Not right now, but I'd like to grow a few things. I live in a condo, and everything would have to be grown on my balcony.

I bought a lot of macadamia nuts to bring back from Hawaii when I went there on my honeymoon. I ended up eating all of them on the plane!

Yes, I ask people "what do you like to do?" instead of "what do you do". Much better to get them to open up.

I have had my own garden for the last two years! Nothing better! Leeks, peppers, carrots, radishes, etc. You name it! Keep the critters out and some water in the ground and you'll save yourself boat loads! Great way to get outdoors and get some fresh air.

No, I wish. It is something I want to do, but haven't taken the time. I'm not really sure where to start.

We tried sunflowers and corn one year, but were stolen by the squirrels. The potatoes got too wet (were planted in a low spot). The green beans, squash, okra and tomatoes were prolific!! The strawberries went to the birds. Planted sweet potatoes this year . . so far 2 out of the 5 plants have survived (bought as seedlings). Had too many 40 deg nights after planting

Not this year! I just had a baby! :)

I've always gardened. When I had an apartment or condo, I container gardened herbs and salad greens. Now that my husband and I have a home with a nice sized yard, we plant in four beds; about 150 sq. feet. We usually grow lettuces, kale, collard, and mustard greens, onions and garlic, tomatos, and several types of beans and squashes. It's not so much about saving money; though it is a plus. It's more about quality, freshness, variety and flavor; and being a bit self sufficient. Since we live in Colorado, water conservation is important. We mulch heavily and use soaker hoses to get the most efficient use out of our water.

I grow lemons and avocados in my garden

  • Why You Should Never Buy Souvenirs   13 years 4 weeks ago

Instead of buying souvenir t-shirts while on vacation, we buy a Christmas ornament. This way, the ornament is only out during the Christmas season. We can reminisce and talk about our trip to visitors to our home. If we really want to get something for family or friends, we usually try to go for something edible. It's still a thoughtful gift with virtually no worries about storage. Once you eat it, it's gone! It's a win-win!

THis is a great read, thanks! I have a recipe myself that's under $20 and it feeds up to 4 people. Best drummies you'll ever have bar-none!

YES!!! Love growing our own food and there is nothing better the fresh green bean or tomatoes out of the garden to complete a meal grilled out in the summer. We also freeze and can the fresh food from our garden. Can't wait to plant this weekend.

I would love to grow my own veggies, but as a single mom of 3 teens in a rental space, it's hard to find the time and space! I considered a container garden this year, but I'm concerned about possums, cats and raccoons invading my crops.

We started a garden last year and will do the same again this year. There is nothing like going outside and picking fresh herbs and veggies!!

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Grow Your Own Food?   13 years 4 weeks ago

Our own food, not yet, but our own herbs, definitely! We are planning a garden this year though, so I'm starting the seeds today in small eggshells to replant later. Should be interesting to see what happens!

If you are entering Canada, bringing home a pressed leaf is probably illegal as it would qualify as a plant product under the Plant Protection Act by the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency. As someone who travels for a living, I've found that gifts of food are most appreciated as souvenirs. Items such as Jamaica rum cakes, Fauchon chocolates, canned goods such as jams ( not honey as it is also regulated) and even smoked fish are usually permissible. I only choose food items I love, that way if the intended recipient doesn't like the gift, I can always eat it myself!

I don't grow my own food.

A little bit. Just planted tomatoes, peppers, squash and cucumber this weekend (and ran outside to cover the last night because it dropped below freezing!). We also grow strawberries (a huge favorite in our house).

I just started growing some herbs and peppers this year. I live in an apartment so it is a bit hard.

  • Breaking the Bread Code: How to Get the Freshest Loaf   13 years 4 weeks ago

The orange and black would expand the scheme to 7 days, maintaining alphabetical order (Black = Sunday; Orange = Wednesday). I have no fact to back that up except that I too have seen orange ties and after reading this assumed those were from Wednesday.

  • Ask the Readers: What Do You Buy in Bulk?   13 years 4 weeks ago

We buy meat from Costco, portion it out and freeze it. Same thing with cheese. And toilet paper (minus the freezing).

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I agree that having a specific number helps with focus. If it's not a general number (like $1,000,000), then it's a number you've come up after performing more advanced calculations.

  • Couponing: Hobby or Lifestyle?   13 years 4 weeks ago

I agree with the article slow and steady saves the pennies when it comes to couponing these days. I do clip coupons as a hobby but definitely NOT extreme. I only get two newspapers since I buy a lot of basics I need in twos and that's it. With a lot of crack down on coupon policies and manufacture's lowering the redemption values these days on coupons, to me it seems like you're only saving pennies instead of dollars on items these days. About a year ago for example, I could save a $1 off 1 item like soap powder or tissue now its about .40 cents off one and $1 off 3 these days, which makes stretching dollars a bit harder these days. Not to mention, a lot of stores in my area no longer double coupons anymore either, there's only just 1 now that still does

I still think using coupons do help, but it takes a little longer to find bargains and good deals than it used too. For example, when it comes to things like paper goods and laundry detergents the dollar stores in my area offer better deals than some of the grocery stores do. For those that do extreme couponing I wish there were more articles on maintaining couponing etiquette that deals with how not to be that-couponer-the one's that are rude with an attitude We've all seen at some point or another LOL! That would surely be nice!

  • Couponing: Hobby or Lifestyle?   13 years 4 weeks ago

I'm a hobbyist, but I do end up getting a lot of items for free or a few cents. At first, I wasn't that great at it and actually overspent a lot of the times. However, what I've learned is to not refer to the generic nationwide couponing blogs (krazycouponlady, etc...), but look at blogs of couponers in your area. Those are the ones that have an idea of the current deals and sales for your local stores and how you can stack coupons and sales to your benefit.
