How about one of those food saver machines? Anyone have any comments about those? I have been thinking of getting one but am not sure if they really hold up to what they advertise.

honestly, gluten-free cooking or not, these are all splendid kitchen appliances. i use my rice cooker every other week, on average (found a Zojirushi for $10 at a kitchen outlet). my stand mixer gets a lot more use in the fall/winter than it does in summer, but i imagine i'd use it a lot more frequently if i had a pasta attachment. our bread maker gets regular use, and is the only one i really complain about - due to the size, that sucker takes up a LOT of space. my Kitchen Aid honestly takes up a lot less space in comparison. our crock pot gets monthly use.

the most expensive item on the list, the freezer, gets CONSTANT use. we shop at Costco for most of our regular grocery trips, and we'll pack that sucker to the gills when we go. it ends up saving us tons of money in the long run since we'll go there MAYBE once a month.

    Outstanding, Sonja!

The only thing I haven't dished out for yet is a standing mixture. I think there are pasta attachments one can buy with those.

I am looking forward to your gluten-free pasta recipes. We technically don't have to go gluten-free at our house, but we are toying with the concept. Looking forward to more articles on this topic, and I'm sure our readers are too.

I agree heartily with all of these tips - and lucky you finding the bread machine on the cheap! I actually shelled out the cash for a new bread machine once I was diagnosed and it was still worth every penny.
One thing I haven't had the courage to try is noodles - I've just gone without. Would you mind sharing your recipe?

  • Ruthless Frugality   16 years 13 weeks ago

I am not uncomfortable at child labour, I am sickened by it. These children are not sent out to supplement their families incomes they are the family's ONLY source of income in many, many countries as the local factories WILL NOT hire adults. This is all done so North Americans can buy a chunk of crap for 50 cents less at WalMart that probably will be broken or discarded with in a year. For any one that is interested you might enjoy watching www.storyofstuff.com to give you further insight.

  • Make Your DVD Player Region-Free in Seconds   16 years 13 weeks ago

I changed the code as indicated. I followed the directions exactly and was able to change it to 9 region free. However, my region 2 DVD still won't play. I changed it to region 2. Still won't play. I changed it back to region 1 (which is the region I'm in), and now the player won't even play region 1 DVDs. It says "bad" every time I put one in. I am afraid to try the unlock codes on my other players, so I am just going to buy a region free player. It will be cheaper in the long run.

  • We Are Our Own Worst Enemy   16 years 13 weeks ago

Kudos for a very well thought of content! The despair that we are experiencing is what several national debt elimination schemes bank on. I have to say we are still very fortunate that there are a lot of organizations that are devoted to helping us eliminate our debts.

    Keep the blog coming ;)

The word is "whets" not "wets" -- whets hones one's interest, sharpens it and might lead to further reading/discovery. Wets just damps your interest down and washes it away.

  • FINANCIAL IQ TEST: How Healthy is your Debt Management?   16 years 13 weeks ago

    I scored a 60. Yeah for me I guess.

I definitely need to get a list of all my credit cards in a safe place.

I question closing all the credit cards you don't use. By lowering your amount of available credit, aren't you in effect lowering your credit score?

  • Review: Bluebird -- Women and the New Psychology of Happiness   16 years 13 weeks ago

I do not think that the author of the review wants to talk you into not taking your medicine when you have bi-polar disorder. I assumed she's making the the obvious point that anti-depressants are used in many situations in which psychotherapy (i.e. seeking the underlying psychological reason for low mood) would do much better job.

What can plausibly disturb a reader though is an easy generalization of how women feel oppressed because American psychology says this and that. The existence or strength of social pressure (you feel) depends on many factors: where you live, your family history and expectations, your biography. But it's not the same thing as feeling the pressure coming from psychology teachings. Shows and talkers and books are quoted (so called popular psychology or psychology for the masses I guess) but the question is to what extent they represent "American psychology" and in particular how close it is to what you would learn from a certified psychotherapist.

