  • Getting Whole-Grain Nutrition   14 years 38 weeks ago

I think the USDA and their recommendations are a joke, and their latest "pyramid" is so absurd I'm left scratching my head. Thankfully, at least they got this one kind of right and are trying to encourage whole grain intake. As you point out though, one has to be careful with labeling, since a lot of what passes for "whole" is anything but. In my opinion, your best bet is cooking at home with whole foods (brown rice, whole wheat flour, etc.).

  • Getting Rid of Acne   14 years 38 weeks ago

Good article. I didn't have acne until I was in my early 20s and sometimes it got bad (BTW I'm 41 years old). I spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars on prescription and over the counter medicine. I've been pretty much acne free since September 2008. As others have said, tea tree oil really helped. My other suggestions would be to get a non-irritating cleanser with 0.5% salicylic acid and use an oil free sunscreen during the day (if you are female and wear make-up, make sure nothing you put on your face will clog your pores). The one thing that ultimately stopped the breakouts was that I stopped eating any dairy products. I don't know why this helped so much but it did. Not eating dairy is a small price to pay for having clear skin and not having to spend money on expensive acne treatments.

I buy "real" books, used online. I hate reading digital books! And buying used is better for the environment and my wallet.

  • Getting Whole-Grain Nutrition   14 years 38 weeks ago

In my opinion, that's absolutely absurd. Six slices of bread is quite a bit. Try getting those same nutrients from vegetables, nuts, seeds, etc. You'll get way more bang for your buck. The FDA will not publish a food pyramid that cuts out any specific market. The grain farmers would be pretty pissed if all of the sudden the FDA put out dietary recommendations that said not to eat grains.

  • Ask The Readers: How Do You Buy Books?   14 years 38 weeks ago

I buy books! I buy books at bookstores -- which I LOVE -- but most frequently online for the convenience and pricing. I buy hard copies, both hardback and paperback. These are books I want not only to read but to add to my personal library and may read or refer to again. I use my public library for materials I believe will be one-time reads (purely for pleasure or to satisfy a quick curiosity) or are more expensive than I can afford even if I plan to re-sell.

I shop second hand.. but I'm unemployed and refuse to pay full retail price for books.

Wonderful article...as a kid, I too saved all the money I got on birthdays and from small household chores I did. And as i grew up I started investing the same in various schemes and other investments. It was like I was getting regular income without a job right from school days!

I think it depends on how long you will have to recoup costs. We are buying a beautiful house and are paying less than the current owners did in 2009. And, they added a deck and replaced flooring.

I purchase all of my books on my Amazon Kindle, however I still love the bookstore. Sad to see Borders go, hopefully B&N can effectively adapt to the changing book marketplace. I like the bookstore because it sparks creativity, I can make purchases of books that don't work well on the Kindle (this hasn't happened yet, but I suspect that it will with reference books) and it is a great place to read. I've always wanted to see Private Libraries, sort of like a FedEx to the government's USPS. Better quality, better customer services, etc.

instead of replacing baths that are damaged or don't fit in with the decor, you can always just have it re-enamelled to match the rest of the bathroom. Much quicker, cheaper and easier than a whole new bath.

I don't like to buy books that I haven't already read and know that I like/will want to re-read, so I always try to get them from the library first. Then if I like them enough I look for them used at used bookstores, the library store, and over the internet. I also read a lot of manga, and for some of those series I read fan translations online before the series is available in my country for purchase. To make up for this since the creators don't make any money off it, if I really like a series I will try to buy it new as it comes out in English.

I prefer to buy my books at the bookstore. I will order online, but only if I can't find what I'm looking for. I do not buy ebooks - I can't smell them or carry them to the soccer game or lay in a bubble bath with an electronic device. I guess I'm old fashioned that way.

The description of the bathroom addition is misleading, as it actually says it is a master bathroom addition. This means that the tile, fixtures, trim, and tub and/or shower are nicer than a normal addition of a 3bd/1bh, or a 4bd/2bh. I imagine this addition would be along the 75% recoup' lines. Helpful but not necessarily beneficial.

It's true we are a very spoiled society these days. I remember growing up sitting on the porch drinking tea. Freezing our underwear. It was the small things we appreciated. We really need to switch our way of thinking and learn to optimize our natural resources to stay cool.

  • Ask The Readers: How Do You Buy Books?   14 years 38 weeks ago

I buy all my books used. I live in a college town with one of the biggest book sales in the country. People camp out in front to be among the first to enter on the first day.

If I want to read something newer, I use the library.

It's always better to pay attention to local tastes than to an article by a national organization.

I can guarantee you that if I replaced my antique oak door with beveled glass with a steel door, potential buyers in my historic neighborhood would wonder what I was thinking.

  • Home Improvements That Pay Off   14 years 39 weeks ago

The data is probably based on houses that have more than one bathroom to start with. Most do nowadays.

If I were moving, I wouldn't make expensive home improvements. Since I'm not moving, I do what makes me happy, with only some attention given to making an update something that could be used in many ways rather than just one specific way.

  • Home Improvements That Pay Off   14 years 39 weeks ago

I'm surprised that a bathroom addition wouldn't pay off, given that the price difference between homes with one bathroom and homes with more than one bathroom is significant; just going by what I see for homes listed on Redfin in my area.

For some it's convenience. I'd refill a bottle about 30 times if possible

  • Clean Jeans Right Without Going to the Dry Cleaner   14 years 39 weeks ago

Have you ever put them in the dryer or washed them with hot water? If so there isn't a lot you can do, heat damages the spandex (which is in pretty much all women's jeans) and prevents in from maintaining the jeans' shape when worn. At that point your main option is to do as you said and dampen and dry them.

If you haven't subjected them to too much heat, then you're in luck, the elastic fibers are still on your side. Hand wash or lightly machine wash in cold water inside out and hang them to dry (or lay them flat to dry, sometimes that will allow them to shrink a little more). A pair of jeans without damaged fibers will tighten up slightly through the normal drying process.

The most important aspect of getting jeans to fit and stay that way though, is the shopping process. Wear the jeans in the store while you walk around and look at other things for at least 15 minutes, but preferably half an hour (you may want to let the sales associates know what you're doing) and see how well they retain their shape (always keep in mind that almost all jeans will stretch at least slightly when you pick your size). Ask the sales associates if they or anyone they know owns jeans of this brand and how the jeans react to long wear (chances are if they don't own them themselves they've heard from customers about how they behave). The thickness of the denim and percentage of spandex (no more than 2% usually) are also good indicators of stability, but probably the most telling will be the polyester content. 98% cotton jeans may breathe a little better and satisfy your craving for natural fibers, but they are going to stretch like double jointed yoga teacher. If you want minimal stretching go for at least 20% polyester, preferably higher. I have a pair with 28% polyester and they won't stretch for love nor money; I can wear them for three weeks straight and they fit the same way they did in the fitting room. They are, however, somewhat like wearing a suit of armour and very very hot in the summer, so it's all about balance. To me, the true majesty of my derriere in them is completely worth a little stiffness at first.

I don't understand why people are willing to spend more for the same water that they drink just because of the brand
