  • 5 Affordable Solutions for Acid Reflux Disease   14 years 33 weeks ago

I have been successfully used and am still using apple cider vinegar. It must be the one that contains the "mother". This is NOT usually found in your local supermarket. I use a tablespoon in 8 oz. of water at lunch and again with the evening meal. For me I know it works, because if I miss two doses in a row, the indigestion comes back. Try it. It cheaper than medications and if you find it doesn't work for you, you can use it on salads or other recipes.

I support this movement. As a unemployed worker with a graduate degree, I feel as though the rules of the game that we were taught growing up have changed. Just because you do well in school and work hard, does not mean you will get a job and prosper.

  • Extreme Couponing? 5 Reasons Why I’ll Pass.   14 years 33 weeks ago

Anyone notice how magically everyone who defends "extreme couponing" says they stockpile but they give the extras away to charity? If that was truly the case than why is it that in this day and age we are seeing food bank donations in decline?

by the way, to the "donation" hoarders..I mean stockpilers there isn't a need to clean the shelf to make a donation, most stores contact local food banks to give them some of their excess items so cut the bs.

  • 25 Productive Things to Do on a Rainy Day   14 years 33 weeks ago

I love taking a rainy afternoon and clean my apartment. A good deep cleaning of the bathroom and kitchen. The best is washing the bed sheets so when the day is over I get to slip into bed to that amazing clean fabric smell. Cheesy and simple but it's what makes me feel good about a rainy day.

So now "Wise Bread" is branching out by publishing puerile political diatribes by "freelance writers" who can't get published anywhere else? Are we to think of this as an act of charity?

Phil this is a great summary with wonderful linked resources!

I just linked it to the Occupy Indianapolis FB page and the We are the 99 Percent - Indianapolis meetup group.

  • Is Six Figures Really That Much?   14 years 33 weeks ago

I am a recent college grad and I live in the Washington DC metro area. I totally believe that a 100k+ income isn't enough for a family. Whoever makes less than that (i.e. me) is pretty much screwed (unless they eat McDonald's and buy processed foods from the supermarket, which is going to bite you when you get older anyway). Anyone who says they can live comfortably off of a 50k income with kids is crazy, and if you can in some god-knows-where rural America it may be ok now but things are just going to get more expensive in these times and I'll bet you your salary isn't going to keep up no matter who you are.

  • Volunteer to Travel: 11 Opportunities for Free or Very Cheap Travel   14 years 33 weeks ago

I was doing so story research and came across your story. Very comprehensive. I have a thought to do a story for our non profit video series Traveltelevision.org, a monthly travel services about travel with a purpose. Any suggestions on how to get video clips of the volunteers from these group?

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Know Your Credit Score?   14 years 33 weeks ago

I know roughly what our score is. I did check last year, but haven't since. I don't imagine it has changed much

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Know Your Credit Score?   14 years 33 weeks ago

  • DIY Shampoo: The Baking Soda Experiment   14 years 33 weeks ago

I've been using the baking soda and vinegar for awhile now and absolutely love it. I have a problem with psoriasis on my scalp, neck & back. Since using this, my scalp doesn't itch as bad and the scales on my dark clothes are nearly non-existant. Also, using baking soda instead of soap or bodywash has completely cleared up the huge patch on my neck and back. I'm not saying it will work for everyone with psoriasis, but it sure has mine and it's a whole lot cheaper than the prescription meds the doc wanted me to use!!

Also - my husband was using Head & Shoulders and his hair, normally very thick, had gotten so thin his scalp was showing through. He's been using the baking soda and vinegar and his hair is growing back thicker again.

Just a note, a few years ago I tried Pantene Pro Vitamin shampoo and it did the same thing to my hair, it was thinning out. Stopped and went to something else and it came back in thicker.

  • Is Bank of America’s $5 Monthly Debit Card Fee Just the Beginning?   14 years 33 weeks ago

This scares me. I hope that behavior like this will push consumers to use credit unions more.

  • Is Bank of America’s $5 Monthly Debit Card Fee Just the Beginning?   14 years 33 weeks ago

I disagree that the wealth is being rewarded by keeping 20, 000 on the account. Believe you me,
the bank will manage to squeeze 60 USD from your 20, 000 balance a year...

The economy is such state that you can not do it without banks. So I agree, this is just a beginning...
but, on the other hand if we were picking up 44 cents per swipe (I hope you do not thing that merchants were not passing on to you the swipe)...
maybe we are saving some money.

This is assuming merchants dropped the prices..

  • Occupy Wall Street, the 99%, and All That   14 years 33 weeks ago

This is not communism, if rich does not want to pay you more, so be it.
No revolution should allowed here, go to China for that.

There is no fairness - whether you get money, or student loan - this how the free economy works.

And the protesters are not 99%, they are absolute minority, who are draining our social benefits and staying out of work.

  • What NOT to Buy at a Farmers Market   14 years 33 weeks ago

Honestly I do not believe in the farmers markets - it is same stuff being supplied to the supermarkets.
It is just our imagination makes it better, if you ready topay more - go to wholefoods or any other store - excellent selection and good preserved.

But the advice not to buy anything unrelated to farm is good. Thank you for that.

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Know Your Credit Score?   14 years 33 weeks ago

I checked once a year when you can get the free credit score rating. Its important to know your number and make wise choices.

  • Avoiding the Poverty Tax   14 years 33 weeks ago

+1 on changing "poverty tax" to "ignorance tax". Many people who suddenly move from poverty to the upper income levels through pro sports contracts or lottery winnings are broke soon afterwards because of their own financial mismanagement. The "tax" you discuss in your article exists, but is completely independent of income level.

  • Snipe an Ebay auction, save a fortune.   14 years 33 weeks ago

This is little more than an ad for a sniping service. Do-it-yourself sniping is trivially easy to master: Plug in the single, highest bid that you are willing to pay, but don't click the Confirm button until the final few seconds. (If you're on a slower connection, such as a cellphone, give yourself a slightly bigger cushion, such as 10 seconds.)

The auction goes to the highest bidder, not the quickest (except in the case of an exact tie, in which case the earlier bid wins). There is no point in bidding on Tuesday for an auction that doesn't end until Thursday, and waiting for the final seconds if possible achieves two goals:

    1) It prevents you from getting carried away and overbidding, in case your bid is not sufficient to win, and

    2) It prevents someone with deeper pockets from outbidding you, in case you take the lead; they will not have enough time to rebid for more than you were willing to pay. Ergo, you win; they don't.

Save your money; don't pay a sniping service unless you know you won't be near the keyboard at the end of the auction.

  • Is Bank of America’s $5 Monthly Debit Card Fee Just the Beginning?   14 years 33 weeks ago

I've decided to go old school and start using cash again. No fees. When I run out of cash, I stop spending. Very simple. No overdraft problems and related fees, either.

  • Occupy Wall Street, the 99%, and All That   14 years 33 weeks ago

I appreciate your statements, but would you rather have them weeping in the streets, pouring ashes on their heads and rending their garments? This is merely creative expression. A lot of it reflects current trends in literature and media: zombies, vampires, etc. I can't say I always understand (or even like), at first blush, the means of an individuals expression of protest, but that's not necessary. The point is that they are doing it - and I respect that. In closing, the "99 %" don't own major media outlets. They only have their bodies, hearts and minds with which to protest.

Let the dialogue continue...we all have a lot more in common than not.