To make things clear, I don't know how it really is in America, I only wanted to highlight disagreement about the factual situation between the author and readers. In my country social pressure is extremely strong and most often manages to efficiently hush more reasonable voices. But when it comes to what I read from psychologists, I it is very rare that I get the impression they want to put me into happily married with children box.

Sorry you cannot deduct babysitting while doing charity work. Please see IRS Publication 526

"No, you cannot deduct payments for child care expenses as a
qualified organization. Even if they are necessary so you can do
volunteer work for a qualified organization."

  • Review: Bluebird -- Women and the New Psychology of Happiness   16 years 13 weeks ago

I agree that societies idea of what ought to make us happy is unrealistic. I felt pressure to be married and have kids, while having a career and a rockin' body and climbing mountains and keeping up with the Jones. Women have been in a role transition, but we are still trying to please everyone around us and have no relationship to our own needs. I am changing this for myself now, but I wish I understood it 20 years ago. Sigh...

  • Are Rebates Worthy of You?   16 years 13 weeks ago

i would suggest to never buy anything for the rebate. i use to read lots of letters that people bought the thing for the rebate then do them all wrong. HP was notorious for complicated rebates and multiple rebates, we would see people sending entire boxes to us or b/c HP put soo many barcodes on the boxes many would send the wrong barcode. Also all the rebates say orginial barcode so your only likely to get 1 rebate if filled out correctly. it was horrible when parents sent laptops to troops w/ the entire box only to find out they needed the origninal barcode. i hated to read those letters, too keep my job i would have to mark in the database a photocopy was sent (most likely no rebate check would be sent). the Katrina letters were even harder to read.
    1. completely read rebate
    2. never throw out the box or reciept
    3. make photocopies of everthing
    4. if mailing make sure name is eligable in right hand corner (used if no name on rebate or to messy to read)
    5. offset mailing stamp a little lower (post mark is used for date eligibility)
    6. spell your name the way you want it on check or card (the way you spell it that is how it is going to come out)
    7. add street address with PO BOXs (for fraud purposes)
    8. only send what is needed (seen letter w/ ids, once i got $200 in cash, i turned it in)
    9. put your name and address on the back of all barcodes (your rebates sees a lot of hands)
    Good Luck!

  • FINANCIAL IQ TEST: How Healthy is your Debt Management?   16 years 13 weeks ago

I scored pretty high on your test! Very happy. The term "debt management" seems a bit lackadaisical to me. I prefer "debt blaster" or "debt killer," as I pretty much loathe debt. I understand what you mean about debt management though . . . we need to make sure we understand what debt is and how to get rid of it. Great article sir!

  • Review: Bluebird -- Women and the New Psychology of Happiness   16 years 13 weeks ago

Society doesn't dictate what makes me happy. I do. Know yourself and seize the day, carpe diem! Yes that's right. Only you know what makes you happy. Laugh n the world laughs with u, cry n u cry alone. Life is what we decide it is. I hold a BA in Finance, am part of a military unit n most important I'm a woman, a mother, daughter a friend etc because I choose to make those things important. I'm a single mother, sperm donor left when pregnant n I couldve cried about it. But I'm a woman, we're built to outlast men, we are superior in so many ways. Yet most depend on a man to tell them what to do. Mothers out there, empower your children, especially your daughters. My daughter is my pride n source of happiness. One smile takes away all my troubles.

  • Review: Bluebird -- Women and the New Psychology of Happiness   16 years 13 weeks ago

I see first-hand many other women like me dealing with a lot of social pressure and issues of self-fulfillment as mommies, wives. Many of these women (nearly -all- I know) are currently taking anti-depressives and battling depression symptoms.

****There has to be more to this than simply a demographic deciding not to take responsibility for their own happiness. I don't think it's a matter of placing blame as much as uncovering a possible source and changing this dynamic.

I understand feeling deeply passionate about this subject. I find myself compelled to talk about it, too. But I don't think that the author of this article or book deserves such venomous comments.

