Thank you so much for writing about your experience!! I received a NetSpend Master Card in the mail and I reacted the same way. I initially thought that somebody had filled out a credit card application with my information. I was really scared! I'm relieved after reading this article. This company is disgusting. If this piece of mail ends up going to somebody else with your name on it, who knows what could happen!!
The day I give money to bail out this self-inflicted deficit is the day Congress empowers a separate, independent agency to set its own pay and benefits packages.
I think this is a matter of personal preference. I don't like black slacks and I don't think they're wardrobe staples, but some guys may. I appreciate the comment.
Love the ideas! We are road trip fanatics and our "go to" road trip snacks always include nuts, cheese and crackers, black olives and boiled peanuts (yeah, a little messy but a road trip tradition with us). Low-salt deli turkey breast wrapped around a cheese stick is another favorite. A cooler with drinks, snacks and we are good to go!
Agua de Piedra 2010 Malbec is foul juice. Only tart plum flavors, acidic, thin with no mid palete and definitely no decent finish . . . a complete waste at any price.
Can I just say how jealous I am that I can't wear a tie? And no, I really can't - I look like I'm in drag if I do. But I love ties, and if I were a man, I would have several dozen of them.
My husband has a rather large collection of knit silk undershirts - not just in white, but also in gray and black.
What's interesting to me is that they don't tend to make men's underthings in "nude" tone. I mention this because I remember purchasing a bra once, and having the saleswoman ask why I was buying a white bra. I showed her the white shirt I had just bought, and she pointed out that white underthings show through white clothing very starkly. She pointed me in the direction of "nude" toned bras, and I've never looked back. A white undershirt can REALLY be seen under a nice white dress shirt, but there doesn't even seem to be a more skin-tone oriented shirt for men, does there?
Of course, beige undergarments aren't ideal for people with darker skin tones, either, but anything seems better to me than bright white under white.
Well, I now have my Christmas and birthday gift requests figured out. Classic is always the best - time-tested will never guide you wrong. Thanks for braking it down into simple, clear ideas of what wardrobe-challeneged guys like me can do. I'd probably add that owning a good pair of $80 polished black shoes is also essential. They'll last a long time and go with everything and look very sharp.
My glasses always get scratched no matter what the material. Toothpaste scratches the AR coating on plastic lenses, by my personal experience. I tried toothpaste on glass lenses. After an hour, I tried with a cotton buff on a drill, but didn't work even after an hour. Using buffing compound on glass with this method made it worse. I tried this method with a pair of sunglasses with lost of small scratches; even with a delicate touch, it seemed to take away most of the scratches, but left more deeper ones. I tried it with a pair of trivex lenses and it didn't work at all.
Well let's put it this way, I would love to donate to the debt and not the government. I don't believe in rewarding grown men and women who act like children in big bodies. I certainly would if I had a couple million people doing so with me (so that it would actually make a dent) and definitely some kind of guarantee, in writing that said where it was going. Oh yeah, and promise to make insanely profitable corporations pay some taxes. If my demands are too much then I'll keep what little of my paycheck is not taxed.
You could consider a chest freezer converted to use as a refrigerator. Google this and find out why this works and how easy it is to convert. Many off the grid folks do this.
I would add a cool shower in the summer or a warm one in the winter before crawling in bed and my personal favorite is to find an old tv show on Netflix (Twilight Zone) that reminds me of being a kid. The black & white ones are great because the images aren't shifting every 7 seconds and they're fairly calming as they've got a darker image to them. The comment about removing the curtains has helped out as well. We just moved to a place where we can do that and with the curtains down and the windows open, I go to sleep to crickets and cicadas and wake up to the sun. It's so much nicer. Thanks for the license to wake up early and eat ice cream while watching sci-fi by the way! ;)
Great points but you hit a nerve when discussing books. I keep a pretty spare listing (particularly since my Bachelors is in English and I've been an avid book worm all my life) but I keep them because I annotate them as I go and have gone back to them over and over. I have a Kindle for the ones that are less personal to me. Perhaps the better point would be to keep the ones that you go back to (for me that would be Dante, Call of the Wild; etc) while ditching any top ten bestsellers that you had to have from the pharmacy ten years ago. Or, you could just spend your time reading the greats and never having to worry about it again. ;)
Excellent ideas for enjoying the smaller things in life. I especially agree with the scented soaps from Bath & Body Works. I love pampering myself after a long day of work with a nice bubble bath, and the products are pretty inexpensive.
A good showerhead is great idea too. I will have to look into that, thanks for the idea.
I agree with you on many of these. We're actually moving away from the scented hand soaps. I have sensitive skin that's prone to eczema breakouts, and have found that the fragrances and such that Bath & Body works make them some of the worst on the market when it comes to things like allergies and what not. In this case, we're going back to the simple SoftSoap solution. Luxury is great but sometimes kicking it old school works too :)
Very good list Paul.
Interesting to note in the responses what people are attached to. One of my personal weaknesses in books. For the rest, I finally got a close friend, who needed something to do and could use the extra cash to do it for me. This gets me past my emotional bond to the things that, as you have rightly pointed out, now own me.
If I can't find it, she's probably taken it off to GoodWill or church or someplace it can be of use. The curious thing is, I haven't replaced any of those things.
Who knew?

The clock has just hit 4:01 am as I write this comment. I think tomorrow I may get some Melatonin as suggested!

Thank you for your comment.
I would donate time and a small amount of money if I could direct it to specific programs.

Haha. This made me laugh when I read it on my phone. Touche. But you should talk to the Wise Bread editors about their photo choices. :)

I didn't see ruffly tuxedo shirt on the list
You can donate now , but when you do it doesn't go to paying off the debt. It just goes to new spending. Their was a blog post on another site that told all about it & it was documented.

Glad the ideas were helpful to someone, and I think the jam is a decent idea. Especially if you're using the low sugar / high fruit content variety.
Binder clips are ideal for biking in a dress. Just clip the skirt together like pants! I explain it here on my blog: http://hotchallah.tumblr.com/post/6758470888/are-you-aware-of-it-how-to-...

A nice pair of black slacks. Pleated if you are thin and flat front if not..
