We have several gardens around our home that we enjoy. We plant a lot from seeds and like finding new plants to add to our collection through this inexpensive means. We also exchange plants and seeds with friends and neighbors.
My husband builds garden decorations of wood and stone. I have a miniature fairy/gnome garden, and we make houses and decor for the residents. This area includes mini plants and flowers.
We also enjoy just watching the local critters and photographing them.
It gets so hot here in the summer that swimming in the community pool (free) or going to the beach (gas and parking + packed lunch = not quite free) are good options. We also like to picnic in the nearby county park in the late afternoon.
Great piece, and I hear ya on the laptop thing. I went through university without one and it even took me a while to get a cell phone with data. But that's probably not surprising re: my chrometophobia post you linked to! :)
Hey! Great article. Here is another one to look out for....
You think you have a deal, only to drive off the lot with a horrible set of tires. Yes, they will give you "deal" and then screw you on a lot of things....bad tires, etc. Take a measurement with you and check the tire tread. Then subtract the cost of the tires from their best price.
My favorite thing to do in the summer is go on road trips which I try to do as frugally as possible. If I'm stuck at home I prefer to hang out indoors in the AC rather than being outdoorsy. Except for going to drive-in movies which is really cheap compared to seeing movies in regular theatres. You see two or three films for the price of one, can bring your own food and drink, and it's a lot of fun!
Having detasseled corn myself (for just a week or so as a traveling college student, in the field with experienced junior-high and high school kids), every word of this article is a treasure. One additional thought, expressed by the not-owlish Junior, the overall-wearing adult (so-to-speak) boss of the crew: "When I tell you to do something, don't be asking "who?" Who! Hoo! Hoo! Your feet don't fit no limb!"
I tried a few of the companies above but it seems that the comments are a bit outdated because milesbuyer.com offered me much higher payouts. Sold them my Delta miles and american express points and they paid me after just seeing a screenshot. Highly recommended and i'm happy I found this article.
I have found cornstarch works the best. Then follow with dishwashing detergent. You have to do it asap though. And don't use a cloth to rub but pat it dry so the fabric doesn't ball up.
I like a municipal bond fund..... Currently, my whole emergency fund is sitting in Invesco's IIM Am I taking some risk, sure, but it crushed my online savings account in terms of monthly distributions.
The free concerts they put on in the parks in San Diego are great, as are the weekly free museum days for residents. Plus I love how it stays light outside so late, feels like you've got extra time to play!
#1 - indicative of what traveling is like these days - full of rude and obnoxious people. Going to a line you aren't supposed to be in... completely rude and obnoxious.
#2 - yeah... good luck with any of that. Gate agents aren't going to upgrade you for free - especially considering how full (including first class) planes are these days.
Several of the suggestions seem ethically questionable or just slimy. I would never purposely go into a line I am not supposed to use. I cannot imagine hanging out at a lounge begging somebody to bring me inside as their new "friend". Yikes. Would I really claim I have some hypoglycemic disorder requiring food to be upgraded at check in? I hope not. I would hope most people reading the article have too much self respect to actually follow the majority of suggestions.
The best frugal summer activities are going to the beach, going to the movies, having a BBQ, lounging by the swimming pool, and hosting dinner parties.
A trip to the park, for either disk golf or some other sport, or if by myself, a walk, jog or bike ride, followed up with a 50 cent cone of ice cream at Micky D's.... if its super warm out, a trip to the movie theatre (my local one does $5 movies on Tuesdays).

The chain Half Price Books has used audiobooks for around $10 on CD, and you can sell them back afterward.

We like packing a picnic and taking the family to our county park. The kids love the playground and we like the walking paths.

I like to teach myself a new art or craft during the summer. Supplies and kits run about $25 mostly.
My favorite frugal summer activity is going on bike rides!

I love going hiking. Most places that are good for a hike are an hour or less from my place, are free to enter, and cost gas and a packed lunch.

I like to get the family together and play lawn games such as badminton and have a BBQ.

Come on, I fly an average of 4 flights a week. The writer of this article is about 5 years out of touch with reality.

Bicycling on the towpath and having a picnic lunch.
