About 6 years ago we moved to the beach so we live at our favorite vacation spot. The only problem with living at the beach is that you take it for granted and daily life gets int the way. This summer, I plan on weekly trip to the beach but I know that that it is unrealistic to make it every week with all the summer Church activities that are planned.

We are going away to Montreal for our anniversary trip (sans child) and separately, we are going to Sesame Place (for the child). We've already paid for the accommodation, plane tickets from our 2010 tax return, and saving little by little. For the Sesame Place trip, we used tax return from 2011 year.

My wife and I took an early vacation (in order to save on airfare) to visit friends in Amsterdam, so we may be done for the year. Although, we're hoping to get out to California to visit friends and family, it may prove a bit challenging, in terms of staying under budget. Let's hope for reduced airfare sometime soon...!

I don't know if it's exactly a vacation, but I'm due to give birth in two weeks! My mom is driving up when the baby is born, so my husband will be taking his vacation days before she arrives and after she leaves.

Why go on vacation when everyone else does and it is more expensive? Nope, we'll do a few "staycation" days here and there during the summer, but we're going on vacation when everyone else is in school! Disney World in late November/early December is awesome!

  • 3 Life Lessons I've Learned Since Becoming a Parent   13 years 48 weeks ago

Wonderful post - thank you! My daughter is 15 months and I experienced much of what you describe in this article - doing things I always said I wouldn't and suffering from false guilt. Motherhood has been the most rewarding, but challenging transition I ever made. It's somewhat comforting to know I'm not the only one who feels inadequate as a mother some days. Your words in the last paragraph are inspirational - our children will lead by our example.

  • The Benefits and Drawbacks of Credit Unions   13 years 48 weeks ago

Once upon time, in a land far away . . . Banks helped their customers to make money. Nowadays they make money from their customers! We have had business accounts with multiple Australian banks and they have let us down repeatedly. Only the Credit Unions have stood shoulder to shoulder with our enterprises and helped us to succeed. We have complete on-line business facilities and trade world wide with multiple banking and financial institutions without worry, no excessive charges and complete confidence in the Credit Union concept. We have even received a Member's bonus payment from our Credit Union. Subsequently, we have closed all of our Australian Banking accounts (Commonwealth, Westpac, BankSA) because they were predatory! Advice: Don't delay join a CU today!

  • How to Make Moonshine   13 years 48 weeks ago

    Country Bob,

My pleasure. Tap water is better then distilled water. Well water, or stream water, would be better boiled. The actual yeast they use is special. I believe it is 2 yeast. The first is a fast, low % yielding yeast. I think it also has a slower, high % yeast to finish it off. Since the faster yeast will die from alcohol poisoning, it cannot be reused. The higher % yeast could be reused, but will be very slow. Your best bet, keep buying it or settle for a less productive yeast. The yeast, as any rate, can only survive at one level of alcohol, you cannot stack it or double up the rates.

  • Why I Hate Credit Card Points   13 years 48 weeks ago

Have to agree with you about the points - recently there's been a rise of premium cards with points rewards that are only redeemable if you keep the premium card status - instead of the points being converted to an outside organization like air miles, you have to stick with the program to get the points...

Flowers don't seem very frugal, but flowering plants are. Depending on what you buy, blossoms can last weeks to months, and the plant can last years.

  • 9 Costly Things New Homeowners Don't Prepare For   13 years 48 weeks ago

I was just reading this with dread, thinking about some hidden costs that I wouldn't have considered, but I think we have all of these covered. Fortunately, most of the work that needs doing on the home that I am trying to buy is fairly reasonable, and things that I can get done with a little elbow grease (and my dad's help - the man has never met a back deck that he didn't want to work on).

I figure I'll skip the window treatments. If my neighbors want to peak in and see me walking around naked, I'm not obliged to pay for their therapy. ;)

As to the estimates on the costs, though - these actually seemed LOW to me! The house I am looking to buy is outside of Seattle, and the homeowner's insurance rates are going to be over $100/month. Utilities are also quite high in the area, and if I were into landscaping, I could easily see being quoted 30K for a good sized yard. Hell, a couple of years ago, I tried to put in a new fence and redo the foundation of my 200 sq foot courtyard and was quoted well over 10K just for that. I decided to skip it.

I would also like to encourage all Americans to stop criticizing America and Americans. We as a Country and as Citizen's have been a source of much good in the world over our short history. We have also made mistakes. Please don't let those mistakes outweigh the good we have done. We can continue to do good in the world with the fabulous wealth and resources we have collectively, and with the amazing system of Government we have inherited. Please leave out the stereotypes such a "lazy Americans" etc. Let's stop putting ourselves and our fellow Americans down. That won't assist us in continuing to share the benefits of our incredible inheritance of Freedom, for the good and advancement of the interests all the people of the world. We are truly blessed. Let us be thankful and remember the good we have been able to do, in order to do even more good. Please remember, there is some good in every one of us. Thank you for allowing me to express my views.
