  • Line Drying Your Laundry: Frugal or Foolish?   14 years 43 weeks ago

Line dry! I use a natural detergent and vinegar in the rinse for a softener. Towels and all. Rain water is no issue, I had to use rain water in Peace Corps TO wash and bathe.

  • Ask the Readers: Would You Donate to the Government?   14 years 43 weeks ago

I already have...I paid my taxes. I would not voluntarily give the government any more money when they have shown time & time again that they can't properly manage what they have currently.

  • Ask the Readers: Would You Donate to the Government?   14 years 43 weeks ago

Yes! I don't mean to get all Socrates-y, but if we live through the times of largess we should at least help pay up in hard times.

Yup! I second this one! The one I dropped off my wire hangers to seemed very grateful (less for them to have to purchase, so it's a win for all!).

If you have old books try Paperbackswap.com. You can list your old books and trade for new books. All you pay is the cost of postage. It is great if you like to read. It has helped me read even more and I like to see other people's reviews of books.

Another good idea is to choose a week's worth of clothes on Sunday. Put together a complete outfit on a hanger and you'll save the hassle of deciding what to wear every morning. This works for the parents as well.

Also, decide on a week's worth of lunches/snacks and post the list on your fridge. Just rotate through it, changing the chicken salad for tuna, or grapes for oranges, for example. You can have a Panera-like system or soup/sandwich, salad/sandwich, or soup/salad. They pack easily, and are quick to prepare once you have a few key ingredients ready.

  • Will Obama's new mortgage plan really reward responsibility?   14 years 43 weeks ago

Wow...totally shocked at the high and mighty attitude from previous posters. We got in this predicament because we could afford the payments. But then gas skyrocketed and increased my cost to drive to school and drive my kids to school, to drive to the store. The cost of fuel then drove prices of food up, along with nearly anything else that has to be shipped somewhere, and also drove up heating and cooling costs. Who knew that the value of property would drop RIGHT AFTER we secured the property?!?! NEVER would have forecast that!!! We only got behind because of the market! Boy, were we looking for a handout and boy, is this lazy family deserving of losing their home because all we ever wanted was to rip off the public! All we ever wanted was to pay for this house, but never foresaw the inflation, the market crashing and my husband's job of 5 yrs dissipate. Were we ever ignorant! (sarcasm included!)

  • Wardrobe Staples Every Man Should Own   14 years 43 weeks ago

Couple of points: undershirts are a matter of taste, I guess, with more casual clothes like button-downs, etc. But you should be aware that they are a bit of a class marker. Best to avoid them with dressier shirts, IMHO.

As for the socks, you should have a few pairs of black socks, but the navy, tan, etc. socks are a lot more important, so that entry is a bit confusing. Your socks should match your trousers. And the only time you should be wearing black trousers is with a dinner jacket. Dark charcoal is acceptable though, and black socks go with that well enough, though charcoal socks would be better.

A couple of items are conspicuously absent from this list. In particular, every man should have _at least_ one reasonably good suit, IMHO. Navy is the best color if you can have only one suit. Charcoal would be a good choice for a second suit. Not Black, and not microfiber. Wool. Preferably fully canvassed, though that will make it a bit pricey.

Thanks for the heads-up, guest. I've made the change.

Melatonin is sleep hormone. Melanin is a substance that gives skin and hair its color. Learn the difference.

You could also go to the different factory tours near you. I have been to several cheese making tours, the jelly belly tour and we have an olive mill tour we still want to see.

Also, going to one of those paint your own pottery places can be fun too.

I was just lame and went to bed early (or, I suppose, "college early").

None of my roommates ever snored, oddly enough. I probably did, though.

I know there must be some schools or libraries that need books somewhere in the U.S. or abroad. It seems that we have more books than we need in the New York Area. Does anyone know a good program that accepts donated books?

  • What Was Your Financial Fork in the Road?   14 years 43 weeks ago

I'm actually at my fork, or at least was about six months ago. I'm going through a divorce, bankruptcy and am now the sole provider for my amazing three-year-old little girl. I'm not even thirty. But I've realized the life I've led is not the same one I want to share with my daughter.

Unfortunately a stainless steel timepiece isn't an option for those of us with hairy arms. I have to stick to bands that don't pull hairs on my wrist. Fortunately there are some timepieces that have interchangeable bands that allow for different colors (brown vs. black).

I'll second the earplugs and their place near the top of the list. Those things got me through college.

  • Organizing Your Financial Paperwork   14 years 43 weeks ago

Keeping the time-sensitive stuff where you'll always see it is so important -- more than once I've accidentally lost a bill in a pile of papers.

Does anybody have other suggestions for easy financial paperwork organizing?

  • 5 Effective Sleep Tips You Haven't Tried Yet   14 years 43 weeks ago

These are great Will. However, I discovered inadvertantly that my sleeplessness was due to sleep apnea. I think a lot of people may have this undiagnosed disorder. Untreated apnea can cause all sorts of health concerns - so it's worth a check-up or sleep study to see if you have it.

i would add: baby powder and baby wipes. there will inevitably be a couple times when you wake up 7 minutes before the start of your first class. there's no time for a shower in this situation. The baby wipes will help you feel refreshed, and the baby powder will help you not stink. Plus, you can rub a little powder through your hair to keep it from looking oily.

  • Are your new tires really 6-year old ticking time-bombs?   14 years 43 weeks ago

You people are nuts. I have been in the tire biz for years. 6 year old tires are not unsafe, unless you are getting large cracks in the SIDEWALL of the tire. Most accidents are caused by underinflation. You can keep tires on the shelf INSIDE for 10 years. Wanna know what is death to tires? The SUN. Or letting the vehicle sit for 2 years without moving it. Bottom line if your tires are not cracked in the sidewalls, and they dont have any "bubbles" , they are probably ok. You can buy a brand new, 1 month old tire, and it will blow out, and that six year old one next to it is fine. I see it all the time. And tread separations? EXtemely RARE. Even retreads nowadays, -technology has come a long way.