  • Extended Car Warranties: 3 Things to Know   16 years 13 weeks ago

Watch out for a warranty plan being offered from a company other than the manufacturer of the vehicle. I had one once and they did not honor it for a covered item. All they could do is come up with excuses not to pay you or your claim. Always keep service records on the vehicle covered and follow the manufacturers maintenance schedule. Companies offering warranties that are not being offered by the manufacturer of the vehicle are in business to make money and deny claims. I had a head gasket leak on a covered car, and the warrany company listed the gasket as a covered item. However, when they were informed about the problem they wanted me to pay $1,500.00 for a teardown inorder for one of their representatives to come to the service garage to inspect the condition. I had no assurance from this company that they would even pay my claim or put my car back together. After that, I have always bought warranties directly from the manufacturer of the vehicle and they have always paid when something broke without any questions or hastles.

  • Review: Bluebird -- Women and the New Psychology of Happiness   16 years 13 weeks ago

there are some helpful aspects to this book (providing role models for happiness), but I too question the premise that there is an 'American psychology' today forcing women into life choices they are not happy with, though unquestionably there was in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I certainly never felt any such constraints. Granted for some individuals there can be familial pressure, but that is not the same as societal pressure. And as another commenter pointed out, there is a physical component to depression that has nothing to do with outside forces.

  • Best Buy scamming customers with Intranet - UPDATED!   16 years 13 weeks ago

I made a purchase at my local Best Buy after checking prices on their website. In the store, I was being charged a higher price than shown on the companies website. A slick supervisor took my merchandise and went into a front office to check the price behind a closed door. A couple of minutes later, he came out and told me the items were being sold at the regular price, and were not on sale as I mentioned was advertised on their website. I had to show the clerk a printout of the exact same merchandise with the exact same sku #'s from their website. After doing so, they then decided to price adjust accordingly. When I asked them, "What is your price accuracy policy?" They were rather reluctant to answer me. Some stores will give you an additional $.$$ off the purchase or if the item is less than a certain amount of $.$$ they will give it to you for free. However, at Best Buy, they do not want their customers in their stores to know exactly what their policy is.

I have found in the past when I take the online survey posted on their website for evaluating my visit to their store, swift action is taken immediatly. I disagree with another post on this website where someone else said the managers do not give a s---. I rated my local Best Buy for having empty display cases in the store for months. On my next visit two weeks later, I found the discrepancies were corrected, product was now available when it was not for several months. Here is an example how a manager took action against someone who was supposed to be managing or supervising a department, and was failing miserably. I encourage everyone else to take the online survey from the instructions printed on their store receipts when they visit their local stores. Swift action is taken and out of stocks created by lazy associates are addressed.

However, keep in mind, when you go to Best Buy, always check the price online first, and print out the item you are interested in to avoid being overcharged in their store.

  • Flying With Valuables? Keep Them Safe And Carry A Gun!   16 years 13 weeks ago

That's interesting, though it seems to me that it would ultimately slow down screening if a lot of people were doing this. Might be a good idea though if you are traveling with something that is both expensive and not easily replaceable by insurance.

Although this sentence is probably REALLY not a good idea and unnerves me.

"and you'll also be the owner of something which may even act as a deterrent when you're not flying."

Having a gun that can't actually shoot someone and pulling it on them (or carrying a gun and not knowing what you are doing) is probably the worst thing you can be doing. If someone were to pull a gun on me I would believe they had EVERY INTENTION of shooting me, and if I were to pull a gun on someone, it would be because I had every intention of defending myself by shooting and killing them. There have been multiple cases where kids with toy guns of some sort have been shot by police who could not distinguish if it was real.

Buying a 53.00 starter pistol as a 'deterrent' from anything but false starts at a swim meet in other words, is a mistake.

  • Volunteer to Travel: 11 Opportunities for Free or Very Cheap Travel   16 years 13 weeks ago

Well I think the point of traveling and volunteering abroad is to gain and provide consideration and kindness to others. With the way you talk to people, I don't care how much you traveled or what it cost you, you have obviously missed the point.
