioned games like ring toss and watermelon seed spitting contests. A local band plays patriotic music by request. The elementary school sells hot dogs as a fundraiser, and many families bring a picnic. It's festive, frugal, and a great time for all ages. Other communities could replicate our model.

  • Armor Etch can be a cheap fix for your scratched eyeglasses   13 years 50 weeks ago

Worked like a charm. First, I removed the lenses from frames. Then used a Q-Tip to apply armor etc on both sides. I just dabbed it on, did not brush it on, until it was covered on both sides. Waited for 10 minutes, and then rinsed with warm water (but in a plastic pail, not the sink). My progressive prescription lenses cost around $400, and I could barely see through them from the scratched and damaged glare and scratch coating. I'll never get another pair of glasses with those coatings. Complete waste of money

I agree with your method of contacting higher ups when something is not resolved. We tried to cash in inherited mutual funds belonging to our mom, so she could use the cash for nursing home services. We found some of the investments were so old they involved physical paper certificates. We didn't have them. No one knew how to resolve the problem as the young customer service people had never even seen a physical certificate. I finally spoke to a secretary who had been there many years. She tried to help us but the current paperwork did not apply. I contacted the board president. He had a very dear older man work with me through the process. We were able to get the cash, and help Mom out in a timely way. The company was Vanguard.

  • A Consumerist Editor Talks About How to Tackle Inept Customer Service   13 years 50 weeks ago

"CM: We polled our readers informally a year ago to find out which industry had the worst customer service, and cable and telecom had the absolute worst. That's because there's little or no competition; with cable, for example, customers have no decision to make regarding the the cable provider they get, so there's no vested interest for the companies to improve customer service."

OMG, this is so true...I'm fired up just thinking about it!!! We recently had another terrible experience with a cable company, and I just want to shout from the rooftops about how bad it was. (I guess I did by posting about it at our blog here http://wp.me/p2sJ0c-2H. Sorry for the blatant self-promotion.)

Why is it that there is no competition for cable companies? It seems to me that would in some way be a violation of antitrust laws. Nothing frustrates me more than dealing with these incompetent, rude, lazy companies. Along with the outrageous prices they charge for dozens of channels that nobody watches, their utter lack of customer service has caused me to get rid of my cable tv subscription. Once I got off the juice, I liked it, and I'll never have cable again.

  • Beat the claw machine, save your sanity.   13 years 50 weeks ago

There is a voltage meter in the lower cabinet (locked) which controls the grip strength of the claw. The person who collects the money out of the machine usually tries to keep it so you spend about $8.50 per toy. If the operator wants to make more money, they simply turn down the voltage, thus reducing the claw's gripping strength.

  • 10 Things I Just Won’t Do to Save Money   13 years 50 weeks ago

Wow, it's like the author and I are leading parallel frugal lives...

...except for maybe the last one, "I won't Underuse My A/C and Heating." I live in SoCal, and I've gone entire YEARS without using A/C or Heat (in one apartment, I blew out the pilot light on the heater the day I moved in and never lit it again). Admittedly, I live in a temperate climate...

...but it also became something of a game to me to see how long I could go without climate control of any kind.

This was years ago, and I've gotten less "frugal" (older?) about the whole thing. Besides, it probably didn't save me that much money.

Still, it was a weird kind of frugal fun to play Urban Survivorman!

This is why the Red Sox need a bigger stadium. No deals whatsoever. Corporate buys most of the good seats which leaves obstructive view, SRO or the bleachers. They are more interested in keeping their home sold out record.

  • But I Don't Want To! Secrets to Self-Motivation   13 years 50 weeks ago

Absolutely - my old gym had one of those electronic rowing machines where you race the computer in a CGI boat on the lake. I started out doing it because it was kind of mentally cleansing... I could just focus on the boat and row away.

But I realized that the more I did it, the more I looked forward to doing it again and I actually missed it when I couldn't make my regular workout.

Ironic isn't it, that the things we dread can so easily become habits we love :)

  • But I Don't Want To! Secrets to Self-Motivation   13 years 50 weeks ago

Van - I love the idea of being your own hero! So much so, that I think that should be my next blog post :)

So, let's brainstorm Wisebread readers - what traits and skills do you think are an absolute must to be your own hero? I'm adding courage to the list... what else?

  • But I Don't Want To! Secrets to Self-Motivation   13 years 51 weeks ago

I totally agree Drew - sometimes we just work ourselves into a frenzy about something and then when we finally dig in and do it, we think "oh... okay, that wasn't so bad after all"... That reminds me of the definition of courage - it's not being fearless... it's feeling the fear and doing the "thing" anyway. :)

  • Which Online Services Are Worth Paying For?   13 years 51 weeks ago

Spotify used to be a favourite of my colleagues and I, as it was a free radio where you could choose your own songs. However since they put in a limit on the number of times you can listen to a certain song, I have switched to the paid version and it really is excellent. If you are an avid listener then it is definitely worth the money, otherwise stick with iTunes.

  • How (and Why) to Buy Life Insurance   13 years 51 weeks ago

There are other reason to buy life insurance as well. If you have family that you want to take care of in the future (it can be your parents or a sibling who needs special care). Another good reason is to insure your insurability. There are people out there who are in there 30s who are uninsurable. So insuring your insurability is very real. You will almost never be healthier now than later (at least according to the underwriters).

I agree that you need a financial planner or insurance broker to help you find a good policy. However, buying the cheapest insurance is not the greatest idea. There's a reason why the insurance product you are buying is cheaper than the others.

My recommendation is to make sure that the company insuring your life has strong financial ratings from the key rating agencies. A lot of the weaker financial companies may not be able to pay your claim if there is a natural disaster, a stock market crash, a drastic decline in interest rates or a flu epidemic. Some insurance companies claim to be AAA rated, but that's only from one rating agency, so watch out for that pitfall.
